Interlacing/combing on HDV QT export, worsened with Compressor H.264

Greetings,
I have created a 10 minute video of a child moving back and forth against a black background.  The material is HDV, captured and edited as HDV in FCP 7 with Pro-Res renders, and exported as QT using "Current Settings."  In the exported QT, I see that the material is interlaced, although the "combing" effect of the interlacing isn't terribly noticeable. (although I'd rather have NO interlacing without affecting resolution.)
But Then, the final output of the video is intended for a wireless media player, playing the movie as a data file.  I was told the media player needed a .mov file encoded with H.264 compression.  When I do this, the interlacing/combing becomes REALLY apparent on the edges of anything moving in the video-- and is especially amplified becaise the child is against black-- so the limbs and edges of the kid look really jagged.
Currently I am exporting two 5-minute QT's that need to be put together with additional elements to make up the final 10 minute piece. I am putting both 5 min QT's into another HDV sequence before my final QT export.  Would I have any initial success in not having interlaced edges if I put those two QT's into a ProRes sequence instead?  And if so, would it be ProRes 422 HQ 1080i?  Or would changing the setting to "P" help get rid of the interlacing, and keep all the digital information?
OR, should I try to get rid of the interlacing in Compressor?  As I said, when I tried this initially, the "combing" got worse.
The settings I used in Compressor were:
Compression H.264, leaving size and data rate and key frames all "current/automatic" (compression set to "best")
Frame Controls set to "on"
Output fields "same as source"
De-interlace set to "best"
Adaptive details checked.
The video is playing on a 42 inch flat panel monitor and WD a Live Plus media player.
I think the monitor is 1080p??  Perhaps I need to get rid of the interlacing because it is a flatscreen, progressive monitor?
Thanks for your help.  It is currently playing on the above equipment at the gallery and looks terrible so I need to fix asap.
Amy

Michael,
I just wanted to sum up what I ended up doing, for others folowing the post:
So I did three tests, and I will post settings and results below.  Setting the de-interlace to "progressive" did do the trick, the "combing" effect went away.
The settings above, with H.264 codec, and leaving size/frame rate etc. as same as source, gave the best results visually in picture.  Playback was good, I saw one or two tiny "skips" like a little stutter, barely noticeable.  Quality was set to "best."  This was only a 3-miute clip of the 10 minute piece, and render times were over 11 hours.  So when I do the whole piece I'm wondering if I should adjust any of the settings.  I'd like to get just as good of results but with less render time.  Any ideas?
Thank you again,
Amy

  • Export workflow with Compressor or QT?

I finally make the move to Studio Pro5 and FCP5, love the FCP and now have a confusing problem with a movie that I want to export with Chapters to DVDSP5.
    Choices:
    1. Export to QT, save as (not conversion), self contained from FCP with chapters,
only to import it into DVDSP5 for chapters and so I can then compress the
    movie?
    2. Export Compressor conversion for DVDSP5 but, I dont see my chapters from
    FCP timeline.
(This would be ok if my chapters from FCP5 showed up)
What happened to the direct QT to mpeg2 with chapters, Quick and direct.
I guess im trying to find out from someone the workflow from exporting a movie from FCP5 with chapters into DVDSP5.
It seems the manuals are not 100% accurate or clear on this process.

For me, I simply export my sequence using Export QuickTime Movie... leave it at Current Settings..., make it self contained (if I have the space), and bring that file into DVDSP. I let DVDSP handle the compression...
The only time I mess with Compressor is to play with frame rate conversions, and to do H.264 compressions for the web...

  • Exporting P2 with compressor

I'm exporting a ton of clips, using compressor, changing my DVC Pro HD (Varicam) clips to h.264. However, when I come to a folder with P2 clips in it that I've logged & transferred, I get a prompt in the compressor window that says:"one or more of the source media files cannot be found at the expected location". Am I missing some step in making this conversion with P2?

select a clip in either the browser of timeline and control click and choose reveal in finder. You can also select multiple clips in finalcutpro and choose "send" to compressor.

  • Exporting DVD with Compressor leaves masking around all edges

I'm exporting a video from Avid that was shot on a Canon GL2 Standard Definition Camera in 16:9 Anamorphic. I've successfully exported from Avid and everything shows as 16:9. I exported to a QuickTime Reference. I was able to successfully export a Web version in H264 that is full 16:9, I did have to change the pixel size to 864x486. However when I go to make a DVD I can't change the actual dimensions. I can crop it which removes a bunch of the frame. Does anyone know how to successfully get this compressed in a format that wont leave black lines around the top bottom and left and right.

