Intel Xserve and Apple Xserve Diagnostics

Has anyone figured out how to run the Apple Xserve Diagnostics (AXD) that is included with the new servers? The documentation is very poor to say the least, in once instance the user guide says to see the user guide for more information. Another pdf says to refer to www.apple.com/server/documentation for information on AXD yet this site has no mention of the intel Xserve yet. I've searched the service manual and got much of the same run around.
I've managed to install the AXD on another Mac OS X server and activated the netboot image but it does not appear to run in the same manor as the Apple Remote Diagnostics for the Xserve G5s. Any help is appreciated!

Unless someone knows different the only place I know of is here:
https://gsx.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/GSXAppServer.woa
You need an Apple ID. To access the Service Source you'll probably need a Tech ID. Alternatively you could apply for the CD from Apple directly? Or from an Apple Authorized Repair Specialist. You could take the XServe directly to either of those locations and see if they can run the Diagnostic tools for you?

  • How to install 1 xserve and 2 xserve RAID ??

Hi i'm new at fiber world. Could anyone tell me how can i install 2 xserve raid on 1 xserve? In this moment i have 1 Xserve and 1 Xserve RAID conected directly with 2 fiber cables. I need to buy other xserve RAID but how can i conect it? i have to use a fiber switch? and if this is correct wich switch u recomend?
A link with schematics will be apreciated.
    Thx in advance.

In the sense that you can plug everything in and it will auto-negotiate and things will just "show up" then yes it is like an ethernet hub.
You will probably have to do some simple configuration of the Sanbox via their admin tool but as long as you're only using the Xserve/RAID it should be easy because you just have one zone and all full speed ports. The QLogic docs are good, if basic, and the admin tool is pretty straightforward - especially for an easy set-up like this.
The way that fibre is not like ethernet (just so you're aware) is cannot have two Xserves plugged in sharing the same drives. This will work if you try it but horrible data corruption will eventually occur. Fibre is like ATA or SCSI and you can't share it between host computers in it's raw form. Just to be clear.
    Good Luck,

  • Connect Intel Xserve and G4 Xserve?

I have a new Intel Xserve which I upgraded to from a G4 Xserve, which I think I'd like to keep and use to run FileMaker to serve a website. (Perhaps also use it for IP failover or backups, too, but first things first.)
How to configure them? Should I connect the G4 to the internet on en0 and to the router on en1? If the G4 is an OD replica, how does it talk to the Intel?
Any advice appreciated to point me in the right direction.

It all depends. If the router can also act as a reliable firewall, connect it to a switch and hook up both servers to the switch. You could then make whichever one an OD master and the other a Replica.
If the router isn't a real firewall, throw one in, connect to a switch, and then connect the servers to the switch.
If you're expecting the router to just be a roouter, and make your server the firewall, you're probably not taking the best approach and making you're computing life more difficult.
I don't mean to sound like a dope, but you should post back with a more complete description of your network, and what you can afford to put in your network. You can do a lot with an OS X Server or two if that's what you have, but there are better alternatives for some parts of your network.

  • MDS9000 (DS-C9124) and Apple XServe/RAID problem.

    Hi all.
Im new at this so be gentle plz. :)
We want to connect some servers and raid with fiber channel-network. So we bought this switch to do the job.
When we connect all together nothing works. Im getting this error: sfpVendorNotSupported
I cant figure out why it doesnt work. If i connect the server with raid it works flawlessly.
    Any help apreciated.
    thx
    p

I have seen that error before and it is generally associated with non Cisco "certified" SFP's. You would get that message when you hovered over the port with the mouse. HP sold us some switches and tried putting in some Brocade SFP's because they had some in stock. Once they put the right ones it, is worked.
There are only a handful of vendor SFP's around for servers and storage and you should not try to use them in the Cisco switches.
Where did your SFP's come from? If they came with the switch, thats another story.

