Interface freezing issues and hard drive replacement

Hi, I have an Imac. It was getting slow and kept getting a long time lag on typing etc. So I bought snow leopard, backed up and wiped and reinstalled the lot. Then it started freezing - from moment one (literally). I could move my mouse and stuff was still running but I couldn't click on anything or select anything or get any response at all. Sometimes it would "white out". Only solution was forced reboot.
So I called apple, rand disk utility, kept showing disk errors - file 334576 should be file 334575 etc. Fixed them - they came back after each freeze. So they said its a hardware error.
Took it to shop. They reinstalled and no errors showed in the tests - but then it kept freezing when they tried to use it. Eventually they settled on a hard drive error - fitted a new one (money paid), it didn't freeze in 48 hours of tests and use. They said that if it keeps freezing it must be an intermittent motherboard problem. TBH I'm not convinced because, though it was slow before SNOW, it wasn't freezing!
Anyway, I took it home, put my stuff back on, was fine -
next day, froze twice in 2 mins - once, rebooted, then again, froze instantly before dock had fully popped up! (It seems to freeze in movement a lot - like task switching or dock popping etc).
It was then that I stumbled upon this term online "interface freezing issues" which seems to have been an initial issue with the imac, and there were some early posts about snow too. The problem is exact, if you minus this hard drive error issue, which MAY have been separate problem (cause by shorts caused by excessive cat hair inside computer).
I have read that external drives etc can be a cause, but not heard usb mentioned, only flywire - I have a dual USB port external drive for time machine. But really, this freezing is entirely since snow.
Can I solve this problem?
Do apple acknowledge this problem?
SHould I uninstall it and ask for my money back?
I would like solid, conclusive answers if possible - from people with direct experience. I work online and am also a writer - i am BEYOND dependant on this mac (especially as my partner is seriously ill and I am the sole income just now).
thankyou for reading
Anna
Anyway - ran disk utility - but no errors this time. Which is good.

As for the taking apart part. I'm not too worried. I've read quite a bit on the subject and watched a couple youtube videos. Also, i've taken a iBook G4 apart to it's core to replace that hard drive and did it without a hitch.
I'm a little unsure about the interface for the Optical Drive. From what i've read the HD is a SATA connection. While, the Optical Drive connection is IDE. Is that normal for one computer to have both?
I found two drives both around $100 for each. One is SATA the other is IDE.
SATA

IDE

Also, the HD from Newegg that I posted above, runs at 3GB/s. I've remember reading somewhere that my iMac will only run the drive at 1.5GB/s. Is that true?

  • Satellite L50D - Boot issues after Hard Drive replacement

I have just upgraded my hard drive from the pathetic 5400 crod they supply to an SSHD@7200rpm but now have a major issue.
I initially imaged the os from the old hard drive back to the new drive and have had chronic boot issues (1 in 3-4 boot attempts succeed else it fails at any point (often at the Toshiba startup screen)).
I've reinstalled from a plain clean Win 8.1 ENT disc (trying to avoid the bloatware) and this has the exact same issue and was what I used to format the laptop fine with previously and worked previously.
I've tried reformatting and reinstalling (deleting ALL partitions each attempt) in CSM, UEFI non secure and UEFI secure. CSM is a straight never works no go and both UEFI methods have the exact same outcome.
I've tried with the original restore discs and it seems to work (haven't had time to fully test) but I don't want the bloatware and this should not matter since if I were a customer who forgot to make the restore discs (happens too often) and just had to have a failed or killed hard drive replaced the laptop would now be a door stop.
This seems as bad as Apple for locking people in :/.
So I'd appreciate ideas from people please, I'm not sure if there is a prep program that is supposed to be run over a new drive like PS3's etc (I doubt it) but this is driving me up the wall and will be the last time I consider Toshiba as anything other than a joke if there is no fix.
I've had to replace hard drives a few times in my previous Toshiba laptops and had none of this crod, it has something to do with the UEFI which seems more of a nuisance than assistance at the moment.
    TIA.

    Hi
In my opinion you should check firstly if this booting issue is related to the new installed HDD or new installed system.
You said that the notebook fails to boot often at the Toshiba splash screen.
The splash screen appears while POST (power on self test) procedure. During this test, the hardware will be checked.
Im wondering if the hybrid SSD/HDD isnt recognized by BIOS during this particular step.
From my point of few this might be the reason why the system cannot be booted up.
    Another important note:
The Win 8.1 requires enable secure boot as well as the UEFI boot mode.
Therefore you should enable both options in BIOS.
Last but not least check if you are using latest BIOS version as well as latest firmware for hybrid SSD/HDD

  • Major Issues after Hard Drive Replacement

I recently upgraded to a 250 GB Internal Hard Drive for my old 1Ghz eMac. After spending a considerable amount of time getting to the old drive, removing it and then replacing the unit, I was dismayed when I turned it on and no power seemed to be getting to the fan or the optical drive. I was going to boot from an OS X disk to format the hard drive but without the power, this was impossible. Of course, I took everything apart again, checked my connection and same result. The eMac would power on and go automatically to the little folder/question mark icon. Still the fan was not moving nor was power feeding to the optical drive. I opened up another eMac and compared it with the one I was working on and everything was hooked up the same way.
So I then decided to try to install the new hard drive into the other eMac. When I powered up, I got exactly the same result. No power to the fan or the optical drive. I'm at a loss for what could be wrong. I'm certainly no expert and the possibility of my doing something wrong is certainly there, but I've done as much homework as I can dig up on my issues and I can't find out what could be causing this problem.
Any help would be MOST appreciated. (I also reset the PRAM hoping it would provide a quick fix.) Nope...

    mat,
And when I plug it in I can hear a quiet buzzing/whining noise, and the power button doesnt seem to do anything
    Yah that doesn't seem right.
Ive tested the power on switch and its ok
    How was that done?
As soon as I press the PRAM reset switch the power supply noise changes from a random whine to a fix pitch whine for about 5 secs or until I press the power on switch
That's also not right. You're trying to reset the "PRAM" actually called the PMU in this machine while it's active and that's for sure not right.
I can make the same offer to you as I did to TN.

    Hi,
You are not restricted in any way to a particular HDD manufacturer, so for example, the drive on the link below is an of one that would be fine for your notebook.
    500Gb Hard Drive
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 47 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Once done, simply use your Recovery DVDs to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive.
If you don't have your Recovery Discs, you can order a replacement set using the link below.

I have a MacBook 2.1, Intel Core2 Duo Processor, 1.5 GB RAM and am thinking of adding more RAM and changing out the Hard Drive to a bigger size.  Can anyone tell me the max RAM that can be installed and the Max Hard drive size?

These are good online stores for Mac compatible RAM
OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/ - They offer Mac tested RAM at very good prices.
Crucial Memory http://www.crucial.com/ - good place to buy RAM from all over the world. They also have an excellent memory selector that allows you to choose memory based on your computer's model
Data Memory Systems http://www.datamemorysystems.com/apple-memory.asp - another good, cheap place to buying RAM if you live in the U.S.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=pd_cp_pc_0
You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/faq/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-3-g b-memory-limitation-details.html
OWC tests have found that there is a slight speed increase with having two 2gb sticks in rather than one 1gb and one 2gb. Your model is in the gray lines at the bottom of the graph. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Memory_Benchmark/Apple_MacBook/

  • Disk Utility and Hard Drive replacement on MacBook.

I am preparing to upgrade the hard drive on my MacBook and I was reading this document http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inch_HardDriveDIY.pdf and a the end after installing the hard drive and preparing to install Mac OS X the directions state the following: "Leave the Disk Utility application open, and restore the backed up files from the image you created before removing the hard drive.". I think that this would be a much quicker option then having to re install every application and copy over back up user data. My question is how do I create an image of the contents of the hard drive to use once I upgrade the drive?

I'd just clone (make a complete bootable backup) the internal to a backup external drive, swap out the internal, then clone back. That way you wouldn't have to do any installations.
To backup (clone) your main drive, you can use the donationware CarbonCopy Cloner @ http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html , or the shareware SuperDuper @ http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html , or the freeware IBackup @ http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/index.html, or the Restore function of Disk Utility included in OS X.

  • Wind Top AE2211G: panel technology and hard drive replacement?

I'm thinking of buying the Wind Top AE2211G, but I can't find any information about the following two things that are important to me:
What panel technology is used for the monitor? TN, MVA, IPS?
Is the hard drive easily replaceable by myself in case it dies? Can the case be opened easily without losing the warranty?

  • GS60 - Mousepad freezing/crashing and hard drive clicking issue

    Hello all!
I'm going to try to put in as much detail as possible, hopefully some kind person here will know what I can do to troubleshoot these issues
I bought an MSI GS60 2PC Ghost notebook a month or two ago and I've been noticing some strange issues.
Occasionally during use, my mousepad will freeze for around 2 seconds and then start back up. What i mean by this is that i'll be swiping my finger and then the cursor will just stop moving for 2 seconds mid-swipe. This seems to happen fairly randomly multiple times a day.
The most annoying part is that the first time it happens after a fresh restart, the mouse seems to lose precision. Meaning that after the first freeze, if i do a quick swipe and stop, the cursor will lag behind a bit and fully stop movement noticeably after I stop moving my finger. It happened while I typed this.
    >"REINSTALL YOUR MOUSEPAD DRIVER"
I did, it started happening again. Here's the thing. If I'm also playing music while using the laptop and mousepad, any music I'm playing will temporarily also slow down/ get distorted during that 2 second freeze.
Eventually, the mousepad will just crash altogether and I'll have to restart to get it to work again.
    >"ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE NOT HITING THE MACRO TO DISABLE THE MOUSEPAD"
I'm sure. The music issue leads me to think it might be something else, not the mousepad driver. Although I should note this doesn't happen if i connect a USB mouse and use that instead.
I'm also hearing a weird clicking noise every so often. It seems to come from the bottom right hand side of the laptop when facing the keyboard top-down. Like, to the right of the mousepad. Could it be the HDD? It doesn't really bother me too much but it's pretty loud and people in class will often turn around thinking i'm taking a picture of them. It just happened as I typed this as well.
I've tried recording these things but they never happen with the camera rolling.
Anyone have any ideas? I'll shower you with free Steam games if the help you provide ends up fixing the problem.
    Thanks in advance

