Intel upgrade made Compiz go bananas

Okay I've been having problems with Compiz and spawning windows recently in that emerald shut itself off whenever a window popped up (say, if I opened an application or received an instant message).
So an update came along, installed it. Now when a window opens in Compiz the screen goes black except for the cursor and neither the touchpad nor the keyboard responds.
It's been like a series of downgrades with Intel+Compiz lately. First there was a performance decrease, then the window decoration issue, now it freezes entirely. What the heck, Intel?

Im not getting a similar error to the one mentioned above, but I am encountering some strange problems with intel and compiz (glx / dri / 3d in general i think)
It all started when I noticed that loading large images in Firefox would cause Xorg to lock up (I could move the mouse, and non-gui apps that were already running (mpd) still ran). Out of curiousity, I tried reproducing the problem while running Xorg without xorg.conf. It still crashed, but it started itself back up on vc/8. Xorg left a nasty looking backtrace (*** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/Xorg: double free or corruption (!prev) --- followed by a backtrace) on my vc/7 which mentioned libdricore.so, i965_dri.so, and libglx.so.
I am getting a bunch of random windows opening when I first login to GNOME (I can see the windows' icons in AWN - they close immediately though).
Im currently investigating the cause of the problem on my system (this is fun!)

No way. You need to buy CS6 or sign up for Creative Cloud. There's no magic switch and upgrade eligibility for CS ended by the time around CS3... You are way behind the times...

  • Xorg + xf86-video-intel lags with compiz / high cpu usage without it

I have recently noticed that my X server lags. It happens approximately once per second (it's fairly regular) and it can be easily observed when watching movies, dragging windows or rotating cube. Screen just hangs for some milliseconds. Lags are bigger and happens more often when many windows are opened.
Even worse things happen when I'm _not_ running compiz. X's cpu usage spikes permanently up to 30-40% and lags are even more noticable.
    My hardware:
    Laptop with Intel GMA 950
    Configuration
I tried some different xorg.confs but it seems to be irrevelant. It happens even on plain conf created by 'Xorg -configure'
    xorg-server 1.5.3-3
    mesa 7.2-1
    xf86-video-intel 2.4.3-1
    kernel26 2.6.27.8-1
I also tried downgrading these packages to
    xorg-server 1.4.2-2
    mesa 7.0.3-3
    xf86-video-intel 2.3.2-1
    kernel26 2.6.27-1
and it seems to resolve cpu usage problem but not the lags.
Does anybody know what might cause these lags? It's really annoying.

It turned out that color depth was the issue. I think that 24bit is too big for my graphics card and compiz (although I remember that i810+24bit+compiz worked fine).
So changing DefaultDepth in xorg.conf to 16 fixed the problem. Is there any other way to workaround this without decreasing color depth?

  • 3rd party plug-ins for Intel upgrade

anyone know how 3rd party companies will deal with the intel cross-over??
will there be only a small xgrade fee or have to buy the complete new software at the full price?

I'd be surprised if any companies don't offer an upgrade.
Native Instruments estimates about $29 per plug. Spectrasonics already has a free public beta of Stylus RMX.

  • PPC to Intel Upgrade

So, here is my situation, I have had my PPC G5 for about 2 years and my wife for about a year. Shortly there after, BAM, Intel based Macs hit the shelves. After all of the money invested in these machines (upgraded ram, air port cards, etc.) I don't really feel that dropping that sort of cash is the best move, but I want to upgrade to an Intel based mac...for obvious reasons.
The question, is it possible to update the hardware of a PPC to Intel? The way Macs are set up, my first thought is no, but hey, beyond gaming and graphic design, I know jack about computers. If it is not possible, is anyone aware of a trade in program, one where you could get credit for your current tower to put toward a new one?
    Thanks for the help!

No. The designs are very different.
The best trade-in program is taking advantage of one of the key differences between Macs and Windows PCs - Higher resale value. Sell it on eBay or locally through Craigslist.
I have had my PPC G5 for about 2 years and my wife for about a year.
Not sure how the wife is part of the picture here...
If you added a hard drive, you can keep that for your new Mac (if it's a Mac Pro) or use it in an external case for Time Machine on any new Mac. You should remove all the extra RAM and just keep the stock RAM installed. You generally get more if you sell your upgrades separately, such as the RAM module matched pair(s) and the AirPort kit. If you bought Leopard, install the original Mac OS X installation and sell the Leopard license. But be sure to include the original discs and manual with the Mac; the discs are always part of the Mac package.
There are plenty of people who want the last and fastest of the PowerPC Macs, like the one you have. It can run PowerPC (non-Universal) apps better and faster without the Rosetta emulation needed by Intel Macs, and run Classic apps under Tiger. If it's two years old, it's probably one of the "dual core" models (as opposed to he earlier dual single core models), which to me is more valuable. And it's still pretty fast running Leopard, if you have at least 2GB of RAM, compared to dual core Intel Macs like iMacs and MacBook Pros.

