Interference issues

I have set up a WRT54G and WAP54G as a repeater (as per linksys answer 231 and 4200).  These units are 1300 feet apart.  I am using identical circular polarizing antennas on one of the antenna connections to the units.
I have only a few trees within the line of sight which is why I used circular polarizing antennas.  There is also one residence between the antennas.  The straight line path between the antenna is about 6 feet over the residence.  I believe I have an interference issue.
I have experience great connectivity at times, but have no connection at other times. I have experimented with observing the pings between the units and at times will seldom miss a ping.  At other times, I cannot get a ping to hit.  I have tried various channels without any different success.
I do not know whether the neighbor is creating an interference or whether the antennas may pick up other signals in the background.  I also have wireless broadband service which their radios are close to similar antenna alignment, but I would think they operate at 5 mgH and if they interfered, then it would be continuous interference.  There are some other businesses located at some distance behind my antennas.  I don't think it is the trees, as I have great connections that last for long periods of time.  There is no set pattern to when I have connections. Sometimes, I connect during daylight hours and evening hours, but generally early morning hours (12am-8 am) are the best.
Any suggestions?

Try changing the wireless settings on the router
channel - either 1 or 11
beacon interval - 50
fragmentation and RTS threshold - 2304
also ensure that both the devices have latest firmware....

  • 8900 Bluetooth interference issue

I have an 8900 which I use with a Samsung A2DP bluetooth headset.
There appears to be a serious interference issue with the phone when connected to the headset (or any headset for that matter) which results in the audio cutting out for extended periods of time.
I have tried my headset on another device, another identical headset on my 8900 and had the headset replaced.
Interestingly, the interference appears to be influenced by my physical location - for e.g., I get NO interference when I am in the car, extreme interference when walking from the carpark building to my office and mild interference at home, which increases when I go out to the letterbox.
On another device, the headset experiences absolutely no noticeable interference what-so-ever.
    I am running:
    Platform: 4.2.0.108
App Version: 4.6.1.231 (353) which is a partner release of the firmware AFAIK. The issue existed before upgrading also.
My main issue is that the device is an Alliance sourced item and will not be repaired/replaced by the local service agent (0044 IMEI) - so I am looking for any assistance on software/firmware that will help overcome this issue.
    Cheers, Jeff

I have a similar issue, When I'm listening to music I will get the cutting out on my bluetooth headset. It doesn't cut out any other time. I called T-Mobile to see if they could help. The rep called Blackberry support (while I was holding) who assured her that this was an issue with the headset not the phone. I've had my 8900 for about 3 weeks. The first couple of days using the headset it seemed to work fine. I didn't use it for almost 2 weeks then when I began using it (the headset) again it was doing this cutting out.
This cutting out may not even be related to the original post here but maybe we can figure something out.

  • Major interference issue.

Whenever I am trying to record audio, or play audio through anything other than a passive output, I get a high pitched buzzing/popping sound. I set about investigating what in my room was causing the noise using a microphone, and whenever the microphone was placed in the vicinity of my trackpad, the microphone's induction coil went nuts and starting picking up the very same interference that I was picking up when trying to record.
I can guarantee it was only the trackpad, because it only happened when the microphone was within a centimetre of it, and no matter where the laptop was placed. Is there any way I can temporarily cut off the power to my trackpad to stop this interference problem while trying to record? (I have tried using the disable switch above the trackpad, it does not affect the interference.)

    Hi there,
I bought a brand new Dv7 the other day that is a bit higher spec than yours but I have a similar DPC Latency issue that causes pauses in audio and freezes in the system. I downloaded a DPC latency checker and began the process of narrowing down the the culprit causing the latency. Turns out my WiFI card (Ralink RT5390) was the culprit as when I disabled the adapter in device manger my DPC Latency returned to normal levels.
After ding a little bit of searching I found that supposed solution is to download the latest drivers for the WiFI adapter as well as the latest BIOS update and just for safet's sake the latest audio driver too. I did this and I had no real change. Before you blame the AC adapter maybe you should go through the same process. Perhaps look at your power management settings and see if the wireless card is disabled when the machine is not plugged in? As that would make sense with my issue.
It is of course possible that your AC Adapter is causing your issue but mine is definitely coming from the WiFi Adapter.
Wis I could be of more help.

