Intel question, desktop advice

Hi all and thanks in adance for any tips.
I'm in the market for a new desktop - just the tower. My priorities are value, speed, dependability and durability. Use will be mostly business related - MS Office, lots of tabs open during browsing, blogging, social media, etc. That obviously involves some multimedia work, although thus far we have yet to work with video. We will store our iTunes library on the desktop, and run a cable to our stereo. But, for the most part, this is a business machine and certainly not an entertainment unit. We're not gamers. Looks and size are unimportant. It'll be tucked away in a desk.
I've most been looking at i3 and i5 processors and was suprised to see how affordable this Gateway - Desktop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive was at $599.
Then I noticed that some of the I3's, like this Lenovo - Ideacentre Desktop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive (at $529) and this Gateway - Desktop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 6GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive(at $479) actually run at faster at 3.1GHz versus 2.8 GHz for the i5.
Which machine will run faster, the i5 with the lower GHz or the i3s? Which one represents the best value - the most bang for the buck? Are there other machines I should be looking at given my needs? Am  I correct in thinking that all of these machines will meet our needs and offer a fair amount of computing power for the money?
Thanks! Greg

Thanks so much for the answer. Yeah, it doesn't say specifically what processor it is, simply -
2.8GHz (3.1GHz with Turbo Burst). But I take it from your answer then that this is definitely a quad-core processor, and that, therefore, for appications that split well across the cores (like video editing) that it will be faster than higher GHz daul-core i3s. Do I have that right?
Yes, this is correct.  And thanks to the Turbo Boost (which cranks up the clock speed for one core when the others are idle), even for single-core workloads it should at least match the i3.
Turbo Boost negates one of the traditional disadvantages of quad-cores, which was typically lower clock rates than dual-core CPUs.
But since at least one i5 is not a quad-core, confirm before purchase that it is.  Sometimes the box in-store has more detail than BBY.com, or the manufacturer website would have more detail.

Since I upgraded to OS 10.6.8 from 10.5.x my 2x3GHz quad-core Intel Xeon desktop spontaneously turns off as if I pulled the plug. Mostly it happens when there is no open software and it's in the sleep mode (because it spends more time like that), but it has happened while I'm working. It just suddenly quits.

This is a suspicious sign of power supply failure. I would have that checked into. Others who have had similar problems have had the power supplies replaced which fixed the issue.

  • I can't get calendar or e-mail data to synch from my Power Mac to iMac (intel version) desktop computer consistently--any  advice?

I can not consistently synch calendar and e-mail data from my Power Mac laptop computer to my iMac desktop computer (intel version) via MobileMe-- any advice for  me?

  • IMacs intel question

    Hi everybody,
I am new to Macintosh and I am just about to buy an INTEL iMac, but how can I differentiate between the "old" iMac with the Core Duo processor and the very "new" one with the Core2 Duo processor ?
I am asking this Q. because my sister is buying it for me and bringing it to Mexico and she is completely computer iliterate.
So maybe a text or a logo printed outside on the box containing the computer or does she have to unpack it and look for this info printed on the computer itself?
Sorry for the dumb question, but I would like to make sure that she is not buying the "old" model.
Thanks a lot for any advice.

It will say on the box that it has an Intel Core 2 Duo. Maybe you could just explain to her the difference, and make sure she gets the one with Core 2 Duo written on it? Another thing that might be helpful to know is that the 17" model didn't come in 2.0 GHz before, it was 1.83 GHz. So if she gets a 17" iMac that says 2.0 GHz on the specifications, it's definitely a new one.

  • How do I use a Verizon PC Wireless card with my iMAC Intel Core desktop?

Help! Bought a Kyocera KPC650 Wireless PC Card for Verizon wireless internet. Works fine w/ laptop because it has a slot. How do I configure my iMAC desktop to accept this card? Is there an external USB adapter? Or do I have to get one installed internally? Which adapter works with OX 10.4?
I've seen the Quatech U132 online. Will that work? Its $192!! As is the Sewell adapter too. ($209)
Any ideas? I want to get off SBCYahoo DSL and their router because our DSL line is damaged in our complex and no one is fixing it!
    Thanks in advance.

