Interesting Situation Between LR and Bridge

I was finishing up a job which I had started in ACR, and needed to create two sub-folders, so I did it in Bridge. When finished, I wanted to see how LR Slide Show looked, but when I opened that same folder of originals in LR, there was no sub-folders! I opened and closed LR, rechecked in Bridge and Explorere, there were indeed the sub-folders, but not in LR. To complicate matters, I opened a folder of images created long before I started the free trial, which included subfolders, and they were all present in LR.
The solution was to re-import the folder for which I created the subs. Seems rather silly, imo.If you have a folder that both LR and Bridge see, and create sub-folders in Bridge, LR will not see them.
While I am at it, why do I need to double import a set of images before LR will acknowledge their presence? You can imagine my frustration at the first day when I dutifully imported the images, after finding out I had to use the Import command, but still no files showing in LR. Only after clicking Import again on the same images did they show up in LR.
Look, I have a fistfull of folders in my G drive. Bridge finds them, just by finding the drive. LR doesn't.
It's beginning to look like a deal breaker for me, except I can really use the database. I need total bi directionality. No favored path between them, no one-way streets!

I still would like to know what happened to the .xmp files along the way. It's also interesting that there are two processes out there that, along the way, drop the .xmp's and one of them is a photoediting program!
Go figure!
Ok, after writing the above, I thought: "No, that's not right. Go back and check".
So I did, and things got worse! I picked, in LR, an image that hadn't been tweaked. It came up saying "The file named xxxx_258 is off line or missing". All the menus in develop are greyed out. Yet in Explorer, there it is, big as life and clicking on it opened it in ACR. Now the tutorial Geoff linked to in the basic tutorial made the point that the files are not in LR (they aren't in Bridge either) but they are in the OS. Just open Windows Explorer and you will see them (paraphrasing here). Yep, they are, Bridge finds it, it opens in ACR right from Explorer, but LR says it is off line.
Instant insanity!
And yes, the .xmp files are all there, from LR and from ACR.  In Explorer.
But wait! There's more!
I found out that LR will NOT necessarily open a file which was tweaked in ACR and read the sidecar and apply it. What I did was to open another folder with no adjustments to any file present. I tweaked the first image in LR, the second in ACR. Sure enough, ACR did not see the LR with it's tweaks. It ignored the side car. However, this time, LR did not see the ACR file either. LR ignored the side car, just as ACR did. Yet, go back to an ACR file before installing LR, and LR reads those images and includes the side car.
Now these images, like all of them so far, have been uploaded from a card reader, using Bridge as the path. Might that have something to do with it? I'll try an upload using Explorer and see.
Steps to reproduce the findings:
Find a folder of images which haven't been tweaked. Open A in LR, make a noticeable adjustment. Open B next  in ACR  do the same thing. Compare the set first in LR and in Bridge.
Expectations: In LR, both A and B are seen adjusted. In Bridge , only B will look adjusted. Result, neither sees the other's adjustments.

  • Can't get Camera Raw widow to open between Photoshop and Bridge.

    Okay, so I can't get the Camera Raw editing window to open between Photoshop and Bridge on my new computer. I used Migration Assist and synced up all files from my old computer, and the Camera Raw setting still works fine on my old Laptop. And even images that I edited/adjusted in Camera raw, they automatically pop up in Camera Raw on my new computer, but images that have not been openned in Camera Raw before, don't automaticlly open in Camera Raw editing window?
    How do I fix this so that all images open through Camera Raw window before in Photoshop??

    What kind of file format, raw or JPEG? If JPEG then you'll need to set your Camera Raw Preferences correctly to have JPEGs open in Camera Raw.

  • Specific differences between AP and bridge modes?

