Intel/PPC node compatibility

Can one use an intel based system as a node while running Logic on a PPC system? Are there compatibility issues?
Somewhere down the line I'll be needing to step up the power/speed of my setup, and it occured to me that rather than shelling out $2500 for a Mac pro, I could just buy a Mac Mini to run as a node. Seems pretty much ideal, since the Mac Mini is a bare bones system, and I'd only need it for extra muscle. Obviously, a it wouldn't compare to the Mac Pro in speed, but just as a means to take a step up...
Any thoughts?

I run a MacBook Pro,and use an iBook G4 as the node. They work well.
Both have the latest versions LPro 7.2.3 UB,and the newest Node as well.

  • PPC G5 compatibility of Areca PCIE RAID controller arc-1280?

Subject: Mac compatibility of Areca ARC-1280 24 ports PCI Express to SATA II RAID adapter.
At Areca's Internet site ( www.areca.com.tw) consumers can read at pages concerning arc-1280 card that: « The SATA RAID controllers support broad operating systems including ... MAC ... ».
At Specifications page, under: Operating system, it is written: « Mac OS X (no_bootable) ».
Absolutely no other warning appear about MAC owners.
So, if you are just a basic computer consumer, you are now strongly tempted to believe that if you got a MAC with PCIExpress technology & OS X, you can safely buy arc 1280 PCIE.
This is because (nearly) everyone knows that in real pragmatic actual life OS X exclusively runs on Apple Mac machines. In the case of arc-1280, as it is a PCIExpress adapter, only two Apple Mac models are possible: the very recent MACPro (Intel cpu based) & late 2005 PPC G5 dualcore (IBM cpu based). As Areca mentions nowhere any warning between MACPro & G5 dualcore, only owners of either of those PCIE machines may logically have the opportunity to run OS X with an arc-1280 connected!
If you are a little bit more paranoïd, before to buy such an expensive adapter, you will check if there are other stuffs to confirm your deductions. You then will find Areca's online user's manual 3.2, where it is stated that a bios configuration utility, contained into card's firmware, is « OS independant » & can be accessed at startup by pressing TAB or F6. About « MAC X » driver installation, user is invited to follow a readme.txt (that in fact does not exist nowhere). It is the same for archttp proxy server installation, which is also asserted to support Mac OS.
Moreover, a Mac driver is freely downloadable online, called arcmsr-1.3.1.pkg. Now you are ready to trust!
Having arc-1280 plugged, you start your Mac (happy to hear that card beep after startup) then install driver (the same is present online & on Areca's companion CD). A text appear:
« This driver supports...arc 1280...PCIE... Please note that this is a pre-release version of the driver for testing purpose, and is *NOT * for general distribution. ». But installation completes succesfully and you pay no attention to this frightening sentence hidden into Areca's driver package.
What then arise when you have your computer restarted? Nothing: except the beep at startup, Areca's high end Raid controller simply do not appear anywhere into Mac OS X!
As I cannot afford paying more than 1200 euro for just a startup beep, I decided to require help from distributor & Areca's very enigmatic support. Lastly distributor decided to try with another arc-1280 which was as useless on my Mac than the first one. I again protested, Areca's support seeming to have totally resign for quite a lot of time now, distributor blaming me not to have been carefull enough ?!
Distributor ask me now to re-send back the card. They will try to get their money back from Areca, then maybe will I have my money back ? They asked me to write a letter with a description of the problem & why I want a full refund.
This is now done, hoping this will help to avoid further misinformation.

    MacGurus PCIE which are supported.
I saw the Areca reviewed xbitlabs
AMUG http://www.amug.com does great reviews of Mac compatible drives, enclosures, and controllers.

  • Intel Motherboard DG965WH compatibility

Hi, I want to build a system to run Solaris. The Motherboard I want to use is an Intel DG965WH with the Intel G965 Chipset.
I want to use 6 SATA Drives and 1 IDE drive. I don't care about sound and 3D, but I want the graphical user interface to work as well as the USB ports. This motherboard uses an Intel GMA X3000 on-board graphics subsystem.
Will Solaris work on this motherboard.
Thank you very much in advance for your reply.

