Interesting Characters in ePub Conversion

So does anybody ever get the following style characters at seemingly random times:  â€?  I am working in CS4 and will break the various chapters of books up, and to the best of my knowledge, have all the formatting correct prior to converting into ePub.  However, at weird chapters the above occurs in lieu of quotes, dashes or other similar punctuation.  It seems random (one book of 7 chapters had it is Chap 3, while a book of 31 chaps has it in 2, 9, 13, 14, 21 and 22).  Thanks!

It has happened to me often, and despite trying very hard I haven't been able to track the reason why. Copying the text to a brand new document and exporting the epub from there has always worked to fix it though.

  • Video Formats in Pages to Epub Conversion

I have included (.m4v) videos in my Pages document and then converted to EPUB. These show up fine when I load the epub directly to the iPad.
However when I try and upload to the Apple iBookstore I am told the videos are in .mov format which the iBookstore doesn't want.
Sure enough when I look at the epub files (in Sigil) the videos are all described as .mov. Even editing the files in Sigil then has no effect.
Anyone know why Pages to Epub conversion puts the videos back into ".mov" format rather than leave them as ".m4v"? The videos were created in iMovie and exported as iphone .m4v files.

This is what Pages User Guides says:
Pages accepts any QuickTime or iTunes file type, including the following:
    MOV
    MP3
    MPEG-4
    AIFF
    AAC
Maybe you should convert the m4v to something else? You could try to change the file extension to .mp4

  • Epub conversion changing " and ' to special characters

I am having an issue with one chapter of a book that I am converting to epub, all other chapters convert fine. Files are being imported from a Word file into InDesign, formatted and converted to .epub. Here is the issue I am having"
The Hebrews used this practice as well in centuries to come. They worshipped at “high places” prior to the construction of the Temple. The Temple itself was erected on a high mountain in its region.
is showing up like this in the epub file:
The Hebrews used this practice as well in centuries to come. They worshipped at “high places prior to the construction of the Temple. The Temple itself was erected on a high mountain in its region.
notice the symbols instead of quotes. That is happening for every quotation or apostrophe in the chapter.

Unless you've encountered a bug in InDesign, if the characters show up the same on the screen, they should be exporting the same.
It does seem likely you've encountered a bug, but I think it's a lot more likely the bug is in the EPUB export code, which is new and rather fragile, to the point where it's been completely rewritten for CS5.5, I seem to recall hearing.
But OK, let's do some tests.
For one thing, highlight the characters in question in InDesign and check the Info panel -- are they the same unicode value?
Next, let's find hte smallest reproducible test case that causes this.
So, working with a copy of your document/book, first try combining two chapters into a single INDD file and seeing if you can reproduce the problem.
If not, next make a book with only two INDD files and make the problem happen.
Then delete as much as you can of the surrounding text until you can still make the problem happen.
    Then report back.
If you can share such a file, we can probably figure it out.
As noted above, the EPUB export code is fragile. That's because Adobe used it as an example of how components of InDesign can be written in JavaScript rather than in C++, as a guide for how to extend InDesign. One advantage of that is the epub javascript source code is available (in the indesign sdk), so if we're feeling sufficiently enthusiastic, we can inspect the source code, modify it add instrumentation to tell us what is going on, and perhaps even fix the problem in there.
I'm not that enthusiastic, but I'll willing to at least look at it if all else fails. I gather you've got a deadline?

  • Pages to Epub Conversion Problem

I a graphic in pages by pasting a .png file.  The original file name contained spaces. The epub validator generated a warning. I renamed the source graphic and repasted into pages. I regenerated the epub from pages, but pages keeps resusing the original filename with the spaces! I can't make it use the new corrected filename no matter what I do.  Any hints? Thanks in advance

I think there is an internal index to graphics which are resaved into bundled xml files.
Try completely deleting the original graphic, saving the file after. Reopen it and drag in the renamed graphic.
Failing that start a new document and transfer the material to that.

  • EPub conversion of a book made by iBooks Author ?

To get a book made by iBooks Author, into the iBookstore, a ePub format has to be "available" when applying for a iTunes account
(Able to deliver book content in EPUB format, passing the latest version of EpubCheck)
Does iBooks Author convert to ePub ?
Or is this ePub format not required when using iBooks Author?

    Hello Niki,
It's all seems a bit confusing doesn't it? Here's my explanation ... Historically, to add a book to the Apple iBookstore, the file needed to be in epub format and pass a valadition check. So, we all learned how to do that. Now, Apple has added a new format, .ibook. To make books in this format all you do is create a book using iBook Author. There is no need to convert ibooks made in iBooks Author into epub. They meet Apple's specifications. In fact, ibook is a type of epub.
So now we all have to ways to get books into the Apple iBookstore: epub AND iBook Author.

  • Missing characters after PDF conversion CS 6

Characters are going missing after converting files in InDesign to PDF format. The user has Acrobat X pro.

I've moved your question to the InDesign forum.
What version of InDesign? What computer platform? Which PDF preset was used for creating the PDF file?
It would help if you could provide screen captures from InDesign and from Acrobat to show how the PDF doesn't reflect the InDesign file. Use the Camera icon in the edit window to attach screen captures.

  • Indesign document to ePub Conversion

    Hi,
Please can anyone help me to get a solution to convert Indesign document to ePub file using indesign plug-in development?
    Thanks
    Ashok

You set the indents and spacing in the Paragraph Styles panel under the Indents and Spacing tab. First Line Indent, Space Before/After. You will need two styles if the first par is not indented and the subsequent ones are.
There is an InDesign ePub forum.

