Interlaced and choppy looking video

Hi,
I have a 16:9 NTSC Motion menu I am trying to encode in compressor for DVDSP. Unfortunately, when compressed with DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes preset (even at 23.97 FPS, progressive) it still looks choppy with interlace artifacting. If I drop it right in DVDSP, it looks pretty good... when nothing is moving, but when there is some animation, the edges of my objects look like hair combs, ya' feel me? What am I doing wrong, are there any glaring red flags here? Thank you!

What kind of display are you viewing this on? What kind of displays do you want to play this DVD on? Have you actually tried watching it on a regular TV through a regular DVD player?
If you are going to watch this on a progressive display (LCD TV, computer monitor etc.), go progressive. Progressive video will look fine on an interlaced display, maybe not exactly as smooth as interlaced, but good enough (at least good enough for menus).
I would recommend reading this:

Progressive is the future, at least for HDTV in Europe

  • Airport express and choppy streaming video

I am running AX with a DHCP router from my service provider. Up until recently I watched streaming video (Adobe Flash Player) with no problems.  Now the video seems to stutter and have to rebuffer often and it seems to happen when Airport  is "Looking for new Networks".  This means the video stutters every 30 seconds or so.  Is there any way to avoid this?  My connection does not actually drop, it's just the streaming video that gets broken up.
So far I have tried to
    manually stick to one channel
reset the airport express to factory settings (which actually helped a bit; stutters from every 10 seconds to every 30 seconds)
    fiddled with interference robustness
    Any suggestions?
    AC

I'm not sure of the exact length restriction, but I have used a 100' cable with my AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to connect to the stereo and it worked just fine.

  • Slow FPS, graphics and choppy video when connected to a Mini-DVI cable to external monitor on Macbook Mid2007 4GB RAM

    Hi,
I have a Mid-2007 Macbook white. I have upgraded its memory to 4GB. Snow Leopard was working great, and I said to myself maybe it's time to upgrade to Lion.
After the upgrade all was well. However, a big problem occurs when I plug in to the Mini-DVI display port with the HDMI adapter, to connect to my Sony LCD HDTV. The whole graphics and video slow down, everything is choppy. Quicktime and VLC video playback is strobe and choppy looks like very low Frame Rate. Cannot watch anything, not HD nor low resolutions. The entire computer is slow when the cable is connected.
    Things I tried:
*VGA adapter seems to work fine - it's the digital display output that probably causes that.
*Running it through a new user.
This never happened on Snow Leopard. i'm considering to go back. However, I am wondering if there is a way to fix this minor problem.

    Update:
We solved the problem. Weird solution but now it seems to work. I plugged a VGA adpater and played with the screen rsolutions to try and watch a movie well on my LCD screen. I changed the screen resolutions but I couldn't revert back to the default settings. Pressing "Detect Displays" didn't do anything.
Here is the interesting part: When I placed back the DVI-HDMI adapter, suddenly everything worked fine!!! There was no choppy videos, no low fps, works prefect.
Something weird is going on here, but I'm happy I managed to get the DVI to HDMI to work because I was about to removie Lion and bring back Snow Leopard.

