Interlacing problem - display issue or something else?
Hi, another interlacing question...
So I captured my footage (originally shot on film, telecined to digibeta) at 10 bit uncompressed to do my online (the offline edit was a 29.97 DVCam dub of that digibeta). Since I'm finishing on 29.97 digibeta, I didn't remove the pulldown as I captured offline or online, and am editing both at my finishing medium's frame rate. So yes, I have the duped fields in there, but it also keeps things simple and I've theoretically been seeing exactly what the finished version will look like the whole time.
Last time I did this workflow I used a G4 running a dual 867 processor with a gig of RAM, and I had some jitter and interlacing "comb" visible when I watched the 10-bit on the Mac, but when I output to digibeta and DVD, it looked fine. So it appeared to be that my computer simply didn't have the juice to display it properly, but that the media itself was fine, as were both ways of outputting.
Now I have a spankin' new Mac Pro with a quad 2.66G processor and 3Gigs of RAM, so I figured that "display issue" was behind me. But not only do I still see jitter and comb on my computer monitor, I also see it much worse on the test DVD I just made. So the problem isn't just the display. The look is very similar to when you capture a clip and remove the pulldown, but fail to start capture on an A frame (but since this is all 29.97, I know that isn't the problem).
I thought it might be that the drives were not fast enough, so I reformatted two of my internal drives into a Raid 0 and put the media there and reconnected it. The raid seems happy, and it's less than half full, but the video doesn't look any better.
Any idea what else could be causing this? I did just upgrade the project from the FCP 4.5 version I started to the FCP 6 on the new machine, plus my experience has been that moving from offline DV to online can allow in some bugs, but the ins/outs, clip names, frame rates, haven't changed. And of course I've been editnig 29.97 DV this whole time without seeing any of the interlacing on the monitor or tyhe outputs. Could field dominance have anything to do with this? I've never adjusted that in previous applications of this workflow, so it doesn't seem relevant, but I confess I'm not sure what I'm messing with there. Do I need still more RAM? The computers we ran at school a couple of years ago were running 10 bit video on G5s without significant upgrades to my knowledge, and this is just a single stream with a few tracks of audio here. I'm afraid to spend any more $$ until I'm pretty confident it'll solve the problem (shoestring budget here of course). Any thoughts?
Many thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I don't really have a way to hook up my computer to a broadcast monitor. I know I should, but can't really afford the card to do it. So I color corrected my footage carefully during telecine, and for things like this issue, I'm making DVDs quick and dirty through iDVD, then watching them on my home TV (an LCD that plays both SD and HD).
I suppose something in my DVD player and/or TV might be giving me the weirdness in the display, but I think I mentioned I did this same workflow before on a lowly G4, and back then while the computer display showed the interlacing problems, the final output looks fine on the same TV/DVD setup I'm using now. (And I also output that timeline on the previous project to a digibeta master and it looked great too--unfortunately no way to test that digibeta output on the present project without going to a post house, which of course cuts into the budget.)
Maybe I need to bite the bullet and stop being so cheap, but I'm hung up on the fact that it worked fine before, and I can't see how this stronger computer is performing comparatively poorly.
BTW I do see the interlacing in FCP viewer and canvas, but only when it's set to 100% size. And it looks identical in Quicktime as well.
The other thought that just occurred to me is that it might be a codec issue. Perhaps the uncompressed 10 bit codec on my new machine isn't quite the same 10 bit uncompressed as the Kona card used to capture the video for both new and old projects. Maybe my old computer worked ok because that codec was slightly different, or I may have even copied the codec to that computer at some point in the past.
Any of this spur any other ideas? Again I really appreciate the help...

Downloading a file would normally bring up an option to open the file with the appropriate program or save it - for some reason now it just downloads straight to the download folder. Why? Problem with Firefox or something else? It's very frustrating - sometimes you want the file opened first so it can be discarded or saved to a different location.
Hey. that's great! Thanks for posting back with the outcome.

