Intermittent sound problems (circle with slash) since 10.9.1 upgrade.

My 27" iMac (mid-2011, 2.7 i5, 16g RAM) has had intermittent sound problems (circle with slash) since I upgraded to 10.9.1.  I've reset the PRAM, used Disk Utility on the file permissions, tried Audio Midi, and sound prefs steadfastly refuses to use the internal speakers.

Did you install the latest driver set for the device?  there is a new release on motu.com for mavericks.

  • Start up problem:  Circle with slash sign in it

    Hi,
Just recently had this problem. Before this happened, I have installed the 3 updates from apple, uninstalled my Norton Anti Virus program and installed the Intego Virus Barrier, Net Barrier and File Guard X5. Just discovered this problem when after installing the Intego Software, I was instructed to restart the computer to complete the installation and then, the circle and slash sign appeared. So what I currently do to access my laptop is to start up using the safe mode, shutting down and starting up again as this process lets me complete the logging procedures and avoids the circle/slash signs. But after I shut down, the circle and slash sign would appear again on the normal start up procedures.
Any ideas on this? Help is most appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
It was the Norton Software which has not uninstalled all of its hidden components. Already did the full installation. For anyone having this problem, see the full link of the thread below on how to uninstall the Norton Anti Virus.
Hope this solves your problem too!

  • Getting circle with slash at startup...

My computer started to get really slow one night so I decided to restart it, but then I ended up with the circle with slash error and couldn't now can't get past it.  Here is what I have tried so far:   Reset PRAM.   Tried to "repair disc" using disc utilities, eneded up with an error (sorry, dont remember what the error was!).   Had planned on re-installing the OS by erasing the hard drive, ended up with the follwing error "Disc erase failed.  POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed.  No such file or directory"   Starting to think replacing the hard drive might be the easiest option, unless anyone knows what's going on??  Thanks!

((((((Were you doing this from the the DVD because that's the way to do it.))))))
    Yes.
((((By now it sounds like you have written off the existing OS and want to reinstall it again. What problem are you having trying to do this?
Will it restart and allow you to boot into the DVD for you to reinstall?)))
Yep, it will allow me to boot from the dvd.   I everything backed up on an external drive using time machine.   When I tried to "restore system from back up" under "utilities" after inserting the DVD, there is a section where you select the disc where you want to restore your system to and my main hard drive isn't even showing up in the list...

  • Couldn't get to the login scrn. Circle with slash symbol. S-mode not helpin

System: *PowerMac G4 DDR 1GHz with 1.25GB RAM and Tiger 10.4.10 (or .11 not sure)*
At first, I could not get the Mac to get to the login screen i.e. it boots up but the timer symbol thing (you know that clockwise 'loading' icon thingy) keeps cycling for hours (eventually I switched it off not to waste electricity).
Tried second time using OS X install disk and check + repair disk, then boot up - still the same symptoms. (NB. Looks like I can do the fresh install though but that is not my intention just now).
Then, did the reset PRAM thing (cmdalt+PR), second chime - folder/question mark (no startup disk screen), then it shows the circle with slash icon on screen, eventually shut it down.
In single user mode, it stops after the 'got bootdisk...' and no flashing of the keyboard cursor.
In verbose mode, almost the same as above.
+Have not changed the PRAM battery or reset PMU. Have been off the grid (off at socket for quite a long period but does not normally do this).+
+In single user mode, one of the line says clock is wrong or reset. After PRAM reset, one line says PMU was reset.+
    My questions are:
    1. What is that circle with slash icon mean? (can only find on Intel Mac pages - could not load boot.efi, or some other issue)
    - ref: <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2674>
    2. Is installing a new system folder the only solution?
    3. Do I need to get a new battery?
    4. Is my startup hard disk at fault?
    Thanks.
    dean

    Hi Dean,
Have been off the grid (off at socket for quite a long period but does not normally do this).
I'm pretty sure the battery is extremely dead if the computer has been off the grid. Remove the PRAM battery and see if it starts. A new battery is always a good place to begin. We've seen plenty of posters here say their MDD startup problems cleared up with the installation ofa new battery. I get my batteries here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
I don't know your geographic location; if you are not in an area served by the above reseller, you can use the specs in that link to shop locally. Bottom line--you need to eliminate the battery as a suspect before proceeding with troubleshooting.
If a battery is over a year old I don't bother testing it. I've had too many PRAM batteries test 3.6V in my hand yet did not perform well enough under load to propelr work in teh computer.
Another easy thing to try is a Safe Boot. Info here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Be sure to give the computer time to get to a desktop--takes longer is safe mode.

  • Cannot start up, get Grey circle with slash through it

My 12" gets hung up at grey start up screen, i have tried to reboot from 10.3 disk and holding option key, the screen then goes to a "not allowed" grey circle with slash through it. No clue what to do. HELP
    thank you peter

    Hello Again peter,
    As I asked HERE,
Why are you using the "10.3 disk", and not the Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD?
As the computer specs, in your Above Post, re displayed as: G4 PowerBook 12" Mac OS X (10.4.4).
Here's an additional KB Article You see a blank, gray screen, to review.

  • Anyone else having problems with popups since the new security upgrade? can't get rid of them

anyone else having problems with popups since the new security upgrade? can't get rid of them

You may have inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it. It ought not to be related to any Apple security update.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.