  • Xserve and HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1840 SCSI

    Hi everyone,
I'm planning on buying a new Xserve (and an Xserve RAID) and using the relatively new HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1840 SCSI (external tape drive) to do backups. The specs are over here:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&task Id=120&prodSeriesId=3454484&prodTypeId=12169&objectID=c01121300
I just called EMC Insignia (was Dantz) and they say it's compatible with Retrospect for Macintosh Workgroup Edition. Now I'm a little confused at which Xserve BTO options to choose.
Is it correct that I will need to select these options?
    Slot 1: Dual-Channel U320 SCSI-Card with PCI-X-Riser
    Slot 2: Dual-Channel 4 GBit Fibre Channel-PCI-Express-Card
If I understand correctly I need the U320 card to connect the Ultrium and the Dual Fibre Channel to connect ONE Xserve RAID, am I correct?
    Thanks a lot!
    Björn

Yes, you have the right combination of cards there.
However, please rethink your choice of software.
There are numerous horror stories on these boards and others related to Retrospect in a Server environment. For some reason it just does not work, causing instability, hangs, poor performance and system crashes.
There are better alternatives including NetVault, BRU and Time Navigator, amongst others.

  • Old Apple xserve Raid 1.24 and New Intel Xserve

    Guys
Quick question - i currently have an Apple G5 xserve setup with an apple xserve raid {1.24} as a file sharing server in my studio
ideally i am looking to get my xserve upgraded to the new intel version but would like to know if the old xserve raid would still be compatible with the new xserve?
any info would be super appreciated!
    so7

Yes - it will work just fine. The only issue is that you'll need a new Fiber channel card for the Intel XServe since it only supports PCIe cards, not PCI-X used by the previous XServes.

  • Apple Xserve Diagnostics - where?

I bought an Xserve in October 2007. It came with the Leopard Server disks. I would like to test the hardware, due to some odd problems I'm having, as well as a failed upgrade attempt to Snow Leopard, but my Admin Tools disk does not contain the AXD program, or in fact any apparent diagnostics. I also cannot find anything in Apple's downloads or support site that would help. How do I get the diagnostics so that I can test my server?
    Thanks

    Hi Niel,
I believe your right. I just dont understand how they could not mention this in the manual. It clearly states:
    Goal:
Start up the AXD (Apple Xserve Diagnostics) EFI tools located on the admin tools disk
    Method:
D (make sure the Admin Tools disk is inserted)
It would have been nice of them to make a little note stating your comment.
My net card can't run in full duplex, whereas my MacBook Pro can, so I suspect a hardware failure. The logic board has been replaced once already. I suppose there is no other solution, than to pull the Xserve from the rack and have it serviced unless the Apple Enterprise guys has another idea.
    Thanks mate,
    Magnus

  • Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount

Apple Xserver Raid, 1 raid mounts and the other raid does not mount but all the lights on the drives are green

Kind of lacking in detail there...
Did the other volume mount in the past? and it stopped working? When? What changed?
What does Raid Admin.app have to say about it?
Does it see the drives? a RAID set on those drives? A link on the fiber channel connection?

  • XServe and 10.5 won't boot..."syncing disks killing all processes"

    Hey Everybody,
Have an Xserve Intel Quad-Core Xenon 2.8 GHz, 80gb, 2 Gb RAM. 10.5 Server.
2 Gb of RAM has been anemic. The server runs a few Cold Fusion Web Sites, DNS, OD, FTP, AFP, and Mail Services. Our mail is not light duty as we send out almost daily 70,000 e-mails to our customers.
Last week I added 2 x 4gb DIMM to bring up the RAM to 10 Gb. I added the RAM to slots 3 & 4. Saw great improvement right away. The night after, I noticed the server rebooted during the night. (Didn't look into why )
Well, I came in this morning and was checking up on the server (via ARD) and couldn't connect. Went to the server room and saw the machine was off. Not good. I restarted it and went back to my office. Checked again on ARD, and still wasn't available. Went back to server, rebooted in verbose mode (after booting with a monitor and seeing the screen show the apple with the spinning gear) and It's hanging then shutting down within three minutes of boot.
Attached is a pic of what is shown, at around 3 minutes from boot the screen will then say "syncing disks killing all processes" and the server shuts down.
I've googled all morning and have tried various methods to boot to no avail.
I removed the RAM that I added and the problem persists. I also removed the drive sled and reinserted it into the xserve and also tried bay 2.
    Other things...
Yesterday added two more web sites and the DNS for it in Server Admin.
    Any suggestions? Bad drive?
    Shaun

OK, having exactly same issue - but on a much older and much less duty machine. Dual G4 1Ghz running 10.5 Server. Noticed that I could not connect via ARD and did hard shutdown, notice identifier light was on as well. The system did reboot as I could get my mail, but when I connected a monitor to it all I had was gray screen.
Did another hard shutdown after pressing IL and not just gets to logo and spinning wheel for a short while and shuts down.
It has been up and running flawlessly for long time prior to this.
My name is Sean too, maybe that is the issue...