  • Possibly unique interference issue. Is TC the answer?

I'm sure there are some similar topics on this forum, but I feel I may have a slightly unique issue...
Let me start by saying I'm currently using an Airport Express, MacBook Pro 3.1, iPhone 4 and the new AppleTV. I, like many others, am having trouble with radio frequency interference. At night, I have a great wifi connection...during the day, however, I have no wifi and my Airport doesn't even show up in Airport Utility.
I'm pretty sure I've pinpointed my problem. My apartment is directly above a hobby store that specializes in radio controlled toy planes, trains and automobiles. Radio frequency overload.
I've moved my Airport around, messed around with different channels in Airport Utility and turned on interference robustness...still nothing.
I realize I may be utterly screwed, which bums me out because I'd absolutely LOVE to use my AppleTV during the day, especially for music, but I remain hopeful. The question is: does Time Capsule have a much stronger signal? Should I ditch my Express for that, or are there more things I could try?
PS: I don't want to layer my floor with aluminum foil!

The strength of the Time Capsule signal would be the same as the AirPort Express, but it would have the advantage of using both normal 2.4 GHz wireless and 5 GHz wireless.
There are very few wireless networks using the 5 GHz band, so that might be a possibility for you to consider. Newer computers would connect at 5 GHz, but the iPhone would not, so you would have to use the normal 2.4 GHz network for those connections.
If you have a newer "n" AirPort Express that supports 5 GHz, you could try that as an experiment to see if it helps...and also check to see how many of your other devices can connect at 5 GHz.
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Change the Radio Mode to 802.11n only 5 GHz
    Update to save settings
You can always return to the previous setting by going back in.

  • Help me with an interference issue?

    Here is my network:
Motorola modem -> Airport Extreme (with external HD) -> 2 MacBooks, 2 iPhones, AppleTV, Sony Bluray.
I live in a suburban neighborhood with few homes near-by, with only three other wifi networks showing up besides my own. My modem and Extreme are in the den in the back of my house. Everything is fine when in the den or back of the house, however when I get upstairs or on my front porch my internet dies. I still have ALL the bars on my Macbook's wifi display so signal strength and interference is not the issue.
I have run Apple's (deeply hidden) Wi-Fi Diagnostics app (found via: http://goo.gl/THkZU) and found the signal-to-noise ratio changes dramatically moving from den to front room to front porch. Here is a screen cap of the readout:
Far-right is in the back den, then kitchen, then front living room, then finally front porch is on the far-left.
How can I find out more information and remedy this problem?

Yes, that hidden tool is a good one to use. What you basically have is the means to calculate the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) which is a good indicator of signal quality.
SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)
In addition to the Wi-Fi Diagnostics app, you can also find the Signal and Noises values using System Profiler on your Mac laptop.
ref: Click on the Apple icon on the menu bar > About This Mac > More Info... > Contents > Network > AirPort > Interfaces > en1 > Current Network Information > Find your wireless network > Signal / Noise. In addition, you can find the Transmit Rate here as well.
These values should be negative numbers. For example, mine currently read: -67 dBm / -95 dBm, with a transmit rate of 27 (Mbps). Plugging in these numbers yield: SNR = -67 - (-95) = 28. My Mac Mini is about four rooms away from my AEBS with about five walls between them. As you can see, the signal is still quite useable ... but the bandwidth is minimal, especially for streaming.
The following is a guidline for SNR values:
    SNR Guideline
    40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
What you will want to do (and have pretty much have already done) is to gather the Signal and Noise values at each point in the house where you would want to access the wireless network ... and then, calculate the SNR resultant. Anywhere where the SNR is 25+dB, you can expect decent wireless performance.
To improve SNR at any particular location may require reconfiguring your wireless network into either an extended or roaming network and would require additional base stations to do so.