  • DW CS5 and choppy video in IE

    Problem
Flash video inserted in a webpage made in DW CS5 and played back in IE8 plays back at a frame rate that is too low (looks "choppy").
Flash video inserted in a webpage and played back in IE8 plays back fine and smoothly / correct frame rate.
    In CS3
    Insert / Media / Flash Video / Browse / choosing a 480x270 FLV video at 29.97 fps
    Clicking "detect size"
    Chosing "clear skin 1"
    Saving
Now a screen/message somes up:  "Copy Dependet Files" comes up. It says:
"This page uses an object or behaviour that requires supporting files. The following files have been copied to your local site. You must upload them to your server in order for the object or behaviour to function"
    And then mentions ONE file:
    "......../CS3%20test/Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js"
I click "OK" and it's saved.
I now go to the folder where I have the index-file and the other files.
I right click on index.html and open it with Internet Explorer 8. It plays smooth and just as expected.
I right click on index.html and open it with Internet Firefox. It plays smooth and just as expected.
Summing up: Inserting a flash video in Dreamweaver CS3 seems to work fine when I play it in Internet Explorer 8.
    In CS5
    Insert / Media  / FLV...  /
I prompts me to save now. I save - and get the "Insert FLV" menu.
I click "Browse" and choose the video I want.
I click "Detect Size" and then hit "OK"
Now I hit "Save again". Now a message comes up:
"This page uses an object or behaviour that requires supporting files. The following files have been copied to your local site. You must upload them to your server in order for the object or behaviour to function"
    Now TWO files are mentioned:
    Scripts/expressInstall.swf
    Scripts/swfobject_modified.js
    I click "OK"
I now go to the folder where I have the index-file and the other files that I made in Dreamweaver CS5.
I right click on index.html and open it with Internet Explorer 8. It plays at a too low frame rate of 10-15 fps and not as expected.
I right click on index.html and open it with Internet Firefox. It plays smooth and just as expected.
Summing up: Inserting a flash video in Dreamweaver CS5 makes the video playing back at a too low frame rate in Internet Explorer 8.
I uploaded the two versions (CS3 and CS5) to a website and had colleagues view it with different browsers and indeed IE8 always displays the video made in DW CS3 smooth and in DW CS5 as choppy/too low frame rate.
    QUESTION
What am I doing wrong here? Any settings I've missed here? I can see that the file saving behaviour is a little different. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    David

    1. The videos were encoded identically in both situations. In fact, it is the exact same FLV file being used... Of  course, otherwise it would be a meaningless comparison... But I have tried with numerous different FLV files, different framerates, bitrates and sizes. The problem is identitcal. CS3 plays fine in IE8 and CS5 plays choppy and with a lower frame rate in IE8. The scenario is the same when I compare CS3 and CS5.
    2. No I can't post anything. It's just a low frame rate that's all. Imagin a clip playing at 8 fps. That's what it looks like. Everything works normally, just a low frame rate. Just use any NLE and set the project to play something at 8 -12 fps and that is exactly what it looks like.
Flash video inserted in CS5 Dreamweaver results in IE8 playing back the video at a too low frame rate. Firefox plays it back fine at full frame rate. This indicates the video itself is fine. Something is happening between IE8 and CS5 DW perhaps?
Any more ideas? Thanks and advance.

  • Jerky and choppy video

    Good morning all!
I'm not sure this is a Final Cut problem, but that's all I use so I'm asking here.
Using FCS3 on a Mac Pro. When I preview a video, everything is fine. But, when I bring the video down to the timeline, it's jerky and choppy. Also, when I export to a Quicktime file the video is not smooth either.
It's only on my machine that this is happening. If I do this on another FCS2 machine, or video the Quicktime video on any other machine (Mac or Win) it's fine.
Seems to me it's something to do with a codec somewhere but I've not the slightest idea where to go looking. I've dumped all the FCS3 preferences and still no good.
All of this started when I upgraded from FCS2 to FCS3. I'm using a Mac Pro with 13GB of RAM and I've got gigatons of free space on all my drives. I'm seeing this problem with video shot on a Nikon D90 in AVI format as well as video shot on a Canon DSLR in their format (forget exact format).
Remember, in the preview, everything looks fine.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Seems to me it's something to do with a codec somewhere but I've not the slightest idea where to go looking.
open any of you files with QT and hit command + I. What does the QT inspector say?
(Alternatively in timeline select a clip and hit command + 9).
If it is a delivery format (like H.264, MPEG etc) then you need to convert
all your material to an editing format like ProRes
    Use [MpegStreamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to convert.

The Firefox icon is the default feature for Windows Vista and 7 only, it does not apply to Windows XP users.
To have the Firefox icon instead of the Menu Bar:
View > Toolbars and UNCHECK the Menu Bar.
After that, click on the Firefox icon and you'll have the Menu Bar appear again.

  • IPad 2 YouTube videos are green and choppy?

