Interactive pdf with InDesign CS4

I'm trying to create a 20 page interactive pdf but having a horrible time with rollover buttons.
The look of the document is like a manila folder with about 8 tabs, which represents the chapters, peeking out from under a designed cover. I'd like the reader to be able to click on those tabs in order to access the chapters.
Now after converting the tabs to rollovers, the problem hits when I export to pdf. When I open the pdf, rIght off the bat the cover is behind all of the tabs.  The rollovers work but the cover needs to be in front of the tabs.
When I remove the rollover effects and export to pdf, everything goes back to normal, but of course without interactivity.
Is there a way to fix this, or do buttons always jump to the front of things?
Thanks much to all.
oh, doing this on a pc btw.
Actually, the same thing happens on my new mac pro as well.

Current Acrobat versions will have security issues. The only way I know is to go into Acrobat's preferences for Multimedia, Trust Manager and Security to allow from certain sources. I haven't done that, so you should probably ask advice on the Acrobat forum.
Linking video should have no effect on quality. It's all in how you've encoded the video.

  • Export interactive pdf with InDesign CS4 (linked avi)

    Hello
I've exported an avi linked video to pdf from InDesign CS4. Video is playing but I have a few questions.
    1. Any way to get around the security stuff in Acrobat? Allow blocked content blocked, etc. without user needing to allow.
    2. Does the export degrade (lower) video quality if the video is linked? End user said video quality was poor.
    Thanks.

  • Interactive PDFs from InDesign

Has anyone created an interactive PDF with InDesign that has links to a specific page in a separate PDF? If yes, can you suggest where I might find good instructions to do this? I used Acrobat to create the links using relative paths and they worked fine as long as the PDFs were viewed with a browser, but when a reader downloads the first file from the web to their hard drive (making PDF "A" no longer in the same location relative to PDF "B") the links are then broken. So, I re-created the links in Acrobat using absolute paths for the links and the links work for me, but my client says they don't. Is there a better InDesign way to do this?
    Thnaks in advance,
    Suzanne Roberts

There are lots you can do. Unembed fonts for one. This would require using stock fonts like times, arial, geneva, monaco, etc. Optimized images in Acrobat.
There is plenty of info on the web. Check this google result from my search

  • Interactive pdf in indesign with hyperlinks warning

create adverts that are interactive pdf in indesign with hyperlinks and mail to links and now we are assembling the document back together in the form of a book but on importing the pdf back into indesign we are getting the
warning: “this file may contain newer extensions or information than this viewer can support. it may not open of display correctly and cannot be changed.”
when the pdf imports the hyperlinks on the text work but the hyperlinks on the images are gone?
    Using version cs5 v7.0.4

@Steve – I'm not so sure about that.
At least the OP could experiment with Acrobat Pro's "Import as Layer" function.
With "Import as Layer" you could import another PDF to a new layer.
But I don't know if all the interactivity will stay in place and will be working.
    Did not test that yet.
See the screen where I did layer two different PDFs together. A German version and an English version of the same document:
"Import as Layer" is an option in the Layers at the sidebar of Acrobat Pro.
As you can see there are some options for positioning with "Manual positioning".

  • Forms Warning with Interactive PDF from InDesign

    Hi all,
I have created an interactive PDF in InDesign CS5 with a series of buttons, and those buttons link to bookmarked pages within the document. These buttons are setup on one of the Masters. It seems that whenever I get more than 10 buttons on the master, I get the following warning when I open the exported PDF in Adobe Reader:
"Please Note: You cannot save a completed copy of this form on your computer. If you would like a copy for your records, Please fill it in and print it"
I don't have any form fields in the document that I am aware of. Is there any way to locate form fields if they do in fact exist?
Is there a limit of 10 buttons per master perhaps?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Glen

    Thanks Peter.
Is there a known workaround? I ended up using hyperlinks instead, I suppose there really is more than one way to skin a cat.

  • InDesign - exporting interactive pdf with page curls issues

I followed a Rufus Deuchler adobe tv video called "InDesign: creating interactive pdfs with page turn and flash animations"  and I was able to create an Interactive Pdf document with page culrs but it is limited to only my mac Book Air as when I sent it as an attachment (pdf) it did not work on any other PC or mac.
Have  I missed the point or have I not done something as I thought the video mentioned that any adobe reader could view the interactive pdf (ie on other PCs or tablets)?
    Thanks
    David

Only Adobe Acrobat or Reader can show those PDFs (and many others) correctly. Are you sure that the PDF was opened in one of these 2 applications and not in Apple Preview or Ghostviewer or something else?
Only Adobe Reader 9 and X and Acrobat 9 and X can show PDFs with Flash content correctly. If you have an older version, let us say Version 8 or older, you are not able to see Flash content at all. If you have a newer version, that is Reader XI or Acrobat XI you need additional Adobe Flash player have installed on that computer and allow access to your PDFs. Can you check, if these substantial requirement are fulfilled?

