Interlacing issue when zooming in on photo in FCP

Can anyone tell me why this image (picture 1) looks interlaced in FCP's Canvas window and on my NTSC broadcast monitor when in fact it isn't?
I scanned this image at 600dpi planning to zoom in on the photo in FCP, so I know it's not a low resolution issue.
In FCP, when I zoom in on the image it looks totally interlaced:
Please see picture 1 (interlacing issue) here in my web gallery and compare with Picture 2.

I have no idea what's causing this. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
- Nicholas

Hi David,
Thank you very much for your help. Yes, I did render the timeline. Nothing in the sequence was left unrendered. Is the problem that my resolution is too high? Should I diminish the size of the still by 50%?
Picture 1 was scanned using "descreen" filter and picture 2 using Auto Tone only. I used a Canoscan Cannon 8800F scanner. That's as much as I know. I wonder if I did something wrong scanning the image or is there something I should have done in Photoshop prior to bring the still into FCP?
Did you notice the horizontal line issue in Picture 1? I'm not sure how to describe it, but Picture 1 looks to me like there some interlacing issue going on.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

  • Interlacing issues when authoring a DVD (PE9)

I have a project on Elements 9 that needs to be put on a DVD, and while I did this before with some success, I am now faced with an output DVD with serious interlacing effects. It shows up on pretty much anything that moves, as shown in this image.
The source video is 1024p at 59.94fps imported as MTS files, and I am trying to burn onto a DVD-RW disc. I have been looking for a solution to no avail, but I will continue searching the forums as this is a somewhat urgent problem. Any help would be appreciated.
    Here are my project settings:
    Capture format: HDV
    Optimize stills
I have set everything to NTSC since this is a Japanese camera and I assume the video is as such. I'm not sure what other information to give, but please let me know if I should include anything else.

Yes, the video is from a DSLR - not sure what qualifies as "high-end", but in my opinion the video is good quality: http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/2129937/index.html
As far as the reviews are concerned, the 1080i has some noticeable interlacing issues, but the 720p looks nice.
I tried burning this straight to DVD through PE9, and I also simply made a DVD folder and tested that. Both were of the same poor quality. As I don't own a TV I can't test it on anything else, but I'm fairly certain that this is not an issue with the playback software (which, in my case, is VLC). This will eventually be presented on a digital projector which at this point in time I can't test the DVD on until shortly before this is made public. Going to bet on the safe side and assume that if it looks bad on my PC then it will look bad everywhere else. (my future prospects with this company are on the line, I should mention)
Since I'm in a bit of a rush (weekend deadline) I've come up with the (hopefully temporary) solution of creating an mpeg, turning that into an ISO and burning that onto a DVD. It adds an unnecessary step in the conversion process, but at this point in terms of quality it is the better option, hands-down. Still looking for a way to burn straight from PE9 to DVD since I do notice a slight resulting choppiness with the mpeg route.

  • Kona capture card interlacing issues

Anyone have interlacing issues when capturing with a AJA Kona card. I see small horizontal lines when pausing the action and when there's alot of movement (hand waving, mouth moving etc).

What sort of footage are you capturing? There are interlaced tape formats...LOTS of them. When you pause, yes, you will see interlaced lines.
And are you looking at this footage on an external monitor?

  • Toon Boom Quicktimes in FCP... Interlacing Issues

    Hi,
I've been rendering out Quicktimes out of Toon Boom Studio 4.5 and bringing them into Final Cut Pro for editing.
I'm getting really bad interlacing issues when playing back on moving objects, particularly on the 1080i plasma I'm using for monitoring. However when paused the image looks sharp.
The animation is a 1920 x 1080 project in Toon boom, and I'm bringing it into a 1920 x 1080 60i ProRes Sequence. I've tried exporting from Toon Boom to ProRes HQ and Animation quicktimes (both interlaced and progressive), as well as exporting image sequences and bringing them into after effects to export to ProRes. All with the same results.
Interestingly the quicktimes play in a preview-like quality when played in the viewer in FCP. However when I drop them into a ProRes (non-HQ) timeline and render, they look as they should but with bad interlacing issues on moving objects. Dropping the ProRes HQ quicktimes into a ProRes HQ sequence play in a preview-like mode too.
Anyone had any experience working with animation files from Toon Boom? I've had similar issues with QTs from Anime Studio Pro but they weren't really noticeable once rendered in the timeline.
    Thanks in advance

