Intermittent iChat audio input problem

Hello all,
One client has an Intel Mac mini (Macmini3,1) with an external iSight camera running 10.6.7.
We can be having an audio or video conference, or a screen sharing session, and it will work fine for a long time.  After a while though, for reasons that I have yet to explain, his sound input will simply change to where I can only hear him if he is shouting.  When I go to the System Preferences, I can check his sound input volume and it can be turned all the way up, but he still cannot transmit any sound unless he shouts.  The sound input level also jumps normally on his computer, but that sound that is making the input level jump does not get sent through iChat unless it is very loud. This will persist until he reboots the computer, at which point it will be fine again.... for a while.
The only thing I have noticed in the console are:
[0x0-0x23023].com.apple.iChat[229]  resetting echo canceller
iChat[16487] attribute = {
VCSupportARDAudioMux = 1;
shouldFindExternalIP = 1;
0x0-0xcd6cd6].com.apple.iChat[16487]     resetting echo canceller
Any ideas?
Router issue?
When we talk we are usually speaking on MobileMe and we have encryption enabled.....
Thanks

Hi Ralph,
In the System Preferences > Sound > Input does the blue bar seem to be alway "On" to some degree ?
No
Could this be explained by the Camera mic picking up the computer's disk noise ?
I don't think so.  The Mini is pretty quiet and the iSight is on top of the monitor held in place via the magnetic holder
Does it do better on a rubberised mouse mat ?
The iSight cam?
Does the same Preferences get the Ambient Noise Reduction button even though it has no internal Mic ?
No, there is none when iSight is connected and selected
If it does try chaing it between Off and On.
Any MIDI input connected ?
sometimes, but never when we chat.  a keyboard for garageband.
If so check this is at 48000 as the sample setting for the External iSight. (May may to check this anyway).
In the Audio Midi Setup right?  will do that next time it is plugged in.
Will try to recreate that playlist as well.
Thanks as always...

  • SPDIF optical audio input problem

having got over the audio stutter problem by upgrading to 10.4.5, i discover that there is a part 2 to the audio faults on the last g4 powerbooks.
i've been trying to record from DAT via the spdif input, but after a random amount of time, the apps stop recording with a processor overload error, or worse, something very similar to the looping audio problem previously thought cured.
If i try and record via line in analogue - there is no problem.
I'm not really streesing the CPU - i've been forced to try and use simple recorders like quicktime and boom recorder , trying to keep it simple and reliable at this stage.

But when I plug the output of the Radio Shack controller into the audio input of the iMac, it captures only one end (my end) of the conversation.
Where did you previously connect that output, when it works properly?
Is it coming over only on the left or right channel?

  • SM-58/audio input problem

Hi. I don't know if this is the right forum, but it's worth a shot. I am at my wit's end.
I have an SM-58 vocal mic, which I used to use through my macbook with a Blue Icicle interface. I then purchased a Line 6 UX1 guitar interface, with PodFarm software, which I then linked to GarageBand. At first I had no problem recording in GarageBand using my SM-58 routed through the UX1. At some point, however, the computer stopped receiving a signal from the mic.
At this point, I no longer receive any input signal from my mic, whether I'm in GarageBand, PodFarm, or simply in the system preferences>sound input window. And the thing, is I know the mic is fine - it works fine through analog gear. I know all the other equipment is fine, too, since it works with my guitar. So what happened to my mic sound? Why does the computer no longer pick anything up? If anyone can help, I would be extremely grateful... I'm lost.

But when I plug the output of the Radio Shack controller into the audio input of the iMac, it captures only one end (my end) of the conversation.

  • Annoying audio-input problem

I have a really strange and annoying problem. Everytime I boot up, I have to change the mic-volume in Audacity for any audio-input to work.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I've had this since I installed Arch Linux.

    I assume you've read this.
Is there anything that sets volume during startup?  Check rc.local.

  • Sun Ray audio input problem

We have a new application with a softphone integrated and we have problem in some DTU's with noise in input audio (Microphone). We have checked the firmware version in DTU's with problems are the same version as DTU's that don't have problems. Also we have observed that units with problem d'ont even respond to Stop+S for pop-GUI to appear, but we can't confirm that this is a rule in all units. We d'ont know what the really problem is because we thought in problems of networking but, when we replace a unit that d`oesnt work for other that works the problem disapears.
    Thanks in advance,
    Oscar.

Are you certain that these Sun Ray units have downloaded the new firmware that is delivered with the -03 patch? This audio fix is in the firmware, so if the units don't get the new firmware their behaviour won't change.

  • Audio Input Problems with Alesis MultiMix 8 USB Mixer

I have hooked up an Alesis MultiMix 8 USB mixer and condensor Microphone to my new iMac G5's USB port. When going into the Sound Control Panel my input slider for Audio in is grayed out and states that their are no input devices, (I chose the USB input device instead of internal mic.), yet it does pic up the sound from the mixer and mic. Also, I change my preferences in Garageband to use the USB mixer and Mic, but my Track Editor "wave forms at the bottom af Garageband are barely visible, no matter how loud I set the input volume. I used to have very large wave forms in the track editor when using my Logitech USB mic. The sound is fine when played back but it is a real pain when trying to edit in Garageband when I can barely see the wave forms in the track editor. I have tried this set up on my Powerbook also, with the same results. Can someone please help me with the settings using this mixer so I have GOOD usable wave forms in Garageband. Thanks -Swomper

  • Audio Inputs no longer work after upgrade to 10.4.10

Anyone else having trouble with audio inputs after upgrading to 10.4.10? Here's my deal:
MacPro dual 2.66, 4GB RAM, running 10.4.10 as of this morning.
Upgraded to 10.4.10 today and the mic on my Plantronics USB headset quit working. 'Phones still work. Here's what I did:
    1. Tried multiple audio input devices. None work.
    2. Tried all USB ports, problem persists.
    3. Tried the 1/8" audio input, problem persists.
    4. Zapped PRAM, problem persists.
    5. Called AppleCare and they had me do an Archive and Install on the system software, which installed 10.4.7 and the problem went away. Then, at their suggestion, I let Software Update reinstall 10.4.10 and the problem came back.
    6. Rebooted the system from a 2nd internal drive running 10.4.9 and the problem went away.
Seems pretty clear to me that this issue is with the OS, yet Apple's support staff insists the problem is "with the data on my boot drive". Thing is, the data on the "problem" boot drive consists of exactly the same applications on the other drives, and only those applications. There ** is no ** data on the boot drive other than the OS and some applications. Yet the other drive I can boot from that runs 10.4.9 and doesn't cause audio input issues contains all sorts of junk.
So, to reiterate, I'm booting from a clean boot drive with nothing but OS 10.4.10 and some pro applications on it and the audio input won't work. I boot from into any other Mac OS on this drive or any other and all is well. Yet this problem is supposedly with my data?
Is anyone else out there seeing issues like this?

I used a UVC-compliant USB Logitech camera (the
    Fusion) driverless
    under OS X 10.4.9.
FWIW, none of these devices are actually driverless. They rely on drivers either supplied separately by some company (not necessarily the vendor of the product) or bundled into the OS. Usually, the bundled drivers are based on open standards like UVC mentioned in the link. Apple writes a lot of the bundled driver code itself but some of it comes from outside sources like LSI or Intel.
An unfortunate fact of life is that open standards are not always as well defined as they ideally should be. Another is that certain companies sometimes set their own standards that aren't quite compatible with open ones, sometimes to implement real or imagined improvements on an open standard, sometimes to gain a marketing advantage.
The good news is that the market usually -- eventually -- favors the open standard. The bad news is that it often takes some time for this to happen, leaving users -- particularly Mac users, who still represent a smaller market force than those using Windows -- without a solution for an uncomfortably long period of time.
Your best or only recourse for now may be to downgrade to 10.4.9 until this gets resolved, but you should also take into account that not all users are having these problems so it may be something other than the update itself that is causing the problem. I just video chatted with a colleague using an Intel Mac mini who is having no problems whatsoever -- we are both puzzled why he is unaffected while others are.
Sorry this couldn't be of more help.

