Interesting differences in speed in ID CC vs ID CS6

Hi all,
I just could NOT wait to get started in ID CC so have jumped right in with a new section I am working on for a current catalog project. I know this is normally a big no-no to jump in and use brand new software on a project but I have no doubt it has already been EXTENSIVELY tested by the Adobe team and many MANY others....and all I have heard so far are very positive reports.
Now, here is my little bit of input and, at the same time, I am wondering if there is anything I can do to improve the speed a little when I am selecting text, which is noticably slower than it is in ID CS6 (by dragging with the mouse to select, or pressing shift-arrow - or any of the other shortcuts). Now this NOT noticeable on a simple one-page document but it is VERY noticeable on a larger document - for example a 30-page document that is jam-packed with text and graphics. This same document does not suffer from lag issues when selecting text in ID CS6.
But there is GOOD news too! In GENERAL, things seem snappier and moving images or simply zipping thru the document as I scroll thru pages seems much speedier. It is mainly this issue of selecting text. And drawing shapes with the frame tools also seems to be a tad bit slower then ID CS6. (I have set all my prefs for better performance, such as changing live screen drawing to never, etc.)
Oh but I DO love the darker color scheme. SO MUCH better!!!

@Jeff – don't know if there is a specific scripting guide for InDesign CC.
For news of new methods, properties and objects in the DOM (Document Object Model) in ExtendScript (Adobe's implementation of JavaScript) with InDesign see:
Marc Autret:
So What's New in InDesign CC Scripting DOM
http://www.indiscripts.com/post/2013/06/so-what-s-new-in-indesign-cc-scripting-dom
Another valuable reference (not covering CC but also InDesign CS6) is:
http://www.jongware.com/idjshelp.html
For learning ExtendScript you will find useful:
1. Learn about "core" JavaScript (there are plenty of useful courses floating around in the web)
2. Buy yourself a book like Grant Gamble's "InDesign CS5 – Automation Using XML & JavaScript"
and experiment with your own InDesign files and code snippets from that base on…
3. Find a collegue or some friends who also want to learn about it and do some learning sessions together
4. Visit this forum a lot and browse through older threads. Most threads are about ExtendScript.
Where did you hear that Adobe wants to phase out AppleScript on its products?
Flash based extensions and related to that "ActionScript" will be phased out next year for building Extensions for CC applications. It will be replaced with [HTML5, CSS and JavaScript] for building widgets. PhotoShop CC will be the first product where we will see this (maybe around mid 2014); others will follow.
Maybe you read about the abbreviation "AS" in this regard; which for some people is "AppleScript" and for some people it is "ActionScript". Don't confuse the two scripting languages.

  • CS6 - Will I notice a difference in speed/performance with only 512MB video RAM?

With regard to PS CS6: I'm specifically interested in CS6's ability to utilize video memory to make PS faster, more powerful; but will I notice a difference in speed/performance with only 512MB video RAM?
Currently running PS CS5 on an iMac (Duo-Core, 8GB RAM, 512MB Video RAM).
Was hoping Apple was going to release new Mac Pro (been saving dough for a few years now). Since that didn't happen, sticking with current Mac setup for at least another year, and this includes a video card that only has 512MB memory.
Is it worth it for me to upgrade to CS6 with regard to speed/performace?
    Any input would be appreciated.

You need at least 1Gb video memory to make use of the new GPU accelerated features in CS6

  • Between the 2 fusion drives , 1 is 1tb 5400RPM and 1 is 1tb 7200RPM, will you see much difference in speed as I understand the speed comes from the ssd part..?

    Will it not be noticeable?

It would not be as noticable as one would think. The speed of the OS will come from the SSD portion of the drive. The SATA portion is mostly used for data storage which the drive only has to access as needed, not constantly. So over all, there is a bit of a difference but not enough to make a big impact.

  • Interesting difference in Menus between 6i (client-server) and 10g (web)

I just noticed an interesting difference between Forms 6i (client-server) and 10g (web forms). Perhaps you know a work around.
We have an oracle form with a customized menu attached. The main body of the application displays nothing so we shrunk the application window down to the tiny window possible just leaving the 3 or 4 drop down menu visible. So it was basically this little floating toolbar where users could pull down a menu and select an oracle form to open.
The difference is that in 10g Web Forms when the pull down menu is accessed, the list of selectable items is contained within the FORMS_MDI_WINDOW (or the IE window). So if the list is long then the drop down list shows a small arrow at the top and bottom that forces you to scroll thru the remaining items in the menu.
Whereas in 6i, when the menu was access the contents of the menu would show in full. Even if it meant expanding the menu beyond the FORMS_MDI_WINDOW.
Does anyone know if I'm stuck with this functionality? If I'm stuck it will mean I need to make my little menu application full screen so that users can see all the items in a menu without having to scroll thru choices using these little arrows.
Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated!

