Intermittent Problem - Fans come on full

Hello Members,
A while ago I posted a kernel panic on this forum, and got some useful informtion.  Thanks.
I have a new system, and what seems to me, a NEW problem.
The fans (somewhere) come one full blast (or something, DVD drives??).  In any case the
system makes a very loud noise, which sounds like fans coming on.
The noise seems to be coming from the top of the system, near where the two DVD drives are.
I checked the system, while it was making this noise.
     1.  I stopped the video card fan momentarily - not the problem.
      2.  Stopped the gray fan at the rear by the cards, not the problem.
      3.  Stopped the gray fan near the front of the system, not the problem.
So it is not these three fans causing the noise. My latest issue with this system:
I put the system to sleep over night.  At 8am, I hear the fans come on full (or whatever the noise is).
The system was still "asleep".  I pressed keys on the keyboard, moved the mouse, etc.  The system
would not wake up.  I depressed the power button part way, no wake up there either.
Finally I pressed and held the power button down until system shutdown.  I restarted the system a few
minutes later.  The restart was OK.
I have (counting the system disk) 4 internal SATA drives
2 DVD drives
1 Lacie Quadra d2 running on the PCI ex - USB 3.0
2 G-tech drives running on firewire 800 (for general backup, and one for timemachine)
Processor: 2x2.66 6 Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 24GB, 1333 DDR3 ECC
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5870.
This is a REPLACEMENT system from Apple!  They could not fix a previous system (still under warranty), so they did
provide a new system (thank you Apple).  BUT  the older replaced system exhibited similar problems!
Any one have any ideas?  Yes, I plan to take this system to the apple store, but the issue is so intermittent, that it is unlikely that
the system will make the noise in the store (plus I have to remove peripherals, etc)
Any info will help,
Thank,
Eric

Hello Linc,
Thanks for the confirmation.  I ended up removing the PCI card and uninstalling the driver.
I am now running the drive from the USB 2.0 port on the computer.  Lacie never owned up to
the fact that the PCI express card and USB 3.0 are not "safely" functional on Mac Pro with Lion.
I am testing the system, only time will tell.
Thanks again,
Eric

After a few minutes after start up my iMac fan comes on full and stays on, loud and quite annoying!

    Try an SMC Reset.

  • Hard drive fan comes on full blast for no apparent reason!

I have had this problem since buying my new 27in iMac. It happens maybe once or twice a month. I took it to apple and they said "everything is ok".
I come home from work at night and the machine sounds like a leaf blower on my desk. I pull up iStat widget and it reports the following
    CPU:
    User 0%
    System 0%
    Nice 0%
    Idle 99-100%
    Memory:
    Wired 587mb

    GPU heatsink 101
    mem contoller 103
    Northbridge 131
    Optical 92
    Fans:
    Optical Drive 998rpm
    Hard Drive 5272rpm
    CPU 940
So it is obvious that the HD fan is the one making all the noise, the question is why is it running at that rpm? The machine is cool to the touch and has been at idle all night. Mac Genious had me reset the SMC in several different ways and if that didnt work, bring it in to the store. I did, and he said everything looks fine and passed all diagnostics. He said next time it happens to go into activity monitor and see what is creating the most CPU usage NOT ONE TASK IS USING MORE THAN .9% of CPU. I see nothing out of the ordinary in there. I think a fix for this would be to figure out why the unit doesnt ever actually go to sleep on its own. As soon as I force it to sleep the fans stop and when I wake it they stay off.

  • Fans run at full speed

As in subject, my brand new iMac Aluminium 20" 2GHz has a problem: fans run at full speed...
After reset of PRAM or SMC, fans start slowly (1200rpm) but rise ti 3500rpm after few minutes and they don't change until a new restore of SMC.
    cpu 3-4%,
    no apllication opened,
    nothing in dashboard.
What's happen?? I've never had a problem with my mac!
PS: sorry for my bad english, I'm italian!

