Ah, I see...this is the iBooks Author forum - try the Creating ePubs forum instead, thanks.

  • CC 2014 Fixed Layout issues

I was excited to see the new Fixed Layout functionality in CC 2014, however it doesn't work for me,
The export works fine, then Indesign tries to hand off the file to Apple's Book Proofer and I get a message that encrypted files are not supported, though there are no encryption settings that I can find. If I try to load the generated file onto an iPad, iBooks just gives me a spinning wheel and never accepts the file and it never shows in the Library.
    Anyone getting this to work?

    Monica,
    Thanks for your response.
I tried again as you suggested.
I exported a Fixed Layout ePub (exported size ~29mb) and tried to load it on an Mac, iPad and iPhone 5s. The results are inconsistent. On the Mac, I received a message that the file was corrupt. On the iPad, the file did eventually load (the quality of the output is another discussion - sneak preview, it's not as good as Circular Flo. Lots of weird stuff). On the iPhone 5s, iBooks is still spinning and has been for about 10 minutes.

  • How can I fix a dynamic zoom tool issue for users of Reader v8?

I am publishing a PDF to be posted on the internet for downloading by end-users. The PDF is designed to open in full screen view, that is, without tool or menu bars visible. This means it would be helpful for me to embed additional functionality onto each page of the PDF for users who do not know keyboard shortcuts.
In doing so, I have found that when adding the dynamic zoom tool function via Acrobat's Advance Editing > Forms > Button Tool, the dynamic zoom tool only works in some versions of Acrobat Reader and not others.
I suspect this is because the dynamic zoom tool is accessed from different locations in different versions of Reader. Therefore, the instruction that I embed in to the button tool that relies on a menu-tree command ('find the tool in this location via the menu') cannot therefore be executed.
Fortunately, it appears that there is a javascript name available for the dynamic zoom tool that I can use instead of a menu-tree command. But unfortunately, it appears that the script name is different for different versions of Adobe Reader...
Not to be outdone, we have managed to write a small piece of javascript that, when assigned to the PDF using the button tool, identifies which version of Reader the recipient is using and activates the correct script name.
    So far so good.
However, it now appears that version 8 of Adobe Reader has a higher level of security built in, so that javascript is security restricted and isn't allowed to run.
This of course means that the button I've included in the PDF to bring up the dynamic zoom tool doesn't work at all for end-users using Adobe Reader v8.
Getting the users to adjust their security permissions in the preferences is problematic and less than ideal. I really want the PDF to work 'out of the box' so to speak, without the users having to perform somersaults to get every element of the PDF to function fully as designed.
And seeing as the end-users are part of a public organisation and will not necessarily have the authority to update their software from v8 to v9 themselves, I am a little stuck.
So what's my query? I've got more than one:
    • Is there a more detailed script I can assign using the button tool to get the dynamic zoom tool to work as outlined above in v8?
    • Can I raise the security level of the dynamic zoom tool from within the PDF (that is, so that the dynamic zoom tool activates automatically and without end-user intervention, e.g. without downloading bits of code to place in file directories)?
    • If I were to assign a digital ID/certificate to the PDF, would this allow the javascript to run unhindered?

If you are going to SET an IP, a Static IP, on the computer it has to be out of the DHCP pool range but in the overall IP range the router is using to hand out. So if the router DHCP range is 192.168.1.100 to .150 you have to assign a static IP to the computer either above the 150 or below the 100.
Right I've never had a problem with ha PC. But then I have never had a problem with my Mac either.
I suspect you have some type of hardware problem or a hardware and driver problem.

  • Interactivity samples in fixed-layout epub exported from InDesign!

    Hi,
Make an Indesign "Print" file and several seconds after, send your client a real interactive fixed-layout epub.
To do it for free, just take a look for samples to Fanfan la Tulipe, searching "fanfan michel allio" on iTunes!

    Hi,
Have you applied superscript via Control Panel or Character Panel's fly out menu? I am asking this because if you have specified via open type settings, then this will not be honored.

  • Use of cookies in fixed-layout EPUBs

I am creating a fixed-layout picture ebook in EPUB2 format to be published on the iBookstore.
In order to start some CSS3 animations at the same time on both pages of a page spread, I'd like to use a mechanism to synchronize the start time for the animations. This is because I noted that, in the iBook reader running on my iPad2, the left and right pages of a spread get loaded at different times and usually the right page is loaded approximately 1s later than the left page, though the delay is extremely variable.
I am thinking about using some javascript to set a cookie in order to check whether both pages in a spread are loaded and consequently start the animations. This is based on the assumption that both pages of a spread use a webview built upon the same common Safari rendering engine which uses a single set of cookies.
    My questions are:
Is it allowed to use cookies in an EPUB to be published on the Apple iBookstore? On page 29 of the iBookstore Asset Guide 5.0 it is specified that "Books must not rely on external resources", but are cookies to be considered "external resources"?
If cookies are not allowed, is there any other way to synchronize the two pages of a page spread on the iBook reader?

