Intel vs. power pc

hi
I have noticed with the coming of the new apple intel macs, that the processors will be a much higher clock speed than the current g4's and g5's. It seems that Mac os x is a very efficent os, not bloated like windows. How will a dual core yonah processor compare to something like a g5 or g4 with altivec? Will the clock speed mean muck?
Thanks!

"How will a dual core yonah processor compare to something like a g5 or g4 with altivec?"
Nobody here can answer that question as there are no Intel based Macs on the market to compare to. You'll just have to wait and see.

  • Intel iMac Power / Overheat issue?

    Hi there,
I have an Intel iMac from 2006. About 2 years ago it started to just turn itself off randomly as if there was a power failure. When it does, the only way to power it back up is to switch it off at the plug, switch it back on and press the power button (strangely) twice. I have noticed it seems to be temperature related - when my iMac reaches around 78C (which I'm pretty sure it should be able to handle fine?) it tends to be in the danger zone and at any minute can switch itself off.
I've got around this by using smcFan Control - which thankfully displays the temperature in the menu bar meaning when I hit around 72C I can whack the fans up to full blast to keep the temperature down. Being a sound studio computer - the hum of the fans really isn't ideal, but it at least makes my computer usable. However, I'm currently in the middle of a big project on Logic and I've had to turn my room into a fridge (window open-more clothes on) to be able to work on it as all the processing involved heats it up to 75C+ in no time.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on this or at least tell me if I am right in thinking that 78C is nothing really and the iMac should deal with it easily.
I have seen tons of posts regarding the G5 iMac power problems and similar problems with the intel iMacs - I've done all the hardware resets (PRAM, SMC, PMU) as suggested in these forums but nothing has helped.
I have had the power supply changed in the past (before this problem arose) as one day it just went kaput. Don't know if that makes any difference but I'm pretty sure that the problem started a little while after the replacement was installed.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Intel "Save Power / Increase Performance" popup

Currently starting to replace the older X series laptops with the X220's here at work.  The problem we are running into is that annoying green popup window from Intel HD graphics asking to save power or increase performance.  The window can't be moved and the users can't do much of anything for the couple minutes it stays on the screen.  It's becoming a real hassle for us helpdesk guys.
How do we get rid of this?
Removing the drivers doesn't work, they just reinstall after reboot.

From an unrelated thread out there on the web:
When unplugging the mains ac adapter in Speed mode I had an annoying green Icon in the middle of my screen for 2 minutes that said "Save power" -> "Increased performance" stays for some time on top of other windows. I renamed the file C:\Windows\System32\nvvsvc.exe This however unelegant appears to have eliminated the annoying popup, if anyone has a better solution for this do let me know.
Untested, unlikely, and a little scary.  It's the only thing I could find that even suggested a solution.  Otherwise, there are just a few other people complaining about the same thing on a variety of platforms.

  • Intel Xserve power problems

As of recently, I just started noticing a issue with powering on a new intel xserve. If the machine is running, using LOM and shut down works beautifully. After I shut it down, using LOM and the button works beautifully. If i attempt to turn it back on a few min later, it works fine.
If I leave it off for a day or so, even though the lights are on on the front of hte machine, LOM can see the server, but "power on" doesnt do anything, and hitting the front power button doesn't do anything. I have to unplug it from the UPS and replug it in for it to turn on.

    Hi Forum folks.
I've had a 6-month (ish) Xserve doing the same thing. Every day, at least once a day, I'd get an email / SMS, saying the power supply or blower was having a momentary problem.
After shutting down the server, I pulled out the Power Supply Units, and checked them out.
Turns out, one of them had a slightly damaged heat sink (damage visible without opening the PSU). So, I swapped it for a spare I'd purchased. And then got the damaged unit (damaged internally at factory by the look of it) replaced by my Apple Reseller.
Note: the newer Intel XServes (early 2008) have a 750w PSU, compared to a 650w PSU, in the 2006 Intel XServes. The older PSUs fit in the newer Xserves, but they DO NOT function. (You'll get an error in Server monitor).
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers,
    Derek

  • Question on Intel and power Mac compatibility

I have a FW 800 running 10.5 and am thinking to buy a new Macbook. I have server Leopard OS, not installed, Could I use the FW800 as a server and the new Macbook as the master. In other words will a power Mac work as a server to an Intel mac?
    Bob

