Intermittent printer malfunction

I am unable copy, fax, scan or print from my computer or directly from the officejet 4500.  My IMac recently upgraded to 10.9.4 and I have been having issues ever since.  I have uninstalled, sent hp folder and any other items "hp" to the trash, emptied trash, reset printer, added printer, ran software updates and changed the USB cable.  I have repeated these processes in one form or another at least six times because that is how many software updates I show for the printer.  If I print from eitherthe computer or the printer itself, it is hit-or-miss; sometimes it prints other times all it does feed a blank sheet through and then it  feeds another sheet half way through and displays printing.  On my attempt to fax, it dialed and fed two sheet thru then displayed that the fax was cancelled.  Upon copying, from the glass, it will copy a page with the top of the page cut off then upon another attempt it will repeat the same blank sheet then half fed sheet as it does upon printing attempts. Surprisingly, the scan option seems to be the only thing working correctly as it is the one option that has always given me the most problems.  PLEASE HELP THIS IS DAY THREE OF ISSUES.....

Hello far2neet,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're receiving problems printing, copying  and faxing using the Officejet 4500. I will do my best to assist you! I realize you have performed some necessary steps to try and resolve this issue! I would recommend following this thread on Mac OS won't connect to wireless. This will allow you to clean up the HP software.
I would recommend making sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I just want to see if this makes a difference. I would try resetting this printer for more than 60 seconds. Leave the printer turned on> Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
The fact that when you print or copy a document, you receive a blank page sometimes, then I would recommend following this entire HP document on Printing blank pages. Let me know on this post how this test page prints out.
When you fax a document, does this issue happen every time or only one particular fax number? Could you describe what type of added features do you have on this fax line? I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great night!
I worked on behalf of HP.

Things go really well...only issues is updating Adobe reader past 10.1.8 causes .pdf documents from our intranet to print intermittently one line per page what looks like wing dings, for 50 pages.  Only sometimes.
Forcing to open in Application (rather than browser) seems to solve, but this causes our loans software not to populate documents.  Support with the loans software say they can't replicate in their environment, are not interested in helping.  We must go back to opening in web browser...wing ding print continues.

You bet...10.1.8 and any version newer seems to cause the issue. Any of the Adobe 11 series.  We were at 10.1.3 I believe and it all worked like a charm.
Oh yes...IE 9 in production but have been testing IE10.  Loans software does not populate forms when set to open in application in IE9 and IE10 :-(

  • Intermittent Print/Scan Problems with Canon MF8380Cdw on Wireless Network

For nearly a year now, I've experienced problems printing and scanning using the Canon MF8380Cdw on our network.  The most troubling are the intermitent problems getting the printer to respond during a print job after the device has been found on the network.  Less troubling but still annoying are the problems scanning: it's very difficult to initiate a scan job.  It usually requires trying to initiate the job from the printer AND from the computer in quick succession.  I have reinstalled drivers many times.  Why isn't printing and scanning effortless?

Canon MF8300C Series driver, version 10.0.0

Base station, laptop, and printer are all in the same corner of the same room--signal strength is not an issue. Have had problems, previously, when printer was connected to switch via ethernet.  So...  Nice thought, but I don't believe that's it.
Other things that didn't work: restarting printer, restarting computer.
Is it possible that OS updates mess with the driver, requiring reinstallation?  Our PC users do not seem to have these issues.
I am also using a non-UFR II driver this time, but per a suggestion from a forum, I tried UFR II previously.  I have read many forum exchanges involving Canon/Mac problems and have tried several solutions proposed by PAHU.
Reinstalled printer driver again today, and I can print again (for now), but it's an intermittent problem, likely to return.
    Thoughts?

