Interlaced playback in qtpro7 on 1 mac and deinterlaced in qt7 on 2nd mac?

howdy folks!
i've got a g4 dual 1.42ghz tower running quicktime pro 7.2.0 and a 17" macbook pro running quicktime 7.2.0...
currently i'm exporting movies from imovie (although i'm learning fcp 5.1) using either full quality or expert settings...(btw, what are the full quality settings?)
the quicktime pro on the g4 plays full quality .dv movies with interlaced lines while the regular quicktime on the macbook pro plays the same file back deinterlaced...
1.   how do i get the quicktime pro on the g4 to playback deinterlaced movies?
2.   does quicktime playback actually affect the final output to dvd? (e.g. if i cannot fix this deinterlaced playback issue, is it affecting my final dvd product)
3.   is there an actual quality difference with compression and export going from fcp 5.1 > dvd studio pro 4 / imovie hd 6 > dvd studo pro 4 / imovie hd 6 > idvd 6?
thank ya kindly for your support!
cheers, howdy

2. does quicktime playback actually affect the final output to dvd?
It shouldn't, but unfortunately some apps stubborny honor the playback quality setting when processing the input files!
For example: if you want interlaced video-DVD output from Toast 7, you must manually remember to set the iMovie reference.mov to High Quality, non-deinterlaced. Then feed it to Toast 7.
Also when you import iMovie project's /Cache/Timeline Movie.mov reference movie to iMovie project: by default the input is deinterlaced. So to preserve all quality you must tweak the Timeline Movie.mov's quality settings and uncheck the Deinterlace options.
Many other apps behave the same so watch out!!
That applies to .mov files, usually .dv files' playback quality doesn't matter when they are used as an input.
BTW, .dv files' playback quality is deinterlaced low quality by default. Also note that that it isn't possible to save the high quality flag to the .dv file's data-fork, so you can a) save as... as a .mov file. Or b) save the HQ info in the .dv file's resource fork (MPEG Streamclip and Toast use this trick in .dv files).
Also remember that to verify what quality flag the .dv file really has, you must disable the QT Player's "Use high-quality video setting when available" -- otherwise the HQ flag is always checked eventhough it isn't really saved into the file!
So, in summary: you should always run a test with your workflow to verify how each app handles the quality setting of the input file!! If you don't, prepare yourself for unexpected deinterlaced output or bad quality output.
This is why I have a few interlaced test .dv clips on my HD so I readily see how each app handles them. I'm very familiar with each frame so I can quickly spot any unexpected bad quality from the output (due to unexpected deinterlacing, wrong field dominance, scaling artifacts etc). Those issues are surprisingly common, but sometimes they aren't readily recognized unless searched for.

  • Jerky Playback in PP CS5 Player (Mac)

    Greetings:  I have imported video (.mov file) from a Canon EOS 7D into  Premiere Pro CS 5 (shot at full 1080 HD resolution) and notice that the playback inside Premiere is extremely jerky and skipping.
    Here are some tests I ran to rule out what the issue might be:
    If I view the video on the camera, it seems very smooth.
    If I upload the same video to Vimeo.com, it also plays perfectly smooth.
    If I export the video to H264 / MP4, it also plays perfectly fine opened in Quicktime 10 (113)
    This tells me there is some other issue going on and that it's not actually a problem with my actual video.  I would like to solve this issue as I can see no possible to way to edit the video if playback is like this.
    I am hoping someone can shed some light on this. Thank you.

    While there is often a certain amount of opinion in the answers here (most people do have a tendency to think what works for them will work for everyone) you will also be given answers from people who use the software in the real world... and that goes far beyond the "minimum" requirements and into real, productive work
    You asked why you were having problems, and were told your computer is not "strong" enough to edit HD material... and you posted back that you didn't believe the answer
    Now, you say that you've read that you need to convert your material to a less demanding format... so maybe you are beginning to understand that your computer is not going to directly edit your souce material in a successful way
    I also don't see you mention the rest of your hardware... so do be aware that you need AT LEAST 2 hard drives for editing
    I'm in the Win world, editing AVCHD, and have an Intel i7 with 12gig ram and 3 hard drives... and that is just about the REAL minimum for the type of file