    Hi, just an update -
I ran the Apple Hardware Test on startup, and it returned this hardware error: 4SNS/1/40000000:TpoP
I brought my machine to the Apple Store where I bought it and they ran their diagnostics and said there was nothing wrong. So when I picked it up we booted it up in the store and the fan was about 1200rpm, no problem. We ran the Apple Hardware Test in the store and it didn't give the same hardware error that I'd had before.
So, I didn't really have any ammunition to press them any further on it and for the last week it's been fine. I had the fan race on me again last night but I hope it was an isolated incident.
As for downgrading to OSX 10.4, I'd consider it but I don't feel that I should have to do that to make my hardware perform correctly.
Re. smcFanControl, I thought the purpose of that is to make the fans run faster/more often, but if anyone's used it to stop them from running too fast/too often I'd be glad to hear from you.
Maybe the 10.5.2 version of the OS will take care of this problem, if indeed a problem exists.

  • HP Pavilion a6110n Startup Problems, Fan Runs Full Tilt and then Shuts Down

We are currently running into an issue where our computer, when we try to power it on, turns on briefly with the fan running at full tilt.  After a few seconds, the computer then shuts down and everything turns off.  When the monitor is connected, we never do see anything show up there.  We opened up the case and cleaned out the fan and the cooling unit completely, and then we even completely removed and then reconnected the unit.  Still, the computer continues to do the same thing.  Does this sound like a bad sensor?  Like the computer thinks it is overheating and just shuts itself down?
Thanks for any help.  We tried some of the advice we found on here, like stated above, and seem to have run out of options.

    Hi Big_Mike_180,
It is the same for the desktop or notebook. The one blink means that you are having an issue with the CPU, unfortunately. At this point if you are in warranty give HP Total Care a call at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or visit the link below if you are outside North America.
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html
Or take it to a local tech to check the CPU.
    Thank you,

  • Handling of an intermittent disk fan problem by AppleCare

I have (or at least I am supposed to have) an iMac 27".
However since I received the system late November 2009 from the Apple Store I have problems with the system. First the hard disk (WD 1TB) had a constant rumbling. After having the machine for most of December in the Apple workshop the disk was replaced by an Hitachi 1TB without this problem. However during January/February after several days the disk fan all of a sudden started to blow continuously very loud without any reason (temperature according to iStat in range) at 4500 rpm. Also the fan would not return to normal cooling/noise level. Resetting the SMC did not help. During most of March the machine was back at the Apple repair shop where the disk was replaced again. However after starting to use the system several days passed and the fan started again to blow very loud. I called the Apple repairman to my home and he confirmed the problem. Machine again back to the Apple repair shop were it now stays for another three weeks. The problem has reappeared in the workshop after several days but the repairman is asked to perform several additional tests by AppleCare, requiring again a long wait for the machine to get into the intermittent problem.
Has anybody out there had similar experience with the iMac 27" and what has been your experience with AppleCare?
I have suggested that Apple replace the system but until now I have had no success and the machine has already staid more than 3 months of it's 5 months life at an Apple repair shop.

I have been in touch with customer relations as well but they were not helpful. In their opinion I should switch the machine off every night to avoid the problem...

  • Problem: Fan at full speed all the time - even when the Mac is turned off

    Hello,
my Mac mini suffers from a very strange problem. I've had it for half a year now and recently bought a new power adaptor since my old one got damaged. I plugged it in and everything was fine - until half an hour afterwards, when the fan suddenly made itself noticeable at full speed. But it didn't stop; it went on, curiously even when I shut the Mac mini down. That's right. even when the system's turned off. The noise is really unbearable and only stops when I plug off the power cord.
Any ideas why this is happening?

My Mini started doing this yesterday. I came home from work and the fan was going full blast. Even after shutting the machine down, the fan would continue to run at full speed (and it is LOUD...much louder than my full tower desktop PC with 4 80mm fans). The only way to stop the fan is to completely unplug the Mini from the power supply.
I doubt that this is due to faulty wiring as my Mini is plugged in to a very nice UPS unit that conditions the power.
Now, I'm willing to admit that this may be entirely my fault since I have upgraded my Mini with 1 GB of RAM, a Pioneer DVD burner, and a higher capacity hard drive. However, the Mini has been running 24-hours-a-day for 5-6 months since my final upgrade, so it would seem that my upgrades are unrelated to this issue. Also, since someone else is having the same problem, again, my upgrades seem unrelated.
I was told on another forum to try resetting the PMU, which I will try when I get home today. If it works, I'll post. Seems unlikely though since the fan runs even when the Mini is powered down.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. I'm assuming that my Mini is no longer under the 1-year warranty since I have performed so many upgrades myself, so, if this problem is something that can only be fixed by Apple, then it will probably cost an arm and a leg.