  • Adobe Reader 9.3.4 intermittently prints or prints blank pages

We are encountering a problem with workstations in our environment where users can occasionally print PDF files successfully but often (more than 50% of the time) nothing prints or 10-20 blank pages print.  On the workstation, no error messages appear on screen at any time and no errors related to this issue appear in the Event Log.  In the System Tray, the print icon appears and disappears normally.  If I watch the print queue, the job passes and appears like it printed successfully and the queue clears.  We've also run into a few instances where only a half page prints or half of a page prints (when printing as image) but is shrunken and centered on page.
The users have multiple configurations regarding printers.  All have at least one Xerox printer installed and various combinations or HP, Brother and Canon printers for use while off network.  The users experience this issue when printing from their workstations to any of these printers.  We have tried PS, PCL6 and Universal print drivers for each of the printer to no effect.  We have uninstalled Adobe Reader and reinstalled multiple times.  We tested using a base 9.0.0, 9.3.3 and after update to 9.3.4 and the same problem existed.  We did clear out the folders and any stray registry entries between uninstall/reinstall.  We also cleared off all print drivers and reinstalled only one driver just to test and still experienced the problem.
We have tried the "print as image" suggestion and received the same results.  We've tried setting the printing preference (Print/Advanced) to Send For Each Page to no effect.  We've disabled all advanced features in the print drivers -- same issue.
All of our workstations are on Windows XP SP3.  On the machines we're actively troubleshooting this problem on, we have confirmed Windows Updates have been applied through the August 2010 patches.  Our environment is fairly vanilla -- WinXP SP3, Office 2003, HP workstations.  Problem occurs when printing PDFs from email attachments, from web pages or when saved locally.  The problem also occurs on workstations at unrelated business units so it isn't a case where one batch of bad images/installs rolled out.  We use direct (IP) printing and not network print servers/queues.
If anyone can provide any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Printing Malfunction

I have iMac G3. I am connected to an HP DeskJet 648C via USB port. This has been a working relationship for about 6 years. I moved the computer and printer to another room. Now I am having trouble printing. I go through the whole process with the CD software and then when I go to Chooser to select my printer I can select the printer but it won't drop into the Setup window. The printer prints it's WOW! page so that I can see how beautiful it is but I can't print my documents from the iMac. The icon appears in the dock but disappears almost as fast as it appears and nothing happens. I have downloaded drivers from the Apple site and I have been in dialogue with HP about the printer. I have done everything HP told me to do. I still have the problem. The printing from the CD suggests to me that the problem lies within my iMac. Can you help me?

    Hi @Jaydubs72
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. If I’m making the correct deduction, you are getting a “No AirPrint Printers Found” message when trying to print from your iPad to your Photosmart 7510 printer.
In the document titled Printing Over a Wireless Network with Apple's AirPrint FAQs one of the FAQs is “What if a 'No AirPrint Printers Found' message displays on my Apple device?”. It has the troubleshooting steps to resolve the message you are getting.
Please let me know the outcome.

  • HP deskjet 960c printer stair-step printing problem

Hi there, my printer used to work beautifully. Now when it prints it I get a stair-step effect. ie it starts OK, then the image moves up by a millimeter, then another millimeter etc etc. It's very annoying. It does it no matter what I print, text, images, pdfs...
Can anyone throw any light on this, and what I might do to correct it? I'm on a G4 quicksilver using os x 10.3.9. Printer driver is up to date as far as I know.
    TA!

    Kathykate,
    We're still reading--
Ooooh these printers, I could scream!
I can be very frustrating at times. Especially when you have intermittent problems.
First, I switched the usb cables around, and that
    didn't make a difference.
It was a thought. We can pretty much rule out a bad USB cable now.
    Then I installed the
gutenprint drivers. They printed out my images in a
not very clear kind of pointalist dots type way, my
type was no longer clear, and the colours were not as
good as before and anyway, it still stair-stepped so
    I uninstalled them.
Interesting that the printing is "pointalist". My old HP 870 also uses the PCL 3 driver from Gutenprint. Text is great. I really don't use that printer for images, however. I have noticed a blue shift in the tones. The fact that the printer is still stair-stepping with these drivers would point to the printer malfunctioning. Especially as I look back over the previous posts and noticed that the stair-stepping seems to have increased in displacement.
But I noticed something in the
gutenprint set up where it talked about respooling
your printer? Basically you had to go into file
sharing and click printers to file share and this
    reset something.
I don't recall seeing that. Do you recall what part of the documentation that was in?
Did 4 prints and no stair-stepping!
Thought I'd cracked it! Of course the next one
stair-stepped... Have also tried the usb cable
directly into the back of the computer (it's normally
    plugged into a belkin hub).
So that one is completely unsolved, still random
    stair-stepping.
All indications seem to point to this being a hardware issue with the printer. The only other test I can think of is to try it on another computer. A Windows box would be a good choice. I know the option of trying things on a different computer is not always possible. I just hate to condemn a printer to the trash heap until all possible avenues have been explored.
My big 1125c is also still a 'mare. When it prints,
it's great, no stair-stepping. But my mac keeps
    losing the connection to it.
Again, the frustration of a sometimes problem. I don't have any good advice here. We have seen this type of problem before and there doesn't seem to be any one thing that helps in all cases. I have three printers. My Epson SC 800 which is connected via a parallel to USB adapter has this problem. I have not found a solution for it. My other 2 printers never skip a beat.
Haven't yet run Apple Hardward Test disk (think I
have it somewhere) although tried the Printer Setup
Repair mentioned and that hasn't seemed to help.
I would still recommend that you give this a go. There still could be a problematic USB port on your computer that is causing some of the problem.
PS Have today posted another question about something

  • My MacBook will no longer connect to my wireless printer.