  • FCP7 HELP - Exported quicktime mov plays differently than what I edited on the timeline. The playback shows the clips with ins and outs that are different than what I set in the clips when I edited - some are too early and the clips don't playback

    Please help ASAP.
    Specs: IOS 10.6.8
    Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 -- Everything is edited, sourced, and stored on an 2TB external hard drive to make things go faster.
    Editing with FCP 7
    When I export the sequence I edited with quicktime, the playback video is very different from what I edited on the timeline. The playback has the clips with ins and outs that are way off than what I cut, and some of the clips don't show at all or have changed transitions. However when I play in the timeline in FCP, the sequence is fine, just the way I cut it.
    The source of the clips was one long .mov that I cut into clips for the timeline. Everything has gone smoothly but the exported .mov is just so different.
    How can I get the time codes of the clips to be the same in the exported .movs? I just want the quicktime .mov to represent my edit exactly.
    This video is due tomorrow - if the solution is too time consuming, can I play within the FCP player window and Log and Capture?
    Thanks,
    MV

    What is your source material? Is it H.264? FCP does not work correctly with that material.
    Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the item properties, and post that here.
    Next, click anywhere in your timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see your Sequence Settings. Either report those Sequence Settings, or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings and post that here.

    I purchased and successfully downloaded Caravan Palace - Caravan Palace and Panic. Both albums skip and cutout during playback. Q: what's happening and why?

    Sounds like a corrupt download.
    From iPad:
    Delete the albums: swipe you finger across and tap delete
    Make sure you have a good internet connection & re-download: Open iTunes app > More > Purchased
    From computer:
    Delete the albums: Select > right-click > delete
    Go to iTunes Store > Purchased (in Quick Links on the right)

  • Jumpy playback when exporting mixture of video and stills

    I have 2 still frames (jpgs) nestled between video clips on my time line to create a crude animation. When I watch the sequence playback on the FCP canvas, everything looks nice and smooth, but when I export a .mov or .flv, the playback skips over these still frames and just jumps to a slightly earlier spot in the video footage and continues playback. Even if I go frame by frame, the stills are no where to be found in the exported .mov. What gives?

    put your playhead over the clip you want to freeze in the timeline and then hit Shift+N this will send a extendable freeze frame of your clip in the viewer. You can drop that clip from the viewer back in your timeline.

  • Fullscreen Video playback shows wrong line at top and bottom

    I have a very annoying problem for years now, it happens with various Windows-OS (XP, Vista, Win 7) and no iTunes/Quicktime update changed anything ever:
    If I watch my iTunes Video clips (all bought in the iTunes store) in fullscreen the first (header) line of the video playback is displayed at the bottom and vice versa. You need to watch a video with different colors in the upper and lower part, then the error is quite noticeable.
    I use ATI Graphics cards.
    Anyone knows a solution?

    Thanks for your quick answer, however I did try that and the problem
    remained. Also, DVD's that I buy in the store play fullscreen without having
    to change any settings to the player nor the TV so way should it now? (just
    wondering)
    The only way to get it to play full screen is set the TV to "cinema 1"
    instead of "16:9". But then it looks like the image is blown up.
    I'm not sure if it's relevant but the TV is a widescreen LCD HD flatpanel,
    DVD player is a standard (cheap) one.

  • Best tool for Inverse Telecining and deinterlacing ?