Hi X, sorry for the delay.
If I drop a 30fps ProRes HQ quicktime into a 1030p ProRes HQ sequence, I get the preview-like quality I wrote about earlier.
However if I change the sequence compressor to regular ProRes and render, it displays sharp as it should but still has the bad interlacing. The plasma I'm monitoring with can't display 108030p though so I'm judging this from an apple cinema display.
Exporting from this timeline to 108060i ProRes has the same problem.
Do you think it's possible the characters in the cartoon move too great a distance between frames that it's causing this issue?
    Thanks

  • Interlaced? (jagged lines) issue when burning a disc

I uploaded some standard definition DVD-R footage into my 2011 iMac (550gb). To get the DVD-R's vob footage into FCPX for editing, I first transferred the vob's to QT MOV's via MPEG Streamclip. I then imported it into FCPX as is (SD 640x480), then edited and completed my project without any issues or problems in FCPX.
My plan was to burn the finished project back to an standard definition DVD-R. I wanted to try it via four ways. 1) Burn the disc straight from FCPX. 2) Burn the project as an IMG to my hard drive and make the disc later. 3) Export the finished project as an H.264 QT MOV (at 640x480) and then burn the disc via Compressor. 4) Burn the H.264 MOV via Toast.
Here's the big problem: When it was time to either burn the project straight from FCPX to a DVD-R, or take my QT MOV of the same project and burn a disc via Compressor or Toast, the finished DVD-R, when played on a DVD player or in my Mac showed MAJOR interlacing issues (those jagged wiggly lines on people's bodies, especially during camera movement).
So what's strange is, the QT MOV files and the VOB files that I exported to my hard drive from FCPX (before actually making the disc) look and sound perfect. But when I try to burn the actual disc via FCPX, or Compressor, or Toast, the interlacing issues (jagged lines) appear every time. So it's obvious to me that there's something that the disc burning process, itself, doesn't like, or is having issues with. (I tried changing it Progressive and nothing gets rid of those jagged lines.
Any advice or help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Then it's probably not interlacing.
Post a screen shot of a frame before you imported into FCP and another sceen shot shot after exporting.
(Or is you'd prefer, upload a short section to Dropbox so we can see it and test it first hand.)
I used h.264 because there was no alternative.
I don't understand that; if you export as a master file, you should have a whole bunch of codec options.

To take a screenshot of the zoomed photo, press either the key combination

My 6 month old Mac is using iPhoto. As I said before I am reluctanct to delete and reinstall the iPhoto as I only have the one copy of the file i am using stored in iphoto file and I caint loose them.
All storage hardware and all computers will fail.  Volumes will get corrupted.  Mistakes will happen.
Please learn from our past mistakes and from our past data losses: please have and keep regular backups.
Either via Time Machine (which is marvelously transparent, and very easy), or backups created via some other mechanisms and tools.  Old Toad recommends an external disk, and that's very effective.  If this is a portable Mac, then Time Capsule devices are also very handy, as you don't have to remember to connect the backup device; so long as the Mac is within wireless range of the Time Capsule, backups will happen.
Time Machine backups can also be used to replace your files or even to upgrade to a new Mac, should your computer be lost or stolen, or should your computer or your storage fail.
If you have not already seen these, Mac Basics and Find Out How could be interesting.
As for your photos...   I wouldn't expect this to be iPhoto and wouldn't go for an iPhoto reinstall as the first step, I'd tend to wonder if this is a bug or feature in Microsoft Word, or possibly a format incompatibility with what Office supports.  iPhoto organizes and edits the photos that are stored in your ~/Pictures media directory.  Try using iWork (if you have that) or some other tool (Apple Mail) that accepts and processes photos, and see if you can localize the problem.  Depending on the image formats used, also see if exporting the picture from iWork into a jpeg-format picture — something other than the image format you're currently using with the Microsoft Office imports — works.  (FWIW, I use iWork for reading and writing Microsoft Office documents as well as Pages and Keynote files, and have been using iPhoto with those and other tools for many years, and haven't encountered these blacked-out images.)

hi, when zooming in to capture still images, the image is really blurred and out of focus. is this a hardware issue and is there any solution for this?? or is my device faulty?

