Intermittent scratching noise on pb 1.67 hard drive

I've done a search on this issue and know it has been discussed, but I was not able to find anything dealing specifically with my issue.
I have a pb 1.67 with an 80g hd that makes an intermitten whirring, actually more like a scratching sound. I've noticed that when it does it and I'm typing or opening a window, the computer hesitates. Because it's happening more and more often, it is causing my pb to run slow (hesitating task completions). Editing video, typing on Word has been an absolute hassle.
I've contacted apple and they had me try some things: repair permissions, repair disk (found a minor repair needed on a volume header and fixed it). BTW, I've got the hard drive partitioned into two (one as an emergency hd that I keep the os and diskwarrior). I've run every utility I can think of (onyx, dw, etc) and still having issues.
I am planning on taking it in to an apple service provider, but I was wanting some input from all of you to go into the shop a little smarter. Do I need to demand a new hard drive? I can't find the brand name of my hd otherwise I'd give it. I am concerned that my hd will go and i will lose all of my files, so I am planning on backing up this afternoon.
Thanks for all of your help!

Raul
The symptoms you describe are consistent, but not exclusively, with a failing hard drive. If you have already tried other options then I would say it is more likely than not that the drive is failing.
Therefore it is wise to backup immdiately - but make sure the backup is cloned onto an external FireWire drive that is bootable. Do not use a USB drive. Use either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to do the backup and make sure you test the backup afterwards by restarting from it.
An Apple Authorised Service Provider itself does not offer a longer warranty term on any Apple product unless you are buying the AppleCare Protection Plan (which is only available for purchase within the first year of ownership).
However an AASP can carry out an out-of-warranty repair, payable by the customer. Personally I would have no qualms in using a local AASP as some of them can be very knowledgeable. Furthermore they don't always send repair jobs back to Apple.
In terms of warranty, only a longer warranty from the retailer that the PowerBook was purchased from will help in this situation. If the retailer did not include a longer warranty, you did not purchase any additional warranty or you don't have insurance that might cover such an event, then alas the cost of a repair will have to be met by yourself.
Here in the UK replacing the hard drive can cost around £60-70 (for an 80GB drive) if the installation was carried out by yourself following instructions from ifixit.com (be aware it is not a simple job for a novice). On the other hand I have had an AASP charge around £50 to replace the internal hard drive. Therefore a hard drive replacement is not a prohibitively expensive job.

  • MacBook Pro 'Crunching/Grinding' noise, is it the fan/hard drive?

I posted a YouTube video so you could hear the noise my MacBook Pro 15 inch laptop is making. Here is the link as well as the copy/pasted description I used on YouTube (too lazy to re-write) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW8bIOeOv-w
    Hi guys,
Two weeks ago my MacBook Pro started getting really hot on the back left hand side of the keyboard area -- to the point that I couldn't have it resting on my legs.
It is now making a crunching noise from the same area. Sometimes it doesn't crouch and other times it's so loud it sounds like an expiring bomb. It doesn't have to do with how many programs I'm using. I just watched a full movie and it was silent on the crunch noise ... Other times nothing is running and it's just sitting there crunching away.
Not sure if this is a fan or hard drive issue -- I've YouTubed other videos but my noise seems to be completely different from everything I've found. Any help would be great.
Heading into Apple tomorrow but I'm worried it'll stop making the noise when I go in, like the car whose breaks squeak until you take it to the mechanic type of thing.
Any help would be grateful appreciated and received.
    Best, MPG.

The technicians at the genius bar can listen to your link as well.
    Ciao.

  • Intermittently using Time Machine with an External Hard Drive

Ok, Kappy answered some questions I had about how Time Machine works with an external hard drive.
After doing more reading about Time Machine, I found out that a person can, for example, leave the drive powered-off for a couple of weeks and only periodically or intermittently use Time Machine for back up. However, in the online article I read dated 2009, the author suggested that he didn't know how well Time Machine would work making up for the two weeks, or however long, no files had been backed up.
Specific questions: I have 10.6.3 SL (I have not yet been brave enough to download 10.6.4) and a 4 month old iMac. 1) Have any of you had experience with only periodically using Time Machine for back up and 2) with my current system would you think I might run into some trouble if I only intermittently backed-up using Time Machine?
Thanks for reading this and thanks if you feel my questions warrant answering.
Note: I do have another external hard drive where I occasionally manually back-up photos, gifs, music, etc.