  • After an firefox auto-update, there is a circle with slash over the icon (do not) and it will not launch.

Firefox was doing one of its automatic updates and it never finished but a circle with a slash through it appeared on the icon and now Firefox won't launch. It gives the following error message:
"The application "Firefox" cannot be launched. -10661"
I've tried re-downloading Firefox but when I get to the window where you move the Firefox icon to the folder it still shows that it has the circle with slash through it. It will start downloading then stop.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • Circle with Slash thru on startup

First time I have seen this symbol. Seems to have happened after waking my mini from sleep to find a pop up message that the iTunes movie rental I had downloaded had expired and was going to be removed from my iTunes Library. After hitting OK, I got crazy spinning rainbows, so I did a forced shutdown using the power button. Upon restart, I now get the grey Apple logo followed by the Circle with Slash icon. What now?

Try booting from another Mac via firewire target disc mode or booting from you original CDs and see if your harddrive checks out ok in Disk Utility

  • Circle with slash/won't recognize DVD or external drives

    I have this model:

It often fails to boot with the circle with slash. Tried safe boot (works), tried booting from optical drive with original system disc (won't recognize or eject-tried all of the eject techniques), and ran disk repair in target mode (found nothig wrong). Can't run hardware check for obvious reasons. It does not see external drives connected to FW or USB ports.I am starting to suspect a bad logic board. Any thoughts?

I can no longer startup from a CD/DVD
Be sure you're inserting the DVD that came with your Mac Pro. If you are trying to boot from other optical media be sure it is compatible with Intel Macs and specifically the Mac Pro. You are probably trying to boot off a discs that does not have a suitable OS on it.
or my external FW drive which has 10.4.8 also installed on it (pre-intel)
Same goes here. Your FireWire drive does not have a suitable OS installed in it. You need to install an Intel version of Mac OS X. Additionally you will probably need to repartition your drive using the GUID Partition Table. Until you do both of these Startup Disk will not let you select it.

Gray Screen with white circle with slash thru?  Will not boot up!  What can I do?
    Please help!
    Noel

The circle with slash means it cannot boot from the drive it thinks it's supposed to boot from.
Hold the Option/alt key at bootup, what shows as boot choices?
Will it boot from your OSX Install Disc?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Start up problems, get the circle with slash symbol then hangs forever

I did a bad thing, I downloaded some software from the Internet. It was from Smith Micro. After the first re-start after installing, I had start-up problems with the "not allowed symbol" (a circle with a slash through it) coming after the Apple symbol then hanging forever.
The Smith-Micro programs I down loaded were Spring Clean-up and Internet Clean-up. I have not used either program, just installed them.
I have run Disk Utilities from my start-up disk, everything tested out perfectly. Tried a Safe Boot, computer started up but I couldn't do anything (useless for me). Tried to Zap P-RAM, didn't work. Tried booting in target mode, got a weird symbol ( can't even explain this one) and it just hung there. Unconditional reboot works, and I can use the computer like normal. Does the unconditional boot mess anything up. Should I use it from now on?
I used the included uninstaller for both Spring Cleaning and Internet Clean-up, the computer still won't start-up normally.

There's hardly any circumstance that requires the so-called "clean" install; it's a windoze-centric thing. Just reinstall, ensure that fixed the issue, then run Software Update. Snow Leopard's installer only replaces the OS components and basic Apple apps, such as TextEdit, Mail, Safari, Terminal, and Calculator, leaving *everything else* in place. In the future, always make a restorable backup before installing new stuff.

  • Had to reinstall iTunes after bad virus and now when I drag and drop song into custom playlist it won't added.  No green   appears, instead just the circle with slash.  What's going on?  a fix? Michael

I had to reformat after a bad virus and reinstall iTunes.  Now when I try to drag and drop a song into a custom playlist, it won't add the song.  Instead of the green + that is supposed to appear, it just shows the circle with cross slash.  I created numerous playlist before and never ran into this problem.  Any suggestions on how to fix it?  Thanks 1ngiri

OK, so I have now found that this is apparently normal for iTunes, to only accept mpeg 4 movie files, all the searching I did before I must have worded it wrong because I couldn't find anything about this, incredibly. Had been looking for why iTunes won't take all the files it previously did, like if it had been changed, and it hasn't, it's allegedly always taken only mpeg 4 files. Also I had been searching for why iTunes crashes every time I try and add/import anything but mpeg 4 files, and even sometimes with mpeg 4 files. That isn't normal, it's supposed to just do nothing apparently as I've just found out. So for these reasons I didn't find the answer despite my searching all over the web.
So I guess that answers my own question now, but I'm still perplexed as to why I absolutely, definitely, without any doubt, had several hundred movies of a few different video file types loaded, accessible and playable in my iTunes library that everything here claims iTunes never accepted. It apparently shouldn't have been possible for me to have done this, but for probably 10 years it's been this way.
Perhaps since I don't remember adding these files to iTunes anymore recently than maybe 6 or 7 years ago, the iTunes back then did accept all kinds of file types? Or could I have somehow had some video codecs or software that expanded the capability of my movie players like Quicktime Player that unwittingly also allowed iTunes to take those files as well? All I know is somehow it worked! So now my question is how did I have it working before, so that maybe I can make it work again.
