Intel Xserve panics with 667Mhz RAM

I have an 2x dual core 2.66Ghz Intel Xserve running 10.4.9
Currently it is running with 2 x 2Gb "533Mhz" ECC DDR2 FB-DIMMs
This it has been stable with and has been running for 5days without any problems.
However if I install into the machine 667Mhz ECC DDR2 FB-DIMMs, then the server panics approx every other day or more. I have tried running with Apple supplied RAM and Kingston (who I believe are a supplier to Apple).
I only fitted the 533Mhz RAM out of desperation to try to get the system stable and it seems to have worked.
Does anyone know if there any issues with running 667Mhz RAM in the Intel Xserves.

Is the RAM module "known good"?
At least before you handled it?
Does it do it with ALL 667s or is this the only one you've tried?
Will it pass a Memory Test when installed? Even when warm?
My $.02,
=Tod

Just purchased a new mac mini 3GHz Intel Core i7, with 16GB ram version 10.10.1. With it i purchased a new wireless keyboard. All of a sudden I was not able to use the #1 key. I thought I had a defected newly purchased keyboard. I pulled out my older wireless keyboard, and the same thing happened. It must not be the keyboard if it happened to two different keyboards. I have a habit of restarting my computer, when things don't work, I find it helps, and sure enough, everything works. Today, it happened again. Does anyone know what is causing this to happen?

    Go to crucial.com
Enter your specs, and buy as much as it'll hold. You'll be happy you did. I've been using them for years. Great company, and the best value for RAM in my opinion. And you don't want to mess with cheap RAM. It can mess EVERYTHING up...

  • IMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM

The Internet is frequently very slow.  I am hard wired to the TimeWarner Motorola cable modem, but also have a new router with 5 GHz that has a Firewire port.  Would my Internet speed increase substantially by hard wiring to the router by Firewire?
My MacBook with 4GB RAM is much faster via a wireless connection.
Thanks very much for any ideas or comments.

Unfortunately, connecting your iMac by Firewire directly to a router which then connects to the cable modem will Not increase the speed of your Interent connection relative to directly connecting your iMac to the cable modem.  Your iMac's network speed is at your ISP's delivered maximum directly through the cable modem.  All the router would add is the ability to share the cable modem's  output signal  among multiple connected computers. I believe you are experiencing the fact that the internal hardware (CPU, RAM, etc.) of your older iMac may be slower in processing the ISP's internet signal than your more powerful MacBook.
    Hope this helps:)

  • Can too much memory lead to a kernel panic on a MacBook Pro? specs 2.4GHz intel core i7 16GB DDR3 RAM   late2011..My laptop began suffering from kernel panics 3 mos ago first noticed using public wifi. Gone thru apple support all the way to engineers

Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night  attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card.  The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit.  I would describe my use as "light"  based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support  and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted  3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix  graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue  given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble.  Does that make sense?  Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge.  Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

The RAM needs specs as shown below.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

  • Intel Xserve and kernel panic on high I/O load

    Hi everyone,
Having added our 1st Intel Xserve to our server farm for test purposes we have encoutered several kernel panics on high I/O loads to Xsan volumes and standalone Xraid's.
Below is a portion of the system.log after restart.
The amusing part of this is that the crash reporter that suposed to log the reason for the crash crashed itself.
I was trying to use the new Xserve as a backup server but even with about 20% load on all 4 processors it will panic and restart.
Verdict: absolutley unreliable and useless if you need your Xserve to shuffle a lot of data around. The kernel drivers for the Apple FC card has also been changed which caused problems with our Archiware Presstore backup software.(kernel panic)
Looks like Apple is tampering with the multi core kernel of 10.4.8 on the Intel Xenon Processors at the moment and hasn't got it right yet. Well, we got one revision left to get this fixed before 10.5 comes out and that's still miles away from being usuable to say the least.
Thank you Apple, for selling your latest products that don't work as usual.
Any comments of similar experiences are welcome.

While I have found a few problems as well, I have gotten the intel xserve fairly stable (it did take a while and a lot of apple support calling)
I haven't had kernal panics, but I haven't been able to get the processors above 45% when doing compression. Also, I had some nasty lun masking problems with the fibre card which did result in corrpution of a HFS raid volume.
On the topic of xsan and the intel xserve, it is a BAD idea to try to install anything prior to 1.4.0. Had hangs, crashes and even corruption of the serial licensing daemon. Installing 1.4 and upgrading to 1.4.1 was a huge fix to those issues.
Overall, after a lot of work, it is working well, and does play back 100MB/s video extremely well off an xsan volume. Although, I would be fully content if I could get compressor's utilization of the CPU from 40 to 100%.

