It's a bit too big of a topic for a single tutorial. I'd invest less than $20 in Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide where she covers that topic well. She even has an extra PDF you can download with more detail.

  • InDesign document as an interactive PDF for mobile devices?

How can I export an InDesign document as an interactive PDF for mobile devices?

Avoid SWF at all cost and export using Adobe PDF (interactive).
The experience will depend on the PDF reader that the user has installed.

  • How to create interactive pdf for Ipad using InDesign CS6

Hi I created a Magazine layout using InDesign CS6 and wanted it to be viewed on native Ipad reader (but not as apps).  I put interactivity features like page navigations and hyperlinks and converted it to interactive pdf. The problem was the links and buttons are not showing on Ipad.
I tried using Acrobat Pro to create the hyperlinks and this time the navigations and hyperlinks are showing. But is there a way not to create the hyperlinks manually one by one (specially the next page and previous page). If I have more than 100 pages of documents this process will be very tedious.
Is there a solution to create the interactive pdf directly from InDesign without creating the links in Acrobat?

    Hi Guys
This is Sean Smith.  Marilou who wrote the original post works for me.  Bob if you could point us in the direction of details you need I’ll ensure we provide the additional information as soon as possible.
M tells me she pretty much doing exactly what Steve's article suggests.
The concern is what a remarkably cumbersome process this appears to be.
Even though I believe her explanation entirely I find the problem to be highly disconcerting as it’s wasting an immense amount of valuable time and inhibiting the production process significantly.
She is producing wonderful results but via an immensely painstaking process fraught with potential for error.  Each page link has to be manually linked to the next by number.  It’s entirely possible to make a mistake and link to the incorrect page thus missing pages.
If she inserts a new page – guess what? All the pages links have to changed manually and double checked yet again.
If she makes a ‘Contents’ section as we do and exports the InDesign file as an interactive PDF all the contents items and links are missing and are therefore blank.
She then has to export the document as a plain PDF and do the job again in Acrobat.
For an extravagantly wealthy company with such extraordinarily expensive software I find this to be entirely incredulous.
Who is the Product Manager for InDesign?
Are they aware of this issue?
What are they doing about it and when will it be done?
Just curious are you guys paid employees or volunteers as this appears to be an official forum and we are new here?
Digital publishing of PDF magazines appears to be an explosive growth market especially for platforms such as the iPad but this primary product for the task appears to be inadequate or ill-conceived.
Is DPS a possible solution or is this more for Apps than PDF production?

  • In InDesign, how can I name individual cells in a table for interactive PDFs?

Hi, I'm creating interactive PDFs for a client that include tables with empty cells that will be populated afterwards (depending on what information a customer puts in on a form).
The forms are created in InDesign and exported as interactive PDFs, but I need to be able to name the live fields (in InDesign) before I export the Interactive PDF, so that I don't have to select each indivual field in the final PDF and rename them.
The reason I want to be able to do this pre-PDF production, is because the forms will be rebranded over and over again and I don't want to have to rename hundreds of cells time and time again in Acrobat Pro.
The deveopler who's populating the cells already has predefined names for them, so I can's simply give him the names that Acrobat automatically defines.

What version of InDesign are you using? If CS6 or CC, you can add fields and enter a name for each in the Name field of the Buttons and Forms panel.

  • Licensing concerns for end users of Interactive PDFs

    The following is hypothetical...
My Company has bought and has licensed some Adobe Creative Suite software in order to use LiveCycle Designer to produce Interactive PDFs for use by any type of Customer - internal to the Company or external to the Company.
Once an Interactive PDF has been produced and then distributed out to the Customer, does the Customer need to have a license in place to use the PDF? Does the Company have to ensure the Customer has a License in place? Is the Company going against any particular License?
Sorry to be vague but I guess the bottom line is what and who needs to be Licensed in order to use and/or distribute Adobe Interactive PDFs?
    Thanks,

If the forms are just going to be distributed, filled in by Reader and the results submitted as a web form would be, there are no limitations... that's part of the value of PDF and the Adobe Reader.
But if you take the form and reader-extend it with Acrobat Pro to allow local save of the filled-in form, there are licensing limitations. I recently covered this in another post, so I suggest looking there. If there are more questions, just post them to this thread.

  • Adobe Interactive PDF - Submit by mail directly without intermediate outlook window

    Hello,
We are in a SAP 46c ECC6 upgrade, and we use Adobe interactive PDF for some ESS specific functionalities.
    We use also outlook.
We have an interactive PDF with submit button (execute sendmail).
When we click on it, an outlook window appears, and fields are correctly filled with our information (to; object; attachement), but we still have to CLICK on the outlook send button.
Because the goal of this interactive PDF is partly to simplify the users actions, we want to avoid this last click step, and directly send the mail.
Do you have any idea ?
    Thanks.

Did you use this script in your button?

