Intermittent problem putting my 24" iMac to sleep.

About every tenth time I attempt to put my iMac to sleep it will do the following: The screen dims a bit, the cursor disappears and the clock stops. The machine then becomes totally unresponsive and all I can do is do a forced shutdown.
I thought it might have been the 'safe sleep' function so I disabled it. No change. I cleaned out all the caches, repaired permissions, checked the drive directory, reset the machine (pulling the cord, waiting and then putting back in and starting it up). Then I reset everything there is to reset! No change.
Has anyone had this happen? If so, have you found a solution?
Griff

Just to report a resolution to the problem putting my 24" iMac to sleep...
As I said, I put in two fresh 1G DIMMs (Shika brand). The two Kingston DIMMs were found to be defective. The sleep problem seems to be resolved. Also I found that a second problem (Applications suddenly and unexpectedly quitting) seems to have been resolved as well.
Something else I found as well is that the machine runs much faster. Right off the bat, when I ran the Apple Hardware Test, it was completed in 53 seconds. With my previous RAM it took over two minutes to complete.
Conclusion: Even if Utilities such as the Hardware Test and TechTool Pro 4 report no problem with RAM, some of the problems that people are experiencing that appear to be software based may be caused by bad RAM. It might be an idea to download and run Memtest or Rember over a period of a few hours to see if there is a problem. Or if you have access to a supply of RAM, you could swap in new ones and see if the problems go away.

  • USB connection won't allow iMac to sleep

When I put my new iMac to sleep running 10.6.2, either from the Apple menu or the power button, it immediately wakes up.
I've disconnected my Firewire devices and determined that my external SoundStick speakers on a USB port are somehow causing the computer to wake up when I want it to sleep. When I disconnect them, the sleep mode works fine.
I've also noticed, even when the SoundSticks are connected, it takes about 30 seconds for the computer to go to sleep.
Any suggestions how to get around these problems, short of buying new speakers (or a new computer)?
    Thanks

I'm embarrassed to tell you this, but my problem was not with either the iMac or the SoundSticks. I had the latter incorrectly plugged into a switched outlet on my surge protector. When the iMac went to sleep it was shutting down the SoundSticks, which apparently sent some sort of signal before switching off that caused the computer to come back on.
Thanks all of you for taking time to respond.

  • Having problems putting iMac to sleep?

I've noticed lately that I have to click SLEEP two or three time to put my iMac into sleep mode.  Is this the start of a bigger problem and what do I have to do to fix the problem.  Any assistance will be appreciated.

  • HT2412 iMac "deep sleep" problem

Hi, I have a iMac 27" Late 2012 and it keeps going in "deep sleep" when I leave it unattended during the day. When I come back, I have to wait for my mac to load the saved state which is quite long. I had many macs in my life and it's the first time I encounter the problem. I've seen that sleep mode before when my MacBook would be out of battery, but never on a desktop... My energy saver settings are set to never sleep (computer) and 15 minutes (display). My setting in Privacy/Advanced/Log out after XX min of inactivity is also off. I checked my hibernation mode in the terminal and it is set to 0. Out of ideas. Anyone ?
    Thank you !

I have the same problem on my black MacBook. My problem is intermittent. Sometimes restart works; sometimes I'll select restart, but after the logout it never really shuts down. Black screen, glowing status indicator, completely unresponsive. I've also left it overnight with no change. The only "fix" is to do a hard shut down with the power button, whereupon I'm presented with the annoying "computer wasn't shut down properly" message on startup. No kidding! But no matter how many times I report it, no response.
I've tried resetting the power manager, I've tried zapping the pram. I've tried reinstalling the system -- I just nuked and paved this weekend, with no change. So either it's a hardware problem, or something fundamentally wrong with the OS. But since I don't hear a lot of people complaining about this one, that makes me think it's specific to my (and your) computer...
I called Apple about it while still under warranty, but got no helpful suggestions. The nearest apple store is 7 hours away, so I can't just pop in and show off my problem

I can't put my imac to sleep anymore after installing the security update for Java. Is anyone else having this problem?

I had the download file open all the time and closing that has solved (looks like) the problem.  However, this was not an issue while I use the regular mouse.