    I've RTFM'd everywhere but cannot find anything definitive regarding the differences between AP+client versus bridge+bridge modes.
    Presume you have a pair of AP1200's. First test case: One is in AP mode and the other is in WGB mode. Second test case: One is in root-bridge mode and the other is in non-root-bridge mode.
    In both cases traffic will pass bidirectionally from one Ethernet port to the other. What, then, are the technical differences between these two situations? Do the "bridges" place less load on the AP1200's CPU? Does AP-based operation yield more diagnostic data? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each mode?
    I can't find anything that digs into the details. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

    Thanks for your response. A few comments, and then a question:
    * Looks to the AP just like a standard client, so it interoperates with all APs
    What does? A 1200 in WGB mode? If so, then yes it looks like a standard client to the AP but Cisco explicitly states it will only associate with other Cisco AP's. It is not compatible with "all APs".
    If you mean a non-root-bridge looks like a standard client to an AP, that's true but the AP must be in "AP with wireless clients" mode which is not one of the test cases I was asking about.
    * No configuration required
    Of the WGB? Mine need configuration: SSID, encryption keys, etc. It's just like setting it up as an AP except for the mode you select.
    Of a (non-)root-bridge? Mine have needed configuration in that mode, too. Same as above.
    Not sure what you mean by "no configuration required".
    # Disadvantages:
    * Supports only a single wired client
    Nope, in WGB mode pre-1200 units supported up to eight wired devices. 1200's and later support up to 250 clients. Cisco docs are clear on this.
    In bridge mode I'm not aware of any wired client limits. The device is simply passing traffic between the two interfaces.
    * WGB itself is not manageable
    Not sure what you mean by "not managable".
    Back to my question: What is the difference between AP+client mode vs. root-bridge+non-root-bridge mode? Does the AP+client mode make more decisions about traffic routing or prioritization, while bridge-based operation is less "intelligent"? Something else?
    My tests show no discernable difference in throughput, even with multiple clients/nonroot bridges. When multiple users consume bandwidth simultaneously, it is shared among them just as you'd expect.
    So... what ARE the differences, as far as the decisions IOS is making, between the different modes?
    Thanks!

  • Color label incompatibility between LR3 and Bridge CS5

    I have LR3 in English and Bridge CS5 installed in other language. Is this why whenever I assign color labels in Bridge they show up in LR as white(custom). BTW, star ratings transfer correctly.

    Color labels are just words (strings) assigned to the photos, and if you use different laguages, those don't match. You can build your own Color Label Set in LR where you enter the words assigned by bridge to the different colors (Menu Metadata/Color Label Set/Edit). Then choose this color label set in LR and you'll get the colors.
    LR shows white if it cannot assign the "word" in the photo to a color in the active color label set. You can see the "word" assigned to the photo in the metadata panel ("Label") or all of them in the metadata filter.

  • Differences in colours between Photoshop and Bridge

    I have a question that have puzzled me for a while. There's some differences between the colours in bridge and in photoshop. When they're previewed in Bridge it has nice warm and sligtly desaturated feel to it. When i open the RAW file in Photoshop it gets much pale and red. Why is that? The same thing happens when i shoot the picture and the first preview shows the warm and desaturated version, but when i see the picture again it's back to the pale and red version. Same thing happens, when i open it in Ligthroom. When i click on a picture, it shows the warm and desaturated version, but quickly return to the other one, after the picture is loaded.
    I really like the warm and slightly desaturated version, so is there a way i can keep it, or bring it back? I know it has something to do with the colour conversion, that happens in the camera, but i can't figure out how to use it.
    I'm shooting with a Canon EOS 5d mkIII. See a screenshot of the issue.
    Please help me...
    Lars

    There is a non-obvious menu at the top right hand side of Bridge that selects whether Bridge displays the camera generated jpeg within the raw file (your preferred rendering above) or the ACR version (the warmer redder image).  I set mine to High Quality so the Bridge version always matches the ACR, even if it takes slightly longer to render.
    Canon has its own algorithm for conversion and AFAIK they don't share it with Adobe.  My advice is change the Bridge setting so that the two match, and try the other camera profiles under ACR Camera Calibration to see if one is more pleasing than the stock Adobe Standard.  Alternatively, you can get into modifying/creating your own camera profiles, but that will take some more study and tools, such as using the DNG Profile Editor.

