Interlacing headaches

I've been given some ProRes files to work from in order to do an edit and make a DVD. The edit looks great in Final Cut, yet when I import the encoded in Compressor files into DVD Studio Pro I'm getting really awful 1-3 frame combing on some scene changes.
Some info on the two files I have been supplied with:
1.  A film-sourced NTSC to PAL conversion (23.976 converted to PAL 25fps)
2.  A film-sourced PAL 25fps  telecine
I've edited the files together on a ProRes timeline and have exported to Compressor with "Progressive" selected as the output file.
Can anybody suggest a solution for this? It's driving me crazy.

Long discussion on this last week. If it started off interlaced, leave it interlaced. Especially if you're mastering to DVD.

  • X200s - 50Hz interlaced display mode only... What a headache!

    Bought X200s (1440x900 resolution) recently.
Have found it to be very bad for my eyes.
I've used to work on my aforetime Quanta for hours w/o any problems.
Now with X200s I do have blearing eyes and headache very soon.
Investigating the problem I've found that the best (and the only) display resolution possible is 50Hz.
Moreover, only interlaced display mode is possible, even with native resolution!
So the best mode we have with the newest X200s is 50Hz interlaced...
Well, I've seen such LCD monitors when I was young (that was ages ago)...
    But now???
I wonder if there is any other notebook (either netBook) on the market now with maximum refresh rate less then 60Hz?
    No fear!
I'm definitely sure that Lenovo should recall this piteous product ASAP.

    @lead_org
I do not compare CRT to LCD at all.
    To be more clear:
    1. All modern LCD screens (including all laptop screens currently on market) hold at least 60Hz refresh rate/non-interlaced mode.
    2. Whereas cheap laptop LCDs work usually at not more then 60Hz, good screens possess 75Hz and sometimes 90Hz rates.
    3. Only very old LCD screens (10+ years ago) had 50Hz of refresh rate maximum and could work utilising interlaced modes only.
    4. The common notion states that any good LCD (not CRT) screen must render 60Hz refresh rate at least.
On smaller CRT monitors (~<14 inches) few people notice any discomfort below 60–72 Hz. On larger CRT monitors (~>17 inches) most people would experience mild discomfort unless the refresh is set to a more comfortable 85 Hz or higher. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refresh_rate)
Some major manufactures consider 60Hz to be unsufficient, offering 75Hz-capable laptop screens.
    5. Low refresh rate setting affects the LCD’s performance (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22119?viewlocale=en_US etc. etc.).
So, am I wrong? Or is the market wrong?
Are there any other laptops with 50Hz (interlaced) maximum refresh rate I'm not aware of?
    I doubt if any.
Back on topic: with new X200s (1440x900), I have 90Hz (non-interlaced) on external 17" 1280x1024 Sony LCD monitor, and up to 100Hz on external 20" NEC LCD monitor (any resolution).
    Both have a great picture.
50Hz interlaced is definitely the laptop screen limitation, not of the Intel 4 Series Express graphic adapter.
I've tried the older X200s (1280x800), which runs at 60Hz non-interlaced and does have a good stable picture.
Did Lenovo accomplish a product invention, or there is a sales pitch of cheap screens below standards?
BTW, in some countries LCD screens with refresh rates below 60Hz are prohibited by public health regulations.

  • Interlaced DVD on (Progressive) HDTV....

I recently (finally) upgraded to an HDTV, and maybe I'm just looking for things, or things are simply more noticable, but......
You know how if you export to DV-AVI, and then watch it in Windows Media Player, it looks all horrible because the file is interlaced and WMP doesn't de-interlace it for display on an LCD monitor?
Well, I could swear I'm seeing the same thing on my HDTV. It's nowhere near as bad, and really only appears to happen in areas where there's motion, but it really does look interlac-y in parts.
Am I hallucinating? Seeing things that aren't there? Are my college years finally catching up to me? Or am I seeing something that's similar to, but different, from interlaced video on a progressive screen?
Everything I can find on the net refers to the NTSC standard and regular TVs (i.e. interlaced), and I can't find anything on the fact that HDTVs are progressive, but accept progressive (480p, 720p, 1080p) and interlaced(1080i)? What a rabbit hole.
    If details matter:
*Source video is DV-AVI (BFF interlaced)
*I export project pieces to DV-AVI (also BFF interlaced)
*Exported DV-AVI now becomes source for final project
*From PRE, I burn the DVD to a folder (VOB shows MPEG-2, BFF interlaced)
*I burn the folder to DVD using imgBurn
*I play the DVD on a normal, non-upscaling DVD player
*DVD player is connected via Component cable to my HDTV (480p input???)
At some point, I'm assuming the MPGEG-2 interlaced video is de-interlaced, by not sure by whom (DVD player, HDTV?)???