    I have very limited experience in encoding videos before.
    Recently I'm trying to transcode a DVD into H.264 with x264. All the VOB files are dumped already.
    As for the video part, I've decided to do it this way :
    mkfifo TEMP.y4m
    x264 OPTIONS -o OUTPUT.mkv TEMP.y4m & mplayer -vo yuv4mpeg:file=TEMP.y4m OPTIONS INPUT.VOB
    I believe this method to be clean and efficient.
    The problem is: This VOB file is in NTSC format, and I'm pretty convinced that it's telecined, after reading this:
    http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm wrote:TELECINE is a process where the FILM first is slowed down to 23.976 frames/second. Then for every 4 frames, an extra frame is created from fields of adjacent frames. If a frame consists of two fields, top (t) and bottom (b) and the original sequence is 1t1b 2t2b 3t3b 4t4b, then the telecined sequence would be 1t1b 2t2b 2t3b 3t4b 4t4b (commonly called 2:3 pull down because of the alternating 2 field, 3 field progression). This also means that the frame rate increases to 29.97 frames/second.
    I viewed the video frame by frame, and found out that there're 2 sequential interlaced frames out of every 5 in a non-static scene. These are 2t3b 3t4b frames I think.
    mplayer comes with some video filters that might help: With "-vf pp=" the result isn't that satisfying, but "-vf pullup" do the job nicely, that is, I can almost see no interlacing at all with this command:
    mplayer -vf pullup VTS_01_1.VOB -noconfig all
    On the other hand, I also noticed that there're 2 sequential repeated frames out of every 5 in a non-static scene. The frame-rate is 29.970 fps. This is bad because repeating means inefficiency in terms of compression. The better result is using only one of these 2 repeated frames at a frame-rate of 23.976 fps, which means dropping 20% extra frames.
    But I don't know how to achieve this.
    I want to achieve this at the mplayer decoding stage, so that x264 is fed with a yuv4mpeg source stream with no interlacing or extra frames.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
    I'm not familiar with mencoder's options, though it seems to be able to drop the extra frame with "-vf pullup,softskip -ofs 24000/1001", but I can't find a way to let mencoder output as yuv4mpeg. Also there is a reason why I tend to avoid using mencoder:
    mencoder -ss 209 -endpos 20 -ovc copy -oac copy -o _short_.vob VTS_01_1.VOB
    This is supposed to cut a 20-second short clip from the VOB using copy. But even task as this simple could be wrong...which is really disappoiting. Look at these 2 screen shots.
    By using mencoder -ovc copy::
    http://omploader.org/vMjE3Zw
    The original (mplayer VTS_01_1.VOB)::
    http://omploader.org/vMjE3aA
    Maybe it's just my build of mencoder(compiled at home)... But with this I really can't say mencoder is to be trusted.
    ...Or, is it something wrong in my command?
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
    By the way, for this specific DVD, I believe mplayer plus x264 together can achieve the best result; on the other hand, just as the title suggests, I'd like to find some decent tool to do IVTC and Deinterlacing. CLI preferred but good GUI apps are also welcome
    Thanks in advance!

    skottish wrote:You should be able to use the -vf pullup,softskip stuff still.
    man mplayer wrote:Softskip
    Only  useful  with MEncoder.  Softskip moves the frame skipping (dropping) step of encoding from before the filter chain to some point during the filter chain.  This allows filters which need to see all frames (inverse  telecine,  temporal  denoising,  etc.)
    Actually, when I tried::
    mplayer -vf pullup,softskip VTS_01_1.VOB -noconfig all
    The result is the same as just using "-vf pullup". The extra frame can't be dropped by mplayer this way......
    Too bad many "convenient" tools like h264enc all use mencoder. I don't know whether handbrake does too. Haven't tried it out.
    Avisynth is a great tool but works only for windows. x264's built in deinterlaced mode does no good in my case. ffmpeg's filters are still too limited by far. What can I do? Is there anything that does nothing but good IVTC?
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
    Klepper wrote:It says to always use the softskip filter together with pullup
    man mplayer wrote:Always  follow  pullup  with the softskip filter when encoding to ensure that pullup is able to see each frame.
    In my case, pullup seems to work better than filmdint: I've just tried the h264enc script which is almost totally a frontend to mencoder. Look at the mencoder filters it used:
    mencoder VTS_01_1.VOB -o 01.avi -fps 30000/1001 -ofps 24000/1001 -vf filmdint=fast=0/io=30:24/dint_thres=256,softskip,harddup -oac pcm -ovc x264 -x264encopts <x264OPTIONS>
    See, it also used filmdint as you suggust. The result is not too bad: removed the extra frame and plays at 24fps. But I can still notice interlacing occasionally. Maybe it's because the video isn't constant pattern "PPPII" but with some shifting (say, PPPIIPPPII...PPPIIPIIPPPIIPPPII, I found some pattern like this in the source VOB)
    Man page says "io=<ifps>:<ofps>" must match "-fps/-ofps" ("-fps 30000/1001" and "-ofps 24000/1001" in my case.)
    Since -ofps is an option ONLY for mencoder, but not for mplayer, filmdint can't make mplayer drop the extra frame like mencoder.
    I played the VOB with "mplayer -vf filmdint=fast=0/io=30:24 VTS_01_1.VOB -noconfig all" and there're lots of "@@@@@@@@ Bottom-first field??? @@@@@@@@" spitted out in the console. I read about this in the man page but don't understand....
    If the source is MPEG-2, [u]this must be the first filter to allow access to the field-flags set by the MPEG-2 decoder[/u]. Depending on the source MPEG, you may be fine ignoring this advice, as long as you do not see lots of "Bottom-first field" warnings.
    I don't have any other filters in the command line, so... why?
    The occasional interlacing is the same as the video encoded with h264enc. Also, it did not drop the extra frame anyway.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
    Also I have a doubt:
    In my first post, I wrote:
    The original (mplayer VTS_01_1.VOB)::
    http://omploader.org/vMjE3aA
    But I think even this is not "original" -- not as good as the original video before it was telecined into NTSC format. I think it's mplayer not doing it good enough. The real original frame should have no blocking......
    I've compared it to one fansub rip, the same frame looks better than in the image above, very little blocking, also the bass string isn't blurred like in the image above:
    http://omploader.org/vMjE5aw
    I don't know how they did it. And I actually want to do it better

