Interesting speed test. iPhone Edge vs Blackberry 3G video

Check this out on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJTdFTIF2No
theres also a second test to view....

That wasn't a BlackBerry... it was a Palm Treo.
We also don't really know how "good" either wireless signal was, or how congested each connection might have been.
Too many unknown factors to even consider this a remotely useful comparison.
Bottom line... in a perfect world, EVDO makes EDGE look like a slow dial-up connection.

  • Interesting speed test - Aperture vs Lightroom

Still noodling on the whole Aperture v Lightroom thing and I as I mentioned in an earlier post, I like the corrections (develop) portion of Lightroom but pretty much like everything else in Aperture, especially the workflow and organization. The thing that I find troubling is the SLOW speed of Aperture.
So, I have Windows running on my 1GB Macbook via Parallels and installed Lightroom for Windows and it FLYS. The speed is the same or faster under Parallels/Windows than Aperture is natively and may be faster then just OSX version of Lightroom. . .wow.
This leads me to believe (hope maybe) that a performance bump for Aperture is in the works and probably won't be that hard for Apple. It almost seems like some debug/logging has been left on. . .
    Adam

I totally agree that in real life working conditions that Aperure is a faster program. I think we have to qualify this speed issue...Lightroom has less system requirements that Aperture so it appears to be faster on the surface. The best way to test the program is to run it through its paces with your current workflow.
I posted the following findings on anoher forum...
    LIGHTROOM
    PRoS
    - Easier to pick up and use
    - Slightly more in depth Editing Tools (Curves, more color sliders, Black Level etc). Can acheive the same with Aperture, but not as easily.
    - Fast (but with a few gotchas - must let the program finish building previews etc)
    - Can create and share Presets with other users and apply Presets on Import
    - History - can go easily back to Prior state
    - System requirements not that stringent. Can also Mac & PC
    - Healing Brush/Clone Tool is nicely done
    - More Camera support...
    CoNs
    - File Management (DAM) seems to be the least in depth part of the program.
    - Stacks/Virtual copies could be more intuitive. This seems more to be an after thought in this program and I am not sure what Adobe was doing here. Aperture just does a much better job in its exectuion. People that use both prorams will understand what I mean. Lightroom Also doesn't handle the import of Raw/Jpegs with same name well. Need to do a workaround.
    - Modules (forces you into set way of doing things). The best part of the program is how easy it is to figure out due to the modules, but that is the part of the program that limits you the most once you figure it out. You end up hating the thing you love the most. The modules slows down your workflow to the point that it is counter productive and negates any speed increase the program has on the surface.
    - User Interface is somewhat customizable, but you cannot customize the view as much as in Aperture...I actually found the interface too restrictive with the modules.
    - Email feature and watermark feature not as intuitive. Sends images for email to a folder.
    APERTURE
    - Best FM/DAM Features of the two. Program clearly geared more towards File Mgmt
    - Loupe - This tool alone gives Aperture an advantage
    - Stacks - Extremely well done
    - Versions etc...
    - Can get CLOSE to Canon DPP (colors) conversions when using this program much faster than Lightroom. The best way to describe this is Aperture has less editing tools, but they are all very functional.
    - Faster to Navigate and do things on the fly due to open nature which greatly speeds up your Workflow. Program geared more towards managing large amount of images IMO. The open nature of the program makes it much faster tool to get a final product when working with large number of images.
    - Emailing functions are very intuitive (e.g. adding watermark etc). Click on email and my image goes straight to mail resized and with a watermark just add the persons namde and hit send. This is one feature that illustrates why with Apple you feel as if you are working with one big program, than a bunch of seperate programs.
    - More Customizable UI..Can display images a multitude of ways
    - Presets for each section
    CoNs
    - Learning Curve. The program is daunting at first due to its wide open nature. I suggest buying a book or you will miss out on many of its features. Many folks are not aware of the depth of the program.
    - Focus was on clearly more on File Mgmt features than on editing features. The Editing features needs to be more in depth and improved. E.g. The Lift and stamp Tool is extremely difficult to use. Lightroom also has a few features that Apple should a good look at. I.e. Curves, History, More sliders etc.
    - POWER HUNGRY - The program requires way too much computer (GPU) to run it adequately. I think Apple focused too much on using Aperture in the beginning to promote hardware. The program still cant get pass that stigma.
    - The program locks you out once you start your conversion to Jpegs (you can’t work in the program during this time). Apple has to correct this because it really cuts down your productivity.
    Conclusion
The best way to figure out if a program works for your particular needs is to test it under your working conditions. I had a week of down time and I decided this was the time to learn and test Lightroom vs. Aperture because I was looking for an alternative to Cannon DPP mostly due to how it handled shadow details and also sorting through pics etc.
Background: I am a fashion/model photographer and in my field we shoot a lot of photos to ensure we have that Money Shot . A shoot with over 1000 images is quite common. From this I have to narrow down to the best photos to send the presentable sample to the client without overwhelming them. One week turnaround is customary. I shoot only RAW so I have to do some edit to get the pictures to a state where they POP. Photoshop is not used in this phase unless I see a shot that needs something done that my DAM software cannot do and I HAVE to send it to the client because it is a winner.
After testing both software, I chose Aperture. It has some drawbacks, but I found it t be the better program for my needs. It helped me tremendously to sort through photos, apply keywords and create smart albums. For Example I came up with a key word Submission Package and I created a Smart Album tied to that keyword. I went through the images and tagged all the shots that caught my eye immediately with that keyword. This was while deleting the obvious bad shots, and editing the pictures and lift and stamp. Click over to the smart album titled Submission package and all the shots I want to send was sitting there already edited and ready to go. This made the program much FASTER in getting a final product.
I tried this with Lightroom, but the modular nature frustrated me because I don’t do things in a set order...For Example I might be applying Keywords, then see a pic I want to crop, then I decide I want to stack a few pics, then I want to tweak a photo. I was so tired of switching between modules and trying to remember what I could do where that I just gave up and went back to Aperture.
Ultimately I found that Aperture was a faster program in exection. At the end of the day it is all about of getting a great product in the shortest amount of time to my client and Aperture helped me the most to meet this objective...

