Intention of JSF (web applications or web sites?)

Hi,
I want to write a web application that has a similar look and feel to todays desktop applications. Thus I don't need a typical web site look (title on the top, navigation bar etc.) but a more desktop look (a menu bar on the top, a status bar on the bottom etc.)
Although I like JSF I am not sure, if this framework is the best for this job. Thus I wanted to ask, if you can tell me the intention of JSF:
Is it to build web sites or is it also to build web applications without the typical web site look and feel? With JSF both is possible of course. And with the adequat JavaScript library on the client side it looks very nice (e.g. ExtJS).
But was this one of the intentions of JSF? Or was it primarily to build usual web sites with a page flow etc.? And maybe another framework is better for what I am going to do?
I only don't want to use a JSF for something it has not been made for.
Greetings
Mike

I don't see what the point is in making a distinction between web sites and web apps. Are you trying highlight the difference between say Apache vs. JBoss?I'm not sure what you mean by "the difference between say Apache vs. JBoss" but here's what I meant. When I think a web site, I think of a site where the interaction tends to be more reading, clicking from page to the next, etc., like, for example a news site. With a web app, I tend to think of statefulness, business processes, etc, like an online accounting system, content management system, etc. The distinction is probably pretty academic, though...
Well you need to decide if you're making a simple web site that serves static content or i fyou're making an application with a GUI. There's a big difference.Exactly.
For a desktop-like application, I say web browsers in general are a bad choice. I'd use Web Start if possible and write a GUI. In any case, Hehe. That's a completely different (though very valid argument(
AJAX is the last thing I'd use (now you're writing HTML, XML, AJAX, Java, etc..). Echo2 provides 1 single API rather than hacking several. Flex, while I haven't used much, seems to also provide a much cleaner solution. Fair enough, and that's not an uncommon opinion. I'm probably somewhere in the middle, but, for what I've been asked to do since the web 2.0 hype started, Ajax has been sufficient. I'm not Echo2 expert, but isn't that just an HTML/JS interface with a Java backend with Ajaxy operations? For really, really complex and dynamic UIs Flex (or JavaFX :) might be more appropriate.
Again, I haven't used JSF so I can't say much about it. But I see lots of projects all the time and JSF seems to be slow for adoption so far. Just my personal experience.Hmm. I've used it for about three years now, fwiw, and really, really like it. Which probably isn't worth much. I will admit, though, that JSF isn't always the right tool (thus the discussion here). As far as adoption goes, it seems to be growing much faster than the other frameworks out there, but I may have tinted glasses... ;)

  • Web Application to Web Service Scenario

    Hi All.
    The following is the scenario:

    Adapters To be used:
    Sender Adapter: HTTP
    Receiver Adapter: SOAP
    Query:
    1. What will be the TS type in the SLD? Standalone Java or WebAS Java? Or, do we need SLD entries at all?
    Thanks,

    Banik,
You need SLD entries. You can have one third party business system for both of them also. It also depends upon the clients requirements and naming standards.

  • Web application and web.xml

i have a web application consisting of 1 servlet and 5 jsps.
the start point would be index.jsp
i use firmwide login page. after login, i want the browser to display index.jsp page.
    In web.xml, i have defined -
    <welcome-file-list>          <welcome-file>/jsp/index.jsp</welcome-file>     </welcome-file-list>       <servlet>        <servlet-name>UtilitiesServlet</servlet-name>        <servlet-class>com.gs.fw.sox404.utilities.UtilitiesServlet</servlet-class>             <init-param>             <param-name>util-log4j-init-file</param-name>             <param-value>/WEB-INF/classes/util_log4j.properties</param-value>          </init-param>        <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>    </servlet>     <servlet-mapping>        <servlet-name>UtilitiesServlet</servlet-name>        <url-pattern>/UtilitiesServlet</url-pattern>    </servlet-mapping>if i define it as just index.jsp in the welcome file list, after successful login, it displays the dir structure of the web app.
if i define it as jsp/index.jsp, then in some of the pages, it tries to find the servlet inside jsp folder.
What would be the best way to get around this?

