Intermittent jagged display

A few days after buying the iPad 2, it was dropped.  Corner was dented but everything worked fine.
A year later, it was dropped again, this time from only 40~50 cm, and it had decent protection.  However, the screen displayed a scattered, jagged image rather than the regular homescreen.  A couple of days later, a wipe, restart and reset fixed the problem.
Two weeks later, the jagged screen reappeared for no apparent reason.  Again, a couple of days, a wipe, restart and reset fixed it.
Today, it's happened again, for no apparent reason.
Here's what it looks like:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e46/Jaboney/iPadscreen.jpg
Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and whether it could be repaired?  It's not covered by warranty due to the damage taken by the first fall.
Many thanks

No ideas?  This has happened three more times over the past week.
Each time, it seems, wiping the device is a necessary step.  But since I don't know what's actually going on, that may be pure voodoo.
This is a 64 gb iPad, which I'm used to running at capacity, but I've been forced to cut back to the bare bones essentials because restoring and reinstalling all those apps takes so long.
If no one has any idea as to the problem, can someone tell me if wiping is typically a necessary step?
Please, and pretty please.
Also, any recommendations for repair outfits?

  • Icon and menu "Ghosting" & intermittent startup display problems

    Hi all
My Ti is almost 7 years old. 90% of the time it sits on my desk - very rarely moved. Plenty of ventilation and in an air conditioned room.
I have a LG L1780Q digital 17 inch monitor which has been attached for the last two years. My desktop is spread across both screens.
Within the last three months a problem with the display began to present itself - initially it was very intermittent but now the problem is appearing daily.
everything on the desktop like icons and menu bars and dock icons become pasted with a Ghosting approximately twice the width of the icon. The mouse cursor also has a vertical pair of horizontal bars which move around with the cursor.
This problem never effects application windows at all. The bars attached to the cursor remain when hovered over the app - However the application content is not affected at all. So the problem exists only with "desktop" items.
The problem also manifests on both screens. About 50% of the time I can grab an application window with the mouse and drag it all over the desktops and this "wipes clean" the problem - a bit like an eraser. However, in the last couple of days even this doesn't help. 50% of the time a reboot may solve the problem but that too now is getting worse and worse. Also, occasionally on a reboot, instead of the user login window all i get is a series of broken whitish lines against the standard blue background - this is again across both screens. This is obviously the login screen but all scrambled.
Reading the posts here I'm beginning to fear that the dreaded "replace the logic board" phrase may come up
Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks.
I love my TiBook - please don't tell me it's dying

    Hi
    Many thanks for your advice.
First, of course you are correct - I bought the Ti in Jan 2003. It just seems like it's been with me forever!
In response to your suggestions this is what happened:-
Disconnected external monitor - problem still there.
Booted from original install DVD - problem still there.
I ran disk repair anyway - it found some errors with the catalog file entries, said it fixed them - problem still there as suspected.
Now the wierd thing - after Disk repair i rebooted from HD without the external monitor connected. After sitting watching the spinning grey wheelie thing on the grey start screen for an hour I decided to leave it and go to bed. I don't know what time it actually booted but an hour seems an inordinately long time?
After reboot - problem still there (pretty bad now).
When i reconnected my external monitor, it auto detected the digital feed, screen came on for a second and then went black. Powering the monitor off and on again produced exactly the same result. If I look closely i can just make out very faintly the desktop content on the blacked out external monitor - as though the backlight has failed! Powering off and on does the same thing every time - 1 second of full brightness and content then black!
    BOOHOO!!! is my Ti dying?
Unfortunately I don't have the Apple Hardware Test CD.
Should I sit down in anticipation of the verdict?
    many thanks

  • Reader XI (11.0.07) crashes IE 10/11 intermittently when displaying PDFs

We recently upgraded all of our workstations firmwide from Reader X to Reader XI (11.0.07 as noted in title).  WIN7 64-bit.
We are now seeing problems with some (but not all) users when they display PDFs in IE (Adobe Reader PDF plugin enabled in IE); the browser crashes - not necessarily when the first PDF is clicked on.  I can trigger the error by going to a site such as irs.gov, clicking on a link to open a PDF, hitting the back button my browser and then opening another PDF.  After a few cycles of this the browser will crash.  This was definitely not a problem for us with Reader X.
Here's a screenshot of the error.
Some things that I've tried which have not fixed this on a representative workstation:
Set Reader XI to Protected Mode.
Launch IE in "No add-ons" mode.
Disable 3rd party extensions in IE.
Uninstall and reinstall Reader from our SCCM utility.
Repair Reader from control panel or Reader | Help.
    Restart workstation.
Flush temp files from machine (Windows temp files, IE cache, etc).
Reset IE advanced settings and restore defaults.
Disable & re-enable the Adobe Reader PDF plugin in IE.
As noted, not all users have this problem.  Based on a small sample it could be as high as 50% of people.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Try disabling Protected Mode in Adobe Reader [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Intermittent Dual Display Issue - Random "Detect Displays"?