  • Interactive PDFs with Bleeds

I recently upgraded to InDesign CS5, and I am trying to create an interactive PDF with bleeds. Does anyone know how to do this? It seems like I have the option to either make a print PDF with bleeds or an Interactive PDF without bleeds, but I can't combine them. My e-commerce site requires that I upload a print-ready file with buttons for creating templates. I could create the buttons in Acrobat, but that's a lot of extra work, and I would be going backwards since I used to be able to do this in CS3 and CS4. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

They definitely are different, in the interactive one you can specify the view and layout settings of the PDF which is great, it should have been added ages ago, but you still can't tell it to open the bookmarks panel with it, or pages or layers, you have to do this in Acrobat still which is a pain.  And in the standard PDF export you can now either not include Interactive elements or include appearance only.
It seems stupid to me to split the functionality of the PDF export into two different types.  If they want to have a dumbed down interactive one; fine, but why take functionality out of the main PDF export dialog?

  • Problems with Long Interactive PDFs with Extensive Interactivity via Buttons and Hyperlinks

I have inherited a project which requires the creation of large interactive pdfs with lots of buttons and hyperlinks. I am having continuing problems with buttons not working and long periods of wasted time as attempted exports fail.
    Background:
The largest books range from 264 MB to 411 MB – (764 to 1024 pages).  Per book, the maximum number of buttons on each page is 16, linking separate files (subsections) in the book via text anchors.  The buttons are created using Master Pages which are set for each file (subsection) in the book.  50% to 60% of the pages in each file (subsection) will also be referenced as 2 hyperlinks.  One is the source page hyperlink on each workflow and the second is a listing on the source page as a possible navigation path. I have created hyperlink destinations for each page which is used to generate the source and navigation hyperlinks.  With 2 hyperlinks representing 50%-60% of the pages - that means the largest book contains a maximum of 1200 hyperlinks.  Each file (subsection) also has it’s own separate TOC and the bookmarks that are created  (optionally) during the TOC creation process.   As currenlty formatted, the book is primarily images of workflows which mean 50%-60% of the pages contain pdf images.
    Several questions:
    1.  How do I get my buttons to work consistently?  There is nothing worse than working hard and then ending up with faulty product.  I have been thinking about combining all the files into 1 document per book.  Then I could change the buttons to objects, add a hyperlink over each one and set them for a specific hyperlink destination.  Can I do that if the buttons are on Master Pages?  Can InDesign handle a document with 1024 pages?    I can't fix the problems in Acrobat later because it would mean 1024 fixes for just 1 button correction.
    2.  How do I stop InDesign from freezing when exporting these large pdfs?  It seems to wait until the final steps to crash which sometimes means a 4-6 hour waste of time per export.
    3.  Are we making a mistake using pdfs as our workflow images?  I'm not pleased with the quality of the images we have and wonder if we switched to another image format if this would improve the results.   Would it be worth the effort and relinking?  I have been reading different information on what the preferred source image format is for InDesign.  One article I found yesterday says using pdf images is a problem.  Another site said the Photoshop, TIF and JPG are preferred but PDFs were also acceptable.
    4.  Do I need to propose scrapping InDesign as the source of the project?  If so, what application can better meet my needs?

Those are the limitations you have to put up with.
Apple doesn't follow the PDF spec. It chooses which PDF features it will support.
As to the version number (v5 or v6 or the new multimedia features in v9), there is different support in different versions of Reader/Acrobat as the product has developed. You just need to post a message to downloaders that they need to view the file in Adobe Reader version X or above to get the best experience.
Other industry standards face the same problem: How can you add new feature like multimedia? You can't always be backwards compatible.

  • Hyperlinks are not working in Interactive PDF in InDesign CS5

Hi, I have a book that I previously in CS4 exported as interactive pdf, with Hyperlinks and buttons. Now in CS5 When I export it as Interactive PDF, the Hyperlinks don't function anymore (there are hyperlinks in the TOC to link to specific pages in the book) - if I export as Print PDf the hyperlinks funtion well, but the buttons no longer function (prev. Page, next page and so on)  Any suggestions?

    The process is as followed:
    Insert a 'Text box'
    Wrote Wesport in Text Box
Highlighted the word Wesport, right clicked and selected the hyperlink option
Selected the option to inset a website link
Pasted the whole link and pressed ok
The hyperlink then was shown in the document blue with an underline
Then selected the Adobe Printer through the Print option
The PDF was then created but hyperlinks did not work.
Hope thats is enough detail let me know if you need any more.

Making a interactive PDF from indesign, but it's too big. Tried to reduce file size in Acrobat, but it does not reduce file size.

