Interactive chart in report and PDF printing

Dear all
is it possible to generate a chart (via an interactive report) and save that chart in PDF format? At the moment when I try and do this in my application I just get the raw data saved as PDF, not the actual chart.
Many thanks
Paul

Hello,
If you want to have charts in your report, the best
way I know of is by using BI Publisher Desktop to
create your rtf with a chart, upload it to your
report layouts and call a report query with that
report layout.
Marc Sewtz did a nice post about it:
http://marcsewtz.blogspot.com/2007/04/one-question-tha
t-is-often-asked-about.html
or you can check my blog for the bi publisher
configuration.

Hi Dimitri
unfortunately we dont have BI Publisher Desktop (as I think you have to pay extra for this :) ).
I take it that there is no freeware (or other way) to allow us to save the chart in PDF format?

  • Differences between PDF (Interactive) and PDF (Print)

What are the main differences between PDF (Interactive) and PDF (Print)?
Now it seems to me that PDF (Interactive) is limited version of PDF (Print).
Any links to read about this topic?
    Thank you in advance,
    Mykolas

There's actually quite a few differences between (Interactive) and (Print).
Here's a list of pointers written by Michael Ninness (previous product manager of InDesign and now working at Lynda.com) http://www.lynda.com/michaelninness
I just got premission from him to post this (Thanks Michael!):
Here is some info for you regarding what choices are being made under the hood when you choose File > Export > Adobe PDF (Interactive).
Things that just happen or are included, with no choice in the dialog box:
Hyperlinks, Bookmarks, Fast Web view, Compress Text and Line Art, Crop Image Data to Frames.
Things that are not included, with no choice in the dialog box:
Visible Guides/Grids, Hidden and Non-Printing Layers, Hidden and Non-Printing Objects, Marks & Bleeds, No Ink Manager or Simulate Overprint options.
    Things that you can choose:
Security Settings, Embed Page Thumbnails, Create Tagged PDF, Create Acrobat Layers, Initial View, Initial Layout, Open in Full Screen Mode, Page Transitions, Image compression and resolution.
    Other:
    Fonts: Subset 100%
    Color Conversion: Destination
    Destination: sRGB
Profile Inclusion Policy: Include Destination Profile
    Transparency Flattener: No Flattening
And lastly, Compatibility is set to Acrobat 9 (PDF 1.7). This last point is important, and largely explains the main reason we split Interactive PDF out as a separate export choice from Print PDF. When you export an interactive PDF from CS5, included media is now written out to the Rich Media Annotation Layer, which means this content is played back via the embedded Flash Player within Acrobat Pro 9 or Adobe Reader 9 or higher. In previous versions, this content was written out to the Screen Annotation Layer, which meant this content was played back via QuickTime. This has been a long-standing headache for end users as playback across platforms was often inconsistent, would frequently break when Apple updated QuickTime, etc.
Lastly, if you want to include rich media in your interactive PDFs (SWFs, audio and video), the only formats supported if you want to target Adobe PDF (Interactive) are MP3 for audio and FLV for video. Other file formats will need to be converted to these formats before you export to Interactive PDF. For video files, you’ll be able to convert to FLV with Adobe Media Encoder. For audio files, you can use any number for free audio conversion tools, including iTunes.

  • Bug Report: Static LOV's and PDF Printing with Tabular Forms

I have a tabular form, which acts as an editable report. Some columns are 'Standard Report Column' and some are Select Lists, using Static LOV's with the contents of
Yes;Y,No;NThe purpose of the page is to allow users to edit yes/no attributes of a row. Then, they can print the report.
To make the current sort of the report reflect what is being printed to PDF, I've used a Report Layout associated with the report region, as oposed to a report query. A report query in this case would not reflect the sort of the report (all columns are sortable asc/desc).
Anyway, I link my report with the layout created, and go to run it. I get this message.
    ORA-06550: line 1, column 50: PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "," when expecting one of the following: := . ( @ % ; The symbol ":= was inserted before "," to continue.
Error      ERR-1000 Unable to determine LOV from "declare function x return varchar2 is begin Yes;Y,No;N return null; end; begin wwv_flow_utilities.g_query := x; end;".
    OK
    report error:
ORA-20001: Error fetching column value: ORA-01403: no data foundI'm guessing the product is trying to take my static LOV and place it in a function to be able to generate which value is being displayed as text, from the select lists. However, it doesn't work.
I've been able to get around it - by adding a YES_NO domain to my domain_codes table (a table which associates abreviations with full meanings), I can set by select lists to be query based select lists using the SQL select code_meaning, code from domain_codes where domain = 'YES_NO_CODE'. This still allows the user to dropdown Yes/No fields, and the PDF printing doesn't break.
It is just me, or can't the PDF printing handle static LOV's in tabular forms/reports?

