Intel PRO/10+ netwrok card and Solaris 8_x86

Hi! I have a working Solaris 7_x86. Now I want to try Solaris 8_x86 10/00 with the same hardware. Installation is fine, except it didn't detect Intel PRO/10+ ISA network card automatically. In the first installation, I just ignored it and go on with the installation. The installation is completed and running successfully, but without network connection. I tried to redetect it by configuration assistance program. Again, it didn't detect it. I also checked the hardware compatibilty list on SUN site, it stated only Intel PCI 10+ is supported. Is that true? If it's not, how can I make my Intel PRO/10+ ISA card work?
Thanks,
Ricky

Maybe the 3Com card works by adding it's PCI-ID to /etc/driver_aliases:

Maybe you also need the (unoffical) elxl driver update for some of the
newer 3Com 3c905 variants:

• 3com 3c90x fast ethernet 10/100 card and solaris 8 (x86)

I am completely new to solaris, I am trying to install solaris 8 for x86 in a computer with a 3com 3c90x fast ethernet 10/100 card and looks like the o.s. does not recognize it at first. Reading the 02/02 hardware compatibility list I found out that this device needs to be configured after the instalation (with the device configuration floppy). The point is... I have no clue on how to do this. Can someone help me with that or point me in the right direction? The machine is ment to be a back-up file server.
Since now, thanks for the attention.

• Solaris 8 Hangs on Warm Reboot w/2 IBM-Branded Intel Pro 100B Cards

Hello,

I have a kind of a weird problem with an installation of Solaris 8 Intel that I've been playing around with. The system is an old IBM PC 350 with an Evergreen P-200 upgrade chip (it was originally a P-133), 96MB of RAM, and two IBM-branded Intel Pro 100B Ethernet cards. All-in-all it's working ok, but whenever I do a warm reboot (i.e. anything but a full shutdown and power cycle), it hangs almost immediately after it starts to boot the kernel. It gets past the device configuration wizard, and the "select (b) or (i)" part, but hangs right after it clears the screen. If I power it off and back on, it boots normally. I haven't experienced any other issues with the system.

I know people that have the exact same setup (down to the Evergreen upgrade chip) except for the two Ethernet cards, and they don't have this problem.

Has anyone seen behavior like this before? Do you know of any way to rectify it? Any assistance would be appreciated. I can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] Thanks!

Thanks for your quick reply I would definitely suspect hardware (especially as my PC isn't in the prime of its youth), however a MemTest86+ test and a HDAT2 and a Hitachi Drive Fitness Test throw up no errors what so ever (No bad segments, no warnings or anything).
This is just a theory of mine but my pc doesn't seem to hang with SystemRescueCD or Parted Magic (both Linux based), so maybe its just Arch specific, although I will need to do more testing on that front
Thanks

• T41 Intel Pro/Wireless 2100

IPCONFIG reports that our T41 machine's wireless adapters are disconnected. Yet, the Intel Pro/wireless 2100 detects networks but fails to communicate and receive IP addresses. Intel reports no longer supporting the cards or providing driver updates, which implicates either a WINXP update or an update to our wireless network. Are there any Intel Pro/wireless 2100 drivers and/or WINXP communiations updates/patches that will permit the T41 to communicate and receive an IP address from the newer faster networks?
Solved!

Welcome to the forum!
I would strongly suggest upgrading to a newer card, such as Intel 2200BG, Intel 2915ABG or IBM/Atheros b/g or a/b/g

• Mac PRo with raid card shipped with drive not suitable for raid?

Hi all,
I ordered a Mac Pro with raid card and a 1TB hard drive. The drive which came in the computer was WDC WD1001FALS which is not a hard drive rated for raid usage. On Western Digital's site they suggest using WD1002FBYS.
Is the model WD1001FALS the correct drive which Apple ships although one ordered the raid card?