What protocol is Verizon using that is not compatible with the Airport Extreme built into your iMac? I have used Apple's Airport Extreme with a lot of different wireless routers with zero problems as all conform to either 802.11b or 802.11g standard both of which are supported by the built in Airport Extreme.

  • Intel video + desktop effects used to work... now it doesn't.

I'm using kde-mod and I'm not sure what happened, but in the last week or two, desktop effects (compositing) has stopped working, and when I drag windows around, there are artifacts and such now.  It didn't used to be this way and worked quite well before.  I'm using the intel video driver... the card is a fairly recent gmasomethingorother.  I really have no idea what to do next.

Ok I finally figured it out, well sort of. The issue was that the Netgear was screwing up the DHCP. I new it had to be the the Netgear because the setup worked fine at a friends with a Linksys. The strange thing was that iTunes could see other libraries but not connect even though a ping could not. So I turned off the DHCP server and assigned manual IP's to all the clients. Didn't work, I could see the other clients and share files but the internet was lost. Weird. Next I turned DHCP back on and reset the entire network back to my original configuration. Works like a charm. I don't really know what the issue is and the solution doesn't stick, but it can be replicated without fail. Thanks to everyone.

  • Question on advice on timing of when to submit hands on submission form

In [http://www.oracle.com/education/certification] support-faq's the question (accessed as of time of this post)
    Q. Do I need to complete all the tests in my certification path within a set period of time or in a specific order?+Has the follwing answer:
Requirements for Oracle Certifications do not need to be completed in a specific order.
It is recommended that a candidate complete the training prior to sitting for an exam, but it is not required.
*The Course Submission Form should be completed after all other requirements have been met.*I cant recall if the FAQ has changed, but IMHO previous best practice was to submit Hands on course form immediately after qualifying hands on course was taken to minimize delay in time obtain success kit. Is the advice or requirement now different?

On a slightly more serious note - are there any plans to simply load Oracle University class rosters into the HOC system? If 'Oracle Certification ID'* is optionally allowed at eAttendance time, that should be a moderately simple integration, and would eliminate the HOC submission requirement for a large % of the candidates. Allowing 'you' to concentrate on 'alternate experience and verification thereof' mechanisms.

  • Question - Need Advice Regarding Second Hard Drive On HP Pavilion dv7t-4100 Notebook PC

    Hi,
I currently have a HP Pavilion dv7t-4100 Notebook PC, and my hard drive failed (luckily while still under warranty!).  So I contacted HP support and they are in the process of sending me a replacement hard drive, so that I may install it.  When I opened the back of the notebook, I realized that a second hard drive could be installed, if desired.  I would be interested in doing this!  My current primary drive was (and will be again) a Toshiba 1 TB Internal hard drive Serial ATA-300 2.5" 5400 rpm, model MK1059GSM.  I understand (from reading a previous post) that for the second hard drive, I will need to purchase  a "2nd HDD Caddy & Cable for HP dv7-4000, dv7-5000, dv7t SE" (the purchase link the tech in the other post referred to was http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=345); and now I need to decide on the size (and other stats) of the hard drive that I will buy to install and used as the secondary drive.  The HP customer service rep I spoke with on the phone about my primary drive replacement said that it is usually recommended to not go any higher (in capacity) than the primary drive, for the second drive, to ensure a more "stable" system (but I am not sure about the level of"technical" knowledge he has about the inner workings of the notebooks).  However, from my upgrading experiences with desktop PCs, I was usually able to go as high in capacity as I could/desired; as long as the physical size of the drive was the same, and it was compatible with my system.  And I usually did choose to go with a larger capacity second drive, as this was where most of my data and media files were stored (with the primary being used for mostly operating system and system files).  This is my first time "upgrading" a Notebook, so I wanted to check with the techs here on the board- would it be a problem for me to go with a secondary drive larger than my primary drive's 1TB capacity?  Also, are there any other factors to consider and keep in mind when selecting a second hard drive?  Any advice and replies will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much for your help with this!  -Brian