Sure, is all I needed to hear. As long is there is no basic incompatibility. I don't know what a server can actually do. Storage of files, sure. I thought of reformatting some movie files in the background and maybe to take care of down load actives. I find my system getting bogged down with stuff I might be able to pawn off on the server.
    Thanks Bob

  • [SOLVED] No Sound through HDMI port in Intel after power save

    Hi,
I build an HTPC with Arch inside. I output the sound into the HDTV through the HDMI port of the motherboard, following the instruction of the archwiki. Both, the audio and the video are from the motherboard (i.e, I don't have external video or audio cards). Everything works very neat, except for one issue. When I have a couple of minutes without moving the mouse, the video goes black, like a screensaver and I also lost the audio. I guess it is a default configuration in a power saving domain, although I don't remember having installed any. Maybe it is a default of the video driver. I'm using the default xf86-video-intel driver, and I have installed the lib32-intel-dri package.
If a move mouse, the video returns normally. The problem is the audio. I guess that it's because I have the audio through the HDMI port. If I move the mouse immediately after the video and audio are gone, both return without problem. But if I leave the system into this power saving mode for a couple of minutes, and then move the mouse, the video goes back, but the system is mute. I try
    $ speaker-test -c 2
    , and also
    $ aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
and there are no errors. It seems like the sound is being played, but no longer through the HDMI port.
Is there anyway to check where that powersave comes from? Is there any way to disable it, or at least, a way to make sure that the audio is output through the HDMI port after the powersave mode?
If someone is willing to help, and need the output of command or the content of any configuration file, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance,

Thanks jv2112. I read that article before but skipped that section. I disabled all of those options, and at least, the sound doesn't disappear after the video goes black. I have tried several times, for several hours, and the sound is still there. The video still goes black, but I have my sound. Therefore, I mark this issues as solved.
    Thanks,

    Module-based Powersaving Options
The i915 kernel module allows for configuration via /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf wherein users can define powersavings options. A listing of options is available via the following command:
    $ modinfo i915 | grep power

  • INTEL AND POWER PC difference?

at work I run an intel. at home I am still stuck with a g-5 power pc. when I burn to a disk image at work (intel) and bring it home to burn on my lightscribe the .img is very badly pixelated (extremely).
Before I burn it I open it with DVD player and it really looks bad.
Could there be a "problem" between building a movie on an intel and viewing it on my power pc?
This is the second time I have gone through this process and and spent over a week on this wedding project for my niece and I get the same results every time.
the entire project is 53 minutes with 3 separate .mov files.
I guess I could try encodeing from my power pc at home, but it usually takes 24 hours.
as a side issue, does anyone know of a software program that speeds up encoding without any loss of quality?
Message was edited by: apple id number 11

I dont know but I suppose there is different encoding language (slightly) from an intel processor to a power pc processor. Compressing with intel and decompressng with a power processor equals large choppy pixelated scences and extreme contrast settings. perhaps different PCI graphic cards?
Anywho, I have it processing through my power mac, which worked the first time. I simply had over a minute of black space at the end of the first movies, so I went to cut out that portion and a week later I'm just now bearing down on the end of the re-encoding. After many trials and tribulations experimenting with different processors although same computers its the only conclusion that i can come up with. except maybe i wasnt holding my mouth just right during the process.

  • Any problem with imac intel-based -power supply?

I just took possesion of an IMAC intel-based with 10.8 os. It is good so far but I'm not sure if alot of on/off power button usage is recommended. Is it better to put it to sleep for 1 hourish, or keep popping the power button. Thanks for reading. Double Thanks for an answer.

You should turn off the iMac only when you aren't going to use it for some days

  • Intel Mac Power issue...and a few other niggles!

    Hello people.
I've got an Intel Mac 2.4ghz. I've had it about 5 months now, and it's been trouble free, all bar a few software issues. Just recently though, i've noticed a few mildly concerning...well, niggles really.
Because i'm very energy conscious, when the Mac is off, completely shut down, i turn the mains switch off. I do this with loads of things in the house (green Dan!). However, recently, i've noticed that when i turn the power on at the mains on the wall, the Mac is turning on at the same time-it's starting up just be me turning the wall socket on, and i always let the computer shut down properly before i turn it off on the wall.
Thats not the only thing it's started doing either though-i know when you turn the Mac on, you can hear the DVD drive register or whatever it is that it does. Just recently, it's started making the noise it usually does, but alot louder...and dare i say, alot harsher sounding too-like it shouldn't be doing it. The drive has performed fine time after time, but i have noticed that this has been occurring alot more frequently of late. There has only been one time the drive has played up-i popped a CD in the drive and pushed it in, but it didn't register-the drive didn't activate at all. I shut the computer down and forced ejected and it was fine-never done it since.
Since these issues have surfaced, i notice that playing music in Front Row has been affected too-the music is fine, but sometimes the album artwork-or even if there isn't any artwork, comes up all scrambled, like a corrupt file (although the same music will play another day and no scrambling will appear at all). Maybe related? I don't know.
All these problems are inconsistent though-i can't pin-point a routine or a certain act that may start any of these problems off-they just do it, then don't, then do....
Any suggestions? Or does it sound like there should be anything i should be concerned about? The computer cost too much to just overlook!
    Any help appreciated!
    Dan