The WD 640GB Blue, and WD 1TB Black are the only drive options for the mac pro; that's what you choose.
The RE3 (or FBYS) is not an option sold through apple. Buying the raid card, is not going to change the drive.
On whether to use the RE3 over the Blacks, it depends on how you will be using it. From what I've heard, the Blacks are enterprise drives themselves; basically with just a less robust firmware (no TLER). If you will have the drives on 24/7 in a raid 5, then yes, RE3 will probably be better. If not, I think the black will suffice; note the blacks are GREAT drives by themselves anyway.
The apple raid card can connect to both SATA and SAS drives internally, however most times people buying the raid card want to use it for SAS drives. There are a lot more cheaper and possibly a lot more stable options then apple's raid card if you are looking to use SATA drives.
Check amug:
http://www.amug.org/
A common problem with the apple raid card is the battery:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA849Z/B?mco=NDc1ODczNw
Lastly about enterprise drives, truthfully I don't see the difference really. I have enterprise drives in a 8-drive raid5 config running 24/7 as a server. 2 drives died on me after about 4 months. To top it off, they died within 10 min of each other, crushing the raid to pieces. Granted they were Seagate ES.2's, it's understandable
The boot drive of the server is a stock desktop WD drive and running 24/7. It's been running for almost 4 years straight.

• ATTO Pro UL366 card and Intel Xserve

I've got a new Apple Intel Xserve on order and am wondering if the ATTO Pro UL366 adapter card that's in our old G4 Xserve will work? ATTO's support wants me to buy a UL5 card but that seems like a spendy alternative.
Our G4 Xserve is connected to a 1U 1x10 Packetloader library from Exabyte (Tandberg).
Also, if I did upgrade to a faster card would our backup times decrease?
Thanks.

There are two things to be aware of here.
One is that you need to have ordered your server with the PCI-X riser card (by default it comes with PCIe slots and there's no chance of using your UL366 in a PCIe slot).
Then the other thing is whether the card will work in a PCI-X slot.
The original PCI spec allowed for cards based on both 3.3V and 5V power requirements.
PCI-X retains compatibility with 3.3V cards but not with 5V cards. So if the UL366 is a 5V card then it won't work (I couldn't find an easy answer to that one).
Also, if I did upgrade to a faster card would our backup times decrease?
Possibly, but that's hard to say. The whole reason PCI-X was developed was because too many devices (especially gigabit ethernet cards and SCSI cards) exceeded the bandwidth of the PCI spec. Therefore it's entirely possible that you're being throttled by the (relatively) slow throughput of the PCI bus.
That said, there are many variables when it comes to backup speed, not least of which is the source of your data (how fast are your disks?) and the speed of your backup tape (the Packetloader isn't the fastest tape technology out there - it's only rated at 12MB/sec). If your tape drive speed is less than the PCI card then changing cards isn't going to make much difference.

• Solaris 10 x86 (6/06) doesn't recognize Intel PRO 1000 PCI Express Gigabit

Hi dear all!
Have problem with onboard Intel Dual port ( Intel 82563EB ) Gigabit Controller on supermicro 5000P(Blackford) chipset's board

In what way can I make work these onboard network cards under Solaris 10?
Thanks all in advance who responds.

HI Sam,
No at this time, i haven't issue for this problème.
But, i try intel card soon with a mac pro.