You should be able to go as high as 2TB.
I also own a,(Older), DV7 notebook which has dual drive capability.
I bought my caddy from the place recommended and got everything needed including screws !
I matched the capacity in mine with an exact same hard drive and have never had a problem.
Minor battery life noticable but that was it.
Your system BIOS is what will hold you back from say a 3TB drive.
You can go to HP site and check the specs on your model and find out for 100 % sure.

I would recommend doing what I did and match the drive exactly.
    Good day !

  • Mac Pro Quad core Intel Xeon upgrade advice please!

Hi all, i have a Mac Pro Quad core 2 x 2.8ghz Intel Xeon (2008 model) with 4gb RAM.
I am planning on giving it some upgrades and a fresh OS install as it is slowly grinding to a halt (particualrly noisey hard drives)
Can anyone recommend best/fastest/silent! S-ATA hard drive to upgrade to?
Can anyone recommend a good replacement ATAPI DL DVD-RW Drive as mine is also on its way out.
Ram upgrade. Lots of space for RAM so what would you all recommend?
Ultimately i am finding myself working with alot of large PS file and so would welcome any suggestions to improve/soup-up the processor/performance.
Thanks for any advice in advance...

24GB RAM gets cost ly when you look at 800MHz FBDIMMs in 2x4GB
You shoudl have added more as 4GB is vary basic and miinimal
Any SATA drive device is fine. WD Black 1-2-4TB / WD 10K VRs are fast but not as quiet though I do hear those WD Blacks.
A single SSD for a system is nice.
10.6.8 works best  in  that system.
Your GPU most  probably is in need of an upgrade.
You should never need to do a reinstall of the OS. Clone. Yes. And start wit h a new OS by not upgrade in place over the old OS but that is when to clean install, clone and use Set up Assis tant.

  • Mac mini questions and advice.

i'd like to eventually purchase a mac mini, but is the apple care protection plan worth it??? sorry multiple questions will a fully loaded mac mini 160 gb hard drive and 2 gigs of ram be an improvement over my current set up... pentium 4, 1.60 GHz.... 1.59 GHz, 512 mb of ram... 70.2gb hard drive
one more question, will there be any trouble hooking up the mac mini to my 32 inch sony lcd.
sorry for all the questions, would appreciate any advice and feedback.

Can you give us the model number of your 32 inch Sony lcd? The Mini supports resolutions up to 1920x1200. We need to find out what kind of beast your 32 inch Sony is; it sounds kinda big for a regular monitor -- more like a TV display.
Hard to say if the Mini will be an improvement over your PC, unless we know what programs you want to run. It would obviously be an improvement in term of security; you won't be worrying about keeping virus definitions up-to-date every week.
I use a KVM switch to run my Mini and a PC with an IBM keyboard and a Dell LCD monitor. I had to experiment with several models of KVM to find one I liked.
I also use Parallels to run Windows and Linux directly on my Mini at the same time I run Mac OS. Useful for work-flows that require Mac and WinXP/Linux programs simultaneously.
You can buy and register AppleCare anytime during your first year of ownership. AppleCare gives you access to phone support, which might be useful to a first-time Mac user. You can buy AppleCare for less from some on-line retailers -- for example google for lacomputercompany. Be sure you buy the correct AppleCare for your Mac.
Wireless generally works fine, though some non-apple wifi routers with old firmware have issues. In instances of range or compatibility problems, often a wireless ethernet bridge can solve the problem. These are inexpensive and involve no software, since they plug into the mini's ethernet port.
If you are doing massive one-time file transfers, I'd strongly recommend connecting your Mini directly via ethernet cable to your router. This will save time and eliminate several possible sources of trouble. Save the wifi for your web interactions after you transfer the bulk of files from your PC.
Regarding pictures and music ... if they are in standard formats like mp3 and jpg, then iTunes and iPhoto should be able to import them just fine. If the music is protected by Microsoft's "plays-for-sure" digital rights management scheme, you may be out of luck. If your music is already in iTunes for Windows, also no problem.
Although you didn't ask, at some point you may need external storage for your Mini. Be sure to get an external drive that supports Firewire. This is preferable to drives that just support USB, though you can get models that support both. Firewire will be significantly faster and more reliable with your Mac.

