Inter-device sharing

I didn't see a thread for iOS, so decided to post here. I made this suggestion to Apple earlier http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and believe it to have some merit. If anyone else believes this would be beneficial, maybe copying and pasting it into the feedback site above will give a better chance of making it happen (I posted it under iPhone, but any mobile device should do fine).
*+"I believe all Apple mobile product owners would benefit greatly if the next upgrade for iOS included a feature for inter-device sharing. This would allow for the iPad/iPhone/iPod to access audio/video/pics from other Apple mobile devices. This would eliminate A LOT of redundancy in what's stored on each device, allowing for more of certain types of media to be stored to specific devices. I own both the iPad and iPhone4 and tend to prefer movie viewing on iPad for obvious reasons, whereas music is more convenient on the iPhone because no viewing is required (driving/shopping) and thus no need for such a large screen."+*

There are also licensing issues with commercial content involved, and while some people would share only that content they created themselves, many people would want to use such a feature to share commercial, copyrighted content, and that's something the content owners do not want to allow facilitation of (that's one reason why you can't natively sync content other than that purchased from the iTunes Store from an iOS device back to iTunes).
But perhaps in future updates Apple will find a way to make this happen.

  • Change Apple ID on one device only. Currently have multiple devices sharing the same apple id.

    Hi
I currently have three devices sharing one Apple ID. Ipad (Work) Iphone (Wife) & Ipod Touch (Son)
I have purchased an iPhone for Christmas and want to migrate the ipod to a new Apple ID. I haven't created the an ID for the phone yet but just wondered what the easiest solution would be? Would it be a case of creating a new ID on the phone, then signing into the iPod with this ID. I understand whatever has been downloaded to the Ipod will no longer be available, but wondered if there were any solutions to this problem.

You can have media from more than one account on an iOS device. Note that
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.
I would set up the iPhone by:
iOS: Transferring information from your current iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device
Then on the iPod yocan either erase it and set it with the new ID or:
Use the new ID on iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
and Settings>iCloud if you want to have separate Contacts Calendar and some other things.
Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases if you want to

  • I have 5 iOS devices sharing apps from 1 appstore account

    Hi,
I wanna know if is possible to delete a device on my appstore account, because i have 5 devices sharing apps from the same account and i wanna buy another device and use the same account... I know the limit (5 devices) and i wanna delete 1 device. Could be possible?

if they all use the same appleID then yes
but it will also mean that all sms's go to all devices
and facetime between them will not work

  • ICloud with multiple devices sharing 1 itunes PC

We have a number of apple devices, some ipod nanos, 3 ipod touches, and an iphone. All share itunes on one PC for music, videos, apps etc.
The ipods and iphone now have the iCloud option from IOS5. I get the general idea of iCloud sharing the info of one user across multiple devices. How does it work the other way, when there are multiple users that may want some parts kept private, such as photos, facebook etc?
Each device has quite a few Gb of backup on the PC, will that alone kill iCloud? There is about 10 to 40Gb on the devices, mostly different apps and music on them.
Should it be viewed as one iCloud account per user? Is that possible from one itunes on the PC?
I dread switching it on and finding my family have now had all their devices merged and ready to do unspeakable things to me (they take angry birds very seriously).

A single account would mean you all shared the same calendars, contacts, Photo Stream and email, but they can all be turned off individually, iTunes and the app store are separate accounts but it sounds as though you already have a single account for those any way, but again you can turn off automatic downloads and have each device sync different music and apps if you wish. It won't affect Facebook in any way.
If you have seperate iCloud accounts you would ideally need different user accounts on the PC.

  • 2 devices sharing 1 library

I have my iPod touch 3 for some time and in March I bought an iPhone 4. Originally I added a separate library for the phone, both sharing the same iTunes account. I use the shift key when booting iTunes to switch between libraries. Now, I'd like to use just one library and manually manage the content for each device. The reason I'd like to delete the iPhone library and use just one is that having two libraries seems to defeat the convenience of the new Wi-Fi sync feature in iTunes.  I need to have my PC on and iTunes open to the device specific library in order to sync. I've also discovered I have to disable the Wi-Fi on the device I'm not syncing. If I don't, iTunes either crashes or sends error message saying it can't find the device or that it's seeing 2 devices and doesn't know what to do. At that point, I might as well just connect my USB and sync the "old" way.  Any suggestions on how to use just one library so I can delete the other one? Or perhaps suggestions on Wi-Fi syncing?  Thanks in advance!!