Have an MBP w/ Samsung SyncMaster T220, attached via DVI. In recent week, or so, the two monitors will 'fade to blue' (like it will if you attach another display while the MBP is already up an running) then return back to 'normal' as if nothing has happened. When this happens it may stay on the 'blue background' for a split second, or for up to five seconds.
It is as if it 'looses' the dual display then gains it back. And the 'blue screen' seems the equivalent of "Detect Displays" being randomly instantiated.
[NOTE: the 'blue screen' is not the screen of death nor does the MBP lock up. In fact, as I've typed in this posting, it has happened approx. six times, I can keep typing and when the screen returns the stuff I typed in while the screen is blue is all there.)
I've checked the cables, the connectors, the power sources, etc.
    Thoughts?

This has been happening to me regularly since buying one of the new mid-2009 MacBook Pros. It had never happened with my previous early-2008 MacBook Pro.
Additionally, the detect displays functionality is not triggered as it should be by dis/connecting the display. I have to manually “detect displays“ every time. Very frustrating, and pretty weird.

  • Intermittent problems displaying autocomplete popups for autotext entries

When autotext entries are saved into a template in the startup directory. the autocomplete names for the autotext entries popup and allow the user to press Enter to expand them into the document SOME OF THE TIME.  If I save the autotext entries into
a building blocks template in the user's appdata BB directory, the popups NEVER display.  I also know that turning the HORIZONTAL SCROLL BAR ON affects the display of the autotext popups.
Does anyone know how to make them appear every time?  Saving them in NORMAL.DOT is not an option.
    Thank you.

You should NOT be getting "autocomplete/tooltips" for AutoText stored anywhere other than the normal template (or the attached template) in Word 2010. You got them for AT stored anywhere in Word 2003. You got them for no AutoText in Word 2007.
The ability to have them for any available AT was restored in Word 2013/365.
    Automated Boilerplate Using Microsoft Word
The naming of entries is crucial. The default (and poor) name assigned to AT entries is the beginning text in the entry. This is seldom unique. If the first four characters are not unique it can lead to problems. Also, it is possible to have different AutoText
have the same name and stored in different templates. As with macros havng the same names stored in different templates, Word has a hierarchy.
The F3 key has brought in AutoText entries as long as I can remember, I believe before Word 95. Again, it is looking for a unique 4-character name.
"...saved as AUto Text | General  | Normal" to me indicates it is being saved in the normal template.
That is the diefault location for saving AT, and seldom what you want.
I now see that this is an older thread and you are not the original poster. You should read Stefan Blom's responses to the OP. There is no known bug in Word 2010 with AT other than the constraint of storage locations.

  • No signal to dual monitors on start up

HP ENVY Phoenix 810-170st CTO Desktop PC, windows 8.1
Two computer monitors, same models, one connected by dvi and one by hdmi. Upon start up they will randomly fail to display anything and will say "no signal, entering power saving mode". Sometimes unplugging one while the computer is still on will allow the other to start displaying and I can log in then plug the other in. Sometimes though I need to manually power off the computer, unplug one, power back up, log in and then plug the other in. Both displays work, both cables are fine, it just seems that occasionally when I power up with both displays plugged in neither will recognize it is getting a signal. Furthermore, once actually logged in I can reconnect the second display without a problem. Any ideas?

    Hello naros89,
I have read your post on how you are intermittently experiencing display issues from your dual monitor setup, and I would be happy to guide you towards a resolution! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Is this an on-going, or recent issue?
What is the Product and Model Number of your two monitors?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on Using Two or More Monitors with One Computer (Windows 8). This should help stablize your dual-display setup by alloting one of your monitors as a primary display, and the other as a secondary.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • My screen suddenly goes black

My beloved MacBook is getting on in age.  I'm finding that my screen blacks out unexpectedly.  Moving the screen around restores the image, but it's happening more and more frequently, and getting a little harder to get my screen back.  I'm thinking this is an issue of the wiring getting old and creaky, but I don't know if that's right.  Is it serious?  Is it sign my laptop is going into decline?  How do I fix this (or get it fixed)?