I think you need to show some screen captures showing the differences between CS6 and CC and CC 2014.  Problems like you describe are common problems when users don't know how to make composite images well.   If you can do it well in CS6 I would think you can also do it well in CC and CC 2014 if you can not then there is a problem.  Please show the differences between version of Photoshop.

  • Footage pixelated when exported with compressor

I've film HD video and edited with FCP, the aspec ratio on the sequence is 720x480 anamorphic, and it looks great, when I export it with QuicK Time it looks great but DVD Studio Prp doesn't support the settings. when I export it with Compressor, DVD Studio Pro imports it fine, but it is very, very pixelated.
What would be the best option to use when exporting with Compressor.
What I want is that the WideScreen image shrinks when viewing it on a Standard TV, I've done it with iDVD but when watching it on a standard tv is cuts the two sides of the image.
    Thank you for your help.

If editing HD material you would be best off editing in the HD timeline, size and Codec (not sure if you did that and then down rezzed?) SD DVDs used compressed video, so anything that compresses things more prior to the compression to an SD m2v (video used on DVDs) can lead to more of a quality hit.
Anyway what you would do is export the movie as self-contained movie, reference movie or directly to Compressor to a 16:9 m2v preset (including one you made yourself) and use that in DVD SP

  • Avoid interlace combing when exporting to wmv

    Hi All,
I am running on an updated MBP with FCE 4 and flip4mac pro studio.
I can not seem to find an ideal setting when exporting to *.wmv to avoid interlace combing and poor quality (pixalated look).
Your guidance woudl be great ly appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Ronald,
In addition to Steve's very important questions, I have another:
What else is running on your computer (often launched "behind the scenes," at bootup), while you are editing? Most computers have a lot of unnecessary programs, and processes, that launch at start, and can really eat up computer resources. You can check to see what gets loaded with MSCONFIG, and then looking at the Startup and Services Tabs.
Good luck, and please let us know a bit more.

  • Canon HV20 24P HDV workflow, Some things with FCP and Quicktime are ODD.

Canon HV20, 24P, HDV, CMOS sensor...
First, I do hope and pray that the FCP dudes are making this work native at HDV 24p -- great!
But until then, there's a workflow (see below) and a real oddity I can't figure out, and if anyone has any thoughts about it that would be great.
Sometimes, the image captured/shown/exported is a lighter picture, and other capture/playing/export methods are darker picture. Example: the captured 60i from Final Cut Pro has a light gamma picture when viewed in Quicktime Player.
But playback in Final Cut Pro appears darker, and rich. But then exporting it out turns it light again, but export out to a MPEG-2 DVD is darker again? ODD.
Can anyone explain the FCP capture size of 1888 x 1062?
Anyhow, here is some workflow success that I had.
Capturing in Final Cut Pro using the HDV 1080/60i setting with HDV firewire basic NDF. But 60i is evil. So that's not enough. Got to get it to 24P,since that allows 20% more bandwidth, space, faster renders, and DVD players can play it.
Transcoding to a regular editing codec before converting to 24P is required. I found that MPEG Streamclip would create a wierd, jagged edges on small moving figures with high contrast, no matter what the settings, so I refuse to use it to export the footage.
So instead, FCP has an additional capture option of "Apple Intermediate Codec" or something like that, which transcribes it on the fly to AIC. I always stayed away from AIC like the plague, but they must have spent some time with it because it's nearly identical to the HDV original.
Next, open up in Quicktime Player, and start the clip on that second P frame. Sounds odd, I know. Goto the first interlaced frame, and back up two frames. Mark the "I", and then move that Out marker to the end, and then Trim the clip to the selection. Do that with all the clips, and then you can batch 24P them all.
If you don't want to find that one frame each time, here are the other settings:
First, open up the clip inside cinema tools, and then select Rev. Telecine button.
Find out which of these your clip is doing at the very beginning:
    p-p-i-i-p - aa
    p-i-i-p-p - bb
    i-p-p-p-i - bc
    p-p-p-i-i - cd
i-i-p-p-p - this is no good. must remove at least one frame from the beginning of source file
    i = interlaced frame
    p = progressive frame
all settings use the F1-F2, style one, standard upper/lower

