Interference on display.

I'm getting random interference patterns on the display. Sometimes an image will become distorted and have lines run through it. Has anyone had this problem? I've had this on iOS 4.2 &4.3 so I'm hesitant to say it's a software issue. These issues have also caused a lot of lag lately on my iPod.

There are many reports of graphics issues after updating to 4.3, but I'm not aware of the same with 4.2.

  • DISPLAY INTERFERENCE PowerbookG4 (2005)

    Hello -
About 18 months ago my PBG4 had a fairly hefty crash whilst linked to an external hard drive. This took the internal and the external drives down. The internal HD was replaced - by an authorised mac chap and a cloned system was put onto the machine. When i turned it on i got this chaotic interference, which doesn't look unlike the wind filter in photoshop. My mac chap checked again for any pinched wires and obvious loose connections, but found no problems. Screenshots and the mirror mode using an external monitor show no problems. This leads us to assume it was a lid problem. However, at the beginning of the week of 8th feb i needed to use it so hooked it up to an external monitor. After about 2 hours, the problem seemed to go away. It was then off for 24 hours and restarted on the wednesday - without the external monitor and was working fine. It was then used all thursday and friday. Not even a flicker! Great i thought it was fixed, and we all assumed it must have been dust that had burnt off(!)when the machine had been opened. It has now been off for 10 days and i've just turned it back on and the same problem has reoccurred.
OK, problem-solvers! This is the first time i've used a forum (of any type) and what i would like is:
    a) can anyone tell me what the problem is?
    b) why would it go away and then come back?
    c) is it just a case of warming up???
    d) its a good machine with a new hard drive - what would you do with it!?
I did replace it with an imac - which is lovely, but i am slightly heartbroken that i thought old faithful was healed!
I wait with baited breath and a modicum of hope that someone can solve my problem, or at least explain it!
Thanks for reading all of my message, i hope it is as clear as possible...

    Hello BGreg
Thanks for your reply. I think the mac chap did this and nothing showed up, but i'll check. My original cd is now redundant as a newer system (leopard)was put on it and i don't have that disc. But here's an update for you. I've had it on for 4 hours and after 2.5 hours it solved itself again - just like last week. The display has completely stabilised.
This is peculiar because, does that mean it needs 2 hours warm up everytime i go to use it? However, I just unplugged the machine to move it and it's battery usage had dropped to 98% and the screen went again. Could it be a battery issue - that if the machine is not at 100% it won't function properly?
thanks so much for your help - let me know what you think now. best wishes esther

  • How to deal with hum/interference - 30in Cinema display?

Hi, I hope someone can help with this!
I have a 30inch Cinema display, which has started to create a hum through my powered speakers (Genelec 8040's). I have tried plugging the (mains powered) speakers into a separate mains socket, moving them about, as far as is practical, and even sticking a sheet of tinfoil between the back of them , but no luck.
The hum comes on at very low volume levels, and is persistent, i.e. if I am playing a track in iTunes, and there is a quite bit in the song, I get 'errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr' in the background.
Now the weird thing is that I was playing a game, and for some reason there was no hum, which suggests it may be fixable via software/settings?
I'm a bit of a newbie at this stuff (as the tinfoil experement, may suggest!), so I'd really appreciate any advice!
    TIA,
    Steve

Thanks for the feedback. I thought it was the monitor, as the hum is only present when it is on. It may be a combination of the Mac Pro & the monitor though... Mmmmm...
I think I may have fixed it, well improved the situation, I'll say what I did in case anybody else has the same issue, or has a better fix.
I tried unplugging the mini jack audio out, which goes from the mac, to a mixing desk, to the powered Genelec audio monitors. When I did this the hum stopped, which I think means that the issue is a poorly shielded mini jack to phono cable, as if it was direct interference from the monitor to the speakers, it should (in theory) be present regardless of whether the audio is connected into the mac or not.
I have moved the cable about, and the hum is reduced, so I think I have found the problem.
Hopefully this will be of use if anybody else has the same issue!