Well, yes, it's not able to find it because you've not understood the mechanism of how it works clearly. You have to put your welcome file under every directory you want it to be used from. Like I said, it's not a path, it's a filename. So if the container sees that your request URL is for a directory, it'll look for the welcome files from the welcome file list, one by one, in the order of declaration. Whichever one it finds first, it'll serve that. If it doesn't find any, then it'll either give a 404 or a directory listing depending on the server and it's settings.
So your problem is that you've put your index.jsp in your JSP folder but expect it to be served for all URLs. That won't happen, you'll have to put one file named index.jsp into every directory. The reasoning is pretty simple, what if you want different behaviour for each folder?
This should fix your problem :)

  • MBAM 2.5 Web Applications installation - "Web service application pool account is not valid"

    Hi,
I've created a Server 2012R2 installation to install MBAM 2.5. When installing the Web Applications I keep getting "The web service application pool account is not valid".
The account I am using is a standard domain account with admin rights on the Server and I've also set the SPN (both netbios and FQDN) and Delegation.
This account is also a member of the group that is defined as RW of the SQL databases (which were setup without any problem and are on a separate  Server 2008R2, SQL 2008R2 installation.
I am also getting an error with the SSRS URL , stating "SQL Server Reporting Services URL that points to the MBAM reports is not valid", despite being able to browse to the http://[FQDN]/ReportServer_MBAM location.
    Thanks.

I got this kind of error when I revert back my virtual machine a lot to my previous checkpoints. I hope this can't be an issue for you.
Make sure the application pool account must have the following login roles on the SQL server and have following rights on the reporting instance:-
    Required SQL Server permissions
The user responsible for installing MBAM database and reporting feature must have the local administrator privileges and the following log in permission:-
SQL Server instance login server roles:
    dbcreator
    processadmin
SQL Server Reporting Services instance rights:
    Create Folder
    Publish Reports
SQL Server Database Engine Services: SQL Server Database Engine Services must be installed and running during MBAM Server installation.
SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS): SSRS must be installed and running during the MBAM Server installation. Configure SSRS in "native" mode and not in "SharePoint" mode.

  • WEB application designer - Web items - How to create new

    Hi!
Is there a way to create new web item in web application designer, and <b>NOT</b> a copy of existing with different parameters (Web items located under Standard tab).
It would expand possibilities of web app. designer a lot!
Another question is, how to use BSP elements in BEX WEB reports (templates). Is this possible or not?
    Thank you in advance!
    Egi

    Hi,
in principal you can write new web items but this is not supported by SAP as this is a modification.
You would inherit from a standard web item class (for example CL_RSR_WWW_ITEM_VIEW) and maintain tables rsrrenderer rsrrendereratr rsrrenderert and optionally rsrrendererdep
BSP itself can not be used, unless you include a BSP Application via Iframes in your Web template.

Either the login information is not correct (it explains it should not be domain\username but just username) or the authentication format from your Microsoft proxy server (Kerberos?) is not compatible with the Web Clipping portlet. You might get a better reply in the Portal forum about supported proxy authentication methods for the WebClipping portlet.

  • Web application and site collection not accessibe

I have created a web application and a site collection. But when I tried to access the site by browser on the server the page cannot be displayed or the server cannot be found. What should I configure? Please say by detailed steps.

I created a host header extranet.xxx.xx and alternate access mapping is ok. But still I'm not able to access the site by http://server name:port no. It gives The web page cannot be found or this web page can't be displayed.
Now when I try with Firefox with http://server name:port no, it gives
    "Bad request - Invalid hostname
HTTP Error 400. The hostname is invalid."
More: if I go to Alternate Access Mappings > Add Internal URL:s > Save is grayed out.
    You have two options,
Option 1 : Accessing the web application without any host header name and  with the port no you have created.  (ex: (http://server1:5500 )
Option 2. Accessing it with the host header name (ex:http://mywebapp.contoso.com)  you have created for which you need to create a DNS and set an AAM accordingly in the corresponding zone.
For the option no 1. you need to have a host header in IIS which would be created by default while you create a web application and it should be like this unless you did nit change it. http (Type)---blank host name--All Unassigned in the IP section---and
the port no in which you have created.
PS : If you have one more IP address in the server, its good to set the same IP address which is set for server for the name resolution to happen properly.
If you have n't specified the hostheader while creating the web application, then you need to add it manually with the existing one which is there for option no 1. It should be added as below. http---Mywebapp.contoso.com--IP address in which you have created
    the DNS and Port 80.
If AAM save is grayed out, check it from some other browser. Also Hostname invalid clearly implies that there is some problem with the name resolution. Check whether you could ping the webapplication from the server where you are trying to access it.