  • Interesting difference between books and tutorials

    I started coding in Java about four years ago. When I started I learned from a book (that I no longer have), I think it was "Sam's Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours". I was just a kid then and I became fairly proficient in all of the basic requirements and such. Now, four years later, I am looking into getting back to Java when I can find the time, and possibly getting a certification. Instead of the book, I now use the online tutorials and API docs. Something I noticed about the tutorials is that they use coding methods that I never saw in the book. For instance from this tutorial on using the SpringLayout, the code follows this syntax:
    import /*neccessary items*/
    public class SpringDemo1 {
         * Create the GUI and show it.  For thread safety,
         * this method should be invoked from the                  <----I didn't add this. Guessing it has something
         * event-dispatching thread.                                    to do with preventing the thread from crashing...?
        private static void createAndShowGUI() {
            //Create and set up the window.
            JFrame frame = new JFrame("SpringDemo1");
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            //SpringLayout code here....
            frame.pack();
            frame.setVisible(true);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                public void run() {
                    createAndShowGUI();
    }whereas, when I learned from the book, I always did this and I still do:
    import /*neccessary items*/
    public class myClass extends JFrame {
        public myClass() {
            //set up GUI here
        public static void main(String args[]) {
            myClass mc = new myClass();
    }If I am going to get my certification, I don't want to be using practices that could cause a program to crash and get someone angry at me. If I am doing something wrong, please chew me out. It's better than losing a job...

    The book is old-fashioned, that's all. Neither version of the code is so bad that it will crash and you will lose your job and become a drug addict accosting people on the street for money.
    The "extends JFrame" version was the usual way to write things back in the early days of Java. And then people started thinking more about object orientation, and noticed that there was nothing in most Swing programs which created a modified JFrame. They simply used the features of a JFrame to get their work done.
    So under the flag of "Prefer composition to inheritance", the OO people rewrote the standard Swing application to do that. And so they should... Java is an object-oriented language, after all, so why not do things right? Let's not extend JFrame (inheritance) if we can just create one and use it (composition).
    Of course they couldn't go back and change all the paper books and all the thousands of programs that people had already written in the old way, but they could change the tutorials. And they did.
    So my suggestion would be to follow the style shown in that tutorial. You won't lose your job over it. In fact being able to explain why you did it might even improve your status at your job.

  • Metadata not synched in LR and Bridge

    I am confused. Metadata that I apply to an already imported image in LR does not show up when the image is viewed in Bridge. Metadata that I apply in Bridge does not show up when the already imported image is then viewed in LR. Hmmm, is this supposed to be this way or is there something that can be done to synch the images?
    It looks like the metadata applied in LR stays in LR only (after reading the help files). This seems to imply that it could be a disaster to use both LR and Bridge for working with your images. It looks like only Bridge truly writes metadata to the file itself rather than just being "associated" with the thumbnail that LR uses.
    Any help understanding would be appreciated.

    If you want to switch between LR and Bridge often, you should turn on the option "Automatically write changes into XMP" in the "File Management" tab in the LR preferences. (I guess to get started you'll have to export all metadata into XMP once as well: Select all images, "Metadata > XMP > Export XMP Metadata to Files".

  • A big issue between LR2 and PSE6?

    Hello;
    Im experiencing a strange situation between PSE6 and LR2. What about to tell you it happens to me twice, so I was able to recreate and document the issue. Before I go on I want to warn you that the only way to fix it was uninstalling and installing PSE6. The repair process did not work.
    Before I describe and specify the Test Script I want to describe my system:
    Vista Home Premium SP1, PSE6 and the 30 day trial of LR2.
    Processor: Dual 2.89 MHz, 4GB of RAM, 512MB ATI Graphic Card
    2 Internal HD; 250 GB and 650 GB
    1 External HD 500GB.
    Description: After I edited a RAW picture in PSE and saved as PSD I closed PSE6 and went to LR2 to continue editing, then after some editing in LR2 I decide to do more editing in PSE6 from LR2. I closed PSE6 and get back to LR2. I opened PSE6 from the Desktop and went to the Organizer-Edit-Preferences and BOOM; I get the message Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 (Organizer) has stopped working CLOSE THE PROGRAM.
    Test Script:
    WARNING: If you decide to go on and test this I want to warn you that both times I had to uninstall and install PSE6.
    1. Edit a RAW picture in PSE6 and saved as PSD, exit PSE6.
    2. Edit the same PSD picture in LR2, do anything you want.
    3. Edit the PSD picture in PSE6 directly from LR2: Develop->Photo->Edit in PSE6.
    4. Chose the Default Option: Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments
    5. When in PSE6 do anything or nothing to the picture and CLOSE exit from PSE6.
    6. Start PSE6 and from the Organizer go to EDIT->Preferences and chose General
    7. Now, if the problem its repeatable and its not only me you should get the message that the Organizer has Stopped working and you must have to close the program.
    Organizer has Stopped working and you must have to close the program.
    8. Since everytime that I tried to get into the Preferences PSE6 Crash I had to unistalled and installed again, I try to do the repair but in my case did not work.
    Note: I don't know if the same it's going to happen with JPG's or TIFF's, at least I don't want to test it.
    If somebody has any comments or knowledge about this please let me know. For now my Trial of LR2 has come to a stop.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Antonio;
    After many, many test I discovered that the problem, at least in my case it is caused by the new ACR 4.5. Please read the Thread that I post under Camera Raw. I include the link below.
    I also open two Bug Reports about this, but as usual Adobe (and other Software Companies) will never take responsability for this, until one day they release a new version with "enhancements".