Sometimes, the image captured/shown/exported is a lighter picture, and other capture/playing/export methods are darker picture. Example: the captured 60i from Final Cut Pro has a light gamma picture when viewed in Quicktime Player.
But playback in Final Cut Pro appears darker, and rich. But then exporting it out turns it light again, but export out to a MPEG-2 DVD is darker again? ODD.
This is known. This happens with ANY footage you look at in FCP and QT player. QT lightens the gamma of the footage. Why? Something to do with adjusting the image for computer monitors.

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

  • How to remove interlacing Premiere is adding on export?

I am using a Mac, and the first CC.
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
When ever I export video, it comes out interlaced. Doesn't matter what size or codec.
I also followed the steps here: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Interlacing and field order
    Original export
With Field options: reverse field dominance and de-interlace
Has anyone had this issue? Can anyone help me?

    CBR = Constant Bit Rate
    VBR = Variable Bit Rate
With Variable bit rate, you will typically be able to set the Min - Avg - Max bitrates, though some formats only show Target and Max (Target being the Average).
VBR uses a higher bitrate for complex, moving scenes and then for instance a static title it will compress at a much lower rate. This is "bit budgeting" to allocate the compression as needed based on the needs of each screen, therefore providing better overall quality by putting the data where it's needed. 2-Pass VBR actually analyzes the footage first to determine the best compression rates for all the scenes, then does the compression in the second pass. Takes longer, but usually with better results.
The screen grab you posted showed Target 10, Max 10, which doesn't make sense. CBR encodes all footage at the same rate regardless of scene complexity.
    Thanks
    Jeff

  • How to export movies with Single Field option on with QuickTime Pro?

    Hi,
I've got a rather problematic video file with MJPEG encoding in it. I've been able to save the original AVI into another QuickTime mov-file. Where I thought the deinterlace would help me to get rid of the horizontal lines in the picture, that option didn't work this time. Instead, if I use the Single Field option, I get at least a smooth picture.
But when I try to export this to another mov-file or any other format for a smaller file size, I never get the smooth picture to stay. And in the resulting files the interlace "effect" can't be removed even with that single field on again!
    I'm using QuickTime Pro 7.6.6.
    Anybody with a solution?

Where I thought the deinterlace would help me to get rid of the horizontal lines in the picture, that option didn't work this time. Instead, if I use the Single Field option, I get at least a smooth picture.
It's my understanding that these QT 7 Pro options are "playback only" property settings utilized by the QT Player and do do not have any effect on the export/re-compression of interlaced content. Have you tried exporting directly to a progressive codec option/setting in QT 7 Pro, tried the motion adaptive deinterlacer in MPEG Streamclip (free) or the JES Deinterlacer (free), or used the "decomb" filter option in HandBrake (free) to see if any of these approaches are more suited to your needs?

  • Few questions on exporting out with fce 3.5 for web distribution

Hello I have been trolling here for a few months reading up on things and I know my way around a search pretty well I have gotten some of these answers from reading but id like to have my own thread so I can keep it all in one place...
    First..
I run websites that need video's for surfers to be able to view.. these videos are in length from 20 min to 1 hour or longer... now I have figured out that when I render with the h.264 out sorry fce calls it export... I choose the quicktime setting of lan and it seems to be about right for what im used to in high quality from rendering out with pinnacle studio for a wmv or an mpeg.. now heres where I get confused with fce
I see there is a wmv setting to export to.. but when I do it.. it only exports a bit of it...
now these are the formats I want for video...
    .mov
    .wmv
    .mpg
I have compressor but I have no idea on the settings in there and can't find what I need
in those formats I would like to have a
    high
    med
    low
    as far as quality go's
can someone help me out so my life is easier please... in fact I have 50 bucks via paypal if I can get someone get my settings down right maybe even in compressor so I just have to edit... this part always messes with my head when it comes down to render out...
there has to be some editors on here that know excatly what im talking about without having to say it on here... if you want to chat in private you can email me chris (at) themibcorp (dot) com I will give you my ichat name from there maybe you can help me and ill help you with some paypal
I want the video to play on all forms of computers..
our's and the other kind.. LOL

This isn't something someone can decide for you. It's up to you ti make up your mind. Either will do the job. If you want to spend the time to experiment with settings to better suit your media and you know what you're doing and want to spend the money get the more expensive version. If you'll be happy to use the basic presets based on average media and file sizes then get the cheaper version.