We have a 2504 WLC, recently past few weeks all the WiFi clients are facing frequent WiFi disconnectivity issue.
I think you're "barking at the wrong tree".  Co-channel interference won't cause widespread clients disconnection issues.
What kind of clients are getting this issue?  Computers?  Smartphones?  Tablets?
    What's your encryption/authentication settings?
Have you tried running a debug on the clients during disconnection and reconnection?

  • Airport Interference Issues

We have recently installed Airport Express with Airtunes for our imac. We are up and running in the room where the modem and Airport is, but we do not seem to be able to connect in any other room (we live in an old double brick house). We assume the interference through the brick is too great - is there any solutions to this issue? Many thanks.

    Hi Livandhenry,
    Any solid structure will attenuate wireless signal. Therefore, there is only two options to maximize wireless coverage;
    - try to move the airport express to a new location that will more central to where you want to use it. (for exemple, if in your imac's room you have a full signal and a too low signal in another room, try to locate the ae in the middle)
    - apple base station can also relay each other; a more expensive solution, you can have multiple ae that can relay each other.
    hope this may help, regards,

  • Bizarre TV Signal / Interference issue

Before i start let me just state, I am aware of how ridiculous this post sounds.
I have had a BT Vision+ box for about 9 months now. Three months ago I got a new mobile phone and ever since the TV signal and audio breaks up every time I touch my mobile phone when i'm in the living room. My wife has the exact same phone but on a different network and doesnt experience the same.
I thought it was my TV aerial at first, had this replaced and still experience the same. I've tried every thing i can think of on my phone and the only solutions I've found are switching it off, airplane mode or leaving it in another room.
    Any thoughts / suggestions?
My phone is an iPhone 5S on O2.
    Kind regards,
    Richard

    EkilErif
When you say picture breaks up when you touch your phone, do you mean when you pick it up or when you press the home button? If it occurs when you pick it up that indicates a hardware fault with the phone.
If it occurs when you press the home button, be aware iPhones send lots of network traffic as soon as you wake them up.
Does it occur on Freeview channels or on multicast Extra TV channels or both?
It would be useful to know whether it is a WiFi or 3G issue. Does the problem still occur if you:
    1. Turn WiFi off but leave 3G Mobile Data on?
    2. Turn 3G Mobile Data off but leave WiFi On?
The Mobile Data setting is under Settings -> Mobile in iOS 7.
If it occurs when WiFi is turned on but Mobile Data off, then let us know which Home Hub you have and what your network set up looks like. Is the box connected directly to the Home Hub and do you have any other WiFi routers in your home?

  • Aurvana X-Fi headphone interference issues

    Hi,
I bought a pair of Aurvana X-Fi headphones a few months ago. There's nothing to say about its qualities but I have noticed a rather annoying problem about it. It is very sensitive to nearby cell phone radio activity, which causes those well known bleep bleep bleep sounds to erupt out of my headphones, more or less covering the music depending on the phone's range. I've noticed that the X-Fis picks up the signal up to approximatively one meter around which problematic when using public transportation on rush hour for example. It can easily transform your nice noise canceled music experience into a bleep bleep bleeeeep concerto nightmare
It seems there is some shielding issues, which not very understandable considering the price and relatively high end range of the product.

    okay
just sad i rly want a 2e version of the product!

  • Very strange interference issue

Wondering if anyone has any troubleshooting ideas for this one. Firstly there is nothing wrong with my router. What happens is this: I have a PC located in an observatory about 100 feet from the router. Any time I connect a device to the wireless adaptor to boost reception that has a low loss cable such as a cantenna or one of those panel shaped receptors, the computer shuts down spontaneously. It does NOT do this when I bring the PC into the house and connect those devices in the house. The weird thing is that I tried another machine out in the observatory and it seemed to work fine, so I don't understand why one machine would work and the other not, yet the machine that shuts down does not shut down when it is in the house. I had the PC checked by 2 places. There is nothing wrong with the hardware on the PC or the wireless card. I'm using windows XP pro on an AMD sempron 3400. I tried all the troubleshooting steps related to anything connected to the PC, power supply etc. One thing you should know is that the PC connected perfectly fine for 2 years until this past Spring! No idea what to look at now. Any help appreciated.