  • Airflow of and xserve and xraid

    Hi all,
    A question.
I am trying to put together an air conditioning system for a rack that will have 3 xserves and 2 xraids.
I am trying to find out what the airflow to the rack will need to be.
Is there anyone out there that could tell me the cfm of an intel xserve and the xraid fan systems at FULL tilt?
    Kind regards,
    Neil Watson

    CFM isn't your issue.
The fans are variable speed - they adjust based on demand and environmental conditions - and I've only ever seen them running full tilt (about 14K rpm) when there's something seriously amiss. Even under the highest loads I rarely see more than about 8K or 9K rpm.
For active cooling what is more important is either BTU (the thermal output of the server) or kW (the power draw).
Apple provide sample data for various XServe configurations in this tech note, and the XServe RAID in this one.
Your AC technician should be able to translate those figures into a suitable system for cooling your servers.

  • Are there any problems with Snow Leopard Server (Xserve) and PPC Clients

    Hi,
are there any problems identified yet with Snow Leopard Server, installed on a Xserve and PPC Clients running Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard?
Currently I have a Xserve Intel running Leopard Server and about 12 Mac Minis PPC running Mac OS X Tiger and Mac OS X Leopard. The Xserve serves services like DNS, OpenDirectory, Software Update Server, NetBoot, etc. All users have Home Directories stored on the Xserve.
Now I want to install Snow Leoaprd Server on the Xserve, but I wonder if there are any problems using the PPC Clients? I have read something like this on a german website.
    Thanks!

We've actually found that the Server 10.6.3 DVD does an amazingly smooth job of upgrading 10.5.8. We've been upgrading our production servers and nothing has gone wrong yet. Snow Leopard employs an archive and install method of upgrading which results in an install which is very close to a clean install. So it's been very convenient for us because our servers are used as Windows PDCs and it's a pain in the *** to have to re-join all PCs to the domain if we start from scratch.

  • Mapping a network folder stored on an Apple Xserve to a Windows user a/c.

I have a number of domain users who need to get there individual network folder mapped to there profile when they log onto the domain from various MAC in the building.
We use a batch file that maps the users network home folder to there profile when they log onto a PC.
Does anyone know how to do the same process for those same users loggin onto a MAC OS X leopard machine.
Users network folders are stored on a Apple Xserve. Authentication comes first from Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.
(at the moment MAC users accounts are loaded entirely from the Apple Xserve, resulting in the user constantly writing to there profile across the network.
What I would like to do instead is to 'force the local home directory on startup disk', this is an option in directory utility on each mac. This will force the profile to load locally. Then using some sort of script or batch file map the users network home folder to the desktop of the MAC. Therefore reducing traffic across the network as the user profile will be loaded loally and will only be saving to there netowrk folder)
Does this make sense, and advice appreciated...???

Check out the AD-OD Sandbox. I think there may be instructions in there on how to do it:

  • Apple XServe G5 Won't Start Up

    Hi,
My apple Xserve G5 has stopped turning on after I shut it down. When turned ut back on I pressed the power button all of the fans spin up and the System Indicatior light turns Solid Amber/Orange and does not flash. I tried leaving it on for a long period of time to see if it would start up on its own but the fans became progressivly faster and faster until I turned it off. I have tried what apple says to do and hold the indicator light when turning on the then releasing it when the processor lights start flashing. Other than turning on and off it is completely unresoponsive. Any Ideas?

Thanks... I found that the power supply on neither my G5 or G4 would start up from cold? I just leave them plugged in to keep the psu warm now.
    Thanks,