My MacBook (circa 2010 - it's not a MacBook Pro) stopped connecting wirelessly to my HP printer (3050 J610). I get a message, "Printer is offline." The printer is on and I have no trouble printing from my iMac. I appreciate any advice/insights. Thank you.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're all users here.
There is a 'Reset Printing System' command:
, System Preferences, Hardware, Print & Fax, right-click (Command-click) on the printer in question in the left column, as illustrated below, and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING NOTE: This WILL delete all printers AND print cues AND saved settings, if you have saved your own 'custom settings' for the printer, and named them, such as 'Staples Glossy Photo-rear feed', those WILL disappear.
Then you then will need to reinstall all printers, and re-create any custom settings, so if you have a lot of custom settings saved, make screen captures (+shift+3) for the things you customized BEFORE you reset.
Yes, this is drastic, but if nothing else works, AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT CAUSED BY A PRINTER MALFUNCTION, this has always worked for me to cure my wireless print problems such as you describe.

  • Officejet 6500A won't print

My officejet 6500A plus won't print often.  It says it can't communicate with my Asus pc.   I unplug it for a day or two and it starts printing!  Just turning it off doesn't help.  I need to unplug it.  Meanwhile I can't print for days!  Any suggestions?

    Hey @collage,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the communication issues you're receiving on your Windows 8.1 computer when trying to print to your HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One Printer. Can I please have you run through the steps below.
    Step 1: Run Microsoft Hotfix:
Microsoft recently released a Hotfix to resolve printing issues on the Windows 8.1 Operating System. I'm going to have you start by running the Microsoft Fix to see if this quickly resolves your intermittent print issues.
    Microsoft Support: Hotfix
Once the website opens, select the Hotfix Download Available box. Run through the onscreen instructions to complete the Hotfix update.
Once the Hotfix is complete, please test printing again. Should the issue persist, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Add Alternate Driver:
Even though there is a Full Feature Software and Driver download available for your printer on Windows 8.1, there is a chance that your Windows 8.1 Operating System is not agreeing with the driver for your printer. To confirm if this is the case please follow the steps below.
Open your Start screen (either by selecting the windows start button in the bottom left hand corner or by selecting the 'Windows' button on the bottom left of your keyboard to the left of 'Ctrl'
In the Start Screen type 'Devices and Printers'
If the Devices and Printers option doesn't automatically populate, than click on Settings on the top right and then click on Devices and Printers.
In the Devices and Printers folder right click on your HP Officejet 6500A Plus and left click on Printer Properties
Left click on the Advanced tab
    Left click on New Driver
When the New Driver window opens just hit 'next' until you see a list of Manufacturers on the left and a list of Printers on the right.
Select HP as the Manufacturer on the left
Select Deskjet 9800 as the printer on the right. If Deskjet 9800 doesn't appear than select 'Windows Update' on the bottom left and once the update completes you will be able to select Deskjet 9800.
After selecting Deskjet 9800 hit next to complete the New Driver Wizard
Under the Printer Properties window select 'Apply' but don't hit OK
    Select the General tab
Rename your printer back to HP Officejet 6500A Plus
    Hit OK
Lastly, right click on your HP Officejet 6500A Plus one more time and left click on Printing Preferences
Left click on the Paper/Quality tab
Left click on the 'Normal' dropdown for Print Quality on the bottom right and change this to Fast Normal
    Hit Apply and OK
    Try to print!
Please let me know if either the Hotfix from Microsoft of the alternate print driver resolves your printing issues. Best of luck!

  • Printer Works then Does Not?