  • Partition Question:  Can I Make One HD Intel & PPC Bootable?

    Hello,
I bought an OWC FireWire external drive to use as a bootable repair drive. My plan was to partition it in half and then make the first partition bootable on an Intel and then make the second partition bootable on PPC Macs.
So, when I try to do this (via Disk Utility), I discover that I can't choose a partition scheme for each individual partition. Instead I have to choose one scheme for both partitions. GUID apparently boots Intel Macs and Apple Partition Map boots PPC Macs. Is there a way to do what I want to do, and if so, then how? Many thanks!

Some confusion here. "I kept all of the drives as one partition" doesn't make any sense. You have partitions on a drive - not the other way round.
    •  Each partition of a drive is a separate volume with its own icon on the desktop.
    •  Every drive has partitions, even if only one! Another way of saying that is to say that no partitions means one partition.
In Disk Utility if you select the drive, and not an indented volume beneath it, you will see the 'Partition' tab appear and in that tab you will see the "Options…" button which gives you the choice of partition scheme. That applies whether the drive has one partition (aka "no partitions"!) or multiple partitions.
    =-=-=-=-
Your drives do not need to be re-zeroed. What you should do with all drives is occasionally (interpret that according to degree of carefulness /anxiety /paranoia)) run a 'surface scan' to check that no additional bad blocks have appeared, which is a warning to immediately get rid of that drive.

  • Simultaneous Logins; Not Working; Intel & PPC

So, one of my schools is a mixed 10.4 environment with PPC and Intel iMacs. Everything, including the G4 server is sitting at 10.4.7.
I do not have mobile accounts and I don't have fast user switching turned on. And of course, "Simultaneous Logins" is turned off for every account.
My APF clients can go to a PPC machine and login once and then go to an Intel machine and login. They get a slightly different Dock & Safari doesn't play real nice but they're able to login. The same can be said for an AFP client logging into an Intel first and then going to a PPC machine.
Now, they cannot log in on two PPCs or two Intels at any time and so in that respect, the disabling of simultaneous logins is working. However, I've got a lot of people who will be lazy about logging out as they migrate from computer to computer and it's best if this "feature" actually worked cross-processor...
    Any suggestions? Anyone? ;0)

Figured it out, I just had to restart the server for the changes to take effect.

  • MSI GX660R with intel motherboard and compatibility with Samsung 840 EVO SSD

    Hi
Im am new to this forum, so I apologize in advance if this post is in the wrong section.
I am considering to replace the hard drive in my MSI GX660R with a Samsung 840 EVO 250 gb ssd, since it has the best benchmark ratings and are very afordable. My laptop has an Intel motherboard with an i7 core processor.
My question in relation to the upgrade is, whether the laptop is compatible with that excact ssd. I plan to run it in AHCI mode, since I have bad expirience with loss of data under RAID. If i chose to run the extra HDD as a secondary drive, it will therefore still be under AHCI.
Can anyone refer me to some sort of compatibility list, or tell me if the above mentioned drive is compatible? I havent been able to find out myself, and MSI is farily difficult to get in contact with.
    Any help is appreciated.

Yes, your early 2013 Retina model uses 6.0 Gbps SATA but it's not a standard mSATA connection. You could upgrade using Transcend's JetFlash -> http://www.transcend-info.com/apple/jetdrive/ - to space up to 960GB, however.

  • MBP intel -- ppc compatible?

My mbp is a year old, with the magsafe connexion. Can I take the battery out of this machine (10.4.11) and stick it in a mbp ppc (10.4.9) 1.75 yrs old and charge it? I left the magsafe cord at home for the holidays and my sister has a mbp ppc and I want to charge up in that.

*"Can I take the battery out of this machine (10.4.11) and stick it in a mbp ppc (10.4.9) 1.75 yrs old and charge"*
There is no such thing as an "mpb ppc." Powerbooks were PowerPC based. All MacBook and MacBook Pro's are Intel based. They use different batteries and power adapters.
So unless your sister definitely has a MacBook Pro, and not a PowerBook, you're out of luck.