• Network card: e1000g (Intel PRO/1000 MT) did not working properly

Hi to everyone!
I'm having some strange trouble.
All computers attached to one DLink gigabit switch
Server #1:
nf4-based motherboard, Intel PRO/1000 MT net card, onboard net card (forcedeth driver used) Ubuntu Linux 2.6.25 kernel version.
All just working.
Server #2:
nf6-based motherboard, same Intel net card, SunOS 5.11 snv_86.
All just working.
Server #3:
Same as server's #1 nf4-based motherboard. Same onboard card. Same SunOS 5.11 snv_86 as server #2 have installed.
Its work. BUT..
Intel card is not working as expected.
It is seen by system. It is properly up and running. It is sending packent and receiving packets. Ierrs=Oerrs=Collis=Queue=0.
But thru e1000g0 interface no one computer can reach this one, and from server #3 no one computer is seen thru e1000g0. Exept...
Except two old Sunray1 devices (attached to the same switch for testing purposes)! But even these devices seen only by arp requests, and is not pingable.
It is some mistery, but if I turn on jubmo frames, these rays got a picture from SRSS, testing on this sevrer! Not for long, heh, they hung up fast, but this is proof a physical connection :)
So, I can not disable onboard network card on Server #3 - server becoming unreachable :(
I know, those network cards must work on Solaris - as they did it on server #2. I know, those network cards work with my nf4-based motherboards - as they did it on server #1.
But I can't uderstand, whait is going on with e1000g driver on server #3!
P.S. Kernel driver e1000g settings are the same. All difference from servers #2 and #3 is: #2 had Intel netcard installed then Solaris was setting up, and #3 had Intel netcard installed later. All netcards are working (I trying to swap them from one computer to another - did not change anything).

*) #3 thinks it is sending, but a NIC/driver error prevents it.NIC is fully health. It is tested on another PC. Driver error - or driver's bad implementation - is the one I'm thinking.
*) #3 has a bad transmit pair of wires (would affect all communication)This patchcord works w/o problems on other PCs and even on onboard NIC of server #3.
*) Network problemsHeh :)
*) Firewall or other device is dropping the ARP repliesIt is some very stealthy and very selective firewall, affecting only external NICs :)
BTW, then cord is attached to NIC, it sends "who has this IP" requests, asking to be shure there will not be an IP conflict. No one seen this requests.
*) #1 has a NIC/driver error preventing it from seeing the reply.Only for send from #3? It is like a firewall on #3 :) And, there is more PCs, not only #1-#3. No one can see #3's replays (or asks), not only #1..
I'm repeating: this PC works in network now on onboard NIC w/o problems. But onboard NIC is only 100 Mb/s, and we need 1 Gb/s.
I was thinking, Solaris took wrong MAC for NICs - but not, ifconfig shows the same MACs as marked on NICs.
Even more, yesterday i plumbed e1000g1 - second Intel NIC in server #3. And I was surprised - it worked perfectly!
But I make "touch /reconfigure; init 6" - and after reboot, no one of two Intel NICs working again :( They both have the same behavior - no one can see packets they sends.)
I even try to restrict connection on 100 Mb/s by driver's .conf modify - it works, link become yellow instead of green (take a note, NIC is able to "speak" properly with switch!), but all other stay the same.
Strange, really strange behavior. More strange is a fact this NICs work on another instance of same SunOS, but on different motherboard, while the same MB with same NIC is working w/o problems under Ubuntu. Looks like some bug in Solaris driver.

• How to install driver for Intel Pro 1000 PCI Network-card

Hello,
I just bought the a.m. Intel Pro 1000 Network adapter, but I don't know at all how to install the driver for Solaris 10.
The installation instructions delivered from Intel didn't help me at all, because I can't uncompress the INTCGigae.pkg and the INTCGigaE.tar.z files.
I copied them to /tmp and folllowed Intel's Installlation Instructions.
Please keep in mind I am new to Solaris 10, with no Linux/Unix experience, when helping me.
Thanks in advance for help and assistance.

Hi!
And what happens if you install the driver from the Toshiba WLAN portal:
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/wlan
I still dont know what you mean with Askey for Toshiba
You should try to install the driver manually. Choose in device manager the WLAN card, right click and select Update Driver. Choose the advanced installation where you can choose the driver directory yourself and navigate to the folder where you have stored the downloaded driver.

• 2009 Mac Pro upgrading graphics card to GTX 680 mac. What is the best version of AE and PP and OSX to have?