    Hi.
I've unchecked the 'Restart Automatically' option, and for the time being, it hasn't done it. However, the DVD drive is still making a funny noise occasionally...
I've checked & repaired the disk permissions, and all is well. I've attached a link to my Photobucket page with a snapshot of the corrupt Front Row issue. The image is always the same, no matter which song is playing. I have noticed though, that just before the screen flips, the image returns to normal for a split second. Here's the link:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v520/DanThe440Man/Random%20Stuff/DSC00805.jpg
At the moment, thats as much info as i can give-no particular action or routine seems to trigger any of the aforementioned symptoms.

  • Intel 975x power issues?

Here is what has happened so far:
Was playing Medal of Honor Spearhead online and all was going well and the game freezes, just freezes the sound goes with it as well. Windows does not respond the computer has just frozen. It then reboots it self.
Upon rebooting it has issues; it goes to power up but doesn't. I can see my D bracket lighting up for a second then it stops, then starts again and again until finally the computer gives up and just sits there doing nothing. Medal of Honor never fails to produce the error. It happens 5 minutes or so into playing. RAM is fine as shown by Memtest.
What could be causing the problem? I'm most worried about the inability for my computer to start up. If I leave it a while it will turn on instantly but not after the game crashes. I'm just wondering whether it could be graphics card related?

Sound verry .. hmm .. horible
ok, we can try to check some "basics",....
    1) are you sure you have installed G-Card well ? ... i mean, if it fit perfectly .. sometimes can connecting video cable move with G-Card by few milimetrs (if there isnt good lock for card)...
    2) have you ever met this issues with this configuration ? ... how long have worked all well (before you have first crash)?
    3) check coolers if isnt one of them displaced ... from g-card or from CPU or chipset
---> i looking for overheating caused by bad installed cooler... mobos and cpu's have now ability to halt system if there is somthing wrong / overheated (mainly CPU of course) ... so then you must wait (often is setted up some limit in minutes in bios). In this case IT MAY BE G-Card related (g-card stoping computer from boot up...) ..... i dont know precisly if your MOBO has some kind of signalization for "overheat state"..... so do you thing that this can be your case ?
    4) problem can be related to PSU ... during playing games you have higher power consuption... maybe PSU cant supply this consuption for long time. but theory of "switching  power supplies" isnt my cup of tee ... from my point of view, it is possibly... but i dont think its problem with PSU - just try another PSU if you can
its only list of ideas and theories ... some are normal, some has very low probability

  • Intel iMac power up automatically

    Hello,
I have this problem since a few days. I shut down the computer normally and then, some minutes later, it automatic power on...
All the power options are disabled in System Preferences. The only change I have made to the computer is removing the bootcamp partition i created some months ago. I removed it with the bootcamp assistant so there shouldn't be a problem.
    Any ideas? It's very annoying.
    Thanks in advance.

I do not know what you are waiting for.
I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

  • Drive in power Mac G5 - "no volume that Mac OS X can read"

Today I "borrowed" a WD 1TB internal drive from my Mac Pro to use in my Power Mac G5.
On boot I got the following message from the G5:
"You have inserted a disk containing no volume that Mac OS X can read" followed by options to Initialise/Ignore/Eject.
On choosing Ignore, the disc shows up in System Profiler, but the volume does not show up on the desktop or in finder.
    The system specs are:
Mac Pro (the machine I took the disc from):
    - OSX 10.5.6
    - 2 x 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Power Mac G5 (the machine I put it in)
    - OS X 10.3.5
    - 2.5GHz
The hard drive is a WD Caviar Black 1 TB, 3 Gb/s SATA drive.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on the problem.

For your audio, how about native SATA running off PCI controller.
If you want a nice internal drive, grab WD 640 or two.