  • Ideas for a Bad Display

I don't have a PBG4 15" but I'd like to get one. I'm just going by what I've heard and want to ask someone if they'll try this and see if it helps the lines.
First this is the first PB to have on board AirPort, so try disabling AirPort and BlueTooth as well and see if that helps.
I wonder if the lines have anything to do with being on battery/AC. I have heard stories of wavy PB screens on AC.
Do those with the issue ever notice the lines move? that would be a dead on interference problem IMO.
And if someone is willing to open up their PB, does moving the video cable and/or toying with shielding on the display/display cable/GPU help any? I wonder if maybe interference is generated within the LCD panal. Will someone look at theirs with the backlight completely off and report their findings?
Finally, it seems like this may be an issue with the brightness of the LCD (which is why i'm curious of how it would look with no backlight)
Will someone put an all black image on the monitor and see if it's noticable then? maybe even post a picture so others can see?
Does anyone notice some difference in the lines if they flex the LCD panel slightly (pull the left side in and push the right out) or if they tap or push on the LCD from either the back or the front?
Thanks to anyone who replies with some answers.
Hopefully I can get a 15" soon. I really want to get a PowerBook. This knowledge of the screen issue has set me back some on it. I'd love to get a 17" if it didn't have this issue which it seems like it doesn't but that's really too big for what I want (I have a desktop here with a 24" widescreen CRT that gets 2304x1440 so I will use the desktop when I wanna push pixels) and it's way too expensive.
Thanks for anyone and everyone's time.
    --Ryan

I suggest you go to an Apple store and try those things out on your own, or just go buy one.
I'm not about to take mine apart, but I'll say that it has nothing to do with AirPort or Bluetooth,
being plugged in to the AC adapter or battery,
the faint white horizontal lines do not move (but there are diagonal moving lines in certain colors, especially on the top left part of the screen),
I'm about 99.9% sure it has nothing to do with the brightness,
the lines are not noticeable on white, black, or pure red, green or blue with full RGB values,
and flexing the screen doesn't do anything at all (except put unnecessary strain on the display)
This is either a problem with the LCD, or the graphic card, and right now, I'm banking on LCD (since the lines don't show up on an external monitor.)

  • Update from apple software - seems to have broken displays

I have just taken delivery of my mac pro (felt like christmas) - ran through the setup all of 6 minutes (eat your heart out Bill) - ran software update as it popped up to get it up to latest settings etc..
now monitors do not work they flash on and off and display signal not detected every three to four seconds then come on then go black etc.. and it continues
they setup from the base installation was sweet and this only started after the update ran and rebooted
i can't seem to find any detaisl on a rollback feature or after zapping pram and disconnecting everything and rebooting still no change
    any ideas
monitors are benq 22" in res 1680X1050 and as i said they were working brilliantly till the update ran
any help appreciated - think it might be re install of system software to get it back to original settings

You might want to add more details in "Computer Model Information" lines.
Is there any source of interference nearby?
The Mac Pro - does it run on a dedicated line / circuit? UPS and/or line conditioner? It shouldn't be putting a real tax on the circuit, unless it is shared with a lot of equipment. They've been known to push the limits for some.
I've seen more than a couple threads reporting problems with ViewSonic (gladly my LCD VGA is older and seems safe).
Are they running off X1900 Radeon?
Sometimes a system ships and even DIMMs can be loosened, maybe video card needs to be reseated?
Hopefully it is just a loose cable somewhere.

  • Max retransmissions & interference threshold

We're getting complaints about a specific 1131AG in the field only being intermittently accessible. WCS shows both the a and b/g interfaces randomly bouncing, sometimes the reason for the bounce is unknown other times it says it's because it lost connection to the controller. I can ssh into the WCS but the engineer who setup the AP's doesn't seem to have enabled remote access via telnet or ssh.
We are also seeing these events:
802.11a interface of AP * is down: Controller 172.17.0.10 Reason: Max retransmissions for the AP have reached.
Interference threshold violation reported by '802.11b/g' interface of AP *, connected to Controller '172.17.0.10'.
I know I can adjust the threshold percentage, but that would only seem to mask the issue.

  • What is the best way to use two external displays at the same time?

One of my displays has HDMI, DVI, and VGA inputs. The other has VGA and DVI inputs.
    MBP, early 2011
    Mac OS X 10.6.7
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5

Kappy is dead on correct about Bridge Mode as a requirement for the Time Capsule.
Do you know how to check to see if the Time Capsule is configured this way?
Next question.....you really should not try to have two wireless networks....one Arris and another Time Capsule.....unless it is absolutely necessary. Two wireless routers in close proximity can create wireless interference effects that can cause problems with either...or both...networks.
Best to turn off the wireless on one router to keep the chances of wireless interference between routers minimized.
Are both the Arris and Time Capsule providing wireless signals?