I can see the video but it keeps flashing green and chopping out. Anybody know how to fix this? I would really appreciate it.

I have also discovered that videos i recorded with the iPad itself are now having the same problem as well as videos on the Internet. I've also seen it on the opening screen for any game loft game. Basically anything considered a video suffers from the green and choppy problem.

  • Videos played via internet are so slow and choppy, SLOW Firefox

Was wondering if anyone knew for sure the reason why videos/movie trailers played thru either Safari or Firefox are extremely slow and choppy on my G5 imac or G4 iBook laptop. Not sure if the outdated processors cant handle the flash embedded videos Youtube, Quicktime and other sites post, but it is really annoying not to be able to watch anything smoothly. Even if i let the entire video load (if it is a quicktime), then play it, it still is very choppy. The audio plays fine, but the video never keeps up. I have a 6mb DSL connection, so that cant be the problem. Any video I play via my iPod Touch (aside from flash videos it cant play) they are as smooth as can be (And that is via a wireless connection). Which makes me think it is a processor issue. Any thoughts?
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can remedy this situation? (aside from buying a new computer...)
PLUS, does anyone notice how slow Firefox is, or is it just me? Seems like even when i type in this form field, time lags as the letters show up. I have the latest version, and it is so slow. Switching tabs takes time... Reading and accessing RSS fields in the Feed Sidebar plug in is really slow...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

QuickTime is designed to "drop" frames during playback when the machine can't keep up with the video data rate (audio continues normally). This may appear as a "stutter" during playback on an older machine.
It's not based on the Internet connection speed.
Apple movie trailers use the newer (2005) H.264 video codec and they demand a high CPU (Intel is best). You should get better performance on your G5 than on the G4.
Videos encoded using Flash will be equally difficult to view on older machines

  • Transition distortion and choppy bird wings - please help

    Hello. 2 issues please.
    *1. Transitions*
Lately, I've noticed that when I use certain transitions, after they're exported they come out rough, pixelated, and grainy -- cross-stretch in particular. It looks fine in the project. You can see an example of this distortion in this short vid where it's the only transition I use:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyBdhexZnCY
This video (as are all of mine) is also published on 8 other sites (magnify, yahoo, myspace, daily motion, blip.tv, viddler, and metacafe.) Videos are uploaded to TubeMogul which then distributes them accordingly. So the quality varies from site to site, even though my settings for the video are the same. For example, the transition looks the best on blip and viddler - the sites with the best quality consistently.
    *2. Choppy Bird Wings*
I videotape lots of birds in flight -- mostly raptors. On YouTube the wings in motion frequently appear chopped up, pixelated, and considerably distorted. The other sites are better. I know this has something to do with fast moving objects, but I hardly ever had this problem in the past. Only since YouTube removed its requirement that all vids could not exceed 100 MB.
I tried making a separate vid for YouTube exceeding the 100 MB. I experimented with different settings. Really didn't solve the problem. I even tried their new tips for Apple users and it just made things worse.
I'll tell you what I usually do, and then show you what YouTube recommends: First, my way:
Export -> quicktime conversion -> save menu:
    format: mpeg-4
    Options: file format: mp4
    video format: H.264
    image size: 768 X 576 SD
    frame rate: 30
    key frame every 24 frames
    Video Option:
    restrict profile to main
encoding mode: best quality - multi-pass
data rate: whatever gets me closest to 100 MB which depending on the video of course is usually anywhere from 2000 to 3000.
Now this is what YouTube recommends for Apple users:
    In the Options box:
    1. In the Video section select the following:
    * Compression Type: H264
    * Frame Rate: 30
    * Data Rate: Automatic
(if you choose to restrict the Data Rate, make sure to choose the highest value acceptable to you- more bits = better quality)
    * Key Frames: Automatic
    * Frame Reording: Unchecked
    2. In the Video section click "Size":
Dimensions: Set this to the original size of your video (Note: HD resolutions preferred- 1280x720 or 1920x1080)
    3. In the "Prepare for internet Streaming" section:
Select the "Prepare for internet Streaming" and choose "Fast Start" from the drop-down menu.
    4. Once you've made all of these selections, click the "OK" button to save your preferences.
    5. Add a title to the video file and click the "Save" button to save your edited version of your movie. Your project will then be exported and be ready to upload to YouTube.
    (end of YouTube instructions)
Okay so I've never made it for streaming. That box never even highlights when I'm doing my settings. When I did it their way, everything was much worse.
What am I doing wrong? How can I eliminate the distorted transitions and the choppy wings? I realize I might need to make a video with separate setting for YouTube, but if so, what would that be?
    Here are my specs:
    FCE 4
    Camera: Canon ZR 900
I capture with firewire to iMac (Mac OSX (10.5.6) Snow Leopard)
    frame size is usually 720 X 480
video rate is usually 29.97 fps
pixel aspect usually: NTSC CCIR 601
    16 bit integer
If you need any more information about what I'm doing, please feel free to ask. Thanks,
    Judy