  • Ix4-300 fan keeps running full blast and the NAS never comes online

When I turn on the ix4-300 after a couple of seconds its fan starts running full blast but the NAS never comes online.  The NAS lcd was damaged in the move so I don't know what is going on, it was working fine for a couple of weeks (with the damaged lcd) but this started happening a few days ago.  Things that I've tried:
Used the other ix4-300 (I've 2) with the faulty NAS... same result
Let the NAS run with full FANS for 4 plus hours ......, Still didn't come online
Also both the blue and white light are constant .... no blinking whatsoever.
    Any ideas ...

It could be the device itself. Is it covered by the warranty?
Are you concerned about retrieving the data or do you just want the device back up and running properly?
If you are not concerned about data, you can try the following procedure at your own risk:
Power down the device and reseat all the drives in the device. Power the device back on.
If this doesn’t allow unit to boot, continue with below process.
       1. Turn off the device and pull out all the drives.
       2. Place any other drive 2, 3 or 4 in the first slot and boot up the device.
       3. Wait for sometime as the boot-up process can be slow.
             a. If it doesn’t boot, try another disk in slot 1.
       4. If it boots up correctly, insert another disk in slot 2.
            - Check UI for disk detection.
            a. If second disk is detected, turn it off, place disk 3 and 4 in unit and boot up.
            b. If it doesn’t boot-up correctly, remove 3 or 4 and retry. You may need to try to determine if 3 or 4 is bad in this case.
       5. Recreate the volume if it doesn’t start regenerating automatically

  • My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) has cursor problems when the fan comes on.

Hi, I have been trying a variety of recommendations to see why my MacBook Pro seems to be having slowness issues.  yes, I took it in to the Mac store and they found nothing.  I have tried some other things that I think may have helped but now I see that specifically the cursor goes crazy when the fan kicks in and when the fan goes off it is okay again.  I have run SMART Utility & I didn't see anything from that.

The fans coming on and the cursor going crazy are a correlation, not a cause-and-effect.
The fans come on when measured temperatures inside your computer are getting too high. The fans come on to try to exhaust the excess heat. If the cursor goes crazy at the same time, this is likely to also be caused by the computer getting too hot, not by the fans.
    This is one possible cause:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • Mac Fan runs at full Speed from start, even in standby mode!

    Hi Folks
Since this night my iMac's fan (summer 2012 model) runs at full speed from the beginning of powering it on. It even runs at full speed when I put the iMac to sleep!
So far I tried to reset the SMC three times, noo effect at all. I checked also the activity log, no processes or other activities are causing this. I read about defect HDD sensors, could that be the problem?
Any ideas how to fix or at least control this issue???
Thank you all for your help!
    Matt
PS: That's a pretty annoying sound I'm hearing here, I feel like on the roof top of the Hancock Building at wind speed 200!

I have tried the SMC reset as instructed and the fan is running normally.  It is a bit of an intermittent problem so I will monitor the performance of the computer over the coming weeks.  If it persists, I will take it in to a service centre while it remains under warranty.
I guess the "cure" I had stumbled across by accident was nothing to do with turning the computer upside down, it was because I was unknowingly performing an SMC reset. The reason I turned the computer upside down was to find the serial number on the base of the stand so I could report the fault to Apple. Of course, when I plugged it back in to contact the support line, it worked fine.
Once again, thanks for your help.

  • Macbook fans come on a lot

Hi everyone. Eversince my macbook came back from the random shutdown problem repair, I think that my fans come on a lot. For example, if I am just watching anything with flash (e.g. youtube, google videos, etc) or watching a DVD, the fans will come on full blast.
Is this normal? Do ya'll also have the fans coming on when doing something slightly intensive?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem. Very very annoying. I'm
running 10.4.8, and since this upgrade, my fan ALWAYS
comes on full blast with any movie, video ichat,
    flash video, etc.
I'm contemplating switching to a MBP because of this
as well as some poor performance with my MB.
That's the way it's supposed to work. Unfortunately, with the graphics circuit used in the MacBook, it puts a load on the processors causing the fan to ramp up when viewing most video.
I play poker with a 3-D software application that causes my fan to run loud when there are a lot of players present, and video action going on. I may upgrade to a pro too when the CoreDuo 2 models come out. About the only thing I don't like about the MacBook is the weaker graphic performance.