  • Legacy Data Migration - question on conversion

    Hello All,
We are trying to build a generic tool which could help the conversion process in data migration.
For eg, If the material name in legacy starts with AB (AB6790), the same has to be referred in SAP as SQ6790.
So its replacing initial few characters during the conversion process.
Like this, I am expected to collect possible scenarios and
develop a generic tool, which can cover some possible conversion conditions.
Can you please help me with such scenarios, which you may have come across in project needs.
    Thank you.

    Rahul,
I strongly suggest you do a search in the CRM General & Framework Forum on this topic.  If you are looking for specific objects to migrate there are several posts on the major data elements in crm (transactions, business partners, products).
In general the technique is to use the LSMW combined with the XIF-IDOC adapter to convert data into the CRM system.
My blog here will explain the general process:

The easiest would be to create a mapping table which holds the legacy value and the SAP value
e.g. Legacy AB => SAP SQ
Then you write a function module which accepts the legacy string AB6790 (changing parameter) and based on the mapping table converts it into SQ6790.
You can extend your mapping table with field lengths (e.g. first 4 char or first 5 char) or other conditions which you would need to read and evaluate in your FM. You can get as complex as the requirements ask for.
You also need to think about error handling, what happens if no mapping value can be found, how would it be reported back to the user, etc.
In terms of performance you might want to think about buffering the mapping table .
    Hope that helps,
    Michael

  • Add / Save paragraph and characters styles in PDF

    Hi all,
We recently did some tests with PDF to ePub export (different settings, different tools). What we saw is that none of the tools were able to respect paragraph and text styles. They just threw some text back to the screen (ePub Reader). This brought us to the philosophical discussion whether it is possible to export / add character and paragraph style information in a PDF, as we know it from e.g. Adobe InDesign (via the content stream, through metadata) so "a" tool can access that information to use it for exporting (properly) to ePub or another file format. So is there a PDF-standard or 'variant' (PDF/X, PDF/VT, PDF/A, ISO 32000 as such) that would make such a construction possible? And if so, would 'a' tool (e.g. PDF to ePub conversion tool) be able access that information to translate the style info etc. to another file format (e.g. a proper e-Pub file). BTW: we tried 'Create tagged PDF' out of Adobe InDesign, but that didn't help the outcome very much.
    Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is quite possible and in fact Adobe InDesign will/can produced Tagged PDF that incorporates this information.
Of course, that means that tools needs to respect it when they read/convert the PDF.  to my knowledge, NONE of the 3rd party PDF conversion tools support PDF tags/structure ☹.

  • Preserve "exactly" line spacing in epub output.

In my Pages document, there are many inline equations (from Mathtype). I like having the line spacing set to "exactly" so the line spacing remains constant, even between lines with equations that 'overlap' the lines around it.
Is there a way to preserve this option when I export my Pages document to Epub? Right now, the line spacing is single-spaced in the Epub output.

No, if you use the ePub document model. Yes, if you mix document models.
ePub is a document markup model where you are expected to encode character information in ISO10646/Unicode and encode the logical organisation (structure) the define the parts of your document. However, ePub has no support for font embedding and without font embedding it is meaningless to talk of fixed line length, fixed line spacing, and fixed glyph spacing and sizing.
If you set up your equations in whatever originating application you prefer and save into a fixed geometry format such as Adobe PDF, then the fixed geometry file can be handled like a graphic in ePub, HTML and other document markup models. Be aware that Adobe PDF encodes the glyphs but not the characters whereas ePub and HTML encode the characters but not the glyphs which may impact search support, depending on what you are trying to do. Also, check you mathematical fonts in the Apple Character Palette to be certain that the glyphs map to meaningful characters in ISO10646/Unicode so that the glyph identifiers can be used to synthesise character semantics. A whole lot of mathematical fonts are constructed to draw mathematical glyphs from say English characters so that there is no relationship at all between information processing and image presentation. In this respect, OpenType is simply a rebranding of TrueType whereby system software displays an OpenType icon if a TrueType font file has the DSIG table - there is no guarantee whatsoever that the relationship of characters to glyphs is of this world (lots and lots of laughs to Heidelberg and its management of the Linotype Library here). See below from the ePub Specification.
    /hh
    http://www.idpf.org/doclibrary/epub/OPS_2.0.1draft.htm
    3.4: Embedded Fonts
To provide authors with control over the appearance of the text, OPS supports the CSS2 font-face at-rule (@font-face). See section 15.3.1 of the CSS2 Recommendation. The following font descriptors must be supported:
    font-family
    font-style
    font-variant
    font-weight
    font-size
    src
For portability, authors must not use any other descriptors. Font files must carry all information needed for rendering Unicode characters. Fonts must not provide mappings for Unicode characters that would change the semantics of the text (e.g. mapping the letter "A" to a biohazard symbol). Content creators must not assume that any particular font format is supported. Fonts could be included in multiple formats by using a list of files for the src descriptor; the first supported format should be used. At least one file in OpenType format should always be included in the list. It is advisable for a Reading System to support the OpenType font format, but this is not a conformance requirement; a reading system may support no embedded font formats at all. Content creators should use comma-separated lists for font-family properties to specify fallback font choices.
Content creators must always honor usage restrictions that are encoded in OpenType fonts (and many other font formats). Fonts that are marked "no embedding" must not be included in OPS Publications.
Any font files included in an OPS Publication must be included in the OPF manifest with appropriate media type (application/vnd.ms-opentype for OpenType fonts).

  • Epubs and equations in InDesign

In ID CS6, is there a way type/insert/import equations so that they will be maintained upon epub conversion?
I have some experience with InDesign, but minimal with equations so as much detail as possible would be great!

I think you have have to rasterize them using Object > Object Export Options. Choose a resolution compatible with the  device you expect them to be viewed on. I'd probably choose 300 ppi to be safe.