  • MOBO Z87-GD-65 - Intel I7 BIOS Compatability

    Morning
I am posting in regards to my first PC build which is not going quite as smoothly as hoped / promised.
    I have bought a MSI Z87-GD65
(Details from under PCI Slot MS-7845 VER:1.1)
I did buy this board second hand and is apparently just over 12 months old.
(Hoping this is a common issue and I have not just bought a lemon) .
My query is in regards to CPU compatibility (Intel I7-4790) and updating the bios as cannot get the computer to post.
The fans spin, the board light illuminate but the computer will not post.
I have bread boarded the board with only the CPU installed with no results. Having a search on the net I have found posts on how some users have replaced CPU’s with newer chips only to have the same problem as I a having.
Seeing as I cannot get into the BIOS it is not possible for me to update.
Anyone aware of this issue? If so is there a resolution.
I would be truly grateful of any advice. I have bought the components for my system built around this board, but if had to buy a replacement board a new board of this standard would be out of my budget.
    Thanks in Advance
    Ian Dubs

    Thanks for your response.
Gets more and more interesting, purpose of building a computer, to learn more about computers, certainly doing that just not in a way that I had hoped.
Cant even get the board to post without RAM, would have expected a very panicky beeping from the mother board.
However your thoughts on the BIOS and the chip sound fair, when I bought the chip the guy at the shop said I would have to update the BIOS but didn't imagine it to be such a pain. the POST numbers on the board I initially thought were '00'. Have since found there is no such thing and its probably 'D0" (error initializing CPU).
Not sure where to get an older chip from, short of buying one. Buying a chip for a potentially junk board would ad insult to injury.
Have contacted MSI Australia with a very toadying email regarding them updating the BIOS (if that is the problem).
    Cheers

  • Intel vs PowerMAC compatability

I currently have a Power MAC G5 (no Intel inside) and am looking to buy a MacBookPro to take work on the road. Will I be able to share FCP files back and forth between these computers without any issues?

As long as you are running the exact same versions of Studio, including updates. Be off by such as a simple update and you're going to have to go the xml route.

  • HDV on a non-intel PPC imac?

I have an HDV camcorder I've borrowed from someone to film a wedding. I figured since it recorded to miniDV, I'd be fine, since I have FCP5. Also, I've got Toast 9 with BluRay/HD support and iMovie 08. Since my iMac is not Intel, I'm having problems capturing from the camcorder. I've heard of Voltaire (or some name similar to that), but I've heard mixed reviews, plus it costs $40. Are there any workarounds for my current set-up so I wouldn't have to buy any new software? If not, what software would you recommend?

Look in your FCP Help menu bar item. You will find a guide there entitled "HD and Broadcast Formats".
The procedures for capturing, working and editing with HDV are covered in detail.
Interestingly enough, the illustration showing how to connect and set up a HDV camera shows a G5 iMac.

  • S230u Thinkpad Twist Intel Wireless Card Compatability?

Is there an official list as to what Wireless Cards will work with the Lenovo Twist.  I know when they were sold you had two options of cards, and had to decide if you wanted the Intel which supported Miricast or the Broadcom version which supported 5Ghz. Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 BGN & BT 4)Thinkpad a/b/g/n Wireless & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 ABGN & BT 4.0) Now there are Intel Cards out that support all of the above such as the Advanced-N 6235, but I can find no information if this or any other Intel cards will work with the Thinkpad Twist.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