  • No Startup Chime or Display

I just installed a new HD and and preceeded to test the operation during re-assembly. I also used compressed air to clean dust from fans etc while it was disassembled. After the LCD was initially re-installed (screwed down), there was static video interference & intermittent video loss. I reconnected the wire terminals and reseated (screwed), this time it booted to OSX disk and I proceeded to format drive. Now I shut it doen from the menu and installed front cover. prior to screwing in place, I performed another startup test, this time there was no chime and no video. Board displays two green LED's out of 4 from the left side. Any thoughts on what I may be facing here? Perhaps something may need re-seated?

Well, the issue appears to be random and has occurred again. It seemed to have triggered when installing the front case screws along the bottom right side of the panel. I noticed that some of the screws seem to be very tight going in as if cross threaded but they are not. I was very careful to ensure the frame was completely seated with no obstructuons before starting to install the screws. The second one is from the bottom right corner triggered the display to go dead. I removed the screw, restarted and all is OK again ?!@#. If someone can suggest a board component that may be a likely culprit I would appreciate it. Since this is also my first time using and replacing a hardware component of a MAC I would appreciate any further assistance.

  • Should I purchase a Macbook Pro 15" Retina Display?

Yeah so I've been saving up all my money from work (or w/e I have left) into buying myself a Macbook Pro Retina for video editing and graphics design but now I'm reading about this whole Image Retention/Ghosting issue. I'm just not sure if it's worth the gamble to get one now since there's no way of knowing if you're purchasing a LG display or a Samsung Display. I was going to purchase the highest model too but now I'm just confused. Should I just wait for Apple to fix the problem in a couple of months or should I just purchase this product and take the gamble? I'm lost. I know it's ultimately up to me but I owuld like some opinions or suggestions. I'm just scared of shelling out $3.1k for a laptop that has this annoying issue.

I suggest you don't buy a Retina model. There is nothing that special about the Retina other then the screen.
And it is basically a Sealed unit that can never be upgraded and very hard to repair as all parts, except the cooling fans, the SSD/Flash storage module (but Proprietary) and the WiFi/Bluetooth card (It is a Combo card that has interference between the 2 sections), are either glued in to the case parts or soldered to the Logic board (That isApple Speak for the motherboard). Even the screen is Glued into the lid aluminum housing.
You'd be better off buying the standard model with the HiRes screen and the fastest CPU offered with the standard RAM and hard drive then upgrading those 2 parts, which you can do yourself very easily, and you will have basically the same system except for the screen, and the HiRes screen is very close to the Retina.
Also whichever Mac you buy factor in the cost of the Applecare extended warranty as to fix any Mac out of warranty is very expensive. If you do buy the Retina Make Sure you get the Applecare warranty as to fix one of those out of warranty would be close to if not more then the cost of buying a New computer.

  • External display issues heat-related?

I have a new late-2008 MacBook, the 2.0 GHz model, and a mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter connected to my several-years-old aluminum Apple Cinema Display. After having no problems for the first couple of days, today on a couple of occasions I've had the same symptoms others are reporting - screen goes black momentarily/intermittently, what looks like horizontal pixel-thin Morse code interference, etc. So far, this has happened when the computer was busy doing a SuperDuper! backup, so I'm wondering if this might be heat-related. If I unplug the external monitor, after a few minutes things are okay again. Right now it's pretty idle, and as it was the first couple of days I'm seeing no problems whatsoever, all of which would be consistent with a heat-related problem - or many other possible explanations, too!
It's a great machine aside from this glitch.
    Doug

Well, in my case it's definitely not a cell phone - I don't have one - nor a cordless phone, since I wasn't using one at the time. My AirPort Extreme base station is immediately below the MacBook, about 2-3 feet, and a Fantom disk drive is nearby.
So far, the only times I've seen this were when I was doing a SuperDuper! backup, partway through it, and when I was doing an initial sync between the new MacBook and my Apple TV (once I figured out how to make that happen.) No browsers, no 23 other things going on, no third-party software involved.
It may be more load-related than heat-related, or it may be neither, but hopefully it'll stay infrequent and easily resolved until a real fix comes along.
    Doug