"Invalid export DLL or export format" with Crystal Reports 2008
Posted: Sep 27, 2008 12:36 AM       E-mail this message      Reply
I've included this sticky because we are seeing many posts in this forum regarding the error Invalid export DLL or export format when exporting to Excel and RTF in .NET applications using the Crystal Reports 2008 .NET SDK.
    Issue
Exporting a Crystal Report to Excel or RTF format
.NET application using the Crystal Reports 2008 runtime (version 12.0)
error Invalid export DLL or export format
We've been doing some testing in-house and haven't reproduced this behavior. In order to figure this issue out we will need your help. If you are getting this error please reply to this post with the following information:
    Server Operating System
    Version of the .NET Framework
    How did you deploy?
If you deployed with CRRuntime_12_0_mlb.msi - what was the date of the file and its size?
What is the file version of crpe32.dll on your server? You'll find this in the C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\win32_x86 directory
How many libpng10.dll files are on your system? List all instances.
    Any additional comments
    What We Know
The error invalid export DLL or export format may occur when exporting to Excel and RTF formats in .NET applications utilizing the Crystal Reports 2008 runtime (v 12.0)
Other export formats like Adobe PDF, Crystal Reports, CSV all export with no error
Some customers have resolved this by adding C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\win32_x86 to their environment path variables
This may have something to do with the file libpng10.dll. Both crxf_xls.dll and crxf_rtf.dll are dependent on it.
Thanks in advance for your co-operation. We hope to figure out what is causing this issue soon.

    Hi,
I am also having the same problem, except that I am not using Crystal Report 2008 runtime but the actual Crystal Report 2008 installation on Windows XP SP2 with VS Studio 2005 (VC++). MS .NET Framework 2.0.
Cyrstal Report XIR2 was installed on the same machine but uninstalled before installing Crystal Report 2008.
So only one instance of libpng10.dll and found in C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\win32_x86
    Crpe32.dll        3/1/2008 version 12.0.0.683
    Crxf_xls.dll       3/1/2008 version 12.0.0.683
    Crxf_rtf.dll         3/1/2008 version 12.0.0.683
    crdb_oracle.dll  3/1/2008 version 12.0.0.683
    libpng10.dll       3/1/2008 version 1.0.30.0             122880 bytes
There is no problem for exporting to pdf, html, word, csv, Crystal Report. If I create a testing report without any data from database, the testing report can then be exported also to rtf and xls.
Oracle 11.1.0.6 is the DB for the reports.
Adding C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\win32_x86 to the path did not resolve my problem.
Any idea to fix this issue?
    Thanks

  • Error "Failed to Export PDF" with big image on CS6 (32) and CC (64)

    Hi everyone,
I'm on indesign CS6 (v8.0.2) and when I try to export pdf with a very big image ( *.tiff, 25000*35000 pixels, ) , the action failed with this message :" Failed to export a PDF".
To be sure that there is no any corrupted elements, I made a very simple layout (one page , and just one element for my image,I turnoff prefilgth and all  ressource intensive options, and export with no downsampling or resampling) and try to export with different size image:with 20000*30000 -or smaller -image the export works, always failed with image .The export failed to in scripting mode.
If I diveded my image in four , the export works but this solution is not convenient (I actually made tests for a fully automatised process, and we want to be sure that the indesign  component is  enough "safe")
I try the same action with an evaluation version of indesign CC 64 bits (v9.2) and have the same behavior.
I can imagine that there is a memory issue there, but my config seems to be strong ( windows server 64 with  16GB ram, DD with more than 100GB free). I don't undersant why-in a "full" 64 bit environnement- it is not possible to manipulate and export very large image ?
I'm wonder If the background task is a part of the problem, and if it 's possible to disable it in CS6 or CC as in cs5 ( creates an  “DisableAsyncExports.txt” file in  Adobe InDesign executable directoty don't seems to disable it  in CC or CS6).
Thank you for your help and good ideas..
    DC.

this is a .tif (not a "big"tiff) compressed in LZW or ZIP.
I just tried with another format (png), the error is the same...