  • Seriously, this is getting old!!! No audio input in iChat

I'm starting a new thread about this unsolved issue.
I can't in any way get audio input in iChat working since switching to Tiger. I'm not alone with this problem. I have FIVE friends with the exact same issue.
    Line In - NO
    Microphone In - NO
    Digital In - NO
3rd party Sound Card - NO!
In system preferences the input meter displays loud enough incoming signal but iChat shows nothing at all. QuickTime Recording works like a charm.
I have 3 computers myself, none of them work with audio input in iChat, output works fine but it's not enough...
Re-installing the system doesn't do it either.
I have an iSight but I've misplaced it so I can't test if that works but I seriously doubt it.
3rd party sound cards tested (all with latest drivers):
    MOTU 828MkII
    RME Fireface 800
    Digidesign Mbox (1)
    Digidesign digi002
    Any ideas?

Ralph...I am new to this discussion. I am also having difficulty hearing my buddy. He is using a Windows PC. He can hear and see me. I can see him. We are using AIM. (I have a G5 with latest Tiger and using the Isight camera and IChat).
I checked against your response below but need some clarification.
In System Preferences > Sound > Input tab you have a
Microphone selected and the volume adjusteed so that
the blue bars reach at least halfway ?
    YES
In iChat the Video (Audio) menu says Microphone
Enabled with a tick next to it ?
    Yes
In the Preferences > Video section the same Mic as
selected in the System Preferences is selected in the
    Microphone drop down ?
This is where I'm confused. In IChat Preferences the microphone selected is ISight Built In...in System Preferences Output is Internal Speakers with Built in Audio Port...in Input it is ISight with Firewire port.
In IChat preferences I don't seem to have an output button.
In the View menu Show Audio Status is enabled
    (ticked) ?
I'm not connected right now to my buddy so I can't check this part.
Ok for extra clarity. The blue bars in System
Preferences > Sound and the green Bar in the Video
section Preview screen (even without a camera) are
the visual indicators of the sound from your Mic into
    iChat.
In Connection Doctor (from the Audio/Video menu) the
green bars, with percentages showing, is the Audio
    (and Video) from your Buddy.
Since I'm not connected now, I can't tell...
With what I've told you about my settings, do you see any particular problems? This seems crazy that it doesn't work...

  • Ichat audio and video problems, error 8

I've been reading the other ichat posts, and it seems that I have kind of the same problem. I can't get audio or video to work with iChat. I can send or receive invitations, but then it gives me an "error -8" message and the attempt fails.
I have a new computer, so this is the first time I've tried to do iChat audio/video chats. I connect via DSL with a Siemens speedstream modem connected to an Airport.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Ichat audio and video problem

my ichat audio and video don't work with any of my friends, no problems with a text chat, i'm using tiger and they all have leopard, all macs are up to date, i've tried messing around with the ports, firewall is off, internet sharing is off, i know a lot of people are having this problem, are there any answers to this that actually work, i'd appreciate any help

    Hi Ben
Welcome to the  Discussion Pages
Presumably you mean this Linksys is set to Not Block Pings on the WAN port (Or whatever phrase your device has) ?
I also presume that you have done the Quicktime Setting that Steve mentions above ?
I presume the Linksys is the modem as well and it is doing UPnP ?
At this stage I have two suggestions.
    1)
Shut down the computer and remove the Ethernet cable (modem or computer end does not matter) (Make sure it will not connect Wirelessly when restarted before hand)
    Restart the computer
    Restart iChat.
    Reconnect the Internet
    Log iChat in.
    2) Try a reinstall of the COMBO version of the 10.5.2 update
Both of these suggestions have been used in previous iChat's when other things have not worked and the set up appears OK on the surface.
    Also try
    3) Rebooting the router and a Modem if separate.
    4) In System Preferences > Network > Connection method > Advanced Button > DNS tab add the DNS servers of your ISP
DO them one at a time so you know which one works.