Repeated iMac Problems, Display Issues now Kernel Panics
I’m lost on what’s wrong with my 2008 iMac and I think I just have to bring it back into Apple for a third time to have it repaired. But something is obviously not working that is causing these issues.
About a month ago, my computer began showing heavy pixilation, flickering images and the on-screen graphics. The computer appeared to keep working in the background from what I could tell so I came to conclusion that it must be the graphics card that’s failing and I’ll need to have it looked at.
My 2008 iMac was custom-built by Apple with the Nvidia GeForce 8800GS that was offered as an upgrade option. There have been several posts on the display and graphics discussion board about that graphics card along with other postings other places about the problems the Nvidia GeForce 8-series had.
The display problems I mention above would not happen immediately, it would happen as the computer warmed up and was used for 3-5 minutes.
Anyway I brought my computer into Apple explained to them what I believed was the problem and the Apple Store technician agreed with me. Because I did not purchase AppleCare, it cost me $400 and a week without my iMac to have that card replaced.
I got the computer back two weeks ago and everything seemed fine. It was working as it always had. I even was running SMC Fan Control in order to keep the computer as cool as I could (the Nvidia problem was related to overheating).
But this morning, this is what I woke up to:
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7436/photoijr.jpg
The computer now has a semi-permanent pixilation when it starts up (as suppose to the pixilation 3-5 minutes into use). But more worrisome now is I cannot start up the computer without it going into a kernel panic. I tried resetting the PRAM, I tried starting in safe mode. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is booting from an external HD which I will try this evening (to hopefully isolate it if it’s hardware or a software problem).
The Apple Hardware Test has been unhelpful. When it originally failed three weeks ago, the test showed nothing and this morning when I ran it (permanent pixilation and all), it showed nothing. I feel like if it was a software issue the pixilation would have disappeared during the hardware test because that’s not an OS-X based program.
Here are my specs on this computer:
2008 iMac 24" 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo, 4 gigs of RAM (Crucial Purchased, I have original sticks somewhere), 1 TB HD, Nvidia GeForce 8800GS.Hi, just to update you, I came home today and did a few things that didn't seem to solve my Mac's problems:
- I booted up from my firewire "safe" drive that I keep a copy os x on to see if I had a corrupted hard drive or something. It booted into the kernel panic I described above.
- I also swapped out the crucial RAM for Apple's factory RAM. It also booted into the Kernel Panic.
In both incidents, the display issues didn't go away. Now instead of pixelization i have vertical bars running in a pattern across my screen.
I'm currently trying to boot onto the OS X CD at this point to see if I could do a reinstall. It's taking quite awhile to boot into that.
With that in mind, I think we're still having graphics card issues or more seriously some logic board problem. -
Smart Object Display Issue CS5 - Anyone else?
I created a new PS document (CS5 Mac latest version) I have a few layers I grouped and made a smart object for ease of updating and reuse. Problem is my smart object just randomly disappear or even sppear to be "erased" by other layters if i move them around. They are still there and through some random acts I can them to reappear.
I am not even sure if I can explain it right as it is just odd...
Anyone else having dusplay issues with Smrt Objects in CS5?
I am running on a new iMac in 64bit mode.
Thanks!Try turning Open GL off and relaunching the document. This is most likely something to do with your Graphics card not being able to keep up with Photoshops stringent requirements.

Wallstreet battery issue or something else?
I have a Wallstreet Powerbook G3 which as been my only computer until I recently purchased a iBook G4.
This fall I found I have an issue with the G3, when I use the battery the computer freezes up. Sometimes I'm able to work for a bit then it freezes or I bring it up from sleep and it freezes immediately. I have also done a shutdown and started it from battery power, which it starts up completely until I start using a program and then it freezes. I have no problems when I have it connected to the power cord. The battery shows on the desktop and when I'm on battery power it shows how much power has been used. It is the original battery that I received when I purchased the computer new.
This hasn't been a problem for me, but I'm wanting to sell it to a friend and he wants to use it with battery power sometimes.
I've tried reseting the power manager and the PRAM and keep having the same problem.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.storm,
It does sound like you have a USB PC card installed. If this is the case, go to your Energy Saver > Advanced Settings and uncheck (turn off) 'allow processor cycling' for both the Battery and Power Adapter; Power Adapter is probably OFF now. Your 'book will freeze in 8.x/9.x in the presence of a USB PC card if processor cycling is enabled. -

Does this intermittent failure point to power supply or BIOS issues or something else?
My 1.5-year-old computer has experienced the following scenario twice in the past 3 months.
I press power button to start it up, nothing happens: nothing appears on screen, no beeps, no other signs of life (but the light in the power button itself does briefly light).
After trying all the obvious things, I try repeatedly hitting F2 immediately after hitting the power button. This brings up a diagnostic screen. I run all the diagnostics, none reports an error, I proceed to boot Windows and all is normal.
A few weeks later, exactly the same sequence of events.
(I've also run iolo System Mechanic Pro and numerous other utilities, they report and fix registry errors but don't tell me anything useful.)
Thanks.@cschutze

Graphic card issue or something else?
Hello
my mac has started to produce strange patterns over the desktop - its very colorful, blocky and seems to follow the mouse when clicked. The only way to get rid of it is when you eventually find the shut down button and do a restart. It has now happened about 3 times over the past 10 days or so and there is no pattern which suggest certain software is triggering it.
I have done two hardware test, verified the permissions and disk - still the problem came back last night.
Can anybody confirm that it maybe a graphic card and if so is the card built onto the logic board.
The iMac is a early 2006 modeldon't bother replying as i took the imac to a apple store today and it's yet another new logic board - glad i had the 3 years cover

Mac freezed, Blender issues or something else?
Hello,
I have been using Blender on my MacBook Pro since i have it (2011). I never had a problem with that software but since last week my mac screen freezed like on the first and second pictures when i launched a rendering. I could not do anything, so, I had to restart my mac. And when I used another app shortly after this problem, the screen freezed too (third picture, shifted and striped screen).
And sometimes it did that :
http://youtu.be/_1KhF5PlHwc
Does someone know where it could come from?
Thank you,
AlexisYou've probably the problem discussed in this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0 - thread.
First comes the screen glitches, and it goes downhill from there.
Apple will want you to pay for a 'new' logic board, but time and time again these 'new' logic boards fail. The only real solution is to have your GPU BGA reballed back to the logic board.
Take a look at that thread - it's most certainly the problem that you're having.

My 10.6.8 macbook pro's DVD player won't play a movie from Netflix. The DVD does play on a 10.5 mb pro. So DVD is ok. Message says "not permitted" when I click play. Is there a compatibility issue? Or something else?
Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

Frame rate issue and interlacing problems
i am going to close a project created from others and when exported the final at source setting, 422 pro I ve got I guess some interlacing problem, horizontal lines.the project had this problems, clips at 29,97 but project is at 25 i
now considering that final target is a standard DVD and project is in 1080, what is the best way to export and to solve this issue? sending project to Compressor and there using the slowest and the best setting for dvd's?There may not be a problem with your project if delivery is DVD. Computers do not display interlaced at all well. Output to DVD and test with a DVD player>TV. It should be fine.