  • Power off after putting iMac to Sleep

    Have you ever experienced this?
Put you iMac to Sleep and it powers down - not a shut down, but the power goes off - no blinking light, no whirring of the hard drive, no sign of life!
I have read and performed many of the tips regarding NVRAM, SMU, PMU, etc. resets. None have worked.
    Situation 1-
Use the 'sleep' command - moments after the machine powers off.
    Situation 2 -
iMac screen saver will run for a short time, then screen goes blank, the power light illuminates, the fan spins full speed, and the machine is totally unresponsive to mice clicks or movements, or keyboard entries.
    Situation 3 -
Sometimes upon power up, the iMac doesn't start, but you can hear a faint buzz sound from the back of the machine. Similar to audio hum.
These problems occur whether or not other devices are connected to the iMac.
    Connections-
Standard USB devices - mice, card reader,
    Bluetooth keyboard
    Ehternet
    Power Settings-
    Screen saver 5 minutes
Energy Saver - to sleep when inactive - 15 minutes, display to sleep - 15 minutes.
Various other settings tried with no change in problem.
I suspect the power supply. What's your opinion?

I began experiencing the same thing this week (two days ago). I also tried repairing permissions, resetting SMU, and removing the iTunes receipts (Library/Receipts) since this is what caused an earlier failure to sleep. The difference is then the computer would not sleep, now it shuts off instead of sleeping.

Sometimes after putting my iMac to sleep, I cannot get it to wake up again. It's as if it's shut down and I have to turn it off at the mains and restart it.  Any ideas why? Does this keep happening to anybody else?

That message means that you have to restore the iPad now. Something went wrong. You need to restore the iOS software and then restore from the backup.
Read this carefully and follow the instructions. Make sure that you restore from your backup at the end of the process. That is covered at the bottom of the support article.

  • Put iMac to Sleep, Warm in the AM

Before I go to bed each night, I manually put my iMac to Sleep from the Apple menu. Within a few seconds it shuts down and makes no noise (no fans).
Most mornings however, when I awake, I can hear the fans spinning (primarily the hard disk fan using Activity Monitor), and the top of the computer is warm. When these fans come on I cannot tell, but I'm pretty sure the computer doesn't light/wake up, show the desktop on both monitors, and then go back to screen saving mode and then eventually the screens go dark but the fans still run and the computer stays warm (e.g. not sleeping, just the displays are black).
How do I put the computer to sleep at night, so NOTHING runs (no fans) and the computer is cold in the morning?
    Thanks.

Nothings happening, tried the mouse, tried the keyboard, nothing. I followed the instructions for resetting the SMC and the only thing I get is the light sound I describbed in my earlier message. The more i listen I don't think it's the cd drive, I feel like that would be a little louder than the sound I hear. What I'm hearing sounds like a light spinning sound almost like the hard drive when yo click the keyboard to wake it up, except it keeps doing it over and over again until I unplug the mac. When I plug it back in, it will not make the sound until I press the power button on the back.

  • Firewire drives won't spin down when I put iMac to sleep

I have three external hard drives connected to my iMac in a FW800 daisy chain. It used to be, when I put my iMac to sleep, all three of the external drives would spin down and go quiet. I replaced the drive in the middle of the chain with a new one (both LaCie), and now none of the three external drives spin down when my I sleep my iMac.
Does anyone know how to get them to spin down?

It's a known issue for many many brands of FW800 drives.  I've been reporting this to apple for a while.  With 10.9.2, my particular drives will spin down if they are mounted and unmounted but if my system wakes from sleep which will spin up all drives, they stay that way until I mount and unmount again.  So....10.9.2 is a little better but FW is still borked.
This is the primary reason my Mac Pro is still on Mountain LIon.  My MBA is on mavericks.  A note of caution...Mavericks writes to the NVRAM, sometimes when dual booting it is good to clear that memory.

What command or key combo are you using to put it to sleep?
Option-Command-Eject works for me. You have to hold the combo for about 1/2 second or more since the delay was put into the Eject key some time ago.