If you go several days between backups, Time Machine may have to do a "deep traversal," comparing every folder on your system to the backups, to determine what's changed and needs to be backed-up. This depends on the volume of changes, so can happen after an OSX update, but in other circumstances might be after several days. This isn't a big problem, but it does take longer, and the more data you have, the longer it takes.
Worse, after an extended period, Time Machine may do a new, full backup of your entire system, rapidly filling-up your TM drive.
If that's the way you want to back up, Time Machine is not the backup app for you. One of it's main features is the way it can do quick hourly backups of what's changed, so you have an excellent chance of recovering a previous version (or versions) when you change or delete something in error, or a file comes up corrupted, or your Mac fails.
Why don't you want to just leave the drive connected and Time Machine running, to protect you best, as it was designed to do?
For alternatives designed to do less frequent backups, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup.

  • Noise level with all four hard drive bays utilized

    Hello!
I've finally placed my order on a Mac Pro (Early 2009) after spending a lot of time figuring out what CPU and memory options that would best fit my needs (for those interested 2x2.26GHz, 12GB, ATI 4870). What I didn't order was the hard drives...
I've read (for older Mac Pros?) that if you put in hard drives in all four bays, the system that previously was very silent becomes somewhat noisy (due to vibrations?) - can anyone confirm if this is true?
My plan was to add 4xWestern Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 32MB 1TB, and set up a software RAID. I heard suggestions that it would be better having only one hard drive in the Mac Pro and to add an external RAID that you could switch off if not needed.
My other alternate is to add SSD drives to lower any noise (and to make the system a bit snappier).
Anyway.. would be interesting to know if the system becomes noticeably noisier with additional hard drives (might only be relevant for older systems <= 2008)!?
Thank you for all your help!
    Best regards,
    Stephan

Got four of them in my first generation MP and it's quiet as a mouse. However, if you do not assure that the drive mounting screws are tight and the trays properly pushed in, then there's a hum that can be quite annoying. Newer generation MPs I've heard now have rubber dampers for the drive mounting screws that should eliminate the hum problem we've had in the first generation model.

  • Keeps saying capture scratch full but loads space on hard drive

When using capture now after 9 mins or less the capture stops and says capture scratch full. I just click ok and then click now again .it restarts capture. Anyway to capture a 90 min tape without having to stop start all the time?

When using capture now after 9 mins or less the capture stops and says capture scratch full.
This sounds suspiciously like you are using an external hard drive formatted as FAT, which has a 2GB file size limitation, which is about 9 minutes of DV video.
What drive are you using for your capture scratch, and what is it formatted as?

  • My laptop is making a clicking noise and I think it's coming from the hard drive. Is this normal?

My laptop is making a clicking noise and I think it's coming from the hard drive.  I uploaded audio of the clicking to: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15528211/Memo.m4a.  Is this a normal sound or an indication of a problem?  Thanks in adance.
    Info:
HP Pavilion G6-1b70us - Purchased 2 days ago from Office Max

That is a hard drive clicking. It sounds kind of intermittent like it might be just the hard drive safety system parking the read head on the drive. Do you get a sustained click when you try to boot up? Have you tried the hard drive health test in the BIOS? Just tap F10 as you power up and go into the setup/bios and look for the hard drive self-test and run the long form version and see what you get.

  • IMac Mid 2007 Hard Drive Making weird noise

My 20 Inch Aluminum iMac from mid 2007 started to make some weird noises today when I turned it on. Not the usual noises but a mix between a creeking noise and a scratching noise. I have a program called smart reporter and my hard drive is not failing, but it is making noise. It is the hard drive because I checked the fan speed, and I know what the fan sounds like when they are on very high, also it is not the microphone, or speakers, i tested them both. I do not know what to do and this is a major problem, since my warranty expired on august 31st. Please help, I am open to anything, Thanks.

    Good question.
If the hard drive in your intel iMac was as easy to replace as the one in the G5 iMacs I would suggest buying a new drive and installing it yourself. Unfortunately it's not for the faint of heart.
I'm not sure how much Apple or an Apple authorized service center will charge you for a new hdd and install. I would call around and ask.
You can always just make sure your files are backed up and just wait. Who knows. It could be a couple years before it dies or tomorrow if that the problem. It's up to you.

  • SATA Hard Drive no longer recognized by Mega 865

I recently put together an MSI Mega 865 barebone system with the following specifications:
Processor: Intel 3.2c Ghz (Northwood core)
Hard Drive:  Western Digital SATA 10kRPM Raptor
    Memory: 1 GB (2 x 512MB) Kingston 3200 (400Mhz)
DVD Player: Plextor 8X DVD RW
Video Card:  HIS Excalibure 9800Pro 128 MB
    OS:  WinXP
Finally got everything up and running, and then I went to boot up, and the system can no longer find the SATA harddrive.  In fact, it's not even an option in the BIOS now.
    My question is the following:
Would the SATA be available all of the time, or only if a SATA enabled harddrive was recognized?
When the system is first powered on by plugging the power cord into the wall, the hard drive makes a small amount of noise, as if it's spinning a bit.  When the computer starts up, there is no noise at all, although the hard drive does get warm (which makes me think there is power to the unit).
I tried the 2nd power supply (old IDE) for the hard drive, but that provided that same results as the SATA power supply.
There were some inconsistencies with my mega 865 prior to this.  First, the HIFI would randomly lock up, and the only way to get it back was to unplug the computer from the wall.  2nd, it had lost communication on the serial port (why, I don't know).  3rd, and final, it doesn't seem to recognize my hard drive (or my hard drive is ruined).
Can someone help me out here, I'm not sure whether to return my HardDrive, my MSI Mega 865, or both.