  • What is the best place to do an iphone speed test?

What is the best place to do an iphone speed test? I hear some sites are not so accurate.
I ask because i would always have speeds above 750 kbps but now im not getting more than 400kbps after i updated to 2.0.2 . I just wanna double check that my speeds actually did suddenly drop with the update.

I am not sure these numbers are good, but I did some tests on my phone with different settings. All bars full on both Wifi, 3G and Edge using Telia here in northern Sweden (using above site):
    Wifi Download: 4.25 Mbps (4245 Kbps / 518 kB/s) transferred 2304 KB in 4.4 sec.
    Wifi Upload: 0.9 Mbps (972 Kbps / 119 kB/s) transferred 512 KB in 4.31 sec.
    3G Download: 1.17 Mbps (1177 Kbps / 143 kB/s) transferred 1280 KB in 8.9 sec.
    3G Upload: 0.16 Mbps (156 Kbps / 19 kB/s) transferred 512 KB in 26.81 sec.
    Edge Download: 0.2 Mbps (199 Kbps / 24 kB/s) transferred 256 KB in 10.5 sec.
    Edge Upload: 0.06 Mbps (60 Kbps / 7 kB/s) transferred 256 KB in 34.8 sec.
Maybe the numbers would be different if there were a similar test site in Europe, as I often find any speed tests depends on the physical location of the test server.

  • Speed testing proceed with caution??

I've been fascinated by the various reports of variable speeds being seen on  various different speed testing sites, so I've been having a play, and the results have been, shall we say, interesting.
Let's start at the top. No matter which machine I access it from, http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ shows me 56megs down and 12.89 up, with a max achievable of 60.1/20.
Namesco's  ( http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ ) shows 33623/14734 on my "work" partition, but if I reboot into another partition which is set up for webcasting, it, too reports the full 56megs down and 14/15 up. Same connection, same wires, barely five minutes apart on Mac OS X 10.7.3 in both partitions.
If I then, boot back into the work partition, and bring up Speedtest.net not only on there, but also on a couple of other machines, and set them all to check simultaneously, the combined total of the download speeds is - guess... yup, 56megs down and around 14 up.
Aside from quite fancying my connection giving me that full 20megs up (OK, I know, it'll be 19 or so), I'm really quite happy with this - and it does point out that, in all likelihood, severely fluctuating speed tests may not necessarily be line-related. If I wasn't able to reproduce all of this more or less at will, I may have thought differently, but it's an entirely repeatable excercise.

Yes indeed, none of the speedtests are reliably accurate all the time as their servers and routes to the server are subject to varying conditions. Speedtest.net is very dependent on which server you select, as their automatic server selection chooses based on ping results, which does not always give you a server with the fastest data rates (my results vary from 35 to 70Mbps, or as low as 2Mbps if you go out as far as New Zealand ). BT's main http://speedtester.bt.com/ (diagnostics) is up the pole for most of the day and is only any use for finding out your profile. However, their beta test is pretty good and is always worth trying: http://speedtester.bt.com/beta/speedtest-remote.jsp
BBMax is often said to be the best one but that could just be because it uses a much smaller download file and the test lasts for a shorter period of time. That means there is less scope for varying line and server conditions to intervene, and for Internet Security programs to slow things down.
    So what I do is:
    a) Turn off my Internet Security program (this can be very important)
    b) find the fastest speedtest.net server and use that result
    c) use BT beta speedtest (as I already know my profile)
    d) check BBMax
The results of these three methods are nearly always between 69.x Mbps and 71.x Mbps, my profile is 72.8 Mbps. I don't think you'll ever get your 19Mbps upload by the way as I am on a 20Mbps cap but the fastest upload speed I've seen is 16.x binary Mbps and 17.x decimal Mbps.