  • Applecare - Solving intermittent problems

My year and a half old 27 inch iMac has developed an intermittent problem. In the middle of my using it, the screen will suddenly go black.
This happens regardless of the sleep settings and the computer is not really asleep when it happens. Any sound that the Mac is playing continues to play and if I put my ear up against the machine, I can hear the hard drive and/or internal fans spinning. But the screen remains black no matter how much I click around.
The only way I can get the picture back is to press the power button to put the computer to sleep, wait a few seconds, and then wake it back up again. Sometimes the problem will go away for a while and sometimes it will happen repeatedly, making it very difficult to get any work done.
I took the Mac into the nearest authorized service center (not an Apple Store) and they kept it for 24 hours, during which time they ran diagnostics software on it and tried to see if they can reproduce the problem, but they couldn't.
When I came in to pick up the computer, they told me if I brought it in again and they weren't able to reproduce the problem, they would have to charge me $50, because Apple doesn't compensate them for work that is not performed. They said that, although this policy is sometimes waived, that this is true even at an Apple Store.
Is this really true? If so, I'm wondering how one can get an intermittent problem solved? The reason I bought AppleCare was to avoid problems like this. How about if I brought my Mac into an Apple Store and I left it there for a week to give them plenty of time to reproduce the problem?

It's not true for an Apple Store, no, not if the system is under warranty or under an AppleCare extended service contract. At least I've never heard of an Apple Store charging such a fee. To the best of my knowledge authorized service centers are indeed compensated by Apple only for fixing problems, not for diagnostics that turn up no fault, so a service center may charge a diagnostic fee for situations where they can't find a problem.
Make an appointment at your local Apple Store and talk to them about the issue.
    Regards.

  • UPS and our iMac // Will not allow iMac to sleep.

    Hello,
We have a Cyberpower UPS (CP685AVR) for our 20" iMac 2.66Ghz (last gen)and it works great. It has a USB interface to communicate with the iMac's power manager, and tells me how much juice is left, how the cells are doing, etc.
The only problem is the UPS will not allow the iMac to sleep; if I try to manually put it to sleep, it will wake again in 10-15sec. If I disconnect the UPS, the iMac works just fine. There are no third-party drivers, either. Cyberpower relies on Apple's built-in UPS support. I've been leaving the USB cable unplugged but would like like to use it if possible.
Has anyone had an issue like this, and what has been your experience? Thanks.

I won't buy Cyberpower anymore since I had one burn up on me so I have not had any experience with their newer models. I have 2 APC's and they work fine with the built in Energy Saver settings.
Are you connecting the USB directly to the back? I'm not sure if it will help but you might try resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US

  • Apple keyboard or mouse won't wake up iMac from sleep.

After I put my iMac to sleep the keyboard or mouse won't wake it up. I have to push the power button to awaken it. Wake from sleep is enabled in bluetooth preferences so that is not the problem. Otherwise keyboard and mouse are working fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Regrettably, I can't offer a solution to the problem stated in the title. Instead, I experience the same problem.
    Wireless Mighty Mouse circa 2007
    Wireless Apple Keyboard circa 2007
Bluetooth dongle (a bluetooth thingy connected to a USB port)
Things worked fine until an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Following the upgrade there were several mouse related issues. Those were resolved. One issue remains: waking by use of mouse or keyboard.
The setup (Same for keyboard and mouse)
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Keyboard Connected --- Keyboard Paired. The "Discoverable" box is checked.
    Digging deeper
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Advanced --- "Allow Bluetooth device to wake this computer" --- This option is unchecked and is greyed out, inaccessible. Two of the other options are checked and available: the options about opening the Bluetooth assistant and the one about prompting incoming audio.
I've searched other posts. However, many of the other posts seem to conflate this Wake/Sleep issue with various connection issues. Thus, the advice given is a bit confusing to this amateur. Might one of you experts have a solution to this annoying little problem?
    Thanks for your interest.

  • IMac wont sleep after 10.6.3 update

I just bought a new 27" iMac i7 on saturday, I barely had time to do anything to the machine before I updated on monday to 10.6.3. The iMac was going to sleep just fine before the update, now when I put the iMac to sleep, it will go to sleep, but after a few minutes it wakes itself up. I've looked at my sys.log, but it doesnt give me any reason for it's wake up.
Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know of a solution?
The whole point of replacing my MacPro with this iMac was to save a bit on electricity costs. But now that point is moot because I cant put it to sleep! Please help!

    HI,
    First, try Resetting the PRAM
Restart your iMac. If the problem persists, try Resetting the SMC
Sorry you are experiencing problems with a brand new iMac! If you did not repair disk permissions, do that. Repair permissions after every software update.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