    Paul,
Thanks. I have a Vizio, for whatever that's worth. So basically there's nothing I can do that will affect the de-interlacing quality one way or another.
Just for educational sake... does my DVD player put out 480p (which would mean the DVD player is de-interlacing?), or does it still put out interlaced... what... 480i? It's a low-end, non-upscaling model.
An experiment I haven't tried is playing the DVD through my Xbox. I thought I read somewhere the Xbox would upscale a normal DVD to 720p. But my HDMI Xbox connection is 1080i. So I get a headache thinking what would happen there! :)

  • Interlacing? Exporting from FCE to iDVD

I have spent the last 2 months and many many hours working on this project for a banquet. I finally finished it late last night, and now I have spent the last 8 hours trying to make a DVD out of it.
I tried "export>quicktime movie" as well as "export>using quicktime" conversion. I import it into iDVD and burn the DVD and I get a headache trying to watch it on my TV or on my mac. anything with motion flickers and seems to have ghosts. from what I have been reading, this is interlacing?
Does anyone know how I can fix it? I have tried so many different things, (since this has come up before) and 5 wasted DVDs late, I still can't seem to fix it.
The Camcorder I used is a JVC EVERIO GZ-MG630RU. I imported all of my clips into imovie, exported as an XML file for FCE and Imported the iMovie XML into FCE.
If anyone knows how I can get rid of this problem please help me. I don't want to give 400+ people a headache for an hour!

Also,I took a few clips and edited the frames in corel painter 11 then exported them as .mov files. These clips all look fine. I guessing the way I imported the rest of the video into FCE is the problem but I don't have enough time to redo the whole movie so i'm looking for a way to fix it.

  • Interlacing Issue - DV PAL to Uncompressed**

    Hi there,
Please forgive me if this has been covered previously.
I have read the "Sending back to FCP from Color**" post, but it's a slightly different problem I have.
Original FCP timeline is DV PAL Lower Field. Used the Send To Color command and graded. I render out of Color at 10 Bit Uncompressed.
In FCP I change the (from Color) timeline to 10 Bit Uncompressed (Upper Field therefore). So I have Upper Field 10 Bit clips in and Upper Field 10 Bit timeline; no green, yellow or red bars...
But the footage is all jittery when playing back on the broadcast monitor. And no changing of the field settings seems to fix anything.
The only fix is to apply a "Shift Field" plugin, and then it plays back perfectly... So it's definately an interlace issue.
Is anyone else having the same issues ? What am I doing wrong ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    ps.
Original timeline sent to Color was 16.9 Anamorphic

COLOR 1.0, or as it could be referred to: "Final Touch 2.8", seems to prefer progressive streams. Interlacing has been a headache for a long time. The ColorFX room is especially a chamber of horrors.
FT was designed, from the ground up, to grade sequential dpx/cin files. But consumers demanded a Quicktime HD solution. Does that help explain a few things?
If you're aiming for a 10-bit finish...from 8 bit material-- I know it baffles most engineers how so many people expect to get more colour resolution that way, when it never existed in the first place -- you only get so many rungs on a stepladder no matter how closely you try to space them out-- maybe going into COLOR 10-bit would be a better approach than trying to push it up within the app. The sad stories about trying to leverage the render into another codec are legion.

  • FCP keeps exporting progressive ProRes files as Interlaced

I have captured a clip from tape using 1920x1080 25i setting on Kona3 card with the ProRes HQ codec. The tape is progressive but there was no option to capture 1080 25psf so I was informed that 1080 25i would be fine.
FCP states the clip has Upper field dominance so I set it to 'None' and dropped it into a 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 25fps sequence.
The Sequence timeline settings were 'None' and the Prores Advanced codec options the Interlaced option was also unchecked. All fine, exported the clip based on Current Settings to render a new (progressive) Quicktime.
I then reimported the rendered clip it back into FCP and it stated that the rendered clip is still Upper Field dominant. Short of reencoding through Compressor (v slow and creates a second generation encoded file) I cannot seem to get FCP to export this material as progressive.
Is there a way I can just change the Field Dominance flag/tag of the clip within FCP or another application to "None" withut any rerenders/encodes?
Any help gladly appreciated as this is becoming a real mystery/headache!

