Interesting Problem - Static Discharge to MBP Wakes Another Computer

This is on my brother's 2009 13" MacBook Pro. It is on a surge protector plugged into a wall socket that also has a second surge protector plugged into it, which a Dell uses. That is, the second surge protector is plugged into a different port on the wall socket, not the first surge protector.
The room has a furry carpet, and someone seeking to use the MBP will often build up an uneven charge walking on the carpet to the computer. When someone touches the Mac and feels the shock, even a small one, the Dell wakes up! It doesn't do this if they're on different wall outlets. Just in case, I tested and found that this only does it when the MBP is plugged in (otherwise, it would be scary). But it does it whether or not the MBP is turned on, and the MBP itself doesn't wake up from this, only the Dell.
So the static discharge travels BACKWARDS through the MacBook Pro charging cable, through the transformer, through a surge protector, into the wall, and then back again through the second surge protector to the Dell. Unless I'm missing something. I've heard of this happening with a lamp, but that doesn't have an AC to DC transformer. Is this bad?
P.S. Yes we ground ourselves before we touch it now.

Hello,
I know that it has been a while since you posted, but I am curious as to what you eneded up doing. I hope you are still alive. Maybe post the question on reddit and an electrician will answer.

  • Iphone 3g sync problems with itunes 9.2 after updating on another computer

    Hello
    I have an old mac which will not allow me to update itunes to 10.x. So I have been updating my iphone via another computer (which apple support to itunes 10.x) and my old mac has been able to see it still and therefore I have been able to backup/update it.
    However after updating to ios 4.2, my old mac has not been able to sync to it and itunes tell me that I have to update to itunes 10.1 (which I cannot).
    Last time I updated, I had to restore my iphone due to various problems (mainly to do with itunes 9.2 allowing me to download the unsupported ios 4.1). I didn't have to restore this time and this maybe what has caused me the problems. Does anyone know whether I can solve my problem of syncing to itunes 9.2 by restoring my iphone and reinstalling ios4.2? Or is ios 4.2 not supported by itunes 9.2 at all and now I need a new computer?
    Sorry, I originally posted this in the wrong section.
    Cheers for the help

    Yes, I had the same problem this time and had email communication with Apple about it when ios 4.1 came out. Apple have made it so 10.4.11 is not supported by itunes 10.1, and so stuck with itunes 9.2.1.
    When I had this problem, I decided to update on another computer (as I did this last time). But I didn't have the same problems as before (requiring a restore of my iphone) which I suspect solved the problem I have now.
    However, if the restore doesn't solve this, then I have an iphone without any music on it! Or any of the apps as well.

  • Wake on static discharge?

    My macbook pro wakes on a static discharge to the case. This isn't always avoidable, since I am not always in a place where I can discharge myself from charges accumulated by walking around. This can happen when handing the computer to a security guard for entrance/exit checks, or when I move items between workspaces. The rooms where this happens are all wood and wool carpet so there's no obvious place to discharge.
    What exactly is the computer misreading the charge as, and is there an option to deactivate it as a wake-up trigger?
    So far there seem to have been no harmful effects, only inconvenience.

    Good suggestions, but there's no metal, not even a door handle, nearby. And the guard was only one example. On dry days, all I need to do is move materials between adjacent tables and my computer gets a shock.
    It seems strange to me that the computer could be designed to react to small shocks like these. They're everyday occurences in dry winter weather and rooms where the air is kept dry for climate controled work done inside them.

  • MBP wakes from sleep, TM backup fails

    Since updating to 10.5.6, whenever I open my MBP, it immediately begins to try to do a Time Machine update to my Time Capsule. This quickly fails. If I look in System Preferences>Time Capsule, in addition to showing that the backup failed, it shows the next scheduled backup, which comes and goes with no backup. The NEXT backup will usually work. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks, guys. Here is a report log. I removed the gateway address numbers from the log since I am both paranoid and not especially computer savvy. Maybe this was unnecessary.
    I have one possible theory of the crime. Months ago, I set up an action in Automator and put it into iCal as a plug-in scheduled to go off at 3 am everyday. It is an action to backup a bunch of files from my local iDisk to another file on my iMac. Now, when I sync by iCal, this plug-in gets synced to my other two computers, and every morning, when I wake them up, I get a little alarm telling me the action could not be completed on those computers. Well, of course, since it is set up to copy files from one place to another on ANOTHER computer. Couldn't figure a way around this, so just kept it, and would click OK on the alarm. Caused no problems for months, and may not be the culprit now. Just thought I'd mention it.
    Again, this is not a major issue for me, this TM backup problem, as it does eventually backup. I appreciate whoever goes over this log below. You should really have some of your genes frozen or something for future generations.