    Hi Patrick.
I've tried STATIC:Yes;Y,No;Nwhile stating it is a Select List (static LOV). The values that are rendered on the page are
    [STATIC:Yes]
    [No        ]
----------I tried the same thing with STATIC2 instead of STATIC, and the same thing happened.
It also broke if I tried STATIC or STATIC2 under Select List (query based LOV). This is within a report where there is no hyperlink to say 'Create/Edit static list' or 'Create Dynamic List', as there is under select list items.
However, I am finding that for some reason, the values being sent to the PDF are not the values in the database (Y/N), but the showing values (Yes/No). This happens when I use the domain_code select query as the query based LOV.
Furthermore, I cannot get any columns not rendering on the page to be generated in the PDF. I have a column that groups items depending on values, and I want this grouping to display in the PDF instead on the original value, ideally.
    Cheers,
    K.

  • Paper Design Printing and PDF printing problem

I'm using Report Builder 9.0.2.0.3 to create a report that I create a frame , in the frame i cut and pasted text by clicking on the A then pasting the text into it.
I then created a frame with that was at the next level in the object manger with a hyperlink in it. This fame was at the level where the text was that I pasted in the paragraph above. I placed it in the PaperLayout where I wanted it and ran the paper report and it look just fine in the PaperDesign Layout and all so when I create the PDF format and the link works in PDF. But when I print the paperlayout the link prints down a few lines on the page. When I print it through the PDF browser, it prints ok, only the paperlaout has a problems. I pasted the whole page of text before I placed the link where I wanted it.
Is there something else I can try? Appreciate any suggestions or explain, why it moves.
I even got the link to be the color blue.

If I understand the question correctly, you have a static boilerplate text which has some paragraphs. To add hyperlink to some part of the text(not the whole text object), you are placing a frame on top of that particular line of text.
    When you Run to Previewer
(or File->Preview Format->PDF/HTMLCSS/..), Report uses screen surface for Fonts and you see it correctly.
However, when you print it from Reports or do File->Generate to File->PDF/HTMLCSS/.., Reports uses the default printer's Fonts for formatting. This means that there could be a slight difference in how the text is formatted in the output as the font metrics for the text might be different. The frame containing the hyperlink might be in the same place where it was placed, however the text might have formatted differently. The text which was overlapping with the frame might have formatted little above or below the frame.
To solve this, instead of using separate frame for hyperlinking texts, you can divide your text and create separate boilerplate text objects for the text which needs to be hyperlinked. You can set the hyperlink property in the Property Inspector of this object. This way, the hyperlinks will be proper in all cases.

  • Timesheet Application And PDF Printing

    Hi,
I demo'd the time sheet application from the apex server and the management team here really liked it so I moved to our machine here and when i try the pdf printing i get the following error

I dont have access to the back end and wouldn't know what to do anyway so before i get the DBA here to investigate the setup is there some variable that I have to change in the app or do I have to get the DBA to follow sets 4 and 5 on the PDF Printing in Application Express 3.0 page
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/configure_printing.html
    Thanks Andy

    Hello,
Yes you have to do steps 4 or 5, those set up the servers that do the actual PDF rendering.
It's not as hard as it looks, at least if you are just setting it up for demo purposes.
There have been several links on setting up BI Publisher , there is a screencast of setup up FOP on OC4J
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/fop_war_viewlet_swf.html
and I have this screencast that shows setting up Cocoon to do the PDF rendering.

  • Master Detail Report for PDF Printing

    Dear All,
While trying to create a master detail report using Oracle APEX 4.2 and BI Publisher. I tried creating report queries and report layout following the below mentioned steps.
CREATE TYPE emp_row AS OBJECT (
      EMPNO NUMBER(4),
      ENAME VARCHAR2(10),
      JOB VARCHAR2(9),
      MGR NUMBER(4),
      HIREDATE DATE,
      SAL NUMBER(7,2),
      COMM NUMBER(7,2)
    CREATE TYPE emp_tab AS TABLE OF emp_row;
CREATE TYPE dept_row AS OBJECT (
      DEPTNO NUMBER(2),
      DNAME VARCHAR2(14),
      LOC VARCHAR2(13),
      EMP_LIST emp_tab
    SELECT SYS_XMLAGG (
      SYS_XMLGEN(
      dept_row(
      d.deptno, d.dname, d.loc,
      CAST(MULTISET(SELECT e.empno, e.ename, e.job, e.mgr, e.hiredate, e.sal, e.comm
      FROM emp e
      WHERE e.deptno = d.deptno) AS emp_tab)
      SYS.XMLGENFORMATtYPE.createFormat('DEPT')
      ) AS "XML_QUERY"
    FROM dept d
    WHERE d.deptno = 10;
Though the above steps generates xml output while trying to generate in APEX it says unsupported datatype. Tried using DBMS_LOB as well no luck. Any inputs will be quite helpful. Should there be any other way to incorporate master detail report printing in APEX kindly advise.
    Thanks