Well right now I can't think of anything that would cause that symptom.  Hopefully someone else will chime in here, but just to make sure lets do the following so we can get a base point.
First, reload or upgrade the drivers on your wireless adapter card.  Uninstall it or delete and reboot computer just so they get reinstalled from scratch.  Next, hard reset the router by pressing and holding the reset button for 30 seconds and release.  Wait 30 seconds and power cycle.  Now reconfigure from scratch.
If this does not work upgrade the routers firmware or reflash with the current firmware.  Now let's try again.

  • Firewire interference issue

    Hi everyone,
I have a RME Fireface 800 audio interface which is hooked directly to the back of my macpro's fw 800 port.
I also have a Sony DVMC-DA2 media converter, which uses fw 400.. If I hook both of these devices up together, the RME freaks out, lights start blinking and my macpro hangs. Once I turn off the RME, everything is fine, and my media converter functions properly in final cut pro...
I don't understand why this is happening since fw800 and fw400 are supposed to be separate buses... I've also tried using a firewire hub, but it doesn't seem to matter.. As soon as both devices are hooked up to the computer, they don't work properly.
Strangely, this worked 100% fine on my last powermac dual g5... Any suggestions on how I can get these two devices to play nicely together?
    -patrick

No no no, shared on same controller.
FireWire cables don't really have the shielding either so there can be noise and cross-talk.
And of course now Mac Pros have only FW800.
I'd suggest investing in PCIe FW800 or 400 controller.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire usually has Aaxon, Sonnet and others.

  • Satellite C55-A-1R8 - Touchpad interference issue

    I have Satellite C55-A-1R8, using Windows 8.1.
The Synaptics touchpad has always given some unpredictable results, whatever setings I have used or cancelled.
For example, it suddeny loses the ability to receive a double click, even though the icon still has 'tap to click' ticked; when I do click it, the cursor flies off into the top right corner of the screen and is difficult to control again.
The buttons continue to work normally, though, But if I sleep or hibernate the computer things are normal again immediately it wakes.
Also, the pad often picks up and moves icons/files without double clicking. I installed the most recent Synaptics driver update, but no change.
However, I am told that the casework on this model is so thin that fingers resting on it below the keyboard can interfere with the touchpad commands, and am beginning to suspect that this might be the reason for some of the odd behaviour.
If it is, can I insulate it with anything to prevent this happening?

    Thanks for your interest.
Yes, I have varied the touch sensitivity and also the gesture options. And I suspected a problem from when the laptop was new, but I had moved up from XP to Windows 8.1, which I found very confusing for a long while.
And the machine itself feels very different from the firmer keys of my previous (HP) model which did not permit 'touchscreen-type' features on the touchpad.
For a long time I thought it was me! Then that it might be some kind of clash between the system software and one of the programs I had installed. And for a while it appeared to happen only when I was online; but a week away from any possible wifi connection was not entirely problem-free.
The trouble is that this cursor problem is completely unpredictable, and I can't induce it at will!
I tried insulating the casework with bubblewrap, had no repetition of the problem for over a week, then it started to happen again.
I think the factory settings might be the only way forward - at least I now have a better idea of how 8.1 works.

  • FieldPoint/DAQmx interference issue

This one is driving me crazy.  I have a system with a PC that has two Ethernet cards, one for the intranet and one for the test station I am developing.  The PC also has a USB-6212 DAQ module for data collection and digital I/O.   On my test station network, I have a FieldPoint and various other Ethernet-based devices.  I have set the test station NIC to the highest position in the list by selecting My Network Places -> Properties -> Advanced | Advanced Settings... and clicking the up arrow on my test station NIC per an article on this forum.
When I open my project, and run it, my shared variable reads fail showing the intranet IP address in the error box.  Well, I want the shared variables accessible on the test station IP address, which is 192.168.1.1.  So, in Project Explorer, I right click on My Computer, select Properties, set Specify Custom Address, and enter 192.168.1.1 into the address field.  When I do this, my DAQmx VIs stop working showing that the channels or tasks are for a device that does not exist.  What?  I right click on My Computer in Project Explorer, select New | NI-DAQmx Task, wait for DAQ Assistant to start, click on Generate Signals, Digital Output, Line Output and it reports that "No supported devices found".  If I uncheck the Specify Custom Address, save, restart LV, and try to make a task, it works fine.  This problem comes and goes and is very frustrating.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

