Intel SSD 510 120gb in Macbook Pro 2010

Hi all. I have bought an Intel SSD 510 series 120gb and installed it instead of Superdrive. After that I cloned the Macintosh HD disk to a new SSD.
I moved user's home directory to the HDD drive, enabled noatime for SSD, turned disk sleep off and hibernate to 0. Everything works fine. Today my friend told me that Mac OS X 10.6.7 does not support trim command and my SSD resource will not be long. I checked System Information and saw that he was right. In the sistem information there is a line: TRIM Support:          No. I know that new 2011 macbook pro comes with TRIM support: yes function. How can I enable TRIM support in Snow Leopard for my SSD?
Thank you very much.

Recently installed same type of SSD (Intel 520 120GB) in our 2010 Macbook (white) and runs just as well as its big bro. No problems at all. Storage isn't an issue since most stuff's in the cloud these days and we carry large files around on a USB stick. Way to go!

  • Move full SSD / Drive from busted Macbook Pro 2010 to older model

    Hi,
I have a 13" Macbook Pro 2010 model whose logic board has failed. I want to take the SSD (installed with Snow Leopard and full of files and folder structures I want to keep) out of this busted computer and move it over to a Late 2007 Macbook Pro model I have lying around to get access to the drive again. I know in theory, I can install a SSD into this model, but can I install an SSD that is already formatted by my newer model? Are there things I need to consider?
And if the answer is yes, BUT it can be slightly unstable, can I go about mirroring the drive onto an external hardrive once it is in the 2007 model, wiping the SSD, reinstalling the SSD with a fresh boot and then transferring file structure from mirrored drive back onto the freshly installed SSD in my 2007 model? Does that sound like a good process?
    Thanks.

The OS is  machine-specific, so I doubt that an OS installed on a SSD on a 2010 would even boot a 2007 model.
You can TRY to install the drive into the 2007 model and use the installation disc(s) that came with that model to install the OS. It might work, might not. More likely than not, you're just going to have to erase the SSD, from Disk Utility on your installation disc, and start anew.

  • Regarding Intel SSD 520 and MacBook Pro 2010 13.3"

    Guys,
Can I ask that is this SSD compatible with my MacBook Pro? I tried installing it and now I am facing every problems there is that unables me to go to my desktop. I tried following the guide on ifixit.
My approach is I tried restoring from time machine using OSX Uttilities on startup. But once it reaches 15% it prompts the message saying things like restore fail, restart to try again. I tried a few times and the result is the same. After that I tried giving up and try reinstall a clean version of Mountain Lion. But my laptop fail the eligibility to install OSX.
After that I tried insert my Snow Leopard DVD and tried booting while holding down C. But there is this system error that asked me to hold the power button to restart in multiple language.
Anyone has this problem? Please? How should I fix this or at least what should I do to use my newly purchased SSD?

    Did you prep the SSD?
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Slow shutdown on macbook pro 2010 ssd

My ssd macbook pro 2010 13 inch takes 20 sec for shutdown and around 25 for booting up. I have tried clean my mac, onyx etc but with no improvements. All software are updated and I am only using 90 GB out of 128 GB. All apps are closed prior shutdown. As a side note, my girlfriends early 2008 macbook pro shuts down within 5 sec with a regular HD
    Any ideas?

  • Macbook Pro 2010 SSD Question

    Hello,
I've been thinking off adding a little better speed to my macbook pro 2010. It's not slow as ive upped the 4gb memory to 8gb which has made a good difference however I still want to add a bit extra under the hood.
I have contemplated getting the new macbook pro but if the ssd speeds things up then I may as well get a 500gb SSD.
I heard that you cannot use a SATA III is this correct or can I use one of those in a macbook pro 2010?
your advice and help would be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Mark

    the Samsung EVO says the following;
Interface: SATA 6Gb/s (compatible with SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 1.5Gb/s)
I'm guessing this means it should be okay?
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Install an SSD from my old macbook pro into a new one without reformat - time machine problem!

