Intel Xserve with Leopard Server 10.5.5 won't let me in via login

A power outage appears to have created some issues with my intel Xserve, running Leopard server 10.5.5
The System identifier light was blinking, so I booted up from the Leopard disk and found out that my mirrored internal array needed to be rebuilt. No problem, 4 hours later, I repair permissions on the mirrored internal array, everything gets "repaired". Change bootup disk to the internal 10.5.5 mirrored array and reboot. System Identifier light stopped blinking, things were looking good.
The login screen comes up and when I put in the admin username and password, the screen does the shake of the wrong login.
What's weird is, on my laptop I can use Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, and the screen sharing for the server....with the admin username and password.
So, I figure, perhaps the mirror rebuild requires me to reset the admin password. So, boot back up from the Leopard Server install DVD, run the password utility. and reset the main account password.
I change the boot drive back to the internal mirror, same thing. I'm stuck. I can't get past the login screen on the actually server....or via the screen sharing...and Server Monitor appears to be stuck at 'waiting for response'. I can, again, use Server Admin and Workgroup Manager on my laptop and make changes to the X server software....but I can't log into the X serve.
My webpage, wiki, etc....are all serving fine. But, I'd like to be able to figure out what I'm doing wrong...log back in and run super duper, etc.
Help...please...

Spent all day with apple support. They said it sounded like the LADP database was corrupted. They had me try to login as root, via an opendir account, etc. No luck.
So, they suggested I do a fresh install of the Leopard server on an external drive. Did that. They then suggested I use my laptop and the workgroup manager app to log in to the xserver, export users, groups and computers....and to copy over the library/collaboration folder to the external "clean install" of Leopard server.
Did that and followed the instructions to "relink" the metadata.plist files in each group, to the GUID to the groups in workgroup manager. First issue, they weren't different GUID strings.
Well, that didn't work...kept getting file not found error. When trying to access the domain.com/groups/groupname...it should've asked for authentication. And let me into that wiki...but no, apache error page.
So, they had me create a new "test" group....added a user. Start and stopped the web...etc. This didn't create a new wiki entry (when we replaced my custom index.html to the default index where groups/wikis/blogs populate automatically at the main). And, there's no new "test" folder in the library/collaboration files.
They then said "well, it must be because you don't have reverse DNS configured right, that's why the new wikis won't set up". I've contacted dyndns.com...but I don't think that's the problem.
So, I've rebooted my xserver to the internal drive. The wiki and blog is still there, still accessible the way I like....I still can't login to the xserver.
So, I'm wondering, if anyone knows a way I can boot up my xserve in the target drive mode, hook up my laptop and replace / swap whatever admin files so that when I boot up my xserve, I can login again.
There has to be a way to hard fix a hidden file? Replace a DB? Some awesome terminal command to get me in and fix the admin account / password....
Or, does anyone know if the reverse DNS issue applecare cites is legit? Doesn't make sense how, the same public ip and domain name, that's worked for some time...suddenly doesn't???
I'm hoping someone can help me.

  • New intel Xserve with Leopard Server setup assistance....

    Hello
Im quite a newbie when it comes to administrating OS X Server, Xserves and RAID's so please bare with me if the following question seems obvious or dumb...
Currently I have inherited the following setup - G5 Xserve running 10.4.10 Server which has the following services running = Kerio MailServer, AFP, DHCP, DNS, Firewall, NAT, OD, VPN and Windows. This Xserve is also connected to an Apple RAID via fibre channel for file sharing and also to a Tape multi-changer backup unit via scsi.
I have just bought a new Intel Xserve and have installed 10.5 Server on it. I have this server as I would like to get iCal Server and Directory up and running and eventually share some of the G5 services. For iCal Server and Directory I assume ill need the 10.5 Server set up as Open Directory Master but my worry is I have that already on my G5 Xserve. If I was to migrate the 25 usernames from there to the 10.5 Server, would every user still be able to connect to the RAID (as the RAID is still physically connected to the G5 Xserve) for file sharing?
I hope some one could advise or recommend a better way, let me know if you need me to try and clarify the question better!
    Thanks in advance

  • Intel xserve with hardware raid. Volume not mounting but drives show good

So this morning we came in and found that our intel xserve with the hardware raid is not booting.
Booted from OS X Install DVD and Raid Utility shows the Raidset good and all drives good.
Open disk utility and no volume form the raid will show up.
    ANY IDEAS!??!

    New information.
So out of the blue the Volume decided it needed to run an initializing run.
Apple care says I have to just wait until its done and see if the volume mounts.
Very strange since everything was green (good) until just then.
    UPDATE:
Next day, the initializing has finished and now the Volume says (good) but the Raid Set is now "in transition". Applecare says I have to just wait till its done and see if the volume mounts.

