Intermittent firewire drives, dvd not working, other tales of woe

hi,i have a macally 160gb hard drive thing on fw 400 that only shows up on something like 1 time out of 20 on my PowerBook running 10.4.6.It quite happily shows up on my iBook running 10.3.0 without fail every time.also i tried a target disk mode from the iBook to PowerBook and the iBook did the firewire symbol on its screen but did not show on the PowerBook. My 3rd gen iPod shows up 4 times out of 10 on my PowerBook via FW so its not as far as I can tell a hardware fault with the FW slot on the PowerBook.I just tried resetting nvram which worked for the first time the PowerBook was restarted but ejecting the hard drive and replugging into the PowerBook it took a further 5 times to show up on the Powerbook again.Other odd behaviour at the moment is the PowerBook refusing to read dvds just giving me the "this disk is unreadable by this computer-ignore or eject"message.I've got a horrible feeling it's software reinstall time but i've only got the original version of 10.4 and a dialup connection so getting back up to 10.4.6 is going to be an impossibility for now.If it's any help the last thing i installed on the PowerBook was 10.4.6.about 4 weeks ago and that I downloaded at work to disk thanks to a broadband connection. As for the iBook it's back after a years holiday thanks to a cracked screen that i was quoted £400 to replace-i eventually found a replacement thanks to ebay uk for £20 and fitted myself today. Its great to have 2 macs again but i do have a light patch running down the centre of the screen where everything appears slightly lighter.
Please help......

Have you tried running FireWire Target Disk Mode the other way? Start up the PowerBook in TDM and hook it up to your PowerBook to see if it recognizes it reliably. If not, I'd say it's got to be some kind of hardware issue, perhaps a loose connector or other fault.

  • Dual Boot SnowLeo-Leopard from FireWire Drive doesn not work!

    Hello,
I start SnowLeo 10.6.1 from my iMac (upgraded from previous running Leopard OSX) and added a Lacie d2 1Tb Firewire 800 external drive where I want to install OSX 10.5.
By beginning of the install the computer just restarts several times without giving the option to complete the install.
No way to use the Option Key while booting!
I created a single partition on the new drive and inizialized it with the Master GUID Tablefile option for Intel Macs booting volume.
I tried then to do the same thing on a minimac running OSX10.5 and it works!
    Thanks for helping

As far as I know, external hard drives do not need drivers - they should just work.
Have you thought of doing this a totally different way:
make sure internal HD is running well and without problems (run Disk Utility or Disk Warrior and repair permissions) and then make a bootable clone on your external using SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner? That is, after you use Disk Utility to partition (and, in the process, erase) the external drive.
After the process is finished, test to make sure it works.
I've used this method and it works for me; if you wish or need to start up from the external, either choose it in System Preferences -> Startup disk or hold down option key while booting.

  • My mac book pro fell of my desk, everything seems fine, but the dvd drive is not working properly, any suggestions

My mac book fell of my desk yesterday. All seems well, but I noticed today that the dvd drive is not working properly, it seems to want to keep ejecting the disk even when the disk is out, and it won't accept dvd's any more. Any suggestions o fellow apple users?

Back up EVERYTHING, then take it in to have them assess for any latent damage. Wouldn't want a similar "delayed reaction" from the hard disk drive, would we?

  • Satellite P25-S520 - DVD drive is not working properly

Fix DVD Drive or buy external drive
My DVD drive is not working properly, in fact it may never have been working proper. Recently I tried to back up my PC to a DVD using Norton 360. Norton did not recognize the DVD was present. I then tried writing a text file to a DVD and was unsuccessful. Both DVD+R and DVD-R media were tried (Maxwell 16X).
I could have probably lived with this however, I got a copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 10 on a CD and my Toshiba would not recognize it. I tried the CD in my neighbors laptop and it was recognized.
An attempt at updating the driver was also unsuccessful.
I was able to rip a music CD last night so that at least is working correctly.
Does anybody know how I can fix this? The important part is being able to load my new program.
Searching some forums I've found that other people have had problems with the Pioneer drive. If the drive cannot be fixed I am not adverse to buying an external DVD drive. Unfortunately where I live there are no brick-and-mortar stores which sell external drives and I would prefer to avoid the hassle of getting a drive online and discovering that it does not work with my Toshiba. Can anyone suggest an external USB drive which will read and write CDs and DVDs and which is certain to be compatible with my Toshiba?
    Thank you for any help,

Any external USB CD/DVD drive will be compatible with your laptop.
However you wont be able to boot of CD's (Run Recovery for example) if you use an external drive.
So your best option would be to replace the internal drive with a Toshiba drive designed for the laptop. Call an ASP and ask for a quotation.

  • My imac dvd drive is not working

my imac dvd drive is not working anytime I put a cd or dvd in and it tries to load for like one mintue and then just ejects

My superdrive has always been sensitive to dirt and smudges. Memorex and other mfgs make a DVD cleaner disk that has little bristles on the DVD to brush the dust away. Vacuuming the slot can also clean out dust buildup. Also there are disk polishers that can repair scratched CDs and DVD if they become unreadable.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
If your hardware supports more recent versions then:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Try starting up Disc Utility from your utilities Folder, Mac fail, and see if you can eject the disk from there.
If not, as your computer is brand new, I'd suggest you simply get in contact with the place you purchased it from to arrange a replacement.

  • External Firewire drive does not mount on desktop now.

    Greetings everyone.
G5 dual, 4.6GB ram, OSX 10.4.10, external firewire drive, formerly worked fine, now is invisible.
Not the drive. New purchase, worked fine until a restart. Not the cable. Power is getting from the G5 to the firewire drive. Not the port. I also have a firewire card instlaled so I have three ports to connect it to (and two on the FW drive). No combination works. Not the computer, the FW drive also fails to appear on an iBook. Not the OS. I did a clean install to make sure.
I'm not a newbie. I know what I'm doing. Until now! DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius and Apple's Disk Utility cannot see the drive.
The FW drive is a Powerbook internal HD inserted into a case, purchased seperately.
At my wits' end. Can anyone help please.

I am suddenly having this EXACT problem. I have two Firelite firewire drives (one 60G and one 80G) that are suddenly refusing to mount on my older dual 1.25GHz G4 tower. They are also suddenly refusing to mount on my non-intel iMac. They will both mount painlessly on my new Intel MacBook Pro, but that's not much use, since the point of the firewire drives is to transfer files between these computers. I'm updating all of them to 10.4.10 to see if that's the issue...