    Hello,
I was curious if anybody else has had a problem where a TimeCapsule shared printer works initially when the TimeCapsule is turned on or rebooted but after some time becomes unrecognized.
My printer is a Samsung ML-2510 monochrome laser printer which is connected to the TimeCapsule via a USB cable. When I start up the TimeCapsule he printer works fine and I can print but after about a day I loose access to the printer. The AirPort utility reports 'No Printers' when the printer is connected and powered.
I have tried the following steps to try to find the problem, without powering down either the TimeCapsule or printer:
    1. Disconnect the printer from the USB port and attach it directly to my MacBook, The printer is detected and prints.
    2. Attach USB hard disk to the TimeCapsule, The disk is recognized and I have access to the USB hard disk.
    3. Disconnect the hard disk drive and reconnect the confirmed working printer to the TimeCapsule USB port, AirPort utility reports No USB Printers connected and I cannot print.
The above steps show that the Printer is not at fault and the USB port on the TimeCapsule is working but for some reason the two will not work together unless I reboot the TimeCapsule which in this household causes mayhem.
This problem has just appeared and the only thing I think could have caused this is a recent firmware update (7.3.2).
Has anybody else had a similar problem? If so were you able to correct the error?
    Thanks.

Ah thanks for that, I searched all through my Time Capsule's options - not just the dust issue, means I dont have to go upstairs either now
p.s.Bug still here, just appears intermittent, printer disappears immediately after a print job is done - so TC needs a reboot before next print (sometimes).
For those talking about resetting the Mac etc this is a bug within the Time Capsule itself as that looses contact with the printer.
I also find it very odd that since day 1, the TC needed to be reset/powered up AFTER the printer has powered up for the printer to be detected. I thought the whole point of USB was "plug and play" or is that a Microsoft thing lol.

  • Printing problem with iPhoto 9.5 version

I have tried to print a photo today, using the Share function in iPhoto.
It did not work. Epson SW438 printer fired up but proceeded to print the picture but without

This is NOT a printer malfunction. I printed successfully a picture through the Finder/Picture folder route.

  • Printer prints postscript code instead of print job every 5 or 9 print jobs.

    Hi,
I have a Xerox Phaser 5880 printer that worked with our old G5 iMac. Upgraded to a new Intel mac when the old iMac died, and have run into intermittent printing problems.
    We have:
Updated to the very latest version of 10.6.7
    Updated the printer firmware
Updated the printer driver (Snow leopard compatible)
Reset the printer service in control panel
Removed and re added the printer
    The Problem:
The first few print jobs typically work, and then the printer will spit out the code of the postscript rather than the document. The print job can be the exact same page printed previously a few seconds ago. If I force the printer language (setting on the printer), to PostScript rather than 'Auto', I get a red error message printed instead, saying "Undefined Command" and "Offending Character" will be either ">>" or "t" or "PS".
I thought I would try to reinstall the 10.6.7 combo update, however it says "The Target Drive" is not available. :\
Unplugging the printers USB cable, and then reinserting it fixes the issue for another few print jobs. As the printer is used in a paper business however, this is a significant problem as expensive paper types are used in the printer.
    Any support is greatly appreciated

  • Imac 3.2GH core i3 and printing

    Hi,
I have a new iMac and I am having trouble printing. I have been on the Apple support but they are unable to help either. The trouble I have is printing photos.
    I have tried two different printers HP Photosmart all-in-one with a resolution of 4800 x 1200 and a Canon PIXMA MG6150 with a resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi.
The prints from, for example, Safari are OK. But from iPhoto the prints resemble something like brail! with the colours all over the place, almost as if the printer can not "mix" the colours.
This was the result on both the HP and Canon printers.
The ink is still wet and takes ages for it to dry on the photo paper.
I tried printing the photo from a different application ie Preview, under a different log on id, cleaning th eprinter head, running test pages, printed a different photo, used a different photot from a separate down load from the camera. All this has made no difference.
The camera I used was a Canon Powershot 9 which is a very high resolution camera and I havenot experienceed this before with the photos from it on a PC.
I am running the printer wireless.
I can not think of any thing else other than perhaps I am experting too much. This is my first computer and I though photos would come out in a reasonable quality that you would be able to put in an album. However, this is not the case.
    Thnaks
    Richard

You do realize that it is not just the settings in the computer, but that the printer actually does the printing. One needs to check all the equipment before putting all the blame on a single one. I have printed outstanding photo quality pages with my iMacs and Epson printers.
To begin with, you did not specify the HP model, so I checked your Canon model. Did you install the correct drivers and other software needed for your printer to communicate with the computer? I found this page:
    http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010891.asp
When you tried to print from Preview for instance, did you check and/or adjust all the settings available in the print window under all the drop down windows? For instance, under color management, there are quite a few choices alone.
And, quite importantly, the ink being wet and taking ages to dry appears to possibly point to a printer malfunction.