    Jerome Colas wrote:
If I manually change it for every source file to progressive (which should be done automaticallt by Compressor), I then get a progressive output.
But that defeats Compressor's purpose and is a source for error.
    Jérôme.
I'm not sure what this means.
And I wonder whether it's a metadata thing and, and while disconcerting, whether it will have any practical effect on your project.
As a test try a single clip. Turn on frame controls with output fields set to progressive. See if it is now identified correctly. If it is bring that into FCP and compare against that against the one that is identified as interlaced.
If Frame Controls doesn't work, then I think I would use MPEG Streamclip. It's fast and has a very good batch feature.
    Good luck.

  • Software update, nothing but headaches.....

About two weeks ago, I woke up to a message on my phone that said a software update had been downloaded and the phone needed to restart to install. I wish I'd known then what a headache this was going to cause me.
A few days later I noticed that my phone wasn't ringing, my notification sounds weren't playing, and my alarm was going off on the screen but no sound. I always use my phone as my alarm clock, but can't trust it now. I turned my phone off and back on and the problem resolved. It has done it 5 or 6 more times since then. I'm on call for my job every three weeks, and I couldn't trust that my phone was going to ring this past week. Very frustrating.
I've also had an increase in problems making calls and typing text messages. When I try to make a call it acts like it is connecting but I don't hear the phone ring or anything. My husband said it is connecting, and he can hear me, but I can't hear anything. When typing text messages, it will freeze up and I have to exit the message and go back in before it will let me type.
I'm loathe to do a factory reset because of the amount of time it takes to get the phone back to the way I like it. Is this going to be my only option? When I first got my Droid 2, it was replaced twice in the first three months because I had nothing but problems. The 2nd time was a refurbished Droid 2 Global and it has been an OK phone. I've spent so much time dealing with technical issues though that I'm about ready to send Verizon a bill for my time.
I'm not able to upgrade until August, but I can assure you I will never buy another Motorola phone.
Is anyone else having the same problems since the update? Any solutions to the problems I'm having?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode and see if the device works as needed?   Try follow these steps and if this doesnt help then I would say its time to try a hared reset because issues do have a habit of showing its evil head after a update because of the update process changes and updates files but doesnt delete any personal settings and the old settings sometimes cause issues..
Try booting in Safe Mode and then consider a Hard Rest.
    Enable Safe Mode
Press and hold the Power button.
    Select Power off.
    Slide the keyboard open.
    Press the Power button.
Press and hold the OK key.
Continue to hold the OK key until Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the unlock screen.
This may take up to 30 seconds.
While in Safe Mode, remove the most recently installed applications.
Power cycle the device then attempt to use the device.
If the device works properly, install applications one at a time to identify the application causing the problem.

  • Mac mini on a LCD TV which does not support interlace mode

    Dear all,
I am going to buy a new Mac mini and I wish to connect it to a Samsung LCD TV 37A656A1F (serie 6.
The TV manual says that it does not support the interlace mode. I then deduce that it supports progressive mode only.
My question: Does it mean that this LCD TV model cannot be used as a monitor for a Mac mini?
Please give a help to me

All computer monitors are progressive mode displays. Therefore all computers, including the mini, are very comfortable running progressive mode. It is their natural state. It is more a problem when a computer has to run interlace mode in order to support a display. That is when there is trouble. So I think you have nothing to worry about if your Samsung runs in progressive mode.