    Hey Grant,
thank you so much for your effort. But I have to say that that's not the solution for my problem.
You see my interactive features work perfectly with Adobe Reader 8. But with the Reader 10 it jsut won't work.
I've created a pdf for you to see but I ripped it off all its former content:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/824709/Adobe%20Test.pdf
    and here's the .indd file
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/824709/Adobe%20Test.indd
You see, I want the buttons if clicked appear in another state and show a different Picture.
And now it even seems to work. But when I tried it again with all the content the pictures won't change anymore

  • Interactive PDF Sluggish

We have created and interactive PDF for our catalog. The form has over 1600 fields including calculations on the order sheet and photos of the products. When we run it on a mobile tablet device, it is either sluggish or locks up and when running on a Mac or PC it is really slow. I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how to optimize the form to increase the speed or an alternative option for distributing the form to dealers for input. I welcome your ideas.

If the sluggishness is due to rendering of the images, you may be able to reduce the size of the images. Whether that would be acceptable is hard to say without seeing the document.
When you use calculated fields, the value of each calculated field is recalculated whenever any field value changes, so it can take some time. There are techniques that can be used to speed things up considerably, but unfortunately many aren't supported with Reader for iOS since it lacks support for the necessary JavaScript methods and properties. There is a possibility to speed things up on Mac/Windows, but I'd have to take a look at the form to make specific recommendations.
In any case it would be good to try to nail down the source of the sluggishness. You can do this (in Win/Mac) by temporarily disabling automatic calculations and observe the behavior. With Reader for iOS, you can create a new PDF that has no calculations. If it still locks up then it's not due to the calculations.

  • Interactive PDF: Is this possible in InDesign?

    Hi all,
I have been tasked with creating an interactive PDF for a project.
We would like to produce something similar to the print screens attached (I have removed all content).
Basically we would like to create click/rollovers on the page, which trigger caption/further reading boxes. Obviously we would like to use the side navigation bar to trigger other pages in the document.
I have looked around online but it may be that i'm not using the right search terms. I have found a few tutorials and had a try, but none of them seem to do what we are looking for.
Also once I had added interactivity, none of the functions would work once exported to PDF, but they did work in the flash viewer. It may be that my settings need tweaking.
I'm sure this is a very simple job, and having to post is my last resort - i'm usually up on things like this, promise!
Thank you in advance for any help.
    Dave

I think it could be accomplished with interactive PDF if you chose Show/Hide fields.
Do a Google search on "show hide fields InDesign tutorial"
BTW, only the actions at the top and at the bottom of the Actions list in the Buttons & Forms panel can be used in PDF files. The ones in the middle are only for Flash (SWF).

  • Interactive PDF - Offset Printing

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can advise me on the best way to set up an Interactive PDF for offset printing? The underlying PDF is a high res PDF with bleed and trims. However, I'm not sure what happens with the form fields. Any thoughts?
    Mac 10.6.7
    InDesign CS5
    Acrobat Pro 9.4.4
    Cheers,
    Tricia

Form fields are a tricky one, as it depends on where you're ripping the separations. If you print to separations from Acrobat, the data in printable form fields will appear on the plates as part of the page content. However most hardware RIPs will either throw an error, or ignore form fields, buttons, etc. and just print the page content. in the PDF specification form fields, buttons and annotations are always RGB, so you can't for example have a text field with "cyan" text, it'll be the multi-plate equivalent shade of "blue". As a special case, in Acrobat the default black text fields are separated to a single plate (K) even though on screen they're RGB 0,0,0.
It's also important to make sure your underlying PDF is in the correct color space. Exporting to "PDF (Interactive)" from InDesign means you'll convert everything to DeviceRGB, but for offset you want to keep everything in (or convert to) CMYK, with or without spots, and presumably want to embed profile information too. You only have access to the "output" controls when you export to "PDF (Print)" - using that route you can still export your form fields and multimedia, but they'll remain in RGB no matter what you do.

  • In-Design Interactive PDF Problems

    Hi All,
I've been using InDesign recently to produce interactive PDFs for a client I'm working with. The current PDF that I'm putting together has about 13 different SWF files embedded into the file which I created using the interactive features of Indesign CS5.
Previous PDFs that I have created like this have run fine but this latest one loads really slowly and each animation really stutters and doesn't flow properly when loaded. I've optimised all the animations to 72dpi and medium jpeg compression but this doesn't make any difference. I've also exported the PDF using 72dpi and med JPEG compression.
Can someone please help out by explaining how I can optimise the animations even further so the whole PDF runs smoothly and dosn't take ages to skip to each page?
    Thanks in advance
    Rosedani

I think you posted this question a day or two ago. Lack of response probably indicates that we have no idea. You're pushing the limits of the technology and you may need to think of another way to do it or live with the slow performance. Mixing two technologies (SWF and PDF) is inherently a challenging situation.

  • Zoom buttons in flash for a interactive PDF file

hi i have created a interactive PDF in indesign CS5 and i'm exporting it as a SWF but my issue is that indesign dose not allow you to create a zoom in and out function: please see example in link http://www.mentalhealthcommission.ca/annualreport/
it is the toolbar at the bottom i'm intersted in. dose any one have a example or tutorial that on how i can include this in my interactive file.

    Hi.
I'm not sure about what to you mean. But I create first the crossword with Excel, I mean to put the words in the right order and the questions and/or cue too. Then I create a table in InDesign and format some cells with black background and some borders. I upload both captures, from Excel and from InDesigne. Then with Adobe X Pro I create a form, so I can create singles inputs for the crossword.
I hope i understand your question.
