Intel Virtualization disabled on my Mac Mini?
We've successfully installed and run Parallels Desktop for Mac on two MacBooks and a MacBook Pro in order to run Windows XP Professional virtual machines.
On my Mac Mini, however, when I set up a virtual machine and am installing the guest OS from a Windows XP Pro installer CD, I get the following message from Parallels Desktop:
"Your CPU supports Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) but it is currently disabled (locked by firmware). Virtual machine will be started without VT-x support (in software virtualization mode)."
Has anyone seen this message before? Is there some reason why VT-x would be turned off on my Mini and not on our other machines? Is it easy to turn on? I couldn't find a reference anywhere.

o Mac Mini, 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo, 512MB RAM (to be expanded soon)
o Host OSX: Up-to-date 10.4.7

This is a known issue; if you search the Parallels support boards, you'll see what I mean. It appears that a number of units shipped with VT-x turned off, while many other units shipped with it on. It is turned on in my unit, though I'm not sure if it was shipped that way, or if it was enabled when I updated the firmware. If you haven't already downloaded the update and installed it, I'd try that first.

well I suppose that Apple is going to replace all intel 4000 GPU with the Intel Iris Pro. Is there any information about using this hardware in mac mini too? Is there any official anouncement about that? This Iris Pro is sharing the CPU or is it a part of it? Does this GPU has any GDDR5 VRAM or it is using the DDR3 main system RAM? Disable screen saver - Mac mini with OS X version 10.6.4
I am trying to disable the screen saver on a Mac Mini with Mac OS X version 10.6.4.
I have tried to disable it from System Preferences setting it to "never" and I have tried as well using the "defaults" command to set the idleTime in com.apple.screensaver to 0. Unfortunately, the screen saver starts after 20 minutes.
I have checked and there is no process with a name similar to screen saver.

Thank you for your answer. The energy settings are set to never. I checked it as well with pmset -g. In addition, the screen saver in the com.apple.screensaver plist file appears after 20 minutes of inactivity.

Using iMac6,1 Intel Core 2 Duo with Mac mini for Mavericks?

I am using iMac6,1 (white) Intel Core 2 Duo which works perfectlly fine and I hope to keep using this machine as long as I can.
I've learned, however, that OS Mavericks does not run on my iMac6,1 and Apple will no longer support it.
I am very attached to this machine and am not ready to face a new iMac display with a bold black frame...I just don't find it very attractive.
So I came up with an idea to buy a Mac mini and use my white iMac as a display.
Does this idea work?
I know nothing about computer so please laugh if I am being silly.

thanksI happy to see the Core i7 option in the non-server configuration, but very disappointed in the regression only having an integrated GPU. I use a 27" Thunderbolt Display with the 2011 Mac Mini 2.5Ghz with 6670M discrete graphics. It does "ok" for casual use, though it really struggles with full-screen HD video (there's a very noticeable choppiness), at least in Safari. It's passable with Firefox or Chrome, though even there the computer's fan revs up at times. Also, actions such as swiping Launchpad screens exhibits a noticable lag.
My usage includes casual desktop stuff like email & web browsing, but also full screen video, photo manipulations in Lightroom & Photoshop, and occasional video work in Premiere Elements. In addition to the video issues I described above, I see what feel like "long" delays (compared to my Core i7 Windows 7 box) when doing things like opening a 16MP Nikon raw file in Photoshop from Lightroom. It's usable since I'm not doing this for a living, but it's annoying.
I wonder with the 2.6Ghz quad-core CPU and Intel 4000 GPU configuration how overall performance would compare to my present setup...
I realize many will just say the Mini isn't the right box for what I am doing. But the iMac or MBP don't allow me the flexibility to upgrade just the computer & keep my current display. So I'm trying to discern whether upgrading to the best possible 2012 Mini configuraiton would provide a noticable improvement over the 2011 model or if the Intel 4000 vs 6670M would negatively offset the CPU upgrade. -
Windows Vista won't let my Mac mini print
the problem is I have a PC running Vista with a usb printer attached to it, I have printer sharing turn on the firewall is disable. A Mac Mini (PPC, 10.4.11) it connects to the network wirelessly the firewall on it is disable too, I want the mini to use the PC's printer too. the PC is not being friendly I've tried every I know to get the printer working. I can see the PC from the Mini but it's grayed out, from the PC I can fully access the Mini. HELP what am I missing for the Mini to access the PC's printer.