  • Has anyone done 3G speed tests yet?

I assume all the problems mentioned here will get worked out in short order, but I've seen nothing here comparing 3G speeds to Wifi speeds on these new units.
If anyone has done some test along these line, could you post results?
    Thanks--

I know some people have been having problems with the 3G but I have been very happy with it so far. Setup took about 30 seconds yesterday. Initial speeds were around 1.8 Mbps download, then later slowed to around 1mbps, likely due to all the demand. Every speed test I ran showed the iPad to be at least 20% faster than my iPhone 3G. Around midnight it began to speed up as people went to bed - at one point I had 3.2mbps download, which is excellent considering AT&Ts max theoretical speed right now is 3.6mbps. I have never had a speed over 2.2mbps on my iPhone.
Today I was using it in the car on a route I often take. One area along the drive is an AT&T dead zone - my iPhone always drops to "No Signal" as do any other AT&T phones. Despite this, my iPad held on to 4 bars and managed a 1mbps speed test in the heart of the dead zone. I also have found the WiFi on the 3G model to be slightly stronger than the wifi only model, presumably due to the plastic top which breaks the aluminum case.
I for one do not have any problem with AT&T restricting some of the video apps. The iphone was the same way and I wasn't expecting the iPad to be any different. All in all I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

    Hi,
No, it was Apple. Last night the movie (Argo) was downloaded. It took   about an hour, however it did  not open.
I can watch the preview, but can't open it.
    Thanks for your interest.

  • Speed comparison iPhone 3GS and 4?

    Hi,
I am developing a game using Air 2.7 but I only have an iPad 1 to test it on. The speed is really good (a steady 60fps) but I'm a bit curious how fast it will run on 3GS.
Have you guys done any speed comparisons between iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4?
I guess the speed on iPhone 4 is about the same as iPad 1?
    Thanks,
    /Andreas

I have tested the same vector animations on iPhone 4, iPad 2, and iPhone 3GS. If you have selected to use high resolution, the performance on the 3GS and iPhone4 will be similar, because the iPhone 4 will have to update four times the screen area of the 3GS. The iPad 2 may be slightly faster, and I guess you may be right about the iPad 1 being similar to the iPhone 4. If you use standard resolution, the iPhone 4 may be the fastest of them all.

  • Speed tests say 6-7Mbps, but can't stream video

I have a brand new BT Home Hub 3, connected to the main socket, through an i-plate and I am on the Option 3 upto 20Mb broadband package.
When I run a speed test I typically get 6-7Mbps which whilst rubbish compared to the 'upto 20Mbps' I am paying for should be sufficient. However sometimes if I try to watch BBC i-player on maximum resolution through my PS3 it stops and loads every few seconds. I know streaming high resolution video is fairly demanding, but not that demanding, I am not doing anything else at the same time so I think 6-7Mbps should be plenty. This only happens sometimes, but if I am trying to watch a film around 08:00pm on a 'school night' it happens more often than not.
If I drop the resolution it normally settles down, so I guess I am right on the edge of what it can handle, and I have a sort of 'work around'. But I am paying for the top level of broadband BT offer (they haven't put fibre optic in my exchange yet) and have the top level of kit BT supply, and I am not asking for the moon on a stick, just BBC i-player on top resolution.
I am normally connecting the PS3 wirelessly but I always have 100% wireless signal when I check on the PS3, the Hub and PS3 are less than 3m apart, in the same room, with nothing between them and no kit that could be causing interference (except for the Plasma TV near the PS3, but it wouldn't be much use if it wasn't connected to a TV!) and a couple of times I have had the same problem when I have connected them through an ethernet cable to check. I have seen a few bits of guidance saying try a differnt channel, but I think the Hub 3 does this for you automatically.
I think sometimes when you stream video it takes a few seconds for BT to realise that you need more bandwidth and open your pipe up a bit - I am used to the video pausing and buffering a few times in the first minute then settling down - but this can go on for a whole hour.
Please could someone step me through the diagnostics I should do as a first step. I don't know much about routers but I am prepared to go in a play with settings if someone who knows what they are doing will hold my virtual hand.

TechCrunch posted a solution today that applies to this problem, I think.
    Go to: https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Click your old iPhone and "unregister" it.