  • PPC G5 intel upgrade.

    Hello,
I know this is a silly question but I'd figure I'd throw it out there...
Is it possible to upgrade the mother board from PPC to Intel? I love my machine but don't want to spend the $$$ on a new tower.
    I have a PPC G5 Dual 1.8GHz w/ 4 GB of Ram

FYI, for future questions, the forum for G5 towers is here:

It's quite active with a lot of real G-series gurus living there.

  • To surrender or not to surrender FCP studio disks for intel upgrades

I don't have intel chips in my macs, but I am doing work with a guy that has the FCP studio 5.1 upgrade. Some assets are not backwards compatable.
I could go up, but I dont' like the idea of having to give back my discs in case a drive fails and I have to reload FCP.
What are you you guys doing about making the migration?

I used Disk Utility to make images of the discs before I sent them in. I also sent them in right before vacation, and when I got back they were waiting for me.
You could also just clone your system drive before sending them.
There's plenty of ways to prepare yourself for a potential crash, especially since it only takes about a week for the exchange.

  • Installing software with intel upgrade - Rosetta

I currently running Toast on my Powermac, and have the original boxed version. Toast 7 has an intel update, so I can use it on an intel imac, that is on the way.
I will have to install the original version first, then download the intel update.
Will I have to activate Rosetta to do this - or is Rosetta activated by default.

    Karen S wrote:
Thank you,I tried to mark this "helpful" but keep getting an error.
So, if I understand correctly, I can install any pre-intel app, just like normal, and then do the upgrade to the intel version, also just like nomal.
Correct Some non intel/UB apps perform better than others in Rosetta. But unless its something really demanding, you'll likely not have any problems at all.

  • Intel upgrades?

I searched but could not find any definate responses so here I go. I am currently using 2 ghz intel core duo 20" imac and was wondering about upgrading to a 2.33ghz core 2 duo and graphics upgrade.
    1. Is it possible?
    2. If I can upgrade cpu can I upgrade ram to 3gigs?
    3. My profiler lists my graphics as PCIe but also read that this is soldered on the board. Is there still achance to go upto 256 as I have only 128?
    4. Do I have to go through apple for parts and service?
I know this seems like a lot but after I got my imac home, after years of trying to convince my wife these are far better computers, it is being used alot more my everyone. Pc getting alot of rest. I did search and found responses but not a definate yes or no. Hope I am in the right place to post, first post here. Thanks to all who respond.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
These kind of upgrades are going on all over:
    Mac Mini upgrade.
    Mac Pro - 8 processor.
As already stated this are serious expensive upgrades for which you get just a few percent gain in processor. Processor speed is just a factor in computer speed anyhow.
Apple will never support this upgrade but when the 3GHz dual laptop (i.e. Merom not Conroe) processors get cheap it might be worth trying. By then they'll be plenty of guides online. Right now it's not worth it.
Only the 24" iMac stands the change of getting a video upgrade in future as it is on a removable board however who knows if there will ever be MXM Graphics cards for Mac on sale.

  • ProMac Intel Upgrade Path

Since we know that Apple will be introducing an Intel based "ProMac" to replace the G5 PowerMac sometime in the near future, I would be interested in getting opinions from this forum on the concept of internal board replacements for PowerMacs. If Apple were to offer a way to replace the required internal components to convert a G5 to an Intel machine would you buy it? I realize that this is a departure in normal practice for Apple but the PowerMac G5 enclosure is such a nice piece of work with plenty of internal volume it would seem wasteful not to consider some form of mechanical upgrade path. Apple could offer warranty options depending on whether they installed the upgrade or it was DIY job. Also, if Apple does not do this it would seem like a great opportunity for a third party supplier.

Apple has never offered a logic board replacement, and hasn't offered a CPU upgrade since the PowerMac 8600. So it's very unlikely.
But anyway, anything anyone could way would be just speculation which isn't appropriate for the Discussions which are for technical issues on existing products. So we'll have to leave it at that.

  • Mavericks upgrade made CS5 VERY wonky!

Encore CS5 freezes/crashes whenever I try to switch the build format to Blu-ray (from DVD- I own a LaCie Blu-ray burner). This worked just fine with Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Any suggestions? I wish I had never upgraded my Mac OS. CS5 had numerous problems after the upgrade, AND a fresh install (complete with updates). I spent most of my weekend trouble-shooting these issues. I fixed most of them (corrupt permissions and cache files being parts of the problem) but this one Encore problem still remains. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