  • New iPod Touch, Can't get iTunes to work, extra headaches

    Hello,
This is my first day in the Apple world: I caved and thought it would be good to get a new mp3/video player after my last one died. I ended up getting a 4th Gen Black iPod Touch - not sure if the color matters, but why not?
Anyway, my second problem (first being the weird packaging, of tape through plastic then stuck on) started with iTunes: the thing just would NOT download. Every time I tried, the website kept saying "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to completecould not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." That's just great: I can't get any music or video ONTO my iTouch without iTunes...right?
After browsing around I found an older version of iTunes that seemed to work. Yay! But not really. Nobody ever mentioned that .flac and .avi files can't be imported into iTunes at all...so I had to go hunting online for third party converters. This took care of THAT problem...
However, now that conversion is up, the older version of iTunes won't pick up my iPod Touch and Sync it. There is actually a "Sync iPod" button under "File" tab, but it's grayed out and I can't use it.
Not entirely sure if this is why, but according to a few people, when a new iTunes comes out, the older one stops functioning as fully as it originally did, forcing people to upgrade their iTunes in order to make it work like normal.
I tried to find a third party program to pick up my iPod Touch so I could upload files, but no luck. I feel like an idiot for not knowing how to turn source code into a program, and the binary installers I did find were user-hostile (ie. Right clicking to bring up a menu actually plays the movie and there's no stop button, you have to end task from the task manager). Windows Explorer only shows one folder in my iPod Touch, which is empty and four letters long, which gives no clue as to what it is.
So here's my big question: now that I finally am fully ready to upload my files to my iPod Touch, I can't. Why?
Is it my version of iTunes? Why can't I download iTunes' newest version? Why does updating from the older version yield the same result (though I'm sure both installers are the same)? Is there another way to get all my media onto my device?
Thanks in advance...talk about a four hour headache...

I've used the Reset Network Settings feature in my iPod Touch after every failed attempt to connect to my wireless network. I've also reset the wireless access point and router after making changes to them.
It appears that my Touch is finding the wireless network, accepting the security password/key, and connecting to the wireless access point and router (I get a full signal on the strength indicator). However, the Touch appears to be acquiring the IP Address automatically, right? Thus, it gets the IP Address starting with "169". If I can manually set up the TCP/IP settings, I believe I can get it to connect. Is there a way to set up the TCP/IP settings manually?

  • Choosing Office 2013 volume licensing plan ... or going retail ... or subscription ... or hunting for 2010 ... what a headache ...

Our company currently runs an office software equivalent comparable to Office 2003 level. I was researching options (licensing!) for stepping up our office to real Microsoft Office product ... and got stuck with that idea ... totally confused at this point.
Am I missing something or the cheapest SMB volume licensing option for MS Office 2013 (Standard, no Access component) is like twice as expensive as the retail equivalent? Why is that so? It makes no sense to me at all.
I can find retail box of Office 2013 Home and Business for around $190 while the cheapest Open License for similar equivalent seems to be priced at $369 (what!?) ... and that is even without Software Assurance?
Makes it kinda hard to convince management about benefits of VL program over retail ... especially since we are not a Volume Licensed customer (yet) and this purchase *might* make it worth becoming one (does it?).
On top of that I can't even make decision if we should really go with Office 2013 after reading about live/online account requirement for activation, and here a question how does it work in volume licensing version? I assume it will be a great pain with
installs from retail media and activation, but VL should have some tools or workarounds for that, no? I read that Office 2010 didn't have such problems and am sad I didn't push towards it when it was still available on retail market.
Maybe we should go with 2013 subscription for first year and see how that works for us ...
One thing for sure, I've been digging around this subject for weeks and my headache doesn't want to go away.
    Open to suggestions.

    anybody, any insights?
Pls, also note that I run a one person IT department for this company, so all the dirty work (installs) will be done by me, hence my question. I can do deployments via GPO, but would like to know about activation gotchas (MS live accounts) for Office 2013,
is that true for retail licenses?
As per Volume Licensing, am I looking right and cheapest 1 computer Office 2013 open license stands for like $369? why is i so expensive in volume licensing plans? I doubt our management approves it this way ... which probably means retail licensing for
me and a great headache with activations over a sneaker net ... times 30 ...

  • Why is the Mini Interlacing 1080p?