This is a consequence of the client being Java. When you run a Java application in a browser it cannot draw outside the browser window area. It's fully contained within the browser in every sense. That is by design.
There is no way to get around this that I know of.

  • Is there a difference between me downloading photoshop cc vs buying cs6?

I previously bought the monthly photoshop cc, which some actions were disabled & I couldn't use.. But my boyfriend had cs6 on his computer which had basically everything on it, nothing was disabled from me being able to use on my photos. Now I wanna try photoshop cc again but I'm wondering if there truly is a difference or not between the two? Were some things maybe disabled cause I bought the cheapest monthly version?

Photoshop CC is the full version be it a trial, the Photography Plan or the Single App Plan.
Old Photoshop actions work just fine in CC. I've used my CS6 Actions in CC. Are you talking about some features being disabled and not "Actions"? What are your computer specs? • Much difference in speed? G5 vs Intel

I wonder if I've been greedy..
    I have an iMac 20" 2Ghz G5 ( 1.5gb RAM ) - I've just ordered a 24" 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo ( 2gb RAM ). And I'm starting to worry that I've been a tad silly!
Is there much of a speed difference between these two set-ups ? The benchmarks I've seen have been between Core 2 Duo and Core Duo chips - I'd love to see G5 vs Core 2 Duo...
Any guidance on this would be great, especiallt considering I can still cancel.
I mainly use my computer for Audio and Video production.
    Cheers,
    Lee

    Thanks for your replies!
I'll mainly be using Apple apps ( Final Cut, Garageband etc ) so it looks like it will be fine.
Does anyone know of a place where I can compare benchmarks of the two computers I mentioned above ?
My iMac is due to ship today... but I think it's coming from Shanghai ( it seems that's where the 24 inchers are being born )... so that could well mean nit will be the back end of next week before I receive it. I get sooo impatient! lol

  • Will I notice a difference in speed?

    Between 320GB Serial ATA @ 5400 vs 250GB Serial ATA @ 7200?
Will be using laptop mainly for Internet browsing and playing DVDs?

DVDs don't use the hard drive, they use the DVD drive, so no issue there. Internet browsing would probably feel fine on a 4200RPM drive. Don't worry, a MacBook Pro is designed for far more intense performance demands. The drive speed would only make a difference if you were chugging through hours of digital video footage or piles of 10-megapixel Photoshop files.

  • Interesting spec on speed requirements for Leopard

On the readme on the DVD, it clearly says "..G4 (867MHz min) or G5."
I am not sure that these are the exact words, but I am sure about those parentheses, which would indicate that the speed requirement only applies to the G4s.
Now, it may be a typo or a mistake, but it certainly indicates that there is no speed requirement for a G5. It could also be that all G5s are over the minimum, so it's moot - this I don't know.
Anyway, I thought it was interesting.
The instruction manualette is also interesting in that it has almost nothing about the install in it, basically saying stick it in and click. It probably is that easy for most, but I would at least have included some of the install options and what and how the install process works.
I also wonder how many who have had install problems clicked "Skip" on the initial DVD selfcheck?

These manuals didn't come with Leopard? http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/leopard/
    Have a nice day!

  • Will the wireless N router make a difference for speed/distance?

I am going to buy a wireless N series router. I am doing this soley because I would like a little more speed and distance for my computers. Right now when I try to use it outside I get low/very low reading and it slows to 34 mbps or less. When I am inside, it is excellent and 54 mbps most of the time. Do I understand correctly that the N series will help me to get better distance and speed?

I have been using a wrt350N and the linksys N card in my laptop for several months now and, all in all, I like it.
However, there are a few caveats.  The range is no where near the 4X promised on the box.  That is not going to happen.  It is actually about the same as the G routers.  The difference is that, when connected, it will connect at a higher speed.   If you buy this with visions of standing across the street and getting a signal, forget it.
It will never connect at 270 mbps.  Never.
It does not like old G equipment.  The only way that I can connect with a G equipped laptop and get a good signal is by doing it in the same room.  My really old B adapter won't work at all, no matter what the router settings are.
I have my router toward the front of my house and on the second floor (my office).  We are remodeling the basement and adding an office (wife).  So, I ran a cat5E cable from my office to hers and bought a N access point.    It has certainly helped remove the dead spots that would not be there if I actually got 4X range.

  • How much noticeable difference in speed between 2.66 and 2.8 ghz MBP?