  • Frequent kernel panics with MPB 2.0 with 2GB RAM

I have been having frequent kernel panics with my MPB. I have 2GB of RAM that came pre-installed from the factory. This seems to happen most often when I am using external firewire drives. Has anyone out there had similar problems?

I've done the permission repairs. Also zapped the
PRAM. Ran the hardware test off the installer DVD
and it immediately came back with an error code
(4MEM/1/60000000:) and told me to contact Applecare.
I called Applecare and they were not very helpful.
The operator I spoke with had no idea what the
error code meant. He told me that RAM either works
or it doesn't. The PRAM zap was done at his
suggestion. Hasn't changed a thing. The kernel
panics have only grown more steady over the past
couple of weeks. More frustrating are frequent and
repeated application crashes (even simple stuff like
Safari, Mail, Address Book and Preview). Applecare
suggested I do a clean install of the OS. But it
sounds like a hardware issue to me. The app crashes
are occurring in different accounts on my MPB. I
don't want to spent a half-day reinstalling all of
my software only to have the issues continue. I'm
going to try to re-seat the RAM and then make an
appointment at the genius bar to have them take a
look at this. It had been running perfectly for the
    first few weeks.
If you had an error code during the Hardware Test your MBP has a problem. The 4MEM/1/60000000: maybe linked to bad RAM or not seated correctly. If not seated correctly it will not boot, so it sounds like a bad RAM slot or memory stick.

    Ahmed:
You can try visiting/searching the Expanding your Power Mac G5 forum. You'll find A LOT of help about RAM issues.
Any RAM brand must work but you maust be sure it follows the MAc specs. Some brand sites have good product locator by computer manufacturer/model (i.e. Kingston and Crucial). In fact there is no Apple branded RAM, they use a lot of different ones.
Inside FCP settings you'll find how to manage the memory that the program use, but that settings depends on the total quantity of memory you have installed, and you didn't post that information.

  • Will my MacBookPro3,1 Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz with 4GB Ram run Mountain Lion?

Hi everyone. I have a MacBookPro3,1 Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz with 4GB Ram — will it run Mountain Lion? My hard drive has 615 Gigs of free space. If so, is it worth it for me to upgrade? Will all the new features be available to me. Presently I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53). I heard that there is an update 8.1 out there with developers as of yesterday.
    Thanks.

    Hi John.
Yes, an erase and install sounds like a good idea. I just need to check my Adobe CS5 software to see if I need to upgrade the suite. If that is the case, then I may need to put it off for a bit. Thanks so much for your help.
I have a newer MacBook Pro at work, but usually wait to upgrade it, till I've been running it at home on my personal computer for a while. Would hate for it to mess up my production schedule.
Thanks again and have a good evening.

  • Does FaceTime works with an iMac 2006 ? (intel 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with 3GB ram ?

I have an IMac 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB ram.  I have an Apple ID that is working properly for many years.  When I want to activate FaceTime, it gives me an error of ID.  I have checked my ID in iTune and it is fine.  What should I do ?
    My OS is Lion 10.7.1.

It is sometimes very peculiar to observe the side effects of some systems settings, but this would be an odd 'fix' if it were to work. Aside from anything else, the energy saver settings impact the system only when it's running since they are integral to MacOS. It's difficult to imagine how these could affect the cold-booting of the machine - though it isn't impossible of course, in as far as changing the energy saving settings might impact on parameter RAM.
However, even if it were to actually resolve this, you would need to switch back to the prior settings to make sure it remained 'fixed', since you hardly want a Mac that limits your choice of any settings that should be available to you.
And while I think, it may actually be worth resetting PRAM as follows:
    -Shut down the computer.
-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in the next step but one.
    -Turn on the computer.
-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    -Release the keys.

I need to know if this will work on this Mac and or if there is any other After Effects that will work.

The display would not. However, your model does not have a discrete GPU, and the integrated (Intel 3000) would not meet CS6's requirements (any CS6 software) alone.
    However:
    Standard VRAM:
    384 MB
    Maximum VRAM:
    512 MB*
    Details:
Apple reports that "memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 384 MB". *If upgraded to 8 GB of RAM (or more), 512 MB will be reserved for video function.
In other words, you would need to upgrade your RAM to 8 GB. The VRAM (video ram) of the processor can exceed its specifications if you upgrade your memory to 8 GB. In order to run the software, you would have to upgrade your RAM first:
