You should buy MS Office for Mac 2011. It is the only app that is fully compatible with PC MS Office, Word, Excel and the like.

FrameMaker does not work like Word. The two products have some features that overlap, agreed, but each has its own unique way of conducting itself.
If you go between FrameMaker to Word often, consider a third-party filter. Mif2Go (
http://www.omsys.com) and Filtrix (
http://www.blueberry.com) are two that others have praised. I have not used either.
If problems between MS Word and FrameMaker persist, consider removing all graphics before conversion. Reimport them later by reference.
Consider converting tables in Word to tab-delimited text before importing them into FrameMaker. Convert them back to a table after the import.
Consider getting rid of headers, footers, table of contents, and index, from Word before importing into FrameMaker--although the TOC and index might come in fine if the planets are aligned in your favor.
The FrameMaker MS Word and RTF import filters take a looooong time. This time gets especially long if you have some complexities in the source file. Often, Windows inaccurately reports the program as "not responding" when, in fact, the import is still on going. Give the filter a chance, an hour or so. Make a five-course lunch or otherwise occupy yourself, just to give the import filter a chance.

The 'Winmail.dat' problem has been extensively covered in these forums, I would search for that (a Google search works well) and unfortunately I have not seen the pdf print problem before, but assuming the software is current and functions normally (other than the pdf print problem) I have no suggestion other than the obvious (but time consuming) re-installation of Office.

My Microsoft Word program crashes often!

Ever since I updated to Lion, my microsoft word program crashes, often! More than often and as a PhD student this is becoming incredibly annoying. What Can I do to fix this problem? Do I need to up grade my writing programs, i.e. MS Word and Endnote?

Yosemite compatibility with microsoft word 2008

I had held off on upgrading to Mavericks because of the issues surrounding the compatibility with Microsoft Word 2008. I am a student and need to use Word to do my work as well as having all of my current documents, including my thesis, in 2008 format. I don't want to risk losing the information or the ability to do my work and I was wondering if there is any information about whether the issue of compatibility with this version had been fixed. I don't have the means to buy a new version of Microsoft but would very much like to be able to update my system since I am still using Mountain Lion.

There has been a better and free alternative to old versions of MS Word and MS Office since forever. Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 is the latest version of a free and complete All-In-One document processor, spreadsheet, drawing, presentation, database, & formula software, found here: http://www.openoffice.org
It also reads, writes and translates MS Word, saves in many formats, and is pretty easy to use. It's entirely modern and compatible with all the latest Mac operating systems. Good luck.

I had too many of these that I had to convert to a modern format. It isn't easy or consistent but one of these normally works:
1. Open up Word and use the File/Open command rather than just double clicking on the file. Why does this sometimes work? I don't know! Save in docx format.
2. Try opening the files in Office 2010 on a Windows machine. Again, immediately save as a docx file. This works more often than the advice above.
3. Download the free LibreOffice and try opening it there. There will be some format problems but easily fixed. Once again, save in docx format.
4. Breakdown and look for a dedicated format converter.

Pages does not run on Windows.
Word cannot open a Pages file.
If you want someone without pages to be able to open your attachment, you will have to send it in a format openable on the recipient's computer.
If the recipient needs only to read the document, the most universal format is pdf. To send a pdf copy of your file, press command-P to open the Print dialogue, then click the PDF button and choose email PDF. This will open a new message in your default email client and attach the pdf file to that message.
If the recipient needs to be able to edit/change your document, and has MS Word, then either Save a copy as a Word file or go File > Export and choose Word as the file format for the export.
Be aware that MS Word does not support all features of Pages (and vice versa), and that formatting of the document may be affected by font substitution if you use fonts that are not available on the recipient's machine.

This laptop has original Microsoft word & excel provided by Mac when purchased and is legal copy.
Do I understand you bought a Mac and it came with Microsoft Office? I could be wrong, but I wasn't aware that was an option. Or am I not parsing that sentence correctly and you bought a Mac and bought a legal copy of Office to install on it? In which case, never mind.

Once you have the document how you want it, select Export from the File menu. Click on Word at the top of the dialog box that pops up, and click Next. Then it will bring up a standard save dialog and when you click Save it will save a Word document.

Not sure if any of the alternatives to Office (word) for Mac are near the feature set you require.

Lost Firefox replaced with Microsoft Word when updating Firefox

I was offered a chance to update Firefox - it said update now or later. Stupidly I said now and since then I have problems. My start button has lost the internet connection and has been replaced with Microsoft Word. I cannot get my old bookmarks and Firefox back and it has all been replaced with Microsoft Word which I hate. Please help.

Does this mean it only works for pages etc... or do i have to activate it somehow? If it is only for pages then this ***** and should be better advertised!!!

Each application will need to be updated to work with Versions, Full Screen, and other Lion-specific features.