Well I'm not seeing the exact same settings in the dialogs that you may be seeing; I'm running FCE 3.5 on the last version of Tiger (10.4.11) so that may be why. But generally the different settings have different data rates and can have different frame sizes too. For example, in the MP4 settings, some default to a 320 pixel width, obviously expecting to be shown on portable devices.
There are more qualified folks here than me to give advice on your jittering wings and transition issues, but I'm thinking your video was showing some interlacing that may have been amplified due to some mismatch of settings in FCE and your original footage. This I think accounts for the error messages you might be getting.
Basically you should go to your browser palette in FCE and find the window with your imported & captured clips, and show it all in list view. Then you can scroll horizontally and look at all the vital specs of your original footage. Is it shot in regular DV or anamorphic DV? Is it 720x480? etc. And then you need to make your Sequence settings match that.
Right-click on your Sequence icon (or select it and go the Sequence menu up top) and select 'Settings'. Then click the button that says "load Sequence preset", and load the preset that matches your footage. The pop-up menu has several options; you can ignore the PAL presets if you bought your camcorder in the USA. If you've shot in DV (I think you did) then you're looking for the DV NTSC presets, and you should probably use one of the 48Khz presets (the Khz refers to the audio sampling quality) and choose the anamorphic preset *if your original footage is anamorphic*. If it's not, then choose the non-anamorphic preset. (anamorphic is 4:3 footage later 'stretched' horizontally into 16:9.)
I have no experience trying to mix and match 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic footage in the same sequence but I can imagine there would be issues with that. Again, other folks here will answer that better than I can.
I hope this gets you started.....

  • What's the best way of importing, editing, exporting and watching AVCHD videos without losing quality?

Whenever I import AVCHD (.mts extension files) to Final Cut Pro X (via Import from camera), iMovie, Adobe Premiere Elements 10 or Adobe Premiere Pro CS4; when I later export those videos to any format I can imagine, I can't get the same quality than when I play them through the camera connected by HDMI to TV (the camera's movements are not any smooth).
How have you solved this problem? Is it just me?
By the way, maybe the problem is in watching: what apps do you use to play the exported media? Do you watch the final videos just on TV? Do you create blu-ray discs?
I was also wondering what would happen if I created a blu-ray image, have you tried this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pol

My video was shot by a Canon HF100 at 1440x1080 25fps 1080i 25i (interlaced) and imported to Final Cut Pro X without transcoding to ProRes (1st time) and transcoding (2nd time).
The project settings are set to: set automatically based on 1st video clip (so they're 1440x1080 1080i 25i) and I used to leave Audio and Render to default settings (Surround, 48kHz, ProRes 422), but I have also done a few tests with ProRes 422 HQ and Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2. Should I try with ProRes 4444?
I usually export the project using Current settings (in video codec), and I've also burned an AVCHD DVD (I plybacked it on PlayStation 3 - also looked choppy). I've also exported to H.264 codec.
The video looks choppy on Mac played by Quicktime and VLC. The video I could export to MP4 also looked choppy on PlayStation 3 and Samsung LED TV.
    Thanks for taking your time,
    Pol