    Hello All,
I recently purchased the prior 2011 Mac Mini with the following specs:
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB
    OS X 10.8.4
I also purchased an Asus 22" LED HD, (1080p) screen (VS229H-P) that I've attached via hdmi.
On my desktop and in most programs everything looks fantastic on screen and is perfectly clear. However an interesting things keeps happening every time I play a game in full screen mode. If I keep the game in full screen resolution of 1920x1080, it appears to convert to 1080i. The screen, while visible, appears to take on this distorted vibrating motion that is consistent with what I know happens with interlacing. I also tested this out of game by changing my desktop resolution in "display preferences" to 1080i instead of 1080p, and it did exactly the same thing, which confirmed my suspicion that it was interlacing.
When I take the game out of full screen mode and put it in windowed mode at the 1920x1080 resolution, it's crystal clear, no interlacing. As soon as it's back to full screen, interlacing is back.
I've tested this with multiple games and of the 10 I've tested only three do not interlace, two of those three happen to be purchased through the app store. Unfortunately I'm limited on trying alternative connection options since the mini only has hdmi, or thunderbolt connections - no mini display port. The screen only accepts hdmi, dvi or avg. While I know there are converter adaptars like hdmi to dvi, I'm hesitant to jump in and buy them as I don't know if they'll resolve the issue.
Question here is, why is this happening? Is it an application error, or a mac error in transmitting the hd signal to my screen? Is it possible to change the way my mini is transmitting the signal to each game? Might there be some setting I need to check on my monitor that I've missed?
I currently play in windowed mode or at a lower resolution which works, but is less than satisfactory for me and I'd like to explore a solution if one exists.
Any help or if others have had similar experiences and had any work arounds that they could share, would be sincerely appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

It is a game error.    Contact the game publisher and tell them which games don't do this.   Many games have preferences within the game themselves to choose the display preferences.  Some games love to force screen settings on you.

  • Interlace problems with moving objects using iDVD

I had an MP4 file (created by a 3rd party) from a Hi-8 analog tape which has some interlace artifacts on moving images (left image of boy) but not too bad. When the MP4 files was imported into iMovie 11 the interlace artifacts smoothed somewhat - that was OK (right image of boy). The camera was still and the boy was moving.  Vertical lines on stationary objects are OK in all images. These are screen captures from the Mac of the mp4 played through quicktime and the same file imported into iMovie 11 and played.  I paused both to take the screen capture.
The completed project in iMovie 11 looked OK when previewed prior to rendering. These are 20 year old videos so my expections were being met.   I rendered the project with iDVD to the hard drive first and then to a DVD with the same poor imaging result on the moving object.  I am using a new Macbook Pro I bought in early January which came with iMovie 11 and iDVD  Ver 7.1.2 (1158). Running Mac OS X 10.7.3  Macbook Pro  2.3 Ghz Corei7   8GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.
I couldn't screen capture from the MAC DVD player screen to illustrate the poor result (got a checkerboard screen) so I took a photo of the screen and imported that (below).  The moving boy on the left is from an  iMovie 11 screen capture, the image on the right is the moving boy from the rendered DVD I paused on the Mac (and took a pic of).
Below a close up of the poorly rendered moving boy viewed on the resultant DVD.  This translates into a horrible rendition of any quick moving object.  It happens with any moving image - i.e. a pan across a room with straight vertical lines like edges of a wall will show as serrated and poorly rendered edge. I used a trial version of the Daniusoft DVD creator with the same result!  I am at a loss on how to resolve this issue.  Any thoughts out there??
I had previously used Pinnacle Studios on my old XP PC which worked great on other tape's Mpeg files and created great DVD's (never had an interlace problem) ... until my computer died .....  so I figured Apple and associated software should be at least equal if not a superior product.   Now I'm not too sure!

  • How can I determine if certain footage is interlaced or progressive?

    Hi everyone,
I shoot and edit my own ski/snowboard films every year. I use a Sony HDV V1U. When filming, I constantly switch between 30p and 60i depending on the shots. I do this because 60i can provide smoother slow motion in post. Problem is, when I am editing the footage, it is extremely difficult to tell what's progressive and what's interlaced. My computer monitor, like all, is progressive, so interlaced footage looks just like 30p. One way I can tell is by adjusting the clips speed to slow motion, then judging by how Premiere handles the frame blending, I know what it is. But that is not practical for a massive project. A simple solution would be preveiwing on an external monitor, but from what I have read you cannot stream HDV back to a camera from the timeline, and I do not have money for a special capture card.
So my question is, is there any way to playback HDV on an external monitor (my TV or camera LCD) without a special capture card, or is there another easy way to determine 60i from 30p on Premiere's timeline? Thanks.
    Here's my specs:
    Premiere Pro CS3
    Sony HDV V1U camcorder
    Windows vista 64bit

I have been filming this way for years, and mixing the 2 record modes is definately the way to go.  In my past projects, I was working with DV so it was not a problem.