Use the Optimize PDF command in Acrobat, it gives you more control. I think it's under the Advanced menu in Acrobat 9 Pro and File > Save As > Optimized PDF in Acrobat X Pro.
You might try playing around with different settings. You can also click the Audit Space button at the upper right to see if its from images or other things causing the file size problem.
Unfortunately, InDesign doesn't write interactivity in a very optimized way. You get better results with buttons, for example, creating them in Acrobat Pro and using the Duplicate command to duplicate them across multiple pages.

  • Making an interactive pdf with animations and a video?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm working in InDesign CS6 and I've made a interactive pdf with swf animations, exported it to an interactive pdf and everything works great from the little animations to the page curl. Now, I would like to put a video in on one of the pages.
I've placed it as a .mov and a .mp4, exported as a .swf. It works great in the swf and the html file. It even works great when I export the video page as a interactive pdf by itself.
BUT, when I export all the pages in my doc (with the animations and the video) as a swf, then RE-import into ID, to export as a interactive pdf... the pdf only gives me a static window. ALL the other animations and page curls work though.
So there's a disconnect between the video and going from a swf to a interactive pdf.
Can anyone tell me what step I'm missing or if this just isn't possible yet?!
    Thanks so much!!!

Without seeing actual file, it´s hard to say what´s going on... but have you chekced that Flash Player in Acrobat finds your video? When you export SWF from InDesign, videos or any other placed rich media files are not embedded into the SWF. InDesign creates a resources folder next to SWF and stores those media assets into that folder. If you don´t have that folder same place with exported SWF, you will have problems.
If you place your video file into your layout and export as PDF, there shouldn´t be any problems. But if you place your video file into your layout, export as SWF, place that SWF back to InDesign and then export as PDF... then you will lose the connection between resulting PDF and resources InDesign created.
One way to solve that is to use public URL for placing videos. Thwn you won´t need actual video file stored locally. Downside is that Acrobat/Reader may throw an alert about that.
Another way is to open your Interactive PDF to Acrobat, select placed SWF and embedd resources folder into PDF manually.

  • How can I keep the quality of an MP4 video high when I export an interactive PDF from InDesign?

I am making an Interactive PDF with embedded MP4 video using InDesign.  When I view the video in the PDF it has degraded the quality and the colour contrast is poorly affected.  I can have the video as a floating window but this gives a harsh black line around the video when it plays which is not acceptable.
Can anyone advise how to maintain the quality of the original video when it is embedded?

You can control the quality of the video (aspect ratio, pixel dimensions, frames/minute, etc.) by using the Adobe Media Encoder which comes with InDesign CS5 or later installations, including InDesign CC. InDesign only includes what you have placed and passes it on to the PDF file. There are no video quality controls in InDesign.
You cannot change the way Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader displays the MP4. If you don't like the way Acrobat/Reader handles display of a floating window, then you'll have to display it within the page. For more info, inquire in the Rich Media Acrobat forum.

  • Creating interactive PDFs with page turn, issue with PDF

I recently watch a video on adobe tv titled "indesign : creating interactive PDFs with page turn and flash animation". The video was great, simple to follow with great results, I was able to create a document with interactive page turns that was viewable in a web browser, the next step was to then create the same document but be able to view it in PDF format. I followed the above mentioned video and everything worked apart from one issue once I exported the indesign file out as an interactive PDF it opened up in adobe acrobat pro with no problem but when I went to turn the page it would lag and slow down to the point were it was almost impossible to turn the page, the page turning didn't seem to flow as well as when viewing it in a web browser. The document I am creating is a catalogue and I am happy with the interactive version for the web but I am looking at putting the catalogue on a CD/ USB and need it to open and work with PDF, it would be a great help if anyone could advise me on the reason why the interactive page turning runs so poor in PDF format. I am currently running on a very powerful computer with the adobe CS5 master suit.
Any help would be much appreciated

The page flipping is an SWF effect, so essentially you now have an entire SWF embedded inside a PDF.
If you forget about this garish effect (which, I can guarantee you, by next year will be "so 2012") you can send out a standard PDF which can be easily viewed on otherwise sub-standard computers, and using very straightforward PDF readers, such as the ones currently available for the iPad and its clones.

  • Interactive PDF with page curl

    HI there
I am trying to create an interactive pdf with page curl from a book created in indesign CS5 that has multiple chapters. I found out how to do it with one file, however in the export menu for the book there is only the option to export it as a pdf or an epub file. No swf...
    thanks

I suppose you are talking about a work-around method where you export your actual layout as SWF and then place that SWF-file back to InDesign and export that as Interactive PDF?
Unfortunately you can use that method properly with 1SWF/1PDF combination only (as you have noticed). And there is no easy way to export multiple indd-files to one SWF.
Your only option is to combine your indd-documents to one indd manually. I think Move Pages tool in Pages panel´s menu is the best tool for that but prepare yourself to face problems with styles, master pages, pagesizes, preferences etc
If I were you, I´d try to find some other way to produce you eMagazine....