    Hi all!
I've bought a new macbook pro 13" 2012 to replace my old macbook pro 2010.
In my old macbook pro 2010 I was using an Sandisk 480 SSD that has everything working and installed, as I sold the old one, I put my hard drive and format it to sell to my friend.
In the new macbook 2012, I soon I receive it, I replace the HDD with my old SSD an everything works normally except some problems that I'm discovering now!
MY new macbook boot without no problems and until now every software that I've testes is working ok! Some of them ask me to register again but all of them is working.
My problems starts with my VPN configuration, the new macbook looses all my VPN connections, but as it wasn't so much (only 6) I'm reconfiguring them as I need it.
My worst problem is happening with time machine backup. When I start my mac with the tima machine disk, it ask me if I want to inherit the old backups and I click to accept it, but the systems spends a lot of time searching for the time machine disk and them shows an error telling that is impossible to write on the disk.
I've checked the disk in disk utility and it's mounted as read/write. But I've tried to create a new directory on the disk and receive an error of operation denied!
What or where should I look to solve this problem?? Thanks!

You can resolve that by installing the 10.6.6 Combo Updater instead of the smaller incremental updater.
+BTW, you should never use a version of OS X that's older than the version that shipped with the computer.+

  • Macbook Pro (2010) vs Macbook Air (2011)

I have a Macbook Pro (2010 model, 15" screen, i7 2.66ghz, 500gb 7200rpm drive) which I currently use for work which includes some photoshop. I am a little tired of lugging it around as it is quite heavy especially when you include the power pack and wireless mouse. So I was considering getting the 2011 Macbook Air (13", i7 1.8ghz, 256gb SSD drive) as a replacement.
According to this web site (http://www.primatelabs.ca/geekbench/mac-benchmarks/) the Air (5786) scores marginally better than my Pro (5562).
Before (and if) I make my purchase I was hoping someone here knew more about a direct comparison of these notebooks and wouldn't mind sharing their knowledge.
    Thanks!

The 1.8GHz dual-core i7 Air is 32% slower than your 2.66GHz dual-core i7 Pro in all respects other than hard drive speed. In highly disk-intensive operations, the Air's SSD may make up the difference, but in pure processing operations, your Pro has a big edge. For graphics, the Air's integrated GPU with shared VRAM is considerably less powerful than your Pro's discrete GPU and dedicated VRAM. Nothing in the Air is upgradeable; your Pro can be outfitted with a larger hard drive or a faster SSD and twice as much RAM as the Air will ever have. All the non-resizable user-interface elements (menu bar and its text, dialog boxes and their text, tool palettes and toolbars in many apps, etc.) will be dramatically smaller and may be hard to read on the Air, unless your Pro has the optional high-resolution 1680 x 1050 display, in which case things will be the same size on the Air screen, but you'll see less of them because there are fewer pixels in its screen.
I think sticking with the Pro is a no-brainer. To lighten your load, leave the mouse at home and use the wonderful features of the MBP's trackpad. The Pro will never be as light as an Air, but it's a substantially more capable computer, and best of all, you've already paid for it.

About month ago I changed my 1 year old MBP 2009 to MacBook Pro 2010 17" i7 one. I moved SSD (Patriot KOI 256GB) and 8GB of RAM to new device. I have noticed strange problem - sometimes filesystem crashes. When application ask to reboot system (because of reboot or instalation) sometimes system refuse to start - it shows progress bar similar to the one shown when going back from deep sleep. Or I can hear bell (standard one) but after this system powers off. The only way to have system working back is to use Disc Warrior to repair it because Disk Utility from install DVD can't repair filesystem and suggest to reinstall it and take data from backup.
I have no such problems with previous device. It happens even on fresh system for example just after installing Norton Internet Security (when installer asked for permission to reboot). I have no sudden hangs, no other problems at all.
    Any suggestions?
During month it happens about 10 times. I even prepared my rescue USB with installed system and Disk Warrior.
Hardware test goes without problems. SMART status of drive is ok.