  • Audio input and internal problems

    Hey
Before you tell me to check my sound system preferences and change that i already have and yes its all they way over to the right and its been over to the left and everywhere but my mic is terible, i can shout away and it about picks me up, only when i tap the wee hole where it lives does it pick up well.
I aint sure whats wrong there? Any ideas?
Also i aint sure if my Audio input is working as i bought myself a small mic and it dosent work it says the sound card needs to have a stereo condenser microphone output...whatever that means...
Any help would be much apreciated
    Guy Phenix

    Hi,
A stereo condenser mic output is one that powers the microphone you are using. It sends some electricity up the wire to the microphone to power a small amplifier inside of the microphone. Your microphone will not work without this small amout of electricity (called phantom power).

  • Sound input problem

I have a weird problem: in using a headset to make calls using Skype or iChat I cannot get the headset microphone to work, though the earphones work fine. Everything is plugged in correctly. Have selected the Line-In option in the Sound panel of System Preferences, but the Input Level indicator shows no sign of life. Have selected the same option in Skype. Have also tried a 2nd headset, with the same result. For reference the built-in microphone works fine.
We have 2 iMacs here displaying the same symptoms; what's happening? The headset worked just fine prior to upgrading to OS 10.6.6; is there a link here?

Having banged head against wall for too long I finally took my computer to Apple, where it was determined that there’s nothing wrong with the microphone port; however, the Radioshack headset does NOT work with the sound input device set to Line-in; input device MUST be set to internal microphone, after which the headset microphone AND the internal microphone will BOTH pick up sound simultaneously. Go figure.
May have something to do with the audio-in port requiring an externally powered microphone as per users manual. From MacWorld: If you have experience with multimedia headsets and the Mac, you know that Apple equips Macs with a line-level audio-input jack—one that doesn’t work with microphone-level audio sources without amplification.

  • Horrible Line Noise w/ Built in Audio Input After Update!

Something happened after the most recent LE8 update, I now have terrible line level hiss/noises when using the built-in input on my MacBook Pro. No trouble with my Firewire audio input though. The noise is really bad and records to track, making me believe that this is an input issue. I'm not positive that it's from the update but I've never had this problem before. It happens with both Logic Express and Garageband, rendering the audio input useless. Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks for the response guys. It seems we're in the same boat.
The problem is intermittent on my machine . It has occurred three times since I bought it. The fist time it lasted for a day and a half. I rang Apple support and went through a number of steps until the P-RAM suggestion which seemed to fix it. A few days later it disappeared again and resetting the P-RAM had no effect. My wife continued to use the computer (without sound) and some hours later it came back after a restart (she only restarted it because she is in the habit of shutting down instead of using sleep). The problem occurred again. That time I restarted the machine a number of times, with and without the external speakers plugged in, with them turned on and off etc. This had no effect. I gave up. Some time later my wife went to use the computer and it came back. I now believe that the P-RAM solution that seemed to fix the problem the first time was just a coincidence.
I rang Apple support again and they gave me the following steps (A,B & C of which I went through the first time the problem occurred):
A: Log in through another account and see if it had the same problem.
    - The built-in audio was still missing.
B: Run the disk utility on the hard drive (after booting from installation DVD).
    - There were nil problems on the HD, but it did not fix the problem.
    C: Reset the P-RAM.
    - This worked the first time though it has not worked on subsequent re-occurrences of the problem.
    D: Do an Archive Reinstall.
    - I did this today; though the built-in audio was working, I just wanted to complete the suggestions the Apple support person gave me. The problem has not reoccurred yet, but it has only been a few hours. I will be using the computer as much as possible tonight to see if the problem reoccurs.
If the problem reoccurs I'll be taking the machine in for warranty repairs, or better still replacement.