  • I am quite fed up with Apple and my iMac - multiple issues

I've been a Windows user for years. I've suffered through all of the ups and downs of Windows over the years, mostly the downs. I have three Windows 7 computers, and quite frankly, both have performed quite beautifully, albeit without the polish of the Mac.
Earlier this year, I decided to buy an iMac for a few reasons. First, they are just so beautiful, and even if you are going to run Windows they are probably the best Windows computers out there. Second, I wanted to do more video editing and found the Windows tools weren't very good. I also wanted to run some karaoke software (kJams) that at the time was not available for Windows.
I was basically pleased with the iMac for a few months. However, there was one problem I could never solve: the wifi connection got lost periodically, even though I had made all of the system updates. I know this is a problem with the iMac, because my numerous Windows PCs and my two iPod toouches had no problem with a wifi connection. It appears from various posts here that this is indeed a problem many others have experienced since Snow Leopard's release, and as far as I can tell, despite many updates to the Airport software it has never been fixed by Apple. Strike 1.
A couple of weeks ago, my iMac started running slow for no reason I could identify. I don't have a lot of software installed on it, I didn't download anything pirated or questionable. I did install bootcamp according to Apple's instructions, and it worked fine (I wanted to run some Windows games). I tried doing all of the things that folks suggest when your computer is running slow - repairing permissions, running Onyx, etc. None of them seemed to do anything. I tried creating a new user, it had the same problem. I also noticed various other problems with the computer: it was slow to recognize a USB hard drive (and sometimes didn't recognize it at all), external hard drives would not appear in the time machine set up, and various other problems I can't quite recall. Overall, while presumably nothing serious should have been wrong with my computer, I decided I probably should simply reinstall OS X. Strike 2.
Now, quite frankly I would have been happy to simply reset the computer to its factory state. I would point out that nearly all Windows PCs come with a separate repair partition where it is very easy to do that with one click. I guess Apple is so confident in the reliability of its computers it doesn't think this is a useful feature. So, I had to install OS X using the DVD that came with the computer. It took quite a while to do this, and actually it wasn't at all clear to me that my settings would be kept (one would think that this is something the install screen would point out - Windows makes a quite clear distinction between a "clean install" and a re-install).
I was somewhat pleased when all of my settings were there. After the long process of reinstalling, I click on the "Accounts" setting I get a message saying that the Preferences application has quit unexpectedly -- clearly there are still problems. Quite irritating given that I just spent an hour trying to re-install the OS. I google around and again find others have had this problem, but unfortunately none of the proposed fixes I try seem to work. And my computer still seems to have other problems - it still doesn't recognize external drives very well. I will say that it seemed to be running a little faster though. Strike 3.
Anyway, I decide I need to do a full clean install. When I do that, things seem to be working better, although the mouse pointer is quite jerky - I'm thinking that maybe I need to just run software update to fix that. I start the software update - a nice 1gb download is required. Now ,the problem is that I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM WITH WIFI DISCONNECTIONS. So no matter how many times I start the download, I CAN"T FINISH IT. And Apple, in its infinite wisdom, HAS NOT WRITTEN A DOWNLOADER THAT IS SMART ENOUGH TO CONTINUE WHERE IT LEFT OFF. How hard is this to do, really? Do I now have to lug my iMac across the house to put it on a wired connection? I've already wasted hours trying to get this piece of junk working.
And the sad fact is, once I am done, I will have a very beautiful computer that can't hold an internet connection.
I have to give Apple kudos for the iMac hardware. It's great. But the software? It's fine as long as it works. But it doesn't always work - and when it doesn't, it actually at this point seems more buggy and difficult to repair than Windows. Is this the last Mac I'll ever buy? Probably. Quite frankly, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that Apple's best developers have moved on to more exciting pastures (iPhone for example). And given the number of unsolved issues posted on these forums (including the ones I mention here), it appears that Apple engineers are simply asleep at the switch.