I am trying to decide between buying a new 15" MBP with 2.66ghz processor and 256 of graphics RAM, or the 2.8ghz processor with 512 graphics RAM. Plus a 24" cinema display.
Or.. a new 17" MBP 2.8ghz processor versus a refurb 17" with 2.66 ghz processor. (both with 512 graphics RAM)
I will be using this for Final Cut Express, Aperture, Logic Express plus all the usual web, emails etc. I won't be playing games or doing any 3D stuff.
I would save a fair bit of money choosing either the refurbed 17" or the 2.66ghz 15".
How much difference does that extra processor speed make for what I want to be doing? And what about the extra graphics RAM?

I've just found a Macworld review of the latest 17" MBP and the benchmarks show that they are only 3% faster than the older ones and barely noticeable for most tasks so I am now seriously considering the refurb as it is £400 less than new!

  • Difference in speed between i5 and Core 2 Duo (same GHz)?

My two-year old MacBook Pro has a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB RAM.
The cheapest MacBook Pro introduced today has a 2.4GHz i5 processor with 4GB RAM.
Anyone have any idea what the speed difference might be between these two? Approximately?
And does software have to be re-written to take advantage of the i5? In other words: What do I stand to gain if upgrading today?

  • Difference between Speed Dial & Fast Dial & Abbreviated Dial

Our company is installing callmanager with a few IP phones (7841, 8831, 8945).
I am documenting how to use the phones.
Based on the user guides for these phones, I cannot tell what the actual difference is between Speed Dial & Fast Dial & Abbreviated Dial.
Does anyone have any guidance on this?
    Thanks.
    Mac

We have 7945's and 65's but by the looks of your phone you have a directory button.
The speed dials are configured on an available button on your phone.
The abbreviated dials are setup in your self service console as speed dials and are only available on the phone you are setup on. you press the number you configured and hit the abbrDial softkey and it dials.
The fast dials are available in your personal directory which will follow you to any phone as long as you enter your login. When you view your personal directory you can look at your contacts and you can tie your contacts to a fast dial number.
It's been 6 mo so i'm sure you might have found this already :)

  • Interesting ftp client speed issue

I've come across the poor ftp speeds on my home lan while the net.inet.tcp_sockthreshold = 0 instead of the normal 256. I had set it to 0 so I can force the send/recvspace mibs to 32768 for better internet operation and efficiency. I had no idea I would be sacrificing ftp speed on my lan. More detail: Lan is 100MBFD (verified), with sockthreshold =0, I get 1.8mb/sec on ftp transfers, with it set to the default of 256, the speed jumps to 8.8mb/sec. These speed ratings are produced at the end of the file transfer via the ftp client. I'm not sure if anyone else has seen this, I discovered it while trying to tweak some AFP/SMB copy speed settings.
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2Ghz/iBook G4 1.42Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 Gig, Rad 9800 Pro 256M

No, I've never enabled that. I got samba tuned nicely with the SO_RCVBUF and SO_SNDBUF at 32768 (confirmed by tcpdump), but my ftp get is still pretty slow, I guess I'll stick to smb to transfer data.

  • Interesting Differences Between the iPad and Android Viewing Experience

    Well, interesting to me, anyway.
    Here's some things I've noticed:
    Image Sequence
The Android is the clear winner here, as the image sequence doesn't spin out of control when you lift up your finger like it does on the iPad.  In fact, the viewing experience on the iPad is truly wretched and I've had to add notes under the view window telling people to keep their finger on the image when swiping in order to maintain control.  I was getting complaints.  Adobe, what's the issue here?  Can the iPad viewer be brought under control?
Reset the entire Folio to the top-most page of every article
Tapping 3 times on the folio name in the viewer will reset each article to the top-most page with viewing on the iPad.  Android?  No such luck.  Bit of a pain, that.
    InLine Video
I realize this isn't a feature for Android yet, but it truly can't get here fast enough.  Ouch.  Pressing on the main Android menu back button twice (fast) will exit the fullscreen video and get you back to the page, but still....  Eeew.
Reset Entire Folio After Folio Update
With the iPad, after a folio update the entire thing is reset to the cover page.  With Android, it stays where you left off.  Not saying one is better than the other, but we sure do need a main FOLIO RESET button somewhere.  And bookmarks.  lol.
No Folio Instruction Sheet on Android
I know that Apple requires some sort of content to be contained within an app before approval, but not having that folio on the Android sure is nice.  Again, wonder if there's a way to just write some code into the viewer to fool iTunes?
    Installing after download
I'd say it's twice as fast on the iPad vs the Android.  I've got a Xoom, but this is probably an app issue more than an OS or hardware issue.  ?
    Anyone noticed something else?

    iPad charger is 2amps.
    iPhone is 1 amp.
The iPhone charger will charge the iPad, but at a slower rate.