    Hi Rictus,
SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • Two iPod touch devices sharing an Apple ID. Can I create a new ID for one of them, and will I lose everything if I do?

My three young sons pooled their money and bought an iPod touch a few years ago. The oldest decided he wanted his own. We bought him one for Christmas last year, and I set it up using the same Apple ID. My oldest son downloaded some games but soon found whenever his brothers played the same games, the progress and changes were transferred to his device and vice versa. Is there a way to create a new Apple ID for the old device? If I am able to do that, will the younger kids lose all their pictures and videos? I am not concerned about them losing games or music. They have very little paid content on their iPod, but the older one has hit the age where he wants to start downloading music and better apps. Thank you for any help!!

It the devices have iOS 8 then use Family Sharing
    http://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/family-sharing/
Family Sharing and Apple IDs for kids - Apple Support
Not that yo have to be at least 13 for a regular ID
Changing the ID does not erase any Data from the device
    CHANGE ID
The ID is used in the following locations and you  have to change them.
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter
    Settings>iCloud
    and Settings>iTunes and App store
You  have to sign out of ID (for iCloud you delete the iCloud account from the iPod) and sign in with other ID.
Note the following are resolved if you  use Family Sharing (iOS 8 and later):
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.
If the iPod has iOS 7 or later then you have the enter the password for Apple ID presently sign in Settings>iCloud.
Also, a Restriction can be set (Settings>General>Restrictions) the prevents changing accounts

  • I have 6 devices sharing the same apple id and password. when we download an app, for example a game, it backs up on all devise. therefore we can't run individual games. suggestion? thanks.

we have 6 devises sharing the same apple id and password. when we download a game app it will backup on all devices. therefore we can not run individual unconnected versions of the game. suggestions. thanks.

What do yo mean by: " it will backup on all devices"?
If you mean that is one persone purchases an app it appears on all device then on each device go to Settings>Store and turn off automatic downloads.

  • 'Device sharing same IP address as your computer' - what does this mean?

I purchased an Airport Express yesterday and was having connection problems after setting it up to only join my existing network (to play wireless audio to speakers in the kitchen) - I seem to have solved the issue by switching off WPS on my base station (provided by my ISP)
My question is: after making this change to the settings, I got a message saying 'this device' (presumably meaning the Airport Express) was now sharing the same IP address as my MacBook Pro.
What does this mean, and will there be any detrimental effects?

Thanks BTF. Presumably only my MacBook Pro and the Apple TV are connected to the internet as the Airport Express is only set up to join the existing network with the crappy router as the base station. Neither the ATV or AE have static IPs assigned.
I have since restarted my MacBook Pro and at present have Airplay audio streaming to the AE and video to the ATV simultaneously without any (at the moment) problems.

  • How can I find the file of my Apple Device shared project?

I'm not sure if this a Final Cut Pro question or an iTunes question...
I shared a project from Final Cut Pro to the Apple Devices (so that I could watch the video on my Apple TV).  I found the video in Home Movies in iTunes, and actually watched it successfully through Apple TV.
But a day or two later, when I look for the video again in Home Movies in iTunes , I get this message: "The video [video title] could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
    Yes I would.
But I don't know where to look in Finder to find it?  Does anyone know where these video files actually go when we share them?  (Is this one of those cases where it's a hidden file, and I need to unhide them to see them?  If so, how do I do that?)