Let me start by saying I don't use wireless so I haven't had to deal with it, and I assume you know your way around all the settings in your modem/switch and Windows 7.

And, sometimes just knowing what make of networking equipment (linksys, netgear, d-link, even Apple). USB ADSL or a USB wireless devices don't work with Macs. Checked for firmware update for the network devices?
    Changing from WEP to WPA
How do I change from WEP to WPA security, which I have been told is better. I'm sure it is simple but i cant find it.
These settings are in your wireless router, so you will have to consult the manual for how to access the administration page and change the wireless security settings. Once you have WPA or WPA2 enabled, you will need to reauthenticate your computer with the wireless network since you will have a new password. If you have problems with persistent password requests popping up, you will need to open the "Keychain Access" utility and remove all keychain entries associated with your wireless network and password.

Networking In networking utilities, the in-depth network troubleshooting and monitoring utility VisualRoute ($49.95) has been updated to fix a bug with the "whois" routine, and likewise the Wi-Fi hot spot finder AirRadar ($19.95) has also been updated with a small bug fix for the signal status not updating.
The network administration and security testing utility NetScan (free) has also been updated and now has a revamped interface and new features for port scanning as well as fixes for icon appearance and update-checking problems.

As for restore, it is different, won't be the same, but there are two ways to handle that on a Mac:
    Apple TimeMachine
Clone OS X: bootable (yes, you can boot from 2nd or 3rd hard drive) - SuperDuper ($29) is superb and I update the backup (15 minutes) before applying updates.
That way I have my previous system with all data, not just an image, all my data and going back in time.
    From another thread:
if you have issues when using an AirPort router, you've either got interference issues causing your problems or a system issue.
    whenever possible:
    1) Vist an Apple Store
    2) Try your machine on their network
    3) If the connection drops, make them fix it.
Reason being, I've tried and checked log after log and have never seen a connection drop inside an Apple Store.
My gut reaction would be interference but the easiest move may be to check it in an Apple Store if at all possible.

If you connect to the Internet or a network in several different ways (using AirPort or Ethernet, for example), you can change the order of the network port configurations your computer tries when connecting to the Internet or a network.
To change the priority of a network port configuration:
    1) Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
    2) Choose Set Service Order from the Actions pop-up menu.
    3) Drag a service, such as Ethernet, to the top of the list. When you try to connect, Mac OS X will try the port configuration at the top of the list.©
Tip: Any Network Device listed here that you'll never use for a Network Connection should be set to 'Inactive'.

  • Issues with cisco 1242 aironets

We are currently experiencing and issue with the 1242 AG Wireless Access Points. We have have them configured as 1 Root Access point and 3 Repeaters. The repeaters seem to be experiencing frequency interference issues. The Root AP is using antenna model 2506 and the repeaters 1728's.
What happens is when the repeaters are first started up, they see / communicate to the root access point fine, but within 5 minutes they stop communicating. If we manually set the channel to something different, they see each other for 5 - 10 minutes then eventually disappear and cannot be ping'd or seen with a sh cdp nei.
We have tried various combinations of settings so far. Have tried channel 1 - 13 and the least conjested frequency mode. It usually settles on channel 8 when we put it in that mode. But it is the same sceneario each time. All 3 repeaters show up almost instantly after a channel change, but slowly disappear in less than 10 minutes.
    Here is our config:

We are wondering if you have any tips to get around this.
Also,  should these access points be able to handle ~200 clients? How close to the root access point should the repeaters be placed? I basically just go until my signal gets low and put a repeater within that range. Could vary from 30-60 meters away.
    Thanks

Also,  should these access points be able to handle ~200 clients?
APs, in theory, can handle >1,200 clients.  In theory.  In practice, Cisco recommends between 12-25 clients.  Imagine if you have, say, 50 clients and they are trying to access the network on a 100 Mbps FastEthernet connection.  That slows them down, right?  But consider wireless as a broadcast.  One talks and the rest listens.