  • Interesting problem for all students and programmers Have a look!

    Hello. This is a very interesting problem for all programmers and students. I have my spalsh screen class which displays a splash when run from the main method in the same class. However when run from another class( in my case from my login class, when user name and password is validated) I create an instance of the class and show it. But the image in the splash is not shown. Only a squared white background is visible!!!.
    I am sending the two classes
    Can u tell me why and propose a solution. Thanks.

    Hi Luis,
    Use tcode XK99 for vendor mass change, select the Fax no field. You have to take note that this changes will be only 1 fax number for all vendors.
    Else you have to use BAPI for mass change.

  • Slow wi-Fi internet connections and drop outs after MBP wakes up

    Hello,
    I have the new MBP 17 and recurring issues with the Aiport/Internet connections with my TC 500 Dual Band:
    After the MBP wakes from sleep mode, I have recurring drop outs with regard to my internet connection. Airport connection shows me the full 4 bars and tells me I am connected, but Safari loads internet pages to no avail. I then usually deactivate my airport for 5 seconds, then reactivate it. The connection usually is better after that, but I do still have drop out issues every so often.
    Anyone experiencing the same problem?
    Would resetting SMC have any effect on this?
    Thanks

    I've had a similar problem at home - it's been exasperating.
    It appears to be not just one thing but a collection of things causing the problems. The recent firmware update combined with driver updates in 10.5.6+ is one thing, but also there are some keychain issues, waking from sleep issues and interference issues.
    When the MBP firmware was updated (10.5.6 / 10.5.7) I can't be sure exactly I noticed that my wi-fi signal was effected much more by interference. I'm using b/g as I have iPhones on the same network as my MBP at home. I ruled out router issues by testing with various other machines (Macs and PC's) - and on different wi-fi networks (my office).
    The other machines didn't suffer the same problems at home and my machine did suffer the same problem at work,
    I have a feeling that the driver / firmware update combined with several Airport Passwords (for the same network) appearing in your keychain conspired together to create the issue. When the Airport Signal dropped below a certain strength (by sleeping or by moving to another room) and there is a lot of interference from other wi-fi networks - your machine fails to reconnect correctly to your wi-fi network.
    Often your network doesn't even show up in the available network lists. When it does - the keychain issue appears to cause a network timeout when re-connecting and therefore the connection fails and you get stuck in an annoying loop.
    Moving my MBP close to the wi-fi router causes is to re-connect - which is why I believe it is related to signal strength. Also using a n only network rather than b/g helps considerably (n suffers from less interference). This however is not a fix as I have an iphone (which requires b/g) and I like to use my MBP more than 3 meters away from my wi-fi router.
    Also on identical machines in my office (10.5.6 and 10.5.7) I didn't have the problem. The only real difference was those machines didn't sync with .mac and share the same keychain. Further more testing some of those machines on my home network they had no problems.
    I tried loads and loads of things to fix this. In the end it wasn't one thing that did it, but a whole series of them.
    1 - Delete all your Airport Passwords from your keychain.
    2 - Ensure that if you are using .mac syncing you replace the .mac keychain from your current machine.
    3 - Trash all your network preferences (including network interfaces and remembered networks)
    4 - Zap your PRAM
    5 - Resent your SMC
    6 - Re-connect to your wi-fi network
    And that appears to have worked for me. So far anyway.

  • Jsf problem go from jsp page to another jsp in new window

    I’ve two jsp pages attendReport.jsp and printAttendReport.jsp
    attendReport.jsp contains inputs for attend duration and employee id and command button “view” to view attendance data entered employee during entered duration inside the same page(this work very good)

    my problem solved 1- i use 2 managed bean , one of request scope (used in attendReport.jsp ) and the other with session scope (used in printAttendReport.jsp)
    2 - add new jsp contains the h:commandLink of the print (attendReportPrintAction.jsp)
    3 - divide the view of attendReport.jsp to two subviews (each subview has its own form) one contains inputs and outputs of attend and the other contains include to (attendReportPrintAction.jsp)
    <%@ include file="attendReportPrintAction.jsp" %>
    4 - send and get parameters using two methods
                public static Object getSessionMapValue(String key) {
                   return FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getSessionMap().get(key);
                public static void setSessionMapValue(String key, Object value) {

  • Static discharge, vaccuming keyboard safety?