This question might be lame but I gotta ask it...
Will I have issues if I take a DV stream that was created on an Intel Mac and then use it on a G4 eMac that isn't an Intel?
    Just curious?
    Thank you for your time,
    Evan Jacobs

DV Stream (.dv file extension) will be the same on any machine (even PC's).

  • Simple Question, need advice. BOBJ vs. BI

I didn't know where to post this, but I need advice.
I have been working as a SAP BI Developer for past 2 years. I have an opportunity to transition into BOBJ (means I will not be in BI team).
Wanted to know if this is a good career move, but have few questions.
    1) Which is easier BOBJ or BI?
    2) Which is more in demand and will be for next 10 years?
    3) I've heard that there's a very high chance to work from home as a BOBJ Developer compared to BI Developer? True/False?
    4) Is pay for either the same?
    Thanks in advance.

"Having extra cores will be a distinct advantage..." ?
Better optimized to take advantage or to handle the scheduling of threads?
Right now, it is a mixed bag and give applications a year to be recompiled and optimized - or longer. The transition to Leopard also has taken more than a year to get where it is.
I would not discount last year's 2.8GHz 8-core as a better buy and value.

  • Setup question and advice for Lightroom 4.1

    Hi,
I'm upgrading from LR 3.6 to  LR 4.1 on my Windows 7 laptop with 8 gigs ram. I  need to free up space on my internal hard drive, so I'm moving my images to a 1T external hard drive, connected via usb 2.0 unfortunately.
question 1: Does it matter in what order I do the above? In other words, should I do the upgrade to 4.1 first and then move my images/catalogue to the external hard drive or should I move my images and then upgrade?
I've heard talk about how LR 4.1 is slower than  LR 3.6, so I'm, a little worried about performance.
quesiton 2: Does anyone have an specific advice about configuring LR for best performance considering my files will be stored on external hd via USB 2?
(I only use this computer for web surfing and imaging programs. Besides LR, I also run Camera Raw,  PS CS 5, and Premiere Elements. I  was thinking about making two catalogues- still images which I would move to the ext hd and movie clips which I would keep on the internal hd. Does that make sense? )
    thanks in advance,
    D

Doesn't matter, as long as you do it properly

It is slower for some people, and not slower for other people. I don't think anyone in these forums has figured out what the reason is for slowness on some computers. The only thing you can do is try it on your computer. By the way, as far as I have read, the performance problems in Lightroom are not related to USB 2.

Nope, multiple catalogs doesn't make sense to me. You are just reducing your efficiency by having multiple catalogs here. One catalog is easier, that way you never have to switch back and forth, you never wind up importing into the wrong catalog, you can search across all your photos and videos, etc. One catalog is the way to go.
By the way, did I mention that one catalog is the right way to go? Because if I didn't mention it, let me state that one catalog is the way to go.

  • Simple Question - desktop folders

I have a simple questions about moving Desktop Folders - when I move the folder into the HD, to exactly where I want it among my many folders, there is a copy that stays on the desktop. I then start saving things to one or the other, and they do not update together. The result is two half-full folders, one of which refuses to leave the desktop when I try to move it. Why does this happen, and how can I avoid this without just deleting one and possibly loosing info?

where is you user account? is it a network user? or local? is the HD the same as the system disk?