    The step by step process...
When my project is ready to go,
    1. I select File>Share>Apple Devices 1080p
    2. That opens an Apple Devices 1080p pop-up window
    3. I use the default setting (which says it adding to playlist "Library"
    4. after a few minutes I receive a notification of "share successful)
    5. I open itunes, and can watch the newly shared video on my computer screen (my other videos are listed too, but if I try to watch them I get the message "The video [video name] could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?")
    6. I find the video on Apple TV by going to my computer, my library, Home Movies
    7. I watch the video on Apple TV (some of the old videos are listed, others aren't)
    8. Soon thereafter, I return to iTunes on my computer, and now, when I try to watch the newly-shared video, I get the same error message I documented above.
    9. I return to the Apple TV and now I get an error message when I try to watch the video
    This is iTunes 11.1.0.50
    and FCP 10.1.4
Also, I'm editing videos with an external drive as my video source.  I don't know if that has anything to do with anything.
Also, also, per your suggestion, I looked at the Library icon>Show Package Contents>Project Name>Shared Items but couldn't find any of the video files that disappeared.  But I did run a quick test to watch all my steps, and I COULD find the file of that latest video.  So now I  know where to look.  That said, I'm going to leave the latest test video there, and see if it disappears soon too.

  • How to change device sharing name?

Before you ask, I'm not asking how to change the name of my phone. My issue is that when I'm using an app like Chrome on my phone, in the "other devices" tab on my computer, it shows a name that is sort of related to my phone but isn't exactly what it's called in the settings>general>about thing. Also, before you ask, it's not just Chrome, and I shouldn't go on google forums. It's also the name of my phone when someone is trying to airdrop me something and I'm not in their contacts. I believe it has something to do with the "sharing name" of my phone. I know how to change this specifically on Mac, but not on my phone. Is there even a way to?

    nevermind it just fixed itself

  • Is there a recovery way if the device did not have icloud but another device shared an itune account

Our daughter's ipod touch was stolen at school.  We did not have icloud app on that device but our other daughter has
a matching ipod touch....both shared an itunes account.  Is there anything that we can do to locate the stolen ipod?  or

I don't think there is anything you can do unfortunately. Sorry.

  • Device sharing (printer, hard drive) with MiFi 2200?

Is it possible to setup network shares using the MiFi 2200 using Windows XP Pro SP3?  I've shared devices through a wired network before, but cannot seem to get it to work through the MiFi device.
The following thread makes me think I need a dedicated router for this to work -
    http://community.vzw.com/vzw/board/message?board.id=Broadband_Netbook_MiFi_Devices_tmp&message.id=4159#M4159
    Thank you.

Unfortunately this function is not available on this device. It is strictly for internet access rather than sharing network settings like on a printer. You will need a different type of network sharing system for this option. Hope this helps.

  • Can i have two devices sharing one itunes account

i currently have my iphone synced with my itunes account, i have just bought a ipod and want it to share the same itunes account, library etc, how do i do this without wiping it off my phone when ading the new ipod ??

This won't be a problem, iTunes will see the new device as a separate device, it will have its own settings under iTunes, you can set it up to sync the same content or different content to the first device, it will have no effect on how the first device syncs with iTunes.

  • How to set up imessages on 3 devices sharing the same apple id?

i have an ipod and iphone and an ipad.  i have one apple id for all of them.  when i did the ios 5 update it asked me for my apple id to set up icloud, thus being the same for all.
however i have encountered a problem.  when trying to set up imessages by default it uses my apple id email address. so all my devices is trying to use the SAME email address for imessages.  thats not goint to work because it will be messageing itself! HELP! it doesnt give you the option to change email addresses so what do i do???? how do i set up 3 completely different imessage accounts and still beable to sync between devices??

Facetime only works with two devices at a time. You can have the same Apple ID, but the two devices can't have the same email address. Get a new gmail account. Normally you use wifi for connection, however, with iOS 6 and an iPad 3 you can use cellular.

  • How to control explicit language downloads for multiple devices sharing one user id?

I set the parental controls for iTunes on my primary Mac under my account with my user id, etc.  My kids have their own devices but we all share the same user id for making purchases.  I had erroneously assumed that if I set the parental controls on my device, that it would apply to all purchases using the same id.  How can I make the parental controls universal?