  • Can I "Lock" Photoshop CS3 and Bridge Together ?

    I like to have Photoshop and Bridge open together.
    However, every time I click on the Bridge interface, either accidentally or to reposition it etc. Photoshop vanishes and I have to bring it back.
    Whilst it is not a terrible malfunction it is irritating and it never occurred with the Browser in Photoshop Elements 2.
    Is it possible to lock them together so that PS will never disappear ?

    Adobe has already very conveniently linked Bridge and Photoshop together for you, in several ways other than window clicking and other than what OS X provides.
    On the File menu in Photoshop, there's a "Browse" command that goes to Bridge. In Bridge, there's a "Return to Adobe Photoshop" command. That sounds odd but here's the thing: They use the same keyboard shortcut, Command+Option+O. So if you learn that one single shortcut, you can flip between Bridge and Photoshop instantly. I use Command+Tab a lot too, but that can be a pain if you have a lot of apps open. Command+Option+O is a direct express route between Photoshop and Bridge.
    If you prefer mouse clicks, when you're in Photoshop you can get to Bridge by clicking the Go To Bridge button in the options bar at the top of the screen. From Bridge to Photoshop, of course you just double-click the file you want to open in Photoshop.
    Bridge also has File > Close and Go To Bridge (Command+Shift+W), which is great if you finished editing a file and want to get to the next file in the folder. Just hit Command+Option+W, Photoshop closes the file and pops you back to Bridge, you hit the arrow key to get to the next file, hit Return and boom you're back in Photoshop with the new file.
    The links are all there and ready to go.

    When opening Bridge (CS6) I get the following message: "Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation" I tried and after selecting purge cache it does not allow me to select OK. Also Bridge keeps saying "Building Criteria" with the spinning wheel and nothing happens. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. Please help:)

    Maybe a Preferences reset can help:
    Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Bridge preferences file, including display, Adobe Photo Downloader, performance, and file-handling options.
    Restoring preferences returns settings to their defaults and can often correct unusual application behavior.
    Press and hold the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Option key (Mac OS) while starting Adobe Bridge.
    In the Reset Settings dialog box, select one or more of the following options:
      Reset Preferences
    Returns preferences to their factory defaults. Some labels and ratings may be lost. Adobe Bridge creates a new preferences file when it starts.
    Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache
    Purging the thumbnail cache can help if Adobe Bridge is not displaying thumbnails properly. Adobe Bridge re-creates the thumbnail cache when it starts.
    Reset Standard Workspaces
    Returns Adobe predefined workspaces to their factory default configurations.
    Click OK, or click Cancel to open Adobe Bridge without resetting preferences.

  • Bridge between DropTarget  and TransferHandler

    Bridge between DropTarget and TransferHandler
    Hypothetically, what if you have:
    1) old code which uses a DropTarget to tie together a JEditorPane and a DropTargetListener
    2) the desire to set on newish GUI code a TransferHandler. Its a custom GUI TreeTable component that I want to be the source of the data only (COPY).
    When I tried to mock something up and drag something from the new GUI to the old GUI, I did not see a Transferable set in the DropTargetDropEvent of the drop method
    Thoughts? Has anyone ever done such a thing before? Google did not reveal much.
    The mock up code I have is intertwined with the system so I cannot share it.