There was an interesting post on Amazon about wireless cards for the Twist.  I'm going to try to upgrade from my Broadcom to an "Intel WiFi part 2230BNHMW chip with "FRU P/N 04W3765" written right on the face of the card" on my 3-year-old Twist, based on the poster's info: "Some Twists come with WiDi support and some don't. Mine didn't. It had the newest dual band (2.4 and 5 g) WiFi card that doesn't support WiDi because it isn't made by Intel. Lenovo did this all to save a couple of bucks. So I brought a WiFi card that did support WiDi and Lenovo had whitelisted the card and I had to return it to get a single band, "Lenovo certified", Intel chip. It would have been nice if Lenovo stated that it didn't have the correct WiFi card for WiDi. You will need the Intel WiFi part 2230BNHMW chip with "FRU P/N 04W3765" written right on the face of the card - the 04W3765 is the Lenovo part number. This is the only chip that will get past Lenovo whitelisting that will make WiDi work. Using the new Intel Wifi card had no impact the Twist's WiFi performance at my house. When I installed the WiFi chip, I didn't have to update any drivers. The computer automatically did it upon booting. The chip was very easy to install and if you go to the Lenovo Twist support website the manual shows you exactly how to do it. However, I did have to update the Audio driver using the Lenovo driver website. This is important because I updated all of the drivers using the Lenovo website when I got the computer. However, the Lenovo website failed to update the audio drivers. So when I first used the WiDi I had no sound. It was very easy to update but you will likely need to update the audio drivers separately should you do what I did. Once I installed the WiDi software for Windows 8 (from the Lenovo Website) and added the Neatgear Push2TV 3000 to my TV, it worked like a charm (I also updated the software on the Push2TV 3000 - PTV3000 that I purchased from Amazon. However, I don't think that this was critical)."

  • Difference between Applescript for Intel & PPC?

Well little did I know I'd want to write an Applescript for PowerPC again, but after updating to Lion, I forgot to keep a copy of Applescript Editor hanging around on my 10.4.11 partition.     I noticed the Applescripts I wrote for 10.6.8 and earlier wouldn't work in Lion, and I had to recompile them with the Script Editor in Lion. Now I have a new Applescript I wish to write for Snow Leopard and earlier, but can't since I don't have my old Snow Leopard or earlier Script Editor.
    1. Is there a place I can download the Applescript Editor itself for 10.4.11
    2. Do I have to extract the program from my 10.4 installer discs for my iMac 5,1 with Pacifist?
    3. Could I do something with Textwrangler to edit my script so it is an application that runs on Rosetta and PowerPC?
    Thank you.

The compiled scripts should not differ, just the single-file application format - script applications are now saved as applicaion bundles like everything else.

  • Project compatibility: Leopard vs. Tiger, PowerPC vs. Intel

Gotta question... We are about to upgrade our older edit bay to a new mac pro, but it is VERY IMPORTANT to us to continue to share project files. The newer one is a G5 with OS 10.4.11, and obviously the new one will be a Mac Pro with 10.5.
Is there any published information on whether FCP 6.0.2 and Motion 3.0.2 projects are fully compatible across Leopard/Tiger machines and across Intel/PPC machines? I could not find any searching Apple's website.
I'm guessing some of you with rotating upgrade schedules have already faced this question!

Its not the OS version or PowerPC/Intel architecture that matters. Its the version of Final Cut Pro that matters. If both computers are using Final Cut 6.02 for example, then the project files will be exchangeable. On the other hand, if one machine has FCP 5.x and the other has 6.x, then the newer version will open the older version file, but once you save it with the newer version, you can't go back to the older version.
There are also some differences within major versions. Sometimes one 5.x release is not compatible with a 5.y release. I can't recall where the breaks were made. But it doesn't matter if you have the same point release on both machines.
If you mix Intel/PowerPC, then you'll at least need both machines to have FCP 5.1 or later since earlier versions aren't compatible with Intel processors.

Not sure if it's a related issue, but I was able to make an image of an Intel machine a couple of days ago... haven't applied any updates since. The obvious difference for me is that what I'm trying here is a G5.
/Volumes/Storage/Library/NetBoot/NetBootSP2/Image_4708220938.nbi/NIUReservedSyst em.z.dmg which the first error claimed did not exist, does. Anybody else have any luck using this modification?
I can't believe they'd put an arbitrary limit of 50GB on creating an image. I can find no mention of any such limit in the System Image and SW Update pdf. Well, one for tech support I guess.

  • Images resized from Intel to PPC Using Motion 3

Hey guys, I'm having a reoccurring issue. I work on an animation using still images doing basic ken burns animations with some masks. However when I open the same exact project on my Dual G5 Power Mac which has the same version of Motion. the images get re sized and the mask's are displaced. I originally create the animation on an intel Power Mac. I know it's something with the intel-PPC thing because when I open the same project on my intel Mb Pro it looks the same as the Intel Power Mac. I have all the preferences set to default except turning off the setting to automatically re-size large images in the preferences. Any thoughts?
