Interesting finding about 1.2 & 1.4

Hi all
I learnt that jdk1.2.2 does not work on a machine with Intel Pentium 4 processor whereas jdk1.3 or higher works.
Can anyone help me understand the reason behind it.
Thanx and regs
Sunil

There was a bug in earlier builds of jdk1.2.2 in which Symantec's jit compiler failed to work properly with the Pentium 4 processor. I think this was fixed in builds jdk1.2.2_007 and higher.

  • Interesting finding about the whining noise

    Hi,
I have like many others here a new MBP 2.0 with the whining noise. I have spent 2 to 3 hours those last 2 days with several support persons struggling for having the repair box shipped to me as repair seems the only option for me (I dont want and cannot wait 3 weeks more to get another MBP). FYI they were unable to take care of my correct address....Hmm not very good.
I have also done two interesting tests today:
    1) I am part of the ADC and can have access to the latest builds of MacOSX. I have downloaded the current 10.4.6 build (8I1113) and installed it on another partition. I confirm that in this build, the whining noise is still present on my MBP.
    2) I have also tested the Ubuntu Live CD (http://www.mactel-linux.org/wiki/Main_Page) and I was REALLY surprised not to hear any whining noise after ejecting the CD from the superdrive.
So my gut feeling is that the whining noise is probably a software issue rather than a hardware issue.
It could be interesting to get some feedback of people running Windoz on the MBP to check if they have also the whining noise in that case.
    Any feedback ?

Seriously. do you even look at other threads before you post? lol. the whine that occurs the most has been diagnosed as a software problem. there have been many threads with ways to work around this problem. a couple links to threads that have software links or software suggestions in them are:

  • Interesting Stuff about Heat, Whining, and CPU

This whining noise with my new macbook pro has had me (and many others) stumped. I still havent found a solution, but I've gathered some interesting data with a great program found here: http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html.
First, for those more worried about the heat, new MacBook Pros do not seem to have a heat problem (at least mine doesn't). Mine runs cooler on my lap than on my desk for some weird reason though. About 50 C on the desk and 40 or so on my lap. (I had posted in another topic that the laptop felt hotter on my lap, but after letting the unit sleep for awhile, then running it on my desk and then on my lap, Bresink's temperature monitor confirms the temperatures, which could be due to the vent design or my owning a crappy desk lol.)
Second, the System Information window shows my MacBook Pro as being manufactured on 4/14/06, so new revisions obviously did not fix the whining issue.
Third, the System Information window reports that the CPU does NOT have variable speed (***?) and shows it to be running at 1.83 ghz all the time regardless of power management settings or AC/battery power. Anyone else find this strange? Both the nominal CPU clock and the actual CPU clock are always at 1.83 ghz according to this program.

Another interesting information about the whine and why it, for some of the users who have a whining MBP, didn't occur on WinXP SP2:
MS KB918005 "Battery power may drain more quickly than you expect on a Windows XP SP2-based portable computer" ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918005/en-us )
After applying this fix, which fix a power drain due to bad power management in WinXP SP2, a user reported on onmac.net forum ( http://forum.onmac.net/showthread.php?t=1214 ) that his MacBook Pro started to whine on WinXP.
This confirm what said the former intel engineer who posted on this forum at the beginning of the talks about this issue. This fix will also likely make other notebook PCs whine.
So apparently MacOS X do manage the power correctly, and the fact that the whine didn't appear on WinXP SP2 was because of not using the CPU power states in which the whine appear (C4 power state for example). So the fact of no whine under WinXP SP2 on MacBook Pro was because of a bug in WinXP SP2 CPU power management states.
So apparently the former intel guy who posted here was right and so if we assume that all what he said was right, then he also said that there is not hardware way to be sure that all computer produced are whine free (because of the nature of the components used), but that, by using component of better quality, it can be reduced for the units which are unluckily not whine free.
Considering that thing, it's unlikly that a software update can remove the whine issue without reducing the battery life, and as latest user report seems to indicate that the recents series of MBP have a quieter whine, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND PEOPLE WHO DO HAVE A LOUD WHINING MBP TO SEND IT TO APPLE, IN ORDER TO GET THE LOGIC BOARD REPLACED BY A RECENT ONE!