As long as you don't need all the bells and whistles of the iTunes Store such as Ping, and don't need to sync an iOS device running iOS 4.x, then iTunes 9.2.1 should work for you. It should be available via Software Update, but if not, you can still get it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1056
but it would be best to upgrade your Mac to Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6, since it's probable that eventually the iTunes Store will no longer support iTunes 9.x.
    Regards.
P.S. Mac OS X 10.4 was discontinued three and a half years ago, so yes, it's getting rather long in the tooth. Cheers.

three finger or two finger gesture to move back and forward between pages of file only work on safari, unlike with old os. this new lion won't let me do it. Any help?

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • Intel Xserve With Raid card Remote install Question

I am currently trying to remotely install OSX server on an Intel 2008 Xserve with a newly fitted raid card (Apple) I get as far as choosing which HD to install but none of the drives show? (there are all Apple brand 300GB SAS)
Can I only install it locally on the machine if a Raid card/SAS drives are in there??

  • File Sharing Speed with Leopard Server/ Windows XP

Went from Panther Server to Leopard Server. Panther worked fine. Leopard Server we've had a lot of problems with Windows XP clients. We run data files from the server. Using Panther the file sharing speed was comparable to putting the data file on the PC itself. When we moved to Leopard the speed went through the floor. 8 seconds on the PC and 4.5 minutes on the Server. The server is a substantially stronger machine with a lot more resources - but we've had to stop using it for it's intended purpose.
    Help?

Same problem but almost the reverse. 10.5.2 server, windows clients file browsing, opening and saving speed is great, but our 4 iMac clients (Leopard also) really, really slow to generate thumbnail views of files and open them. Happens across several shares, seems to be a problem with AFP, although now after disabling AFP on some of the shares, it is happening on SMB as well. I have read several other discussions on this forum that attempt to deal with AFP performance issues, but none provide a real solution. Now that it is also happening with the SMB protocol as well I am getting a bit concerned.
Any advice or even a link to more info would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sftp problem with Leopard Server

    Hey guys,
The problem I'm having is that I can't get an application to connect to my Leopard Server via sftp. I can bring up a terminal and sftp that way, so I'm not sure why I can't get the app to get in over sftp. I can actually connect successfully with the app over ftp, just not sftp. Anyone know of a reason for this? Thanks for the help.

I suggest you ask in the Server forum.

  • Is Homebrew compatible with Leopard Server?

Title pretty much sums it up. I need to install ImageMagick and some other UNIXy tools. Wondering if Homebrew will work with our Leopard Server (10.5.8)? And if so are there any things to be aware of?
Server is currently running Apache, MySQL, and a host of other OS X Server processes.

It's just like any other package manager.
For the most part, the stuff it installs is outside of the realm of what Apple installs, so anything you install via Homebrew will work just as it would - just don't expect the Apple tools to integrate with it.
That also holds true if your're trying to install tools that somehow interact with Apache - the standard Apple install likely won't see the Homebrew-installed tools, so you may have to play games with Apache, or install the Homebrew version of Apache to work with it (and break the links to Server Admin, of course).
So, short answer - will it 'work'? yes - in as much as you can install Homebrew app and tools. Will it integrate with your existing services? probably not, at least not without some extra work.

  • Using PowerPC G4 with Leopard Server.

    Hi All,
I have a PowerMac (QuickSilver) G4 collecting dust and would like to put it to good use.
I would like to have "host" a web server and run FTP's and being able to access it from anywhere there's browser....
Now, I understand I could just install Leopard on my G4 and use the built-in webserver and install mySQL on it. But I wonder whether installing Mac OSX Server (albeit Leopard Server being a powerpc) would have any benefits for me.
    Cheers
    G

    Hi
As long as the proposed hardware meets Leopard Server's minimum requirements you should be OK to install it:
    • An Intel processor or PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor
    • At least 1GB of RAM. I would go for 2GB as a Minimum or as much as you can install
    • At least 20GB of disk space available
    • An active connection to a secure Ethernet network
Be aware if you've installed a 3rd-Party Processor Upgrade you'll have to consult the manufacturer's website if OSX Leopard Server is supported.
How well it performs after that will depend largely on the choices you make post install phase. Regardless of what choice you make and to make this absolutely clear, as well as emphasising this as much as I can, you will need a correctly working and configured DNS Service. Without it and regardless of whatever else you want from this Server nothing will work well if at all.
If you really must have FTP I would consider securing it otherwise consider finding some other means of remote access. A VPN would be a wise choice.
    HTH?