If you are using the iPhone camera zoom then remember that this is a digital zoom not an optical zoom. The zoomed in area will have fewer pixels and not appear as clear. The more you zoom the worse it gets. It's like cropping a picture after it has been taken.

  • Grainy Photos When Zoomed

I transferred some photos to my iPod Touch. They look great fullscreen, but when I zoom into them they look very grainy as if they have been recompressed. Is this what's supposed to happen? What's the point of being able to zoom into a photo, if all the detail of clarity of the original photo is lost via syncing with iTunes?

yeah you would think that they would at least support a resolution up to whatever the maximum zoom is on the ipod. I don't know if that sentence even makes sense but you probably get what I mean.

  • Issue when posting comments along with a photo to facebook.

    Hi
When i firs got my phone around 2 months ago, all was cool.
Now, when i post a photo to facebook's Xperia album, i'm asked if i want to write a comment along with the photo, i write a comment, then press 'post' The comment is never posted. This seems to happen when i post the photo to the Xperia album as i want to have a record of pics taken on this phone.
In accounts, i have an 'Xperia with facebook' account & a 'facebook' account, should these be synced, what is the difference between the 2 & could this be the reason for the issue?
    Many Thanks
    Rup

I just tested this here and it seems like there's an issue with the latest version of Facebooks app. If i upload a photo to one of my albums (doesn't matter which album) using it and add a comment, the comment is never added to the picture on Facebook. It doesn't matter if i share the photo from Album or if i open Facebooks app and upload it from there with a comment.
I reported it as an issue to Facebook using their app and i recommend that you also do this.
Beside the option to use the web version of Facebook (www.facebook.com/m.facebook.com/touch.facebook.com) you have two apps in your phone for Facebook. The first is the Facebook app made by Facebook and the other is Xperia with Facebook made by us. Xperia with Facebook is designed to synchronize certain data with Facebook like pictures to Album.
But due to API changes made by Facebook we are however in the process of phasing out Xperia with Facebook and some functionality has already been removed. In our latest software, there's no option to upload a picture with Xperia with Facebook so you need to use Facebooks app.

  • Small issue when viewing photos

Hi, I only got my Xperia Z2 today and I've noticed something going on when i view photos that wasn't happening earlier. When I take a photo with the camera in the camera app it's fine and looks good, but then when I go to view it by pressing the little thumbnail in the camera app the photo is always displayed in landscape and for some reason seems to dim and darken considerably after a second or two. This only happens when i view the photo in the camera app, if I exit the app and go to the photos app it works fine.  Anyone know why this happens and how to change it? Is it some sort of power saving thing because I'm at around 1/3 battery? Any help is appreciated

  • Issues when uploading  photos to Lightroom 5

I have Lightroom 5 and a Mac computer
Uploaded photos via card reader to Computer.
Lightroom Opened but would not show previews. - said show source - would not open the previews on the imported photos
When I tried to activate the source to upload my photos - all when blank after 1 second of showing information (Photos) that were the previews. - then went blank
I stopped the process and ejected the card correctly through the finder.  Thought I would try importing via image capture.
This was also a problem as the  previews only showed as a flash of a second.
I also notice that for some reason Lightroom 4 keeps on opening when importing photos and not Lightroom 5 - Though Lightroom 5 opens up when I edit other photos.
    Please advise
    Sue

There are several reasons why Lr would not show <Source>.
    - check the card reader and usb cable;
    - if it is an older card reader make sure that it is compatible with the cards you are using ( I had an older one; it would take the latest SD cards physically but was unable to read them, and it would not show up in Lr "Source");
Try to import from this card reader via Mac Finder. if this works then the card reader and USB cable are fine.
There is a box in >Edit >Preferences >General tab under "Import Options", it is called <Show Import Dialog when a memory card is detected>. You might have that checked in Lr4 but not in Lr5. But this would have nothing to do with the problem that Lr5 cannot import.