  • Is there any way we could find about processor and...

we can easily find about processor and ram from our computer.will it be possible from mobile phone

need third-party applications to display that information on your phone. although Nokia Energy Profiler, available from Forum Nokia website, displays the amount of RAM being used by the phone.
please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • Interesting find

well, as many of have fallen victim to the 1 year warranty fell, i am one of them. but i refuse to go down so quitely or with my wallet out so hastily to purchase a new one. i wish to fix my ipod, or maybe even fix others.
    as i have read on this here site, many people have the same problem as i, buy a 4th gen ipod, love it tenderly for a year, then it stops working... why? i do not know, but i believe i have tried everything that does not require 'sending it away'. i have tried;
using all updaters (starting from the first one)
using the updater that came with it
using other updaters that arent apple
trying to unistall the ipod firmware using the ipod
trying to formatt the ipod using the ipod
trying to formatt the ipod using command prompt in dos
trying to install other firmware (rockbox namely)
all to no avail, in command prompt, i received a cyclical redundancy error, i dont know what it means, if someone could tell me, all i know is that it means it doesnt work.
i even tried removing the hard drive manually by disassembelling the ipod. no avail. but i did find this. the version of the ipod was 3.1.1, after removing the harddrive, the version was 3.0.1 . does this mean anything?
    if anyone knows, please reply

This is also interesting as Tuesday is the greatest day ever as it has been said that updates occur on Tuesdays
Apple updates can and do occur on almost any day of the week. 'Patch Tuesday' is a Microsoft phenomenon, and not one that I suspect Apple would want to either emulate or be associated with!
...and when the "supposed" updates are coming for iPhone
There is no credible (meaning reliable) information about any update for the iPhone. Anyone who actually knows Apple's plans will be under a non-disclosure agreement and thus not able to divulge such information. Any information on the subject is therefore pure speculation.
As to the notion that somehow the iPhone will blossom due to added features or functions to link into Leopard, it's a nice idea (for us Mac users) but not an entirely probable one, since if nothing else the vast majority of iPhone buyers are going to be using Windows systems. Apple are not likely to engineer a product which is fully integrated, fully featured for Mac users, and crippled for Windows customers. The result would be to hobble the potential sales volume of iPhones.

  • I cannot transfer all of my i-tunes from my desktop PC to my laptop PC. Of about 800 tunes, it "cannot find" about 100. Where are they?

My itunes are stored on my desktop. When I move them to my laptop, about 100 of 900 tunes are "not found." Thus, I cannot upload them from my laptop to my i-pad.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then drag or copy — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Press return. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Interesting question about AppXRay

I am sometimes working on the
    http://www.itracker.org
    Open Source project.
Interestingly sometimes AppXRay does not see the errors. I can't exactly say, when. It seems to have to do with Struts forwards (Global Forwards, Multi-Modul-Forwarding, Dynamic Forwards).
For example I had the code:
    return mapping.getInputForward();
which I had to replace with
    return mapping.findForward("edituserform");
What do you know about the Struts limitations of AppXRay?

Yes, I think I can confirm this, although I am not absolutely sure what AppXRay can trace, and what not.
If you (now) checkout the itracker source, and if you then (now) compare the source to the SourceForge bug list, then you will see that there are bugs in the application, that the Workshop does not see. And some of the not seen bugs seem to be related to AppXRay limitations and / or the way the itracker is currently programmed.

  • 2.41 and 3.44 Drivers: Interesting find

Out of curiosity, I tried to load the 3.44 drivers, and ended up with the same problem as the 2.41's: A hangup @ nvatabus. Figuring that the problem was the drivers, I was willing to leave it at that, until...
I was anticipating the arrival of a new SATA drive anyway, and wanted to prep the system, so I moved my old Quantum to the regular IDE bus with a homemade rounded 40 conductor cable, disconnecting all the other drives. To my surprise, the system booted with the new drivers! So I hooked up my DVD-ROM (A BVD-108A) to the other end of the empty 40 conductor cable. No boot.
I thought about it for a bit, and wondered if my only 80 conductor cable might make a difference...and it did. The system booted after I replaced the cable to both drives!
So then I hooked up my CD and DVD burners to the other IDE port (with another 40 conductor), and the system hung once again. I disconnected the CD-R/W [slave], and the system booted!
So now I suspect that my system just doesn't like the 40 pin cables (and I already knew that I didn't like 'em). Tomorrow or Monday I will go buy a new rounded 80 pin cable and hook up the Artronix CD-R/W and TEAC DVD-R/W. I strongly suspect that it will work. (And it might fix the problem with my system not seeing the BDV-108A as a DVD-ROM. Or maybe it's just not compatible. We'll find out.)
At this point I am wondering, after reading about so many others' problems with these sets of drivers (and those who have had no problems), if perhaps our machines simply don't like the legacy cables.
I guess that I will know soon enough, and I'll post my results when I find out.

