Interactive Employee Handbook in Flash?

I have been given the task to generate a new employee
handbook / standard operating procedures manual, and I want to make
it a digital, interactive file in lieu of a boring old notebook.
I'm pretty familiar with Photoshop & InDesign, but am
self-teaching myself Flash. Before I dig too deep, I just want to
make sure it's possible.
My idea is to have the table of contents, with links to each
section, etc.
Any advice, suggestions, etc is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for the advice!
Do you know if there is a way to limit what a viewer can see
using a password? (I know, now it's getting very complicated). For
example, the manual would include Administration Policies &
Procedures, Sales Policies & Procedures, Accounting Policies
& Procedures, etc. I would like to be able to give the same
manual to everyone, but limit the Accounting personnel to only the
Administration & Accounting Policies & Procedures.
I definately think that I will use InDesign instead of Flash,
since it's possible in both worlds and I am much more familiar with
the InDesign world...
Thank you for all of your help!

    You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

  • Digitally sign receipt of employee handbook?

    Please help me understand the best-practices e-workflow for obtaining employee acknowledgement that they have read and agree to abide by the contents of an employee handbook.
    HR has created the handbook in Word, saved as .pdf and wants to "add the ability to have each employee acknowledge receipt with an electronic signature." What would be a logical chain of events here?
    If HR makes the .pdf document available on a shared drive (5MB, so not practical to email), they would send link in email. Employee opens document, reads, then is asked to click on the unsigned signature field.
    The majority of our staff do not have a digital signature. Will each one at that point be taken to a link to create one?
    So now an employee has applied their digital signature. Do they save the signed version to that same folder, so that HR ends up with 120 signed versions of this 5MB document on the shared drive that they then have to check through to determine who has not yet signed one?
    Even assuming staff has named their signed version of the document appropriately (EmplHndbk_TomJones.pdf, EmplHndbk_AnnSmith.pdf, etc.), HR has no way of knowing whether the new document version has actually been "signed" without opening each one, right?
    Is the employee then re-saving his signed version to his own personal file area to look at when necessary? Or are they expected to always access the .pdf from the link that was sent to them originally (and which they would have no way of knowing if updates had been added since they signed it)? And what's keeping someone from deleting someone else's signed file from this public shared drive?
    Also, how would this process best be handled if the original document is posted on our Intranet (rather than sent as an email link to a copy of the handbook on a shared drive, as described above)? How would the fact that an employee has digitally signed the online document indicating their acceptance be communicated back to HR? What is the procedure when the online handbook is modified?
    I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around this whole process, and think I am coming to the conclusion that this circumstance (e.g., merely acknowledging that you have read and will abide by the contents of this document) does not call for a digital signature.
    Would appreciate input on the best way to handle.
                             Thanks!          ~Carol

    I am not sure you can have a signature field in a form, but if so I would add a form sheet to the handbook. You would not want them to return the full document, so submitting the data with a submission button would be the desired process if possible. The data can be imported to the form (maybe just the form page used in the document) and printed out for tracking. Digital signatures can be created, but are not necessarily validated in the manner you are suggesting. We have digital signatures that are stored on a protected memory stick, requiring a password to add the digital signature. Not sure of the details, but at least this gives you a bit to think about.

  • How do I create an interactive rotating model in Flash from a 3D model created in Maya?

    Hi,
    I have never used Flash before!
    I have created a 3D model in Autodesk Maya and I would like to use it to create something a user can interact with i.e. rotate it or zoom in and out using a mouse. I have been told that if I create a 360 degrees rotation animation in Maya and render it into JPEGs I can then import them into Flash. The next part is where I need help! Is there a way of doing this?
    Many thanks.

    Whatever interaction you want to involve will dictate what you need to do internally to make the movieclip react to interaction.  Being that you have never used Flash before, you need to learn how to implement event listeners, for either or both the mouse and the keyboard.
    Your best bet at finding some help with learning about event listeners would probably be to search Google using terms like "AS3 MouseEvent tutorial".
    As far as exporting goes, what you are most likely to end up doing is to publish an swf.  As far as my experience goes, Flash automatically sets up your Publish Settings to create an swf and an html page to display it in ( including whatever supporting javascript files are needed).  If you wish to tailor the Publish Settings to produce other outputs, or want to change aspects of the defaults, then you need to acxcess the PublishSettings in the same File options where you find the Import command.  The Publish command is also located there.

    Open the library CTRL L and look for folder call
    "PageElements"
    You will find there movie clips call page1 page2 page3 page4
    etc...
    Every page is a movie clips so whatever you import from PS
    will
    need to be converted to movie clip. Name it page"number"
    according
    to your order and do not forget to give it LINKAGE name.
    To linkage clip you need to right click it while in library,
    go to
    LINKAGE than check the box EXPORT FOR ACTION SCRIPT and type
    the
    page name same as the library name (example) "page88"
    Now, on timeline you have layer call ACTIONS and on 5th frame
    of that
    layer is the place where you add pages using action script
    once all
    the library stuff is in order. You will find there :
    addPage("start");
    addPage("page1");
    addPage("page2");
    addPage("page3");
    addPage("page4");
    addPage("page5");
    Just add as much as you need.... Pretty much it

  • How do you create an interactive floor plan in flash using AS2?