  • My iMac G5 Fans run at full speed when using regular everyday applications.

When using just normal everyday applications such as using about 30 min of Safari to surf the web or maybe something else, my fans run at full speed. I have just got a new logic board replacing my old faulty one. How can I fix the fan problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi again Miriam,
With more news for you and iMacG5 on the fans go crazy. I just got back my computer from the repair center. After more than a week under observation, the technician told me that they just couldn't replicate the problem. They had the computer running non-stop during all this time, not even allowingit to go to sleeo mode and nothing.
The CPU fan never went beyond 2300 rpm (or so) and never went to sleep mode on and off by itself. Furthermore, they ran all possible tests and everything comes back as OK.
Right now I have a movie running on the background, together with a photo processing software open and other smaller processes and the CPU fan is running at 4361 rpm !!! the temp of the CPU is 66.3 Celsius.
Any thoughts??? It's really making me crazy because the computer was neverlike this and now it sounds like a hair dryer. I emphasized with them the fact that this just started after they changed the logic board and as coincidence after Ioaded the security update 2006_04. The technician told me it may be software related. If the computer doesn't go to sleep by itself, then he recommended to reload the operating system.
    Any comments appreciated.

  • Very noisy iMac, fans running at full speed even when performing smal tasks

I have a 2009 21 iMac, recently the computer became very noisy with the fans running at full speed all the time even when checking the email or just using Safari. I don't do anything crazy like 3d renderings so I don't know why the fans wont stop. I recently cleaned it but this didn't seem to solve the problem.
Anyone knows what's the problem and how can I fix it?
    Thanks

  • G5 fans - runs at full speed

One of my MACs (G5 2.0DP) can't slow down - the fans runs at full speed all the time (OSX 10.3.9) - hardware test - PMU - disconnect powersupply - exit single user mode - I think I did all that's in the "book" - but the fans are still running at full speed - all the time.
    any ideas?

    Hello,
I am not sure if you have the same issue, but I might be worth it for you to read the archive:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=561296&start=0&tstart=0
And here is the end of my story:
Regarding my issue with the fan fan full force, yes it was resolved... but not without fighting for it!
Fortunately the machine was still under warranty, and I left it with Apple care during an oversea trip in August. End of August I picked it up suppositely fixed and after a few hours of work I noticed the same symptoms were still there! You can be sure I made it clear to Apple service I was not happy. I left the machine again for a week and 1/2 and picked it up again. They told me they replace the logic board. Again a few hours of work of testing and this time I could repeatidly hang up the machine. Back to Apple, I told them I didn't want to pick it up until they REALLY tested it! This time they replace the logic borad again, the power supply and something else?...
Anyway since then the machine works just like it did before : great, no hardware system related issues.
Unfortunately I cannot tell you for sure what was the problem: logic board? CPUs? power supply?... and I could not get the information from Apple care, especially I would have been interested in the specific procedure they follow to fix my problem... but for some reasons they don't want to share this information...
I hope your machine is still under warranty... other wise you'll have to weigh the pros and cons to have it fixed, especially if they replace the logic board ($900 I believe) or any other main components...
    I hope this help,
    Good luck,
    David

  • Help intermittent problem with logging in

Help i have intermittent problem with logging in, sometimes it just comes up with the desktop without any icons or dock and i have to restart the server so i can log on properly, but it doesn't happen all the time, any ideas would be appreciated???

The clients login window just shakes and won't login. I did find one thing that helps some of my Mac Lab woes.
Some students get a dock that only has 3 icons. These students also will have saving and printing problems when they get this default dock.
I think some of the problems occur when the student gets over quota, some preference files get corrupted.
    1. Student will login.
    2. Open the student's home folder. Then open Library and Preferences.
    3. Find the file com.apple.homesync.plist and delete it.
    4. Empty Safari Cache and the user's Trash Can and make sure they are not over quota.
    5. Logout and login.
This will fix some problems, but not the problem when students can't login at all.