  • Very Slow Internet Connection with Leopard Server

I have build a new Leopard Server on a Dual G4 867 box, 1.38GB RAM, 10M external Ethernet Card on WAN side into ADSL router on 2Mbit/s connection where we have an 8 IP address range, nothing else contending for the bandwidth.
When I down load a file using my Leopard client directly on one of our external WAN IP ports, I get maximum throughput from the links of the order of 200kBytes/sec. When I use the same client working through the Leopard Server, which is acting as a NAT firewall router, I get throughputs of less than 1/20th of that, e.g. 10kBytes/sec or less.
I monitored the Leopard Server and it is under utilised in terms of CPU, RAM, disk I/O, port thruput, etc. I have also checked Activity Monitor and the whole machine is barely idling on resource usage, yet the throughput is abysmal.
Can anyone give me any clues as to why this might be? Any thoughts on what else to check?

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=6&PFid=6&Le vel=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
They don't seem to have a 10.5 driver listed but Apple may have included one in Leopard (as in previous Tiger and Panther). You just "plunked" the card in?
It does seem Apple has done some major overhaul when it comes to (ethernet) drivers as they now supports flow-control also at 10/100 Mbit. You have the interface (duplex) set to autonegotiate?
Also my older Belkin (Broadcomm chip) "AirPort" PCI card only seems to be "semi supported" under Leopard as it is now reported as thirdparty but under Tiger it was udistingushable from a regular AirPort Extreme card.
Maybe an update will fix this?
Having said that the Realtek based cards isn't really know as the best working/quality ones.
I have some older 10/100 Asanté cards laying around and a cheap Realtek 8169 (gigabit) based card I havent tried yet.
I also noticed a soon two year old Intel iMac I got recently has a Marvell based ethernet interface so maybe other Marvell based cards would work in Macs (haven't really looked at what's present in Leopard driver wise). Marvell seems to get good reviews on Internet (SysKonnect cards). This iMac for example supports Jumbo frames and VLAN.

  • Accessing Xserve with Lion Server from Windows 7 PC via VNC Viewer

    Hello everyone-
At work we have an Xserve running Lion Server that we are trying to access from a Windows PC runnig Windows 7. We have turned on Screen Sharing on the Xserve and we are using RealVNC's VNC Viewer client to access the Xserve.
Everything works OK except the Control key is not being passed through to the Xserve, so you can't to teh usual copy/paste commands etc.
I have checked on the Web but found nothing to resolve this problem. The settings in the RealVNC client are set to pass through special keys, but it is as if the VNC server on the Xserve isn't seeing them.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • How update my hardware with Leopard Server 10.5

    Hello,
I have a older G4 1.25Ghz DP running Mac OS X Server 10.5 (10 Cli.) and doing his work fine... AFP, FTP, DNS, Open Directory & LDAP, iCal, Software Update, and Web services running ok.
Now I have a faster new Mac Pro and I want to replace my older G4, I think will be a procedure to migrate all my configurations in Apple way, sure ... It´s this possible?
I will apreciate very much your help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Felix

Unfortunately, Apple says there is no way to do this. According to them, the preferences and configurations, while on the surface are identical, somethings are different between PPC and x86 and cannot cross over. This holds true for Co-located Fail-Over Setups as well. I can believe that this is true as it is conceivable that some tings would not get 'upgraded' during the installation/upgrade and so there could be ppc code trying to run on an intel machine and making quite the mess to figure out what works and what does not...
Now having said that, when I go to an Intel setup, I will be doing the following: Mirror my current G5 system disk to the new macPro/xserve disk, and booting from DVD and trying to upgrade it. We here have nothing to lose and if it does not work/work well, I have to install fresh anyhow so it is only lost time, not lost data.

  • Publishing podcasts with Leopard Server

I like how the Leopard Blog tool allows me to quickly and easily publish a podcast series and hides the process of creating the RSS feed from my low tech users. However, I do not see a GUI provided for managing the Podcast Series description, only the episode title and description. Once I subscribe to a podcast in iTunes the default series description is
"This is a podcast for Users/<user name>. If I submit the users podcast series to iTunes, this unhelpful description will be visible to subscribers. Is there a way with the current GUI to change this description? if not, it seems I'll have to edit the rss feed for every user after every new episode published?

Now I have discovered, the RSS feed is not in a location I can find. When I check the url for the subscribe in itunes, I get:
    itpc://domian/username/blog/index.its
This URL does not help me find the index.its file which I would like to manually edit to add a podcast description. Any idea how to find it?