    Hello All,
I got BT Infinity upto 80mb installed last Friday (went great, was told could only get 56mb, but i can download at 76mb)
when I goto http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ i am not able to run the speed test (the ADSL & Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) Diagnostics)
I enter my phone number, and it starts the test
It runs Test 1 and gets stuck on the "Upstream speed for:Test 1, at 100%"
it will just sit their for a age, then come up with site is busy.
    any ideas?

    EDIT:
this is what comes on the screen
The system is currently busy. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider

  • The Delete Speed Test for Pages 2

    Hello Pages fans,
“Speed” is a subjective term, so I wonder what people will find if they do this test:
Paste a phrase such as “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’s back. ” ten times to make a dummy paragraph. Put the cursor at the end of the paragraph and press and hold the delete key and count the seconds it takes to delete back through the the entire paragraph, letter by letter. (This will depend on the key repeat rate you set in System Preferences.)
If I delete a particular paragraph this way using Pages 2, when viewing the document in narrow format (i.e. viewing “fit page”) it takes about 22 seconds. If I view “fit width” and stretch the width across my 23-inch cinema display the same task takes about 101 seconds.
Using Pages 1 it takes about 22 seconds (“fit page”) or about 27 seconds (“fit width”). Not as bad.
I have tried every single fix proposed in this discussion forum to speed up Pages - to no avail. I am using a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz with 1GB RAM, a 23-inch display, 10.4.5 and the very latest updates. I have no other problems whatsoever in any other applications.
Incidentally, In Word 2004 the same exact test takes about 17 seconds no matter what (whether viewed at 10%, 500% or anything in between).
Trust me- I don’t actually sit around deleting paragraphs like this all day, but I do notice a very annoying typing lag. I’ve basically given up on Pages as a serious writing tool because of this typing lag / speed issue and gone back to Word. Pages 1 works fine and served my purposes for a year, but what future does the Pages application have if version 2 performs so poorly?
Do those who report having blazing fast Pages 2 performance experience this problem with this test?
Yes, this is a dreadfully boring test! But at least it’s not subjective and it’s not as iffy as watching the system monitor percentages jumping around.
Thanks in advance for any responses.
various macs...   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

True, MMINSO, I can just go use some other word processor. (Thanks for the tip.) I'm sorry to laugh at your suggestion but you entirely missed the point of my keyboard input test when you told me to just delete the whole paragraph at once.
Ee gads... we could start a flame war over this! Can anyone think of a better, more reliable speed test to measure how Pages handles keyboard input?
When I type text while viewing a document at full width across my screen, the typing is much slower than when I view the document tiny size. The typing lags. By "lags" I mean that the keyboard input is behind what I am typing. I devised a mind-numbingly simple little keyboard input test to replicate this problem perfectly. Again: This test directly replicates the type of keyboard input slowdown problem I encounter while doing normal typing. So it's certainly relevant, and it's also measurable and replicable.
Naturally, it's not the actual number of seconds that counts, it's whether any given keyboard input task slows down when we do it viewing at different widths. The keyboard input rate changes, you see.
I had hoped that someone would verify whether they experience the same lag in typing under the same conditions. In other postings, others have simply described the problem as "infuriating" and dropped Pages entirely. I don't think that's very useful. I was trying to be a bit more scientific about it in the hopes that it might actually be helpful.
Maybe there's a better way to accurately demonstrate keyboard input lags in Pages?
Maybe my machine is the only one experiencing any slowness.

  • Slow Speed Tests

Hay everyone I have an AirPort extreeme located in my front room about 15 feet from my bedroom. In the bedroom I have an iMac 27" mid-2011 model. I have been running speed tests from speedtest.net and have been getting very slow download rates, any where betwee 1.4 and 5.0 mbps. I pay for a 25 mbps speed. I have full signal strength everywhere in the house the speed is just terrible. Does anyone know how I can increses the speed of that computer. I have changed the channel to one that is not used as much in my area, as I looked at iStumbler. Also if I sit in the room next to the router I get 10 - 15 mbps. Any help would be amazing. Thanks.
PS I also have an AirPort express set to extend the network in the bedroom where I am having the slow speed.

I'm not able to provide a solution though I too find that the AE is not as fast as it is supposed to be. At one time I had a Belkin Wireless and an ADSL connection that topped out at 1.5MB/sec. Now I have a 50MB/sec internet connection and honestly, I have seen an increase in my speed over wireless but the Belkin really seemed quite zippy! I play World of Warcraft and I remember someone saying to me that AE or our Macs have Firewalls set-up that we don't know about or "something" that limits the speeds of the connections - which PCs and non-Apple products do not. Constantly see when downloading new patches from WOW, messages that I am behind a firewall - when I do not have firewall set on the AE nor on my Mac...