The system worked for 4 days or so.  One day, I started it up, and it couldn't boot because it couldn't detect the SATA drive.  When this happened I decided to flash it to the the latest BIOS, but even this did not help.
The unit had problems before, it would lock up on initial power up, the HIFI/CD/DVD would not respond (when the computer was not on of course).  I would have to plug and unplug the unit 3 or 4 times before it would power on and not lock up.
I contacted MSI support, and explained my problems.  They told me to return the unit to the reseller.  I'm not sure if the problem was the unit, the hard drive, or both, so I went ahead and returned the HD and the MSI unit.  It'll be another 2 weeks or so now before I get my computer up and running.  :(

  • No Hard Drive Or Volume Icon In Powerbook G4 Firewire (aluminium) Disk Utilities: Reads Error: No Valid Packages (-9997)

Whilst performing a zero/erase install on my Powerbook G4 Firewire (aluminium) with an OSX Tiger install disk (Tiger was the OSX i had erased), I had to force quite the installer as it appeared to be stuck on the Chinese script install section. I crashed the Powerbook down using the power button method. Now, when i power up the computer, it stays on the grey screen and just beeps at me. If i insert the install disks (both OSX Tiger or the original Powerbook Panther ones) there is no volume found  during the install process. In disk utilities no hard drive icon or volumes appear in the left hand list, just 2 headings regarding the OSX install disk. I have clicked 'Verify Disk Permissions' on these headings and receive this message in the action box: Error: No Valid Packages (-9997). All other options in disk utilities are not available to use (partitions section etc), as there is no hard drive recognized to perform anything on. I presume my erase install has wiped out my previous OSX Tiger without installing some essential on the Powerbook (receipts perhaps?). My Powerbook was working 100% before this install attempt. It's a very lightly used machine with no noises/whirrs coming from the hard drive that would suggest failure of some kind. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks for your advice old comm guy.
I have run the Hardware Test as supplied with the Powerbooks install disks and everything has passed. I presume i can put my mind at rest about it being a problem in any of those departments. I have been browsing for a couple of weeks now and think my problem could be a loss in receipts/permissions somewhere. I remember looking for a lost file awhile back using a hard drive search programme through Terminal. It filled my hard drive almost to the maximum with unwanted retrieved files, it took me hours to erase all this again (never found the document i was looking for either). Perhaps a receipt was erased/trashed at this time?. Sometime later (prob weeks) i performed a fresh OSX install to give me an uncluttered faster running machine (I do this once a year). I zero erased the hard drive (including free space) and it was during this install that i had to force quit. It seemed to be stuck loading the Chinese Script so i had no option. After this the problem as described above has been persistent. Is there a way to restore receipts/permissions through Terminal or something like that?. Or maybe a procedure that one has to do when installing a new hard drive?. A step by step guide from someone would be a real help as i am not really confident using these advanced procedures.

  • Hard drive is noisy

hello, i have an hp elitebook 8570w, running on windows 7 64 bit. it is fairly new (around 4 months old). it has been extremely noisy in the past few days (4 or so), and i am pretty sure the noise is coming from the hard drive. the noise begins as soon as i boot up my computer so it doesnt have to do with it heating up. before that the computer would heat up often because i sometimes put it on my bed, which i know is not the best place to put it. after the noise started i bought a cooling board so now the computer never gets hot at all. the noise is coming from the left side under the laptop. and it is a constant huming or grinding like sound (pretty supid description, but i dont know how to explain it), it is fairly loud and it´s been driving me crazy. also no clicking or anything. i believe it comes from the hard drive, but i am not an expert so i cant be sure. my hard drive model is "hitachi hts727550a9e364". i tried to defrag it, but it was 0% fragmented, since the computer is fairly new. i also have an antivirus, and i did a full scan and the computer was not infected. it hasn't caused any apparent performance issues. please help me, this sound is driving me crazy, i cant concentrate and do my work because of it.

The type of sound you describe sounds way more like the cooling fan than the hard drive. Hard drive noise is not constant...it is usually clicky like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle ridden fairly slowly and stopping and starting as the hard drive is accessed. There is a built in hard drive checker in the BIOS...hit F10 as you boot up and loo for the hard drive test in the menus. Run the full length one and see if you get errors.

  • My hard drive is broken....... now what do I do?