  • External Display doesn't wake from display sleep

My display is set to sleep after an idle period (computer itself set to not sleep), when I return to the computer and wake the displays the external display most of the time does not "wake" or come back with picture. I need to disconnect the adapter and plug it in again.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

    Guys, please read THIS thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1760586&tstart=0
EVERYONE is experiencing this bug if you're using your new MacBook Pro with an external display. In the thread above, I detail how to fix it without having to unplug the DisplayPort adapter.
    The symptoms you're experiencing are:
1.) Bizarre interference all over the external display when either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
2.) External display not actually turning on at all after either a) waking your notebook from sleep, or b) turning screen on if the screen is set to turn off after x minutes.
The fix is listed in the above thread. It's only a temporary workaround, and Apple REALLY needs to address this issue ASAP.

  • Browsers cannot display web pages on HD TV

    Hello all.
Firstly let me start by saying I used to build and fix computers so I have a good idea about solving tech problems, but this one has me stumped!  Running snow leopard on Mac Mini.  Connected Mac Mini to HD TV VIA HDMI cable as using VGA gave out of range signal.
Anyway the issue is that any browser will not work in any other resolution than 420 P (TV can go to 1080)
Now, I completely reformatted the Mac and on first use it defaulted to 720p mode and browser worked (yay!)
However, as soon as the resolution is altered, no browser will work in any other mode than 420p - infact I only have to get display preferences up and not alter anything and it stops working in 720p and other resolutions.
I have pinged/tracerout etc and the net is NOT dropping out so that is not the issue.  The issue seems to be some video related problem, because if I delete the windowserver.plist and configuration preference files, it again boots up at 720p (which is the default for the HD tv, but if either display preferences are viewed, or the computer is restarted, that's it, the browsers stop working.
When trying to load an address, the blue colour in the address bar which shows how far a page is loading is about a quarter of the way, it actually picks the website up because the name at the top will show (for example (welcome to facebook.com)  ) however, nothing is displayed, it just tries continually to display a page but it can't.
There is no timeout message, so it IS connected to the website, just not displaying the contents (the browser stays white)
I have searched on the net and found one person with this issue and no resolve.  Has anyone any ideas what else I can try to resolve it?
    Thanks

I assume this is a wireless network, though you didn't say. What might be happening is that the mini is on the ragged edge of wireless reception. Adding extra electromagnetic interference from the TV operating at a high pixel clock is pushing reception over the edge to where it stops working.
If that's true then you either need to try and reposition the mini further from the TV and closer to the wireless access point, or else switch to a wired connection to the network.

  • Airplay display keeps breaking up from my new Mac book. Help!

When using the airplay from my iPhone or iPad the picture and audio works well. No breaking of picture or audio.
When I try do the same from my new mac book pro the picture and audio keep breaking up, which is very frustrating considerng the new mac should have a better connection then that of older devices.
    I have a Mac book pro with Retina display, 2.6 Ghz, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, OS X 10.9.2.
    Have the latest Apple TV.
The issue has nothing to do with the router as the same wireless connection is used for the iPhone and iPad.
    Looking for some genuine help..

WiFi connections will always be flaky and re-liable at best.  Especially with home grade WiFi hardware.  You will save your self a lot of headache if you use Wired connections for the MBP and ATV.
considerng the new mac should have a better connection then that of older devices.
Why would that be?  They are all using the same wireless standard, connecting to the same wireless router.  The MBP being a year or two newer does not magically make it's network connection faster just because you think it should be.
The issue has nothing to do with the router
That is in fact exactly what it is.  Or more specifically using WiFi.
as the same wireless connection is used for the iPhone and iPad.
No they arn't.  They may all be connecting to the same device, but they each have a serrate connection, on different frequencies, in different locations, that are getting hit with different random levels of background noise and interference.

  • TV as wireless display

I need to connect my Powerbook wirelessly to use my TV as an occasional alternate display. What are my options?

You're not going to have many easy options that will have computer quality. There are wireless video extenders, like this one and this one. However, many are set up for TV resolutions and not computer resolutions, so the picture quality may not be as good as a true computer monitor. Also, being wireless, they are vulnerable to interference and slow refresh.

Connected a new Mac mini to a 20in apple Cinema Display and display does not work

How are the two TVs connected to the Minis?
Tell us more about the "problem" TV.
Are the Minis in the same location with both TVs? I ask because maybe interference is causing the problem. If the Minis are in same location it cold be cause by interference generated by the TV