    In the past I have not worried about vacuuming a computer keyboard. However the air has a design that kind of a catches debris. Mustache hair, unidentified objects and crumbs (hey they leap from a plate on a side table as if by magic) .
    My battery low power vac is a bit too low power. If I use an AC powered vac that has a three prong power cord; set the suction reducing window open and use a brush attachment will I be OK?
    Should I wear a grounded wrist strap? Should I shut down the Air first? I just envision what the inside will be like if I don't start now to reduce the collection of said debris.
    Has anyone damaged their MacBook Air from static discharge from vacuuming the keyboard or other wise.
    Does any computer repair person, who has experience with this, have thoughts on my adventure into input device cleanliness?

    Not sure where my reply went so again:
    Neoblackout,
    thanks again!
    What is this dust collector system thing you're talking about? Its just a normal vacuum right?
    Picture a very large vacuum the size of three large trash cans stacked up. With three or four inch hose running from one wood cutting machine to another along the celing of the work shop. Large chips of wood and saw dust get sucked out of the cutters, along the cealing and into one or two big bins.
    PS: Oh there's the first reply it took a long time to post such a short reply !
    MODERATOR please remove short. Sorry off topic. Have a good morning.

  • Frequent static discharges on X201 and ultrabase

    I've been playing with the new X201 notebook we received yesterday, and am concerned by the number of times I've received a minor static discharge when touching different parts of the notebook and base. This has happened on the fingerprint reader, USB ports, CD tray, etc. This hasn't happened for any of our other laptops
    We're told to wear anti-static straps when working on the internals since even millivolt discharges (which we barely feel) can damage equipment, should I be worrying that these zaps on parts connected to internal circuitry will shorten the lifespan of the notebook?
    It is plugged into a surge protector, but there's no grounding prong on the power adapter.
    Thanks

    try calling Lenovo and tell them about the static discharge, then tell them that you want a grounded power plug and ac cables sent out, to see whether it can solve the problem.

  • Static discharge to my Mac

    For quite some time, I have been having problems with static electricity and my MacBook Pro, particularly in the winter. My computer sits on a desk connected to a powered USB hub and the power cord. The surface of the desk is wood and insulated. I sit in an office chair with roller wheels that travel on a plastic floor mat (protects parque floor). I use more than one computer and typically roll about 5' to the other computer or to a filing cabinet. When I do this, I pick up static and upon touching my MacBook Pro there is a static discharge. It is not painful or otherwise harmful but it usually disrupts my USB connections and often stops any Time Machine backups if they are in progress. Unlike some others who have reported this situation, my computer generally continues to function normally.
    Here is what I know. Chair wheels on plastic floor mats build up static with a relatively short movement. I also get static discharges to lamps and to my other computer. Touching anything grounded discharges this jolt so if I touch something else first, it does not discharge to my Mac. I often lick my fingers and touch the metal shade on a grounded desk lamp and that does the trick. Some have advised to be sure you use a grounded plug for your Mac but the power block does not come with a ground and I am not sure it would matter anyway with the magnetic connector.
    I have also had some success with grounding the Mac directly. I found that if I put an aluminum ruller under the back of the case, it tends to disapate heat and prevents the fan from running too much. I connected a grounded wrist strap to this ruler by cutting off the strap and using a pop rivit to connect it to the ruler. The wrist strap has an end with just a grounding prong that plugs into a standard power cord. It does not prevent the static discharge but it seems to reduce its effect on my other devices. I suspect that the static disapates to the grounding cord instead of the USB hub.

    Camera Roll photos are transferred as described in iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
    If you have photos that were placed onto the iPhone by using iTunes to sync them from a computer, it is assumed that the originals are on a computer and that is the best source to retrieve them. If they are on the phone and are no longer on a computer for some reason, you will need a 3rd party utility such as http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php or you could email them to yourself. There may be quality loss from the originals.