  • How can I create a host name site collection when I have a 443 web application already created for App model?

    Hi all,
I have a 2013 farm set up with the App model
1 web application for path based site collection using host name
1 web application with SSL (no host name)
    1 web application for mysite
My business request is that  I need to migrate SSL enabled 2007 content to this farm and use host name site collections.  I tried to create one more web application for this without any luck (the 443 IIS folder is already used by another web application).
I thought I bind the previous 443 web application with another IP address should be fine.  Seems like the IIS site is taken (https://server name:443) so it will not let me create one more.  How can I solve this problem so I can create the web application
to host those host name site collections?  Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sally

    Hi Trevor,
Thanks again for your quick reply.  I try the option 2 right after your post.  I use my front end server name for public URL (https://WFEName:443) and it fails again.  The error message is:
The directory C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\443 is already being used by another IIS Web Site.  Choose a different root directory for your new Web application.
After reading more, I saw mix Hosted Name Site collection and Path-based site collection aren't recommended.  Unfortunately I already have Path-based site collection created with App model web application
(the web application without host name) in my farm.  In my Option 2, that web application without host name is used for App routing.  This takes the root folder 443 which will not allow any other web application to use the same name again.
Does that mean we can't create Host Named Site collection in the same farm?  Is there any configuration I need to check?
    Thanks again.

Hi! I would like to ask for someone's help on a problem I encountered while accessing a web app deployed to oc4j in Unix. Before deploying the application in Unix, I tried it on a Windows2000 server and it worked fine. I copied the same files (classes, jsps, js, css) to the Unix server and modified the same xml files (data-sources, global-web-application, http-web-site, server). • Web Application - Data caching of enterprise data

Sorry in advance if this is off-topic but I can't find anywhere else to post this type of question.
I am looking for information/suggestions such as books, technology or design methodology for my enterprise web applications. These sites are currently up and functional using only JSP, servlets and regular Java classes stored in a web application session to provide data caching and access. We are using Weblogic Server 6.1 running on an AIX Unix system at this time. I'm not sure that this is the best design architecture as our web sessions are getting too large but I can't think of any other Java technology to use and I need some help. Here's an overview of our environment and our needs.
Our core data is held in a mainframe based IMS system. Some DB2 is also used. Access to this data is through IMS COBOL transactions which we can execute with IMS Connect. We also use some JDBC to get to the DB2 tables directly where available.
Some overall application data is cached when the web application is deployed. We use singleton classes which are created and refreshed at deployment and they then refresh themselves from the sources every 24 hours.
Each time a user logs in we execute several IMS transactions and JDBC calls to cache user specific data in regular Java classes which are then simply placed in the users web session where we access them from JSP, servlets and other Java classes. The fields in these Java classes range from any type of primitive field to TreeMaps of other Java classes. As the data is cached it is sorted and other fields are calculated and stored in these classes. As the user progresses through the system we then may have to do several other IMS transaction and JDBC calls to collect other types of data. All of this is then also added to the users session. Most of this in inquiry. We do allow transactions but those are built from user input and data already cached and are then we just execute the IMS transactions with the input.
As our application has grown these Java classes have gotten larger and larger. And since these are simply stored in server memory in the web sessions then these are also getting huge. I'm concerned that this is not the best way for this application to be architected. Is there something else we should be doign? I simply don't understand how Entity Java Beans could be used but then again I don't know much about them. I wouldn't think that caching the data to a local database and accessing it from there would be any more efficient and would probably just slow down the system from all the I/O.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

The best book you can buy is 'Professional Java Server Programming, j2ee edition' by Wrox. It is by far the best reference I've used. Another quick reference consideration might be the j2ee book provided by codenotes... its quick and to the point.