Turn on the task manager and check if the CPU or HDD is having a high usage while the cursor freeze happens.
    Try this:
Go to Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Power options> change plan settings(choose the one you're using)> Change advance power settings> Processor power management> set 98%, 99% of on both on battery and plugged in.
Clicking sound for HDD is normal if the read and write head is working.
You can run the HD Tune's s.m.a.r.t test and see if there is anything wrong with the HDD, if not, then I think you don't really need to worry about the sound.

  • After i had my hard drive replaced, i've gone to get my old emails and am unable to find them on time machine. The file com.apple.mail.plist isn't there. HELP!

Pretty sure this will be some sort of user error, but i'm lost.
I had to have my hard drive replaced, so before taking it to the genius bar, i backed up using time machine. I'd had issues with trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner previously so had formatted the external drive before doing time machine. TM seemed to work fine and copied what looked to be everything. Once i'd got the new hard drive in and went to restore everything, when i looked for the file i need to get to apparently get my mails back (Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist) it's not there.
Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.
    J

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • Can I get a data recovery from Apple if my iMac was in the hard drive replacement programme and I wasn't notified about it?

Basically my iMac just crashed and I searched on Google for replacing my hard drive and came across the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program at http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/
Which is that Apple is asking all 2009 - 2011 iMac users to return their iMac for a free hard drive replacement because it currently has a fault in it. After entering in my serial number, I see that my iMac is elegible for a replacement.
I did register my iMac with Apple, but I didn't receive any email about this program and I lost all my recent data because of the faulty hard drive. I never had an issue before with the drive so this just happened out of the blue.
Is it possible to get a free data recovery from Apple for this? I find that it was a lack of communication that I lost most of my data.

I completely understand that it's my responsibility to back up my data but I have it set to every 2nd month, not on a weekly or daily basis to back up the data.
Apple might not be in data recovery business but could they not acquire a third party to do this?
    This is what happened:
It was on sleep overnight and when I tried waking it, it was lagging badly. So I shut it down and restarted it. I phoned into techincal support to find out whats wrong, but they were giving me advice to reset the params etc. But i think it made it worse because it didnt want to get passed the white start up screen.
So I phoned back to ask if it's a usual issue with my version of iMac and the man replied that it isn't common and that I should run the disk utility to check the hard drives health.
I installed Mountain Lion on a USB and started the disk utility. Then it highlighted in red that it's a hardware fault and cannot be repaired by the disk utility. Therefore the hard drive has a serious fault with it.
That's when I Google'd for a replacement drive and came across the program. The techincal guy didn't even tell me about it or anything.
If I knew about this sooner, I would have taken it in for a replacement.

USB printers and Bonjour-enabled network printers
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
    1. Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
    2. Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
    3. Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
    4. Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
    5. Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
    1. Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
    2. If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
    3. Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • I just had the seagate hard drive replaced and the fan is running loud

I just had the seagate hard drive replaced and the fan is running loud

Is your iMac a late 2009 or newer model? Did Apple do the replacement or someone else? There is a documented issue where Apple changed the hard drive heat sensor from outside the drive to inside. If you install a replacement hard drive in a late 2009 or newer iMac that's not an Apple-sourced drive, two things happen ... the fan runs like crazy and the Apple hardware test doesn't work properly.
You can read these OWCS blogs here and here on it.

  • Taking out and replacing memory and hard drive.

Hey so I want to get a macbook pro 13 in. and I want to upgrade it by putting in more memory and a better hard drive, but I want to buy parts from a different site because it is so much cheaper. Is it easy to take out and replace the memory and hard drive of a macbook pro?

Just make sure the RAM you're buying is brand name and match the specs of your macbook.
Getting cheaper RAM modules sometimes cause issues with the way your Macbook peforms.  Learned that lesson when I decided to buy Kingston Value RAM.  Had nothing but trouble.
Stick with brands like Crucial ( which I use ), Corsair, Mushkin, Kingston (non value) and from OWC.
As for the hard drive, stay away from Western Digital Blue edition, some macbooks have issues with them.
Also make sure you buy an external USB enclosure so you can clone your drive before you intall it and install your old drive in the USB enclosure and use it as your backup drive.
If you're technically capable, it quite easy swapping out the RAM and Hard Drive.
Do the clone first before you do anything else.  That way, when you're done the clone, you just have to open up your macbook once to do the swap.
Good luck and hope everything goes smoothly for you.
Post back if you need a hand or have any questions.