  • Interesting problems with the 1.2.2 Debugger and String.substring(int)

    Guys/Gals,
    Here's an interesting problem to ponder...
    I define the following values in my class:
    private String descriptorClassName = null;
    private String userObjectClassName = null;
    private String name = null;
    I run the following piece of code as part of the constructor:
    descriptorClassName = this.getClass().getName();
    userObjectClassName = descriptorClassName.substring(0, descriptorClassName.indexOf("Descriptor"));
    name = userObjectClassName.substring(userObjectClassName.lastIndexOf(".")+1);
    The first line assigns the value of "com.foo.user.UserDataDescriptor" to descriptorClassName.
    The second line assigns the value of "com.foo.user.UserData" to userObjectClassName.
    The third line assigns the value of "UserData" to name.
    As I step through the code, I see the first two values being set, and yet the third value for name is reported by the debugger as:
    "name = null".
    I added a call to log4j, which reports that that value of name has been correctly set!
    This seems to be a result of the String.substing(int) call, as the call to Sring(substring(int, int) is fine.
    Has anyone come accross this one before?
    Does anyone have any workarounds other than:
    name = userObjectClassName.substring(userObjectClassName.lastIndexOf(".")+1, userObjectClassName.length());
    Cheers all.
    Regards,
    Chris.

    I've been trying to reproduce this problem and it always works perfectly. The debugger tells me that name = "UserData". I'm using JDev 3.2.2 and my project is using JDK1.2.2_JDeveloper. Here's the exact source code I'm trying.
    package com.foo.user;
    public class UserDataDescriptor {
    private String descriptorClassName = null;
    private String userObjectClassName = null;
    private String name = null;
    public UserDataDescriptor() {
    descriptorClassName = this.getClass().getName();
    userObjectClassName = descriptorClassName.substring(0, descriptorClassName.indexOf("Descriptor"));
    name = userObjectClassName.substring(userObjectClassName.lastIndexOf(".")+1);
    System.out.println("end of constructor");
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    UserDataDescriptor userDataDescriptor = new UserDataDescriptor();
    null

  • MBP Wakes itself from sleep

    Hi, I've searched the forums and can't seem to find anyone else with the same issue.
    My brand new MBP 15" 2.4 is waking from sleep all by itself, without me touching it. I've tried sending it to sleep on it's own, with displays and ext. HD's disconnected, I still get the same issue.
    I've just caught my computer running in my bag with the lid shut and the fans absolutely blazing. Any thoughts?
    It's only recently started doing this, and the only thing I can remember that is different is the recent firmware update - would this have anything to do with the problem I'm experiencing?

    I experienced random wake up from sleep followed by an ejecting noise sound from the optical drive just like how one usually wakes it up from sleep.
    My troubleshoot included the following:
    1. Uncountable SMC reset
    2. Go to this forum, read, and post
    3. Re-install OS X 4 times
    4. De-attach all peripherals, reboot, turn AirPort/Bluetooth off, with no Applications/Dashboard running, select Sleep from Apple menu
    5. Close the lid manually
    6. Keep a running log of time when MBP wakes up by itself, and how long it sleeps, brought it to my first trip to Genius Bar.
    7. First trip to Genius Bar, and was sent home as the symptom did not reprodruce in front of them since it was random despite the log I showed
    8. Second trip, symptom occured, problem acknowledged, and got it repaired. It was the Logic Board.
    It wasn't a very pleasant experience at all, but ever since the fix, my MBP sleeps like a baby.

  • Dynamic SQL and Bulk Bind... Interesting Problem !!!