I want to make my Mac Mini Server (Lion) visible to the Internet from my home LAN. I have followed the Lion server install wizards and also set up a dynamic DNS at DynDNS.com.
When I enter the Internet address with the proper alias from a web browser, I get dumped into the admin screen of the Linksys wireless router WRT300N. Hint: the WRT300N provides DHCP for the LAN, not the cable modem providing DHCP. The WRT300N has DDNS service set up. NAT and RIP are disabled. The Mac Mini DHCP is reserved.
Suggestions? I could use the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 to provide DHCP but have hesitations.

The WRT300N has DDNS service set up. NAT and RIP are disabled.
The chances are, you're running NAT somewhere in your network. If not the WRT then what? If it's your cable modem then you must have port forwarding configured on the cable modem, and that's where you need to focus - change the port forwarding to point to your Mac Mini's address rather than the WRT.
HOWEVER, it is far more common to have the wireless router perform NAT and DHCP, which is why I question your setup.

Nix this. Your server should be configured manually, with a static IP address, not DHCP, even with a reservation in the DHCP server. The only advantage of DHCP is for dynamic hosts (hence the 'D' in 'DHCP') or if you expect to change your entire local subnet on any kind of frequent basis. The reality is that you can't just change the IP address of Mac OS X Server like this - there are too many dependencies, so it's better to set it manually, knowing that there's a cost (and pain) to change the server's address. -
Will new Mac Mini match/outperform my '04 PowerMac Dual G5/1.8?

For the past couple of years I've run a small video editing business using Final Cut Studio and my trusty PowerMac G5 1.8. I'm about to get out of that business, but want to still be able to edit using Final Cut from time to time. I want to be able to do all of the consumerish word processing, web, photo (iPhoto or Aperture), etc. I also play Unreal Tournament sometimes, but I'm not a hard core gamer.
My G5 -- with 3 GB RAM and the ATI Radeon 9600 XT w/128MB DDR SDRAM video card -- has been fine for all this. My question is: would a new Mac Mini let me down for any of the activities above, relative to my G5? Would I be able to run all of my Final Cut Studio apps? And, would UT run at least as well?

SPP Bluetooth devices not listed in Mac mini
Hi,
We're developiong Bluetooth supported hardware. the hardware supports bith SPP & iAP.
Works fine on any iOS device (iAP protocol)
Works fine (SPP) on an old Mac mini machine.
Works fine (SPP) on any android device.
But, on a new Mac mini machine the device won't even get listed in the Bluetooth devices list.
Old Mac mini (Device is working perfect):

VMWare Fusion 4.0 won't install on my quad core i7 Mac Mini
I just bought a new Mac Mini and while trying to install my copy of VMWare Fusion 4.0 it gives me an error message saying that VMWare will only install on Mac's with Intel processors. Since my Mac Mini has an Intel processor....I wonder what's up?

I have a intel core 2 Duo 2010 Unibody Mac Mini, I love it to bits! but i'm one of those people who needs to keep up with the new products, i was wondering what, if any, the difference is between my Intel Core 2 Duo 2010 Mac Mini and the new i5 Mac Mini?
JakeThe i5 is a newer generation of processor.
The architecture is different: it is faster and more power efficient.
Also, the new mini has a thunderbolt port, which will be great if you need to transfer large volumes of data to and from portable storage.
If you really want to get into technical details, you should visit the intel site. But as far as you're concerned the above is what matters.
Oh -- I misread your post! Just talked about the processor:
There are many differences between the new mini and the old one
1. No DVD drive
2. Faster graphics
3. Faster pprocessor
4. Support ofr SDXC cards
5. More storage
Also, the new mini comes with Lion!
You should just look at the list of features on the apple site and compare to the model you purchased! -
Mac Mini Intel 512MB 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo totally useless after update
After performing an update of a Mac Mini 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB of RAM, the system no longer functions.
The system will boot up and display the desktop, but all of the accessories in the upper-right corner (Date, Volume Control, Eject, etc.) never show up. All it does up there is display solid white, then it doesn't display anything (just displays the menu bar regular background color).
QuickTime automatically launches on startup, and it appears to stay up until I click on QuickTime and select "Preferences", then it closes.
The only other application that launches is iTunes. I can't get ANYTHING else to launch, including Safari, Terminal and Console. I can't even get "About this Macintosh" to come up. It's lucky I set this particular system up some time ago to accept SSH connections, otherwise I don't know how I would be able to see what's going on. I can SSH into the system from another system (another Mini as it turns out). It's with this that I can see what's going on.
I looked at "top" and I keep seeing "ReportCrash" starting up, running for a few seconds, then terminating and then relaunching with another process ID. Evidently something is crashing and it's trying to report the crash, but it can't complete the process.
I looked at the Software Update Logs (located at /Library/Logs), and here is what it says it updated last night:

This process and Spotlight are two processes that seem to be crashing over and over.
It seems to me that the update last night pushed the memory profile of the "base" operating system (which would seem to include the 4 items updated last night) above the threshold of what is really required for successful operation of the system. In other words the system seems to be running out of memory and essential processes are unable to run, let along other programs.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I looked and I don't see anyone else who has posted with this problem. Then again, if it's their only system, and their system is as disabled as this system is, they wouldn't be able to get online to report it anyway. And since ReportCrash keeps...well...crashing, Apple wouldn't know about it.
I feel my only alternative is to backup the files off of the system (which I am doing now), then downgrade back to OS 10.4 (the system did originally come with 10.4). I just hope I have no impediments to doing so. If I can't downgrade, I suppose I could do a clean 10.5 install and then don't do any updates, but that's no good either. My only other alternative is to upgrade the RAM, I guess.
Bottom line is this system is truly hosed and totally unusable in it's current state.
Anybody have any better alternatives?

I suggest an erase and install and use your backup for any important files you have.
Did you perform a disk check/repair and permissions repair and a PRAM zap before updating? While not required, they are usually necessary to avoid issues.
There are so many reasons for a bad install, that it is impossible to list them all.
Out-of-date software, drivers, etc, haxies, and other software can cause problems.
My three updates were without incident, so it is possible for a perfect update, but unless you supply us with details about your previous system, programs, apps, drivers, etc., it is not possible to figure out what happened.
Again, whenever installing an update to an OS, a clone or other full backup is absolutely necessary, as reading the posts on this board indicate. -
Intel Mac Mini fans run full blast even when off
Hi All,
I have gone through the forums and haven't found an answer to this one. I have an Intel Mac Mini running the latest updated Tiger that I use solely for a media center.
About a week ago, the box started running fans full blast, regardless of whether it was actually turned on or not. As soon as it is plugged in the fans blast.
Otherwise, it seems healthy, and boots normally.
The steps I have taken so far include resetting permissions, verifying the disk, and resetting the SMC in the proscribed fashion.
After this occurred, I downloaded and installed smcFanControl from Lifehacker.com. This reported fan speed of zero and Temperature of zero.
Next I opened the case and insured the fan/HD cable next to the lttle battery was securely fastened as this had been reported to cause this symptom.
What's next? The device is out of warranty and honestly, I don't want to spend any money if I can help it.
Should I take it apart further and see if the other end of the fan/HD cable has somehow worked loose?
Can anyone think of another cause besides a loose cable?
What if I completely disabled the fan? The hardest thing I ever ask it to do is run iTunes and VLC.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
DaveI have refurbished two G5s with LCS and screaming fans (this was avery common problem with G5 LCS macs), the red light on the motherboard could mean the CPUs need to be re-seated. This red LED light appeared on my mac after I had removed the CPUs to add new thermal paste.
If you have done all the necessary basics with no sucess here are a few things to try next.
1 - Coolant
As BDAqua mentioned above, coolant evaporates and often leaks at the 'O' rings, to check this you will need to remove the CPUs from the LCS and check for crystalisation (white rice). If you have leakage, it will be time to drain the block, add new coolant and 'O' rings. This is tricky to do but there is lots of info here and on other sites to help you.
2 - Thermal paste
Replace the thermal paste with Artic MX4.
Try the above and let is know how ou get on. -
Can the new Intel Mac Mini really run Win XP?
I have had my Mac Mini for almost two years now and i love it, i love it because i switched from Windows, but now i kind of miss Windows so i was going to buy a Windows PC but then i read somewhere that the new 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini can run Windows XP, so i have few questions if that is true...
1. How well will Win XP run on the new 1.66 GHz Mini with 1 Gig of RAM?
2. Which version of XP do i need to buy and where is the best place to buy it?
3. I know this might be a dumb question since Windows Vista is not out yet but do you think i will be able to use Vista as well?
Vista requires 512 of RAM for the basics and 1 Gig of RAM for max performance.

Mac Mini 1.42 GHz G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) It's small...?1) If ou run it with Boot Camp (i.e. in a dual-boot environment, rather than through virtualization), it will run as well as on a PC with 1 GB of RAM, a 1.66 Ghz Core Duo processor and GMA 950 integrated graphics (quite well, but unsuitable for recent 3D games).
2) You need a standalone (non-OEM) version of Windows XP Home or Pro with SP2 included, any retail version of Windows XP should do. There are also workarounds that allow you to install other versions of Windows (like Windows XP Media Center).
3) The Mini should be able to run Vista (some people have already installed Beta versions of Vista on Intel Minis) but how well, I don't know.
BTW Boot Camp is actually Beta software, and its license ends in February 2007 (or earlier if Leopard is released before then).