    Thanks
Its a 15" MBP i7, with the standard memory etc.
See that Apple have recognised the problem and are looking into it.....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4086
Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.
Ant other thoughts would be useful.

  • I'm Getting Lost in this Upgrade

I did an SL upgrade yesterday and got a bit lost. I had 2 goals in mind: (1) Upgrade to SL and (2) remove the bootcamp partition, create a larger one and reinstall windows.
I deleted the Windows partition previously created by Bootcamp and backed up my OS X files using Time Machine. I then did the SL upgrade. The upgrade went fine, but I was unable to create a new Windows partition using bootcamp, receiving the following message:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I did some reading here on this topic, created an image of my disk using Carbon Copy Cloner and then inserted the original MacBook Pro setup disk that came with my computer and tried to find the correct area in utilities to accomplish the above directed task. After several tries and failure to find the correct utility, I can no longer boot off the MacBook Pro setup disk. The boot screen appears after holding down the option key and when I select the startup disk, after a short time the screen becomes distorted and shows a blue/black/white jagged display.
My computer is running SL properly, but I'm unable to do the format and SL reinstall to try and set up a bootcamp partition for Windows. As a secondary issue, if I reformat the disk successfully, can I just do a fresh SL instal or do I have to instal OSX and then do the upgrade again to SL?
Can anyone help? My appointment at the Genius Bar is a day away.
    thanks,
    kayjh

The error means you are trying to create a Windows partition that is too large with respect to the amount of contiguous space available on the drive. Try creating a smaller Windows partition.
This generally occurs because there isn't sufficient contiguous space which may be due to disk fragmentation as well as trying to create too large of a partition. If there is enough space available but you cannot create a larger Windows partition, then try defragmenting the drive. The easiest and simplest way to do this is to create a bootable clone on an external hard drive. This can be done as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external drive.
    Source means the startup drive.
Boot from the clone by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button. After startup is completed open Disk Utility and erase your main drive, then restore your clone. This will produce a defragmented system drive. You can now restart the computer which will boot from your internal hard drive. You should now be able to create your Windows partition.

  • Dell XPS 15 Color Management Problem with "True Color"

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 15 (6845slv).  Overall I have very happy with it...but have been getting frustrated with color management issues and was hoping to get some advice.
Intermittently, the display had been changing the color scheme (to a suboptimal scheme).  It lasted for anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes and then returned to the original (and more normal appearing) color settings.  It did not seem to happen while running any particular applications.  All drivers are up-to-date.
I turned off the dell application "True Color" which I thought may have been making automatic adjustments to the color scheme and since turning it off the issue hasn't happened again.  However now I'm concerned that by inactivating that software, that I may not be maximizing the potential of the high quality HD display.  And now--though maybe it's in my head--the colors seem to be a little flatter since turning off True Color.
Does anyone have any suggestions for getting the most out of the display? Has anyone had similar issues with True Color?  Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your help.

I ended up fully uninstalling it from programs and features...I haven't had the problem since.  I've been happy with the display since making this change.

  • Mail not working after restore

At the suggestion of a Mac Genius, I restored my iPhone after experiencing intermittent LCD display issues. After the restore, the phone would not send email, stating that one or more of the recipients email addresses was not valid. After I while, I realized that it is also not receiving email over 3G, although it did over wifi. Now after wiping out the accounts and resyncing the phone with my MBP, I'm still getting nothing, not even wifi, nor can I send anything. Not sure what's going on here. Everything (settings, etc.) looks exactly like it was prior to the restore... (...which btw was a bit of a mess in itself. My App Icons were all over the place, emails that had been previously read were now unread...) Any help? Thanks.

After a couple of trips to the Apple Store, and some calls to my ISP just to make sure I was doing everything right, I believe that the problem lies in the 10.5.5 changes to Mail.
I could not set up a new Mail account through my ISP on either my iPhone, my MBP, or the Apple Store's computers. Yet, I was able to easily do so using Mozilla's Thunderbird.
I hope that the 10.5.6 update fixes this.

  • Lost USB partition.

A partition on a Mac with a G5 processor running 10.5 intermittently stopped displaying on of 2 partitions on a USB drive with MAC OS extended (Journaled) formatting.
Disk Tools says it is OK.
Tried diskutil and it says it cannot mount it.
When the computer launches it says it cannot mount that partition.
Only thing I have noticed is that there is no mount point identified for that drive.
Have told to mount through terminal and it says it was successful but does not mount.
How do I get the drive to mount?