    Hi Forum !!
    I've got a very interesting problem involving Dynamic SQL and Bulk Bind. I really Hope you guys have some suggestions for me...
    Table A contains a column named TX_FORMULA. There are many strings holding expressions like '.3 * 2 + 1.5' or '(3.4 + 2) / .3', all well formed numeric formulas. I want to calculate each formula, finding the number obtained as a result of each calculation.
    I wrote something like this:
    DECLARE
    TYPE T_FormulasNum IS TABLE OF A.TX_FORMULA%TYPE
    INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    TYPE T_MontoIndicador IS TABLE OF A.MT_NUMBER%TYPE
    INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    V_FormulasNum T_FormulasNum;
    V_MontoIndicador T_MontoIndicador;
    BEGIN
    SELECT DISTINCT CD_INDICADOR,
    TX_FORMULA_NUMERICA
    BULK COLLECT INTO V_CodIndicador, V_FormulasNum
    FROM A;
    FORALL i IN V_FormulasNum.FIRST..V_FormulasNum.LAST
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE
    'BEGIN
    :1 := TO_NUMBER(:2);
    END;'
    USING V_FormulasNum(i) RETURNING INTO V_MontoIndicador;
    END;
    But I'm getting the following messages:
    ORA-06550: line 22, column 43:
    PLS-00597: expression 'V_MONTOINDICADOR' in the INTO list is of wrong type
    ORA-06550: line 18, column 5:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    ORA-06550: line 18, column 5:
    PLS-00435: DML statement without BULK In-BIND cannot be used inside FORALL
    Any Idea to solve this problem ?
    Thanks in Advance !!

    Hallo,
    many many errors...
    1. You can use FORALL only in DML operators, in your case you must use simple FOR LOOP.
    2. You can use bind variables only in DML- Statements. In other statements you have to use literals (hard parsing).
    3. RETURNING INTO - Clause in appropriate , use instead of OUT variable.
    4. Remark: FOR I IN FIRST..LAST is not fully correct: if you haven't results, you get EXCEPTION NO_DATA_FOUND. Use Instead of 1..tab.count
    This code works.
    DECLARE
    TYPE T_FormulasNum IS TABLE OF VARCHAR2(255)
    INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    TYPE T_MontoIndicador IS TABLE OF NUMBER
    INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    V_FormulasNum T_FormulasNum;
    V_MontoIndicador T_MontoIndicador;
    BEGIN
    SELECT DISTINCT CD_INDICATOR,
    TX_FORMULA_NUMERICA
    BULK COLLECT INTO V_MontoIndicador, V_FormulasNum
    FROM A;
    FOR i IN 1..V_FormulasNum.count
    LOOP
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE
    'BEGIN
    :v_motto := TO_NUMBER('||v_formulasnum(i)||');
    END;'
    USING OUT V_MontoIndicador(i);
    dbms_output.put_line(v_montoindicador(i));
    END LOOP;
    END;You have to read more about bulk- binding and dynamic sql.

    Hi siva samba,
    If you are having issues with your iPhone not being recognized in iTunes, you may find one of the following articles helpful:

    I have a user on an iMac 10.6 connected to our domain.  She uses Outlook web access for email on our exchange server.  Last week she received the following message which is randomly preventing her from sending emails.  She claims no attachment was involved in the original email when this all started.  I have not been able to look at her account as she is out of the office but maybe someone else dealt with this issue.  I realize this may not be Mac related but thought I'd give it a try.  She did say it occurred once over two days while working on a PC but it continued over the past weekend.
    If an internal user tries to send a message with infected attachment using Outlook Web Access, it may report the following error message: The action could not be completed because of a conflict with the original item. The conflict may have occurred when an existing item was updated on another computer or device. Open the item again and try making your changes. If the problem continues, contact technical support for your organization.
    This is because F-Secure Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange has detected a virus in the attachment. If the user tries to send the message again, the message will be sent but without the attachment. At the same time a blank message with an attachment named "Attachment_information.txt" will remain in the user's Drafts folder. The "Attachment_information.txt" will contain information about the virus detected in the message.

    PS - have found other posts indicating that clips smaller than 2s or sometimes 5s, or "short files" can cause this. Modern style editing often uses short takes ! Good grief I cannot believe Apple. Well I deleted a half a dozen short sections and can export, but now of course the video is a ruined piiece of junk and I need to re-do the whole thing, the sound etc. which is basically taking as much time as the original. And each time I re-do it I risk again this lovely error -50 and again trying to figure out what thing bugs it via trial and error instead of a REASONABLE ERROR MESSAGE POINTING TO THE CLIP IT CAN'T PROCESS. What a mess. I HATE this iMovie application - full of BUGS BUGS BUGS which Apple will not fix obviously, since I had this product for a few years and see just hundreds of hits on Google about this error with disappointed users. Such junk I cannot believe I paid money for it and Apple does not support it with fixes !!!
    If anyone knows of a GOOD reasonably priced video editing program NOT from APPLE I am still looking for suggestions. I want to do more video in future, but obviously NOT with iMovie !!!