Hello,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4.1
Mac OSX version 10.6.8
Processor - 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory - 24GB
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon HD 4870
I use After Effects and Premiere Pro daily for my work. I am not too technically minded. I want to update and improve my machine as much as possible and am thinking of buying an SSD drive to replace my current start up disk. I also am thinking about getting the GTX 680 mac version graphics card. I have read many online discussions regarding OpenCL and CUDA, many discussions with mixed feelings about the improvements the 680 gives an older Mac Pro - some people say it is amazing others say the improvements seem minimal or worse.
What I want to know is if I purchase the SSD and 680 graphics card what is the optimal OSX - 10.8 or 10.9? and what is the optimal versions of AE and PP to have - CS6 or CC? Also what settings and what additional drivers would I need to consider?
I contacted an independent authorised mac reseller and he thought it was a bad idea to put a new graphics card and get the latest OSX in an old machine and tried to sell me a used 2010 Mac Pro, but I think it would be more cost effective to get the SSD and 680 instead, it's just I read the occasional horror story on a forum and I worry about making the wrong choice, I rely on my Mac Pro to make a living!
Thanks in advance

Thank you for the valuable information Eric, I think I will go with the 680 but I understand that it wont be fully utilised on my old Mac Pro.
Perhaps I will replace my startup/applications hard drive with a 480GB SSD. My other 3 bays are full with 3 x 2TB Hard drives that have media on them so I have no spare room for a dedicated SSD drive for AE cache. But could I put a 250GB SSD into one of the PCI-E slots using something like - SSD SuperSpeed Upgrade Kit for Apple Mac Pro 2008 2009 2010 2012 | eBay
Would this be my best solution? Is it a relatively simple installation, does anyone have any experience of a similar setup?
cc_merchant, thank you for the reply, I am aware you have to pay monthly payments for CC, that is no problem.

Hi there,

• Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD and Soundtrack Pro 1.0.2 and new Intel iMac

I have the both FCP and Soundtrack Pro versions listed above. I'm thinking about picking up a new Intel iMac. Will I have to pay $199 or $99 to upgrade to FCP Studio. I just purchased Soundtrack Pro recently, if I could upgrade for just $99 and get Shake and iDVD that would be a deal...probably still a deal for $199.
I also use CS2, seems Adobe is a little confusing to me. Will I have to pay to get CS2 native for the Intel iMac? Any idea on cost and timeliness.
Separately, how will FCP run on a 20" Intel iMac once upgraded to Universal version, which I'll have to do, since it won't run under Rosetta? I currently only do Mini DV but should I plan on getting the extra video memory now, planning on eventually going into the HD video realm?
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments...thinking about getting the Intel iMac via CompUSA with their interest free deals tomorrow.

Powebook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) Happy with Mac...don't want to lose the ease!

well, same situation here, I was about to order a Macbook Pro but then decided to saty with our beloved G platform. the reason is that it will take some time for our Pro Apps to become fully /natively compatible with Intel and I just can't wait that much.
as for your question about using an iMac with FCP, the answer would be a;
"Yes" if you're going to work with DV only footage (using an external HD for your captured media is a must). and a
"No" if you plan to work with HD material in the future. there you've got no choice but a PowerMac G5 with a fast Graphic Card and a special SD/HD card or box to capture the footage.
résumé: if you're a serious FCP user, go for something expandible, go for a Powermac.

• Upgrading graphics card and ram on late 2011 macbook pro?

Hi. I have a late 2011 macbook pro, and I wanted to know if i could upgrade my graphics card and ram for better performance while gaming. I play WoW and diablo 3 and often notice lag and can only run on low settings. So my graphics are Intel HD 3000 which is integrated, and i was wondering if i could upgrade to a graphics card like AMD or nvidia. Also, would upgrading from 4 gb of ram to 8gb of ram help my performance? Thanks.

You cannot upgrade the graphics card on your MBP. It is soldered to the logic board.
RAM can be increased to 8 or 16 GB. The correct specifications are; 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
The best vendors for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