    I am attempting to make an interactive floor plan.  I am sure that I have done it wrong, I am new to flash.  So far I have outlined the rooms that I want to make "hot spots", turned them into buttons. Then I selected all the buttons and turned it into a movie clip called "mcbtns".  I then turned it into a movie clip again, named it "mcbtninside"; this is where I house all of my buttons which have instance names "btn1" thru "btn11".
    The images that corrospond with the rooms of floor plan are housed in a movie clip named "mcPhotos".  On the timeline the photos are place at 10 frame increments, and the Action Script time line above them has frame names "img1" thru "img11", which corrospond with the photos every 10 frames.  Frame 1 on the AS line has the code stop();
    Now back to Scene 1...
    Scene 1 frame 1 on the Action Script line I have in the following script:
    mcPhotos._visible = false;
    this.mcbtns.onRollOver = function() {
         mcPhotos._visible = true;
    this.mcbtns.onRollOut = function() {
         mcPhotos._visible = false;
    stop();
    In frame 1 on the Action Script line within "mcbtninside" I have the following script:
    var frameNum:Number;
    function photoChange(){
         _root.photos.gotoAndPlay("img" + frameNum);
    btn1.onRollOver = function(){
         frameNum = 1;
         photoChange():
    btn2.onRollOver = function(){
         frameNum = 2;
         photoChange():
    The code continues thru btn11.
    So I am sure that I have gone wrong in many places.  If someone could lead me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

    Take all the interactive code off the mcbtns movieclip, and even get rid of that clip if it serves no other purpose than to collect all the rooms.  Assign the code to make the photos appear / disappear to all of the rooms... (what's shown below assumes mcbtns went away and the rooms are on the same timeline as the photos mc)
    btn1.onRollOver = function(){
         frameNum = 1;
         photoChange():
         mcPhotos._visible = true;
    btn2.onRollOver = function(){
         frameNum = 2;
         photoChange():
         mcPhotos._visible = true;
    btn1.onRollOut = btn2.onRollOut = function(){
         mcPhotos._visible = false;
    If you keep the mcbtns movieclip, then your button code would have to use a _parent reference to target the mcPhotos... _parent,mcPhotos.visible = etc... actually, I'm not sure where things lie in that aspect, so hopefully you can figure out the correct targeting

  • Interactive ROI Calculator using Flash Catalyst?

    Hello, a client of ours has asked us to create an interactive ROI calculator similar to the one in the following link:
    http://bit.ly/98vjCF
    Our design and production department does work in Flash, mainly to create simple web banners, however they're not hardcore Flash developers by any means. We'll be upgrading from CS4 to CS5 with Catalyst soon. Is it possible to create an interactive ROI calculator using this software or would using a seasoned Flash developer be a better choice?
    Thanks for any info.
    henry

    Hi Henry,
    You can use Flash Catalyst to design the UI of your calculator, both for protyping and optionally for final production too.  However, to do the actual calculations you'll have to write a bit of code using another tool.  For example, you can import the Catalyst project into Flash Builder and wire up the calculation logic to the UI you've created.  This gives you the option of having a nontechnical designer work on the UI, while a less design-oriented developer writes code without having to worry much about the visuals.
    The underlying code used in a Catalyst project is Flex 4.  This should be a snap for a seasoned Flash developer to work with.  Or, a Java or JavaScript developer should also be able to get up to speed on Flex pretty easily (especially if the UI was already built in Catalyst and the dev is just wiring up the "business logic").
    Hope that helps,
    - Peter

  • If I rebuild my PDF Handbook in Flash will it be just as SEO friendly?

    I have a handbook published on our web site as a PDF  see http://kinsler.com/handbook124.html
    it seems very SEO freindly.
    If I rebuild it as a Flash based handbook will it be just as SEO freindly?
    If yes, what is the proper proceedure to accomoplish this.

    Hi Brad,
    There is also some flip book software such as Kvisoft Flipbook Maker that can help you create flash flipbook from PDF with SEO friendly, but maybe you need take more time to do your rank for search engine, the software provide you to fill meta tag including tilte, description, keywords, etc when you publish as HTML format, i think this is good for search engine. Of course, there are also other flipbook applications out there, but what ever which one you use, if you want to get a good rank for your handbook, i think do some SEO work for it is necessory.