  • Can't establish ftp connection between a Xserve and a PB

We want to use a Xserve (Mac OS X Server 10.4.8) to provide webhosting, but experience problems in establishing ftp connections using a PowerBook (Mac OS X 10.4.8).
On a WinXP-based notebook using the same Internet connection, anything works fine, just not on my PowerBook.
This is what happens when trying to establish a ftp connection (via terminal):
    I type: ftp [email protected]
    Returns:
    220 star1.local FTP server ready.
    331 Password required for user.
I provide the password, anything looks fine, get this output:
    230 User starenterprise logged in.
    Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
    ftp>
Okay, now I want to see what files are in the directory using "dir" command ("ls" brings same result). This output is shown:
    502 'EPSV': command not understood.
    227 Entering Passive Mode (132,78,123,92,42,115)
Now I can either press CTRL+C to escape or when waiting around one minute, then it states this:
421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
On a ftp client software like CuteFTP Mac it shows "Can't open data connection" instead of, but result is the same.
I read through some articles I found here, but nothing compared to my problem. Please help.
I should mention one thing Apple's support told me: Since I have the same username and UID on my PowerBook as well as on the xServe, it could bring problems. However I have then added a new user to my PowerBook, result is the same. And Apple's support left helpless so far.

You said: "Not really answered, the problem persists and I now go on and let
    Apple work on it again"
As a native English speaker, I must say (and doubt any would disagree) that
your statement implied: "No one here has actually helped me fix this problem,
and now I'm waiting for Apple to fix it"
Please take care to the word "again" I used; this implies that Apple has tried to solve the issue before but failed (in fact, they stated to call me back, but this is weeks ago) and so I posted this here at the discussions.
Unfortunately I only have access to the "free" support (well, free is not the right word when paying 12 cents per minute for the phone call).
And this means (at least I can speak for the German part of Apple) that operators on the phone look at their knowledgebase and sending articles by e-mail; questions going deeper are resulting in a "we call you back" answer. Sometimes they phone back, sometimes not. Sometimes they are helpful, sometimes (or should I say "in most cases") they just give hints or ask me to investing a nice amount into premium support.
Don't misunderstand me in the direction that I demand assistance from this forum - I'm more than gradeful if I get help (and rewarded this always with giving points), it has saved me several times (many, many, many times) for doing time consuming investigations and making trial-and-error experiences by myself. If I cannot get more assistance, well I have to look elsewhere and so be a bit impertinent to Apple's support. Perhaps it helps
You are right, FTP itself works correctly. It even works fine on the WinXP notebook residing at the same LAN as my PB. Therefore the issue is at the PB's firewall very likely (or a strange relationship between two firewalls which seems not to affect WinXP).
But as you indicate, it makes no sense to lower down security just for doing ftp, especially since SSH works well. However since I have no problems doing ftp sessions with other servers, I would be eager to find the reason why it refuses in this case, even this just means feeding my curiosity
So if I come to new insights, I post them here. But I feel that I'll really need your wishes for luck to solve this problem Let's see...

  • 10.5 Server on Apple XServe M8628LL/A?

two days ago I got an Apple XServe M8628LL/A
it runs Mac OS X 10.4.11 Server, which it runs perfectly fine.
but, there a some features new in Leopard server that I could use.
the server has two 1Ghz G4's and can have up to 2GB of RAM (has 512MB now but I plan to upgrade that by adding three more 512MB modules, I know where I can get them, just need to actually place the order).
meaning, it can run Leopard, it will slow down a bit but, well, I use it for myself also public for a site but, i don't get a lot of visitors and I have a second (dell) server which can "jump-in" if the XServe can't handle all requests, so, I want to upgrade it.
there is one problem though, this model has a CD-ROM drive.
Leopard Server is, TMK, only on DVD.
so, can I get Leopard server on it, and if so, how?
there are two things I came up with but I'm not sure they'll work, leopard server does come at a price so I'd rather not "just try" I'm ok with the system slowing down a bit, but it be a waste if I can't install it.
the things I came up with:
    1. Remote Install Mac OS X, but I'm not sure that also works with Mac OS X Server.
    2. "restore" the install dvd to a firewire drive, as in, make a new partition on my external FireWire drive, make A DMG image of the install dvd and use disk utility's "restore" feature to get the contents of the DVD on the new partition, connect it and boot from the firewire drive,
if it has the contents of the install DVD it should just work as if I was using the DVD, but will it? and it this even legal? I hear that it's not as I would be making a copy of the dvd, yet, at the same time, copyright laws allow to make one copy for personal use, as I'd use if only for the installation that be personal use.
if remote install works that be easier but if not the idea with the FireWire disk is the only thing I know.
I have Leopard (desktop version) on my eMac (see below) and that runs fine, the XServe is faster so I think it will run quite good (at least, I hope).

n.v.m. think I found it, /applications/Server/Server Assistant -> Install Mac OS X Server on a remote computer....