Ok, I switched to known good ATA cables, and the problem of hanging at NVATAVUS load still exists under 2.42 and 3.44, but not under 2.03.
    My drives are as follows:
    Artronix CD-R/W 24X
    TEAC DVD-R/W DV-W50E
    BTC DVD-ROM
    Quantum Fireball AS 30GB
What I don't know at this point is if this problem would still occur from a fresh format and install. Currently, I don't even want to try until the new chipset drivers come out, but I think that 2.03 working even after de-installing newer drivers is a good clue that it isn't the drives, or the OS install.
Unfortunately, to add to the mix, is anything that might have changed by installing Intervideo's WinCinemaMgr, something I NEED in order to automatically record using my MSI TV@nywhere card. I have had absolutely no luck in finding out any information in any site or forum on the web, and my support requests (MSI, Intervideo, nVidia) have gone completely unanswered after repeated attempts.
So I'm stuck with a crippled system for now.

  • HT1529 Can't find about this mac it isn't at the top left corner

  • Very interesting find

Maybe this is not the best place for this, but I found an oddity today.
The latest AVG update file, (01/16/2004) cliamed there was a trojan horse imbedded into 2 Files I had downloaded a while back. Whats interesting is, these files were MSI mobo manuals downloaded from the MSI website!
The trojan was detected in both the 6738 (KM2M) and 6764 (KT2 Combo) self-extracting files.
I had downloaded these files late last year, sometime around September, as I was comparing the 2 boards prior to purchasing the one I now have.
Anyone else ever find a similar problem with files from the MSI website?

That was the entire reason I posted it, to have others try and verify, so that IF it really is true, it can be reported.
Funny thing is, I had those 2 files laying here on my system for over 4 months, and it was just the most recent AVG update that caught it.
BTW, it was detected in both the english manuals for KM2M Combo, and KT2 Combo, BUT it could affect MANY others I have not tried.

  • Interesting facts about Nokia Map Loader 1.3 and 1...

Hi there, I have done some interesting tests yesterday after upgrading the Map Loader to version 1.3. First, I tried to connect my N95-1 (v.20.0.015) with a microSD card (4 GB) to my PC with Nokia Map Loader 1.3 running. The software asks to update to 1.2.1, then it tells my Map data is incompatible. Nothing new with this. Well I went to my wifes PC (with Map Loader v. 1.2.1. running) and found out the older version too claims that map data is incompatible! Well, then I changed another microSD card (2 GB) into my N95, formatted it, opened the Maps software. Now the Map loader did work OK. I could download maps and voices. I then changed my original microSD card (4 GB) back, and then deleted (with winXP resource manager) the folders "cities" and hidden "private" completely. After this the Map Loader (1.2.1) did work all right with this 4 GB microSD card. I downloaded the maps and voices I needed and now the N95 works fine. I haven´t, though, tried this with the version 1.3 yet. But you will find the version 1.2.1 from this Smart2go site: http://www.smart2go.com/en/help/maploader harrykaa

OK now, I have some more info on this topic now.
Firstly after having tried to open MapLoader 1.3 and getting the "uncompatible" message, you do not have to format the SD card.
Only delete the hidden "private" folder and the folder "cities". Then you go and delete the qf file from the root directory of the SD card too.
What is new is that I did this 3 days ago and then downloaded the maps with older MapLoader (1.2.1).
Now, yesterday I deleted folders and qf file again and found out that the new MapLoader (1.3) works too.
It even asks to update the maps before opening.
I did download the maps of the Europe with both versions 1.2.1 and 1.3.
But it was interesting to find out that Europe maps downloaded with 1.2.1 were 1,525 MB, but the maps downloaded with 1.3 were over 1,600 MB. So with new version you get more recent maps.

  • Interesting observation about internships

I could see that. I can figure out some stuff, if you have some odd program, or have seen some sort of bug before just tell me and it will be done. I figured out a lot of clonezilla by myself, but I had also worked with ghost before interface, storage was different, but same concept really.
Place I was trying to setup a Hitachi SAN (from like 04) I told my boss (the tech)I didn't think this was a great investment in utilizing as sat so many years, no software, docs for it, and huge waste of power when you could out the same storage in a small NAS now. She said admin want's done so let's try and do it. I kept running into issues, one time the admin was in our office I asked him takes me to some other Hitachi NAS that linked to a MCdata box, he goes back to office says that a Cisco intelligent FC switch is the controller even when the...

I've done a couple of internships in I.T depts at different places. Both of them I noticed this which was a bit surprising.
The first one I knew the tech that would be my boss, she didn't mind showing me how to use some of their software or we'd have something and see what the other thought about this idea or problem. Or I had some project and I'd mention some hiccup and how I'mtrying to fix she'd say did you check ... or sounds like you're heading in the right direction.
I assumed just because were friends, but the next internship I had another person like that.
I found interesting because a few of the guy techs I've seen are like okay fix this issue yet won't tell you how to use their odd app so you can make sure things work. Or there arrogant and you say you think the issue is X there like no the user messed something up. Or you have...