    Hi Ahmed_Jed,
    Ahmed_Jed wrote:
Thanks Kiran for your prompt response. I tried following the steps already using this link (How To Create a Master-Detail PDF Report) somehow the detail record was not getting processed perhaps was trying to generate xml data using the above query. Any other reference will be highly appreciated.
    Regards
    Ahmed
        Well the problem lies here:
    SELECT SYS_XMLAGG (
      SYS_XMLGEN(
      dept_row(
      d.deptno, d.dname, d.loc,
      CAST(MULTISET(SELECT e.empno, e.ename, e.job, e.mgr, e.hiredate, e.sal, e.comm
      FROM emp e
      WHERE e.deptno = d.deptno) AS emp_tab)
      SYS.XMLGENFORMATtYPE.createFormat('DEPT')
      ) AS "XML_QUERY"
    FROM dept d
    WHERE d.deptno = 10;
The Report Query itself generates XML data (in the required BI Publisher format). So, no need to generate it like this.
As you are using table functions your query should be of the type:
    SELECT EMPNO
                , ENAME
                , JOB
                , MGR
                , HIREDATE
                , SAL
                , COMM
        FROM TABLE ( EMP_PKG.GET_EMPLOYEES ( :PXX_DEPTNO ))
where EMP_PKG.GET_EMPLOYEES is packaged table function which returns the Object Table of type EMP_TAB mentioned above.
When you test the above Report Query with sample DEPTNO, it will generate the sample XML, which you can use to generate Report Layout in RTF format using BI Publisher Desktop.
        Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    Kiran

  • InDesign CS4 Export and PDF Printing Problem

Whenever we print PDFs created from InDesign CS4 documents that contain transparencies, drop shadows or gradients we've been having issues. White boxes will appear instead of the drop shadows and transparencies, and the colors of the gradient images will be completely different from what's in the original file. Of course, the PDF always looks perfect on the screen, and the .indd document prints correctly. The problems only occur when we print the PDFs.
We create the PDFs in InDesign using the File>Export function, and we've tried every version of PDF compatibility from 4 to 8. We're not exactly sure if this is an InDesign issue or an Acrobat issue, but we wanted to check and see if there's something specific we need to do doing during the exporting process to prevent this from happening.
Our IT department has been working on this but they're stumped, and the fine folks at Xerox insist that our printers are "fully operational."
We quickly looked through previous postings and didn't see another problem like this one listed, but we apologize if this has already been addressed and we are posting the same issue twice.
Any suggestions or insight anyone can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Bob! I followed the information the links you provided and it solved our problems! I won't bore you with the details of how long how many different people have been trying to solve this issue, but let's just say it's a lot.
You are being virtually hugged and/or high-fived by our entire Communications, IT and Printing Departments. THANK YOU!

Here I have described a problem with the NI Report VIs and printing HTML report on different machines.
I have made a small app just printing a page with "Hello World" on it. This app was generated on my Windows XP Prof. SP 2 machine at home. My IE version is 6.2.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 and the Active-X component used is shdocvw.dll version 6.2.2900.2180, 04.08.2004 13:00.
The archive contains the app and all sources in LV Version 8.2.
I want to know from you if this app will run on your machine. Please report if it did or not together with the information which OS you are using and which IE version you have.
It seems that this VIs want run reliably on all machines.

All XP machines should be the same because we have them generated from one image and we have a central system update here. I think I have to make a look to see any differences.

  • Teststand report and reciept printer

    Hi,
We are using a reciept printer for production test of product.
Reciept printers use a roll of paper.  Page length can be any length.
Teststand insists on sending form feeds at regular intervals, no matter what I set in the printer driver.
In this case, a formfeed advances the paper, and cuts it with a built in cutter.
Thats right, long test results end up in several pieces.
While we can just turn off the cutter, a better way would be to modify the report, preferrably in the XLS style sheet.
    Any hints or suggestions?
    Thanks,

Hi I have a couple of questions.
    1. What version of TestStand are you using?
    2. What is the report format you are using?
    3. How are you printing the report ? using the print button or printing the report from some other application?

    Post Author: sditmer
    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
We would like to be able to  PDF files into a report based on a file name contained in the detail of the report. For Example, I have some data in our database relating to a specifc PDF file  including the name of the PDF that I would like to print in the header of the report and then print the actual PDF as the detail of the report. The PDF may be multiple pages so I would like the remaining pages of the report to follow on each page of my crystal report. Essentially I am trying to merge a  report header onto a mulitple page PDF file as a single report. Is this possible to do out of the BOX with Crystal? Do I need some other tools to do this?

Consider a 3rd-party tool as a solution (for a list of such tools, see http://www.kenhamady.com/bookmarks.html).My Visual CUT software allows you to automate the process of merging the pdf export of your reportwith a pdf file named based on a formula in the report.  The resulting merged pdf file can automatically be printed or emailed.

  • Comma in report column alias breaking PDF Printing?

It appears that some (but not all) special characters (e.g., a comma) in a report column alias causes an error when using PDF printing under "Print Attributes" for reports.
    This query works fine:
select sysdate as "Date Today" from dual
But the query below causes the error "Adobe could not open 'report[1].pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged...":
select sysdate as "Date, Today" from dual
Does anyone know a work-around? My real alias is "Lastname, Firstname" so I would like to keep the comma!
We're using APEX 3.0.1 and PDF printing with Apache FOP.
    Thanks ahead of time.
    Cindy

    Hi Cindy,
why not use the "Heading" property of a report column to show a speaking column heading? The column alias isn't really intended for that purpose.
Set the "Heading Type" to "Custom" then you are able to change them for each column.