Hi Steve, I am a regular subscriber to Creative Cloud and have updated all apps.  My version of Adobe InDesign does show 2014.1 under About InDesign.
Believe it or not, one of the more helpful videos out in Adobe TV land showed interactive under the Object menu:
See 5:30 on this page: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/how-to/interactivity-fixed-layout-epub.html?set=indesign- -key-techniques--epub-fixed-layout  I finally found the answer here at Adobe forums (monica).   Now I have it installed in the panel on the right.
I'm on an iMac and use all Apple products.   I've tossed Windows to the wind.

  • Fixed Layout EPUBs in Adobe Indesign CC 2014

    Hi Friends,
I'm fascinated with the prospects of the Fixed Layout EPUBs.   In the few video tutorials that are more current, Adobe host shows the ability to PREVIEW the EPUBs using the menu  item OBJECT > INTERACTIVE > Epub Previewer.  But no go.
So, I've now installed from Creative Cloud, the Extend Script tool kit as well as Extension Manager.   I also installed Edge Inspect CC.
Am I on the right track to find or install the Interactive > Fixed Layout EPUB Previewer?    I need your guidance and have not found anything through my searches online.
I exported my Fixed Layout EPUB yesterday and the slider I created by following one of the few tutorials caused some sort of problem because that entire SPREAD was blank, although all other pages were present.
    Thanks for any guidance.
    Sincerely
    mary

  • Please point to ebooks in fixed layout format with javascript animation and interactivity

Hi! I am a danish children's author and want to create an ebook in "Fixed layout" for the ibookstore. I want the ebook to have simple interactive and animated features triggered by javascript. I would like more knowledge about what is and isn't possible with the javascript and CSS in apples fixed layout format. I have already viewed the "Yellow Submarine" ebook and Apples sample ebook "Sonnet 18". Are there more examples available?
Please do not point me to apps. There are great interactive book-apps for children - but for this project I am only interested in the Fixed layout format for the ibookstore.
All replies will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  • Fixed layout ePub exporting text issues.

Hello, i'm new to the ePub Fixed layout. When i export my project i get something like this:
Font size changes, i have looked for troubleshooting but nothing so far.
When i export into pdf or epub reflow, text seems to be fine, however, on my project, i need it to be Fixed layout.
    Thanks in advance

Hey there Ellis, thank you for your reply, however, that was not the problem. I already had ADE 4.0.
The real problem was that my indesign wasn't updated, after the update it exported perfectly. Hope this helps anyone who has the same issue.

    Hi Chanh
I have not come upto the level of testing the file generated with IRS.  Will keep you posted what happens there.
    Shannon,
Apparently the new version of 1546868 fixes the issue for box number 7.  But if the amounts are huge in box numbers 1 or 3 or 15a (they use these in my client) then the amount overflows to the nearby box.  So we have again opened an issue again with SAP & will keep you posted withwhat SAP comes up with.
    Thanks

  • What .swf file interactivity works in a Fixed Layout ePub?

I've test a .swf file in an fixed layout ePub file and it seems that the animations work but none of the navigation buttons. Can someone confirm what .swf features work and don't work in fixed layout ePubs.

"eventListeners" is not an InDesign feature for buttons.

Well, you're not using position:absolute, so you've got a big thumbs up from a bunch of us for that.
Is there any chance you could post a link to this page on your server? It's much easier to troubleshoot from a browser than it is to rebuild the page from code fragments.
If you haven't gone live with the page yet, create a folder called TEST in your site and save copies of the page and css there. Upload TEST and post a link to it here. Once the problem is found/fixed, delete TEST from the server.
You can also attempt to use Firefox or Chrome to find your issue by right clicking > Inspect Element. All CSS that affects a given element will be displayed with file name and line numbers there.

  • Help with Fixed layout book.

Recently uploaded a fixed layout book to apple. It was rejected, and as usual we received a onliner from Apple - (blurry, pixelated, split across page breaks, etc.) The book is 150dpi and meets all Apple's guidlines. Any suggestions on what else we can try? The book has art running across 2 pages. Is this not allowed?

Okay, after taking a look at the book on my iPad, and digging into the epub file on my Mac, I have a couple of ideas as to why it wasn't approved (and, yes, I'd agree, the one-liner from Apple could have been more specific).
First, on my iPad, the book is not actually opening as a fixed layout book. It's opening as a regular book with your images flowing as text. With the images flowing as they are, many are browen across page boundaries (as you'd see in, say, MS Word, when an image is pasted across a page break), and this is probably why Apple mentions pages being split. In digging into the epub file I didn't see a com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml file, which is where you specify various features for the book, including fixed-layout.  You need this file in the META-INF folder.
The second issue is actually much larger, and likely the reson Apple responded as they did. Each page in your book is stored as one big jpeg containing both graphics and text (sort of like a PDF), and each xhtml page merely inserts that image in the flow of your book. Apple requires that images not contain text, as this makes it impossible for readers to search the contents or use other features of iBooks such as the dictionary and copy'n'paste.  Text embedded in an image does not scale when zoomed in the same way that standalone text is able to scale and be re-rendered as a true font.
I think you'll need to readdress how your pages have been laid out. Separate the text from the graphics and treat them as independent objects in your HTML and CSS. You might be able to get away with removing all the text from each of your jpeg images and still having "full bleed images" that are simply missing all the text, then layering in the text via HTML.
    Hope that helps!