You can ignore the advice of nearly all the long-time contributors to these Discussions and keep Norton utilities on your Mac, but I guarantee that every time you mention Norton anything in these forums, you will be advised to remove it completely. Perhaps it isn't responsible for your present problem, but I'm certainly not convinced of that, and because Norton software is a well-known cause of trouble in OS X, I suspect many other people reading this thread won't be convinced either.
When you reinstalled the OS on your new machine, did you do so from the DVDs that came with it? Did you completely erase the hard drive?

  • Macbook pro 2010 keeps crashing

    hi,
it has been a good 2 weeks that my macbook pro 2010 13in keeps crashing. It can happen during games or even during light browsing. When it does occur i can hear the sound being looped in the backround. Ive brought it in to apple twice already and they cant seem to reproduce the problem. The temperature doesnt seem to be an issue because even light browsing 50C it crashes. I have to do a hard reset to get it working and sometimes it doesnt recognize my drive or the apple logo boots and after some time it has an O (nothing can load, kinda like no smoking signs with the barred cigarette). Occasionally it also has wifi problems, it disconects and does not reconnect unless i hard reset. All these problems also occur on the windows partition (same circumstances). Please i need some help because i have work and i cannot trust an unstable computer to do work on. (im also running on 10.9) crashes only started after i updated but only on the windows side first.

  • Kernal Panic Help with Macbook Pro 2010

    Hello fellow Kernal Panic enthusiasts.
I've had random panics more frequently on a Macbook Pro 2010. I've tried correcting permissions, resetting PRAM etc. It seem to happen at random, sometimes with flash (which has been disabled by default) in Chrome. Other occasions its completely random when using the finder, etc. Chrome crashes frequently, and again at random. Same happens for Firefox and Safari – it seems to be whichever I am using most frequently There's no way to repeat the panic.
Thank you for the help/suggestions in advance.
Here's a copy of my log:

Pace is a copy protection software for some third party program your running, it's for Snow Leopard and this issue has appeared here before and once today even.
Quark Inc was here about their driver, so check them for a update.
Take note of the softwares above, your going to be reinstalling some of them from fresh sources and updating.
Run through the Steps 1-8 here and see if that solves your problem.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Disable all at login/boot softwares.
Yes some third party software mentioned above is not going to work as #8 Reinstall Just OS X will kick their parts out of OS X itself (but not out of Applications), but what you do is reinstall them one at a time, when it's been updated and verified to work with your OS X verison. (uninstall using the developers program or instructions, do not use AppDelete type software)
Take your time and if problems come back you know it's the last one installed is at fault.
The object with #1-8 is to make sure machine and OS X is fine, then decide from there what third party software is at fault.
If your problems continue despite the above software not being run or installed, then proceed with the further Steps #9-16 in the hunt for the real cause.
Chrome has been known to cause problems around here, it runs a root level updater for all Google software, it's hard to remove and one has to not use any Google software to prevent it being reinstalled.
Good luck in your process of elimination.

    Crucial m4 512GB SSD - from Amazon - $389.99.
    Crucial m4 256GB SSD - from Amazon - $203.84.
    Crucial m4 128GB SSD - from Amazon - $112.87.
    Crucial 8GB RAM for 2010 15" MacBook Pro - from Crucial - $47.99.
What to do with your old RAM? Just trash it or label it and put it in an anti-static bag and put it in your 'parts' drawer. Or trash it. Or give it away. It's not worth anything.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

see the GPU have problems on Mavericks..
I am wonder, do anyone here using this MacBook Pro, with OS 10.10.1 also experience this problems?
OR on newer OS X 10.9.5 this is fixed?
I ask for that is because want to upgrade to latest OS X or so. But before install hope know any problems will meet.