I was using my Macbook pro the other day and it started making a terrible noise which sounded like the hard drive arm beating the life our of my hard disk. I shut the computer down and now when I crank it up it just has a blue screen and the horrible noise of the hard disk. No brainier, something is wrong with the hard drive, but here's my question... I live in Savannah Georgia, or as I've seen from the support maps, the black hole of apple support. The only certified service center is an AIS computers store that I've heard nothing but horror stories about, it's even on youtube a guy rants against that store so now I don't know what to do. I don't want to give them my computer so fear that i might get it back 5 months from now still broken. I have the extended warranty but I don't know what to do and where to send it?? I need my computer back, please help!!!!!

Since you hard drive is broken, there is two things you can do. The first is call Applecare and see if you can send it in to have it repaired. They send you a box to ship it in, and it is actually a very simple process, the only problem is that it could be lengthy due to what nature the problem is. The second thing you can do, is look on craig's list and see if there is someone in your local area that you can contact and have him repair the computer for you then and there. I have done that with several things and it worked well. I have never done it with a mac because I live in NJ and there are many stores in the area that service them. You could try that too.
The other option is if your mac is old, buy a new one.

  • I am replacing my existing SATA hard drive to a Solid State hard drive and want to image the drive, is this possible?

I am replacing my existing 320 GB SATA hard drive that clicks and makes weird noises to a Solid State hard drive and want to image the drive, is this possible?  I then want to replace the DVD with a secondary large drive for storage.
So I am looking for any "gotchas" that I may be unaware of.
    Thanks!

Put the Old drive in an external notebook drive enclosure. Install the SSD in your computer. Boot from your Old drive's Recovery HD:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the New SSD. Source means the external Old hard drive.
Set the new Startup Disk to the SSD and restart the computer.
This process clones both your old OS X volume and the Recovery HD volume to the SSD. You can use a similar process to clone the SSD to the new hard drive you will install.

  • Install new hard drive HELP !!!

Hello, I just install a new 500gb hard drive into my uni mb replacing my 160gb. I have nothing really important to save from my previous hard drive. I am starting from scratch. After installing the new hard drive and inserting the disc 1 and press 'c'. Follow the screen instruction but only get to step 3 where screen ask ' SELECT A DESTINATION'. I have waited for 30 mins and all i see was the same screen. I am unable to click on options and continue cos they were greyed out. The only button that is nor grey is the 'go back'.
I am eagerly trying to get this new hard drive installed. What should i do next. Have tried the restart and all i am able to continue is until the Select a destination page.
Hope to get a good advice from here and .......
Thanking you in advance for all help and assistance.

Finally get the new hard drive installed from sratched. Once again many thanks to ypw. Once i clear the 'select a destination' step, the rest comes easy even for a novice like me.
Just for those who are curious to know the model of the hard drive that I installed. It is Hitachi 5K500 B-500. Choose this over the more popular WD Scorpion blue that most people are using.

  • Hard Drive Upgrade for G5

    Hi,
I am posting a new topic about G5 Hard Drives. Basically I am looking to upgrade my 120GB Seagate HD inside of my Power Mac G5. I am upgrading for two primary reasons. First, I need more storage, and second the hard drive I am using is unnaturally loud. I realized this weekend how loud it really was when I was using my friend's new iMac. Not once did I hear the drive in the iMac. It is hard to concentrate at times using my G5. So basically I am asking for advice that anyone can give me regarding SATA hard drives for a G5? Is there something I can do to reduce the amount of noise coming from my current hard drive? And is there a specific brand of hard drive that I should look into buying, or are all modern hard drives whisper quiet?
    Thanks,
    Tyler

    Hi-
The Seagates were always the quietest drives on the market. But, the Western Digital Green Power 750gb drive is currently rated as the quietest drive by SilentPC Review. I have found their advice invaluable for upgrade choices that I have made in the past.
As well, the WD GP 750gb drive is a top rated drive by Storage Reviews, and has been reported very favorably by G5 users within these forums. There is also a 1tb version.
As for your current noisy drive- if the sound is metal on metal, that can't be good, though the drive would already be in failure if such occurred. The seek sound, the head actuator movement, is probably what you are hearing. "Creaking" is a good word to describe head actuator movement sounds. Mounting methods can have an effect on the acoustics. If a mount is loose, a sound can be accentuated.
Check your current drive with Disk Utility. Insure that S.M.A.R.T. status is still supported and make sure DU can verify the disk.

  • Hard drivers, external hard drives

    Good afternoon!
I have FCP scratch disk set for my external hard drives but when I go into "documents" on my internal hard drive there is a folder called Final Cut Pro and there are files saved there.
    Is this suppose to be?
    Thanks

Yes. Project files don't contain the media... Media files and Render files (which are media files as well) are what should be kept on the external, and project files should be kept in that documents folder.