  • Interactive PDF rollover states flashing in Acrobat XI

    Hello,
    I am having a problem with an interactive PDF I created in Adobe InDesign and am viewing in Acrobat XI. Any buttons that I have created with rollover states are flashing (disappearing and reappearing) whenever I actually mouse over them. A previous PDF I created with rollovers doesn't experience this problem at all and works fine. The functionality of the buttons still works but the flashing is very frustrating and looks unprofessional and this is for a client deliverable... Would love to know if there is any fix for this. The buttons and rollovers were created in InDesign (they are not links) so I have no idea why it keeps doing that.
    I am running Adobe InDesign CC 2014.1 (10.1.0.71) and Adobe Acrobat XI version 11.0.10.
    Thanks!

    Hhmmm...I'm actually having this problem even with Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional. Does this make sense?
    Again, I'm creating the document in InDesign CS5 and then building the PDF with  Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional, and the rollover effects don't work in Adobe Acrobat 9, Adobe Reader 9, and Adobe Reader 10.
    I'm a bit new to this process of software not providing its basic touted functionality. Is this the kind of thing where support for this functionality will vary from product to product? I had the same issue with PDF Portfolio -- where all its functioanlity was not supported in Adobe Reader X. If so, perhaps I should simply stick with the classic features of PDFs. Or can I trust, reliability, that going forward, this rollover effect will be supported in all Adobe Reader versions? This is quite an important issue for me as I provide all the documentation for my employer, including customer facing documentation -- and I simply don't know. Any recommendations?

  • Interaction between InDesign and Flash CS5

    To all the InDesign/Flash users: I have a question for you...
    I've been asked something by a client: He would like to add a Google Analytics on a Flash file to track users. He cannot do it in the HTML ('cause he only creates the .swf file and doesn't have access to the HTML file), so he needs to do it in the .fla file. He has found the ActionScript code to do so, but there's a problem...
    From InDesign, he needs to export as .swf, because he wants to have the Page Curl effect (and I think some other features also) that he looses if he exports to .fla.
    The .swf alone works well. But as soon as we try to import it in Flash (in another .fla), it looses all it's attributes/codes and just import the layout (that keeps moving from page to page)...
    If I open it in a decompiler (SWF Decompiler), it shows me there is some ActionScript code, but even then, if I decompile it and export it as a .fla, when I open I loose all the interactions (like the imported .swf).
    It's the first time I see something like that. What does InDesign do to the .swf file? How can we solve that problem?
    Any help will be welcomed (I'm not a InDesign user...).

    Turn off the editable text option when importing the PSD into Flash to convert them to images. If keeping the text editable is important then you will have to re-create the look using Flash's life effects. It's a completely different thing from PS...

  • Interactive video presentation no flash

    Hello everybody,
    I am a Visualization Artist and I used  to work long time ago doing website(I am a graphic designer too)  I been aproached by an old client asking me to develop a "Interactive video presentation" of a product for Engineering purposes.
    The final output should be Web and CD to be used a promotional media.
    My first option was Flash but he questioned that because he want people that uses Ipad and other tables be able to see in a web interfase.
    The main idea is play a short video demostrating the produc and funcionality, then the user should be able to stop and play repeat a chapter or jump to other charpter of the presentation.
    I own Creative cloud and some 3D softwares so I think I should be fine software wise, but my question is if there is something New in Adobe that I can use instead of Flash to produce something like this?
    Can I do everything at once or I need to prepare a video for Web in Flash an other for a CD and some App for tablets everything separated?
    any gidance will be much apreciated.

    This may not be the most efficient way to do this, but you could have the mouse click incriment a counter, and on the last frame of the loop have a statement basically saying if the counter is greater than 0, then play the second loop, and set up another mouse event to incriment a second counter if loop2 is playing, so on and so forth.  Not exactly sure how you're planning to organize this, and what version of actionscript you plan on using so I can't really give you too much help in terms of the specific coding.

  • Creating a interactive product demo in flash?

    Hi All,
    I have to create a interactive produc demo for one of the product, I have created every thing except the product rotation feature, I mean end user can rotate the product in 360 degrees as per the their wish using mouse. I have all sides of images of the product, but I don't know how to create the interaction, Please any one help me on the this.
    Thanks in advance
    Thanks and Regards
    Santhosh Kumar Mallepaddy

    I think you don't need a 3D model for this. I wasn't able to get the "model" to rotate where you could see either the top or the bottom "end on." Therefore, all you really need is the images going around the object in one dimension. In the case shown in the demo, this means all around the horizontal axis of the phone.
    Once you have that, you would adjust the playhead in a mc containing those images, in order, based on the left and right motion of the mouse. You'd rotate the entire MC based on where the mouse is relative to the center.
    Hope this helps!

  • Interactive PDF Preview via Flash

    I am trying to find out how to create an animated preview of a PDf book file were the pages curl and turn to simulate a real book. Kodak Prinergy uses such a preview for clients to view & order online products, they informed me that it was done in Flash, but offer no other info.
    Any info would be helpful.

    I too would like to know if it is possible to import a PDF form into Catalyst and have it create the
    form in Flash... I can open the PDF in Illustrator but only one page at a time... Since I do not see the option of importing a PDF can I import separate AI files for each of the pages of a multi-page form?  Then use each page as a frame in the timeline?