  • My old laptop crashed, how do I get music and pictures from ipod touch (2nd generation) to new laptop?

    My old laptop crashed.  I bought a new one, but when I loaded itunes and plugged in my ipad 2, it only added the songs that were purchased in the itunes store.  I upgraded my os to 5.0 and it deleted all of my songs, a lot of my apps, and all of my pictures except for the ones on the camera roll.  I have these pictures and songs on my itouch 2nd generation but I can't get it to synch with the new computer.  All of the solutions I have seen online don't work.  I can't upgrade to the newest operating system because it is only 2nd generation. I tried turning on Home sharing and saving to the cloud, but I can't get it to work on the itouch.  Please help!

    I don't have a backup copy of my old computer.  I bought an external hard drive and it said it backed up, but when I plugged it into my new computer, it was empty.  My old computer is not accessible.  Is there a way to get the music and pictures that are on my iphone and ipod onto my itunes account on the new computer? I have already lost them on my ipad.

  • Purchased songs and movies not visible on 2nd computer in Store

    Hi.
    Purchased songs and movies not visible on 2nd computer in Store. To confirm I went to re-purchase and received message telling me it was already purchased. Heeeelllppp! <smile>

    The purchased content will only be on the computer you actually downloaded it to unless you somehow move it to the other computer. You could burn content to a CD or DVD, use an external hard drive, a thumb drive, a network connection or, if you have one, an iPod.

  • I have two fields and I would like the 2nd field to display the word "Error" if the number is smalle

    I have two fields and I would like the 2nd field to display the word "Error" if the number is smaller than the number in field 1.
    can any one help?

    The code for the field? Sure, it's simple.
    You can use something like this as its custom calculation code:
    var v1 = this.getField("Field 1").valueAsString;
    var v2 = this.getField("Field 2").valueAsString;
    if (v1 && v2 && Number(v2)<Number(v1)) event.value = "Error";
    else event.value = "";
    Edit: Fixed code

  • Premiere pro can't fast color correct and deinterlace on GPU

    I recently posted saying that Premiere Pro could not succcessfully deinterlace a timeline that had footage with different field orders. Since then, I have done some more tests and have realised that the actual issue is that Premiere pro can not deinterlace footage that has a fast color correct effect on it. I replicated the same scenario on other footage and another machine with a different GPU and the same issue exists. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can fix this or am i going to have  to export an intermediate for each step? Cheers

    OK.
    Next try checking Maximum Render Quality.  (It'll force some things back to the CPU, including scaling and deinterlacing.)

  • Jumpy video playback from iPhone 5 to Mac Book Pro

    Hi
    I recently took some footage on my iPhone 5 and downloaded onto my 2007 Mac Book Pro via iPhoto. Unfortunately, mid download iPhoto became unresponsive and I had to Force quit.
    After restarting iPhoto I saw that the videos had not been downloaded so I started the process again. It was a seemingly successful download so I deleted the videos from my iPhone.
    Upon playback all the video's are jumpy. Other older video's all ready in the library are fine.
    It seems all the info is in there as each time I play a video back I see different parts of the video ie: the jumps are not all in the same place each time.
    Is it a playback 780 v 1080 issue?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
