Intermittent Trackpad on 15" MBP (after 10.6.4 update?)

This is either a hardware fault on my machine -- a June 2009 15" MBP -- or something connected to the 10.6.4 update (or the magic trackpad update that brought inertial scrolling to the last few MB/MBP refreshes).
Short version: when tapping to click -- like on a bookmark in the bookmarks bar in Firefox or Safari -- something strange happens. The tap is recognized, but the link isn't actually "clicked". The background of the link changes to a darker shade like it does when you click on it, and it stays that way as long as the cursor is hovering over it, but the browser doesn't actually go to that URL.
The bookmarks bit is just an example; the same click-but-not-click happens on links and buttons from time to time. Kind of a pain in the ***.
I don't remember this happening before 10.6.4, but I could be mistaken. I notice it more often with tap-to-click (possibly sampling bias... I tap to click more often than I physically click anyway).
Not using any third-party trackpad utilities.
Anyone else notice such a thing?

Well, so far things seem better, although I'm not sure if the word 'fixed' can be used just yet. I've been using my macbook pro i5 (2010) for about 10 hours and had no problems with the trackpad since the 10.6.5 update until just a few minutes ago when the cursor jumped and right-clicked all by itself as it would do since that unfortunate trackpad update which was causing so many problems. I've just now turned off the one-finger dragging to see that will help, but have kept the one-finger tap and right click. I'll see if things settle down or go back to trackpad craziness again . . .

  • Wifi Working OK, MBP after 10.4.8 update SLOW!

    Hi all!
Right after I upgraded to 10.4.8 the Airport connectiom on my MBP is really slow. I used to get 700kbps speeds, but know i´m at 45kbps!!!
I tried the "delete preferences" tip found on these boards, but it did not work in my user account.
I then created a new user account, and Airport connected at full speed. It has to be some software issue, so i tried to delete all prefs I could find in my original account regarding Airport or network, but it still hasn´t improve.
I must say i have never had any issues with Airport on my MBP, it has always worked flawlessy until right after the update.
    Any ideas??? thank you.

two ideas that have already been mentioned:
    - do you use coconut wifi? quit it / delete it al a startup item (preferences -> user -> select yourself -> startup items (that's how it might be called in English^^)
    - try switching the router's channel (might be helpfull to use a cable-conncetion while doing that): load your router's setuppage (usually the component's name such as fritz.box or (in my case) ssx553, or try your IP and replace the final digit with a 1) than go to wifi, channels. Switching it to "auto" helped in my case, a friend of mine had good experiences with channel 11.
Hope this will help (I am NO computer expert and pretty new to the mac^^)

  • Trackpad physical click broken after 10.8.5 update

Yesterday, I did the suggested 10.8.5 update on my one year old MacBook Pro Retina. Since the update, the physical click-action of my trackpad no longer works. I saw similar problems reported here before, but an OS-update can't thicken the battery? The battery reports no issues and works well as ever. I am far from any Apple store with Genius bar or Apple dealer, so what could I try to get the trackpad working again?
    Thanks!

  • Canon camera no longer connects to Macbook Pro after 10.4.7 update

Has anybody gotten word from Apple on this issue yet? My Rebel XT/350D stopped connecting to my MBP after the latest software update. It has stopped working with iPhoto, Image Capture and Capture ONE. If I put the CF card in a USB reader, it is recognized (occasionally) as a removable disk.
    What gives?

    CZ:
Did you update the system via the Software Update? If so then download the 10.4.7 COMBO updater and run it. There are some files it's reported, that are left off the incremental updater and the combo one will fix some of the problems that causes. Not sure your problem is one of them but it's work a try. Don't forget to repair disk permissions afterward.

  • Magic Mouse not connecting to MBP after Sleep or Re-start

This has been an on going problem for me since I upgraded to OSX 10.8 on my MBP.  Since the upgrade my Magic Mouse will no longer connect to my MBP after it has gone to sleep, restarted or shut down.  The only way I have been able to get a connection is to Click on the BT icon goto the mouse>Open  Preferances.  At this point the computer is 'Waiting for a Bluetooth mouse to be discovered' and it will keep searching forever.  Clicking on the mouse button or moving the mouse around does not do anything even though the green light on the bottom of the mouse indicates it is on & attempting communication.  I have to turn the mouse off for 3-5 seconds and then turn the mouse back on.  This is the only way for the computer to see the mouse, I then click connect the mouse connects and all is good until the computer sleeps, gets restarted or shut down.
I have tried resetting the PRAM & SMC.  I have also deleted the mouse from bluetooth preferances and re-paired it with the computer several times.  I even tried deleting the PList and re-pairing but nothing yet has worked!
Open to any and all suggests! PLEASE help!

    Hi,
I have a mid 2014 15 inch MacBook Pro and I'm experiencing now the same issue. I have an iPad and an iMac and the issue is only with the MacBook Pro.
I went to System Preferences > Network > Wi - Fi and selected 'Ask to join new networks'. It didn't remove completely the issue (is still not finding the network) but at least I don't have to turn the wifi on and off all the time because after a while is able to connect.

  • I have a MBP running 10.6.8 and after the recent iOS update I have not been able to sync my devices. I was able to sync an ipod, but not iphone or ipad. iTunes recognizes my devices, but sync button stays grayed.

I have a older MBP running 10.6.8 and after the recent iOS update I have not been able to sync my devices. I was able to sync an ipod, but not iphone or ipad. iTunes recognizes my devices, but sync button stays grayed. I've changed my USB hub, reinstalled iTunes and run disc cleanup. No luck.

You said that your computer will sync other iPods? Are they iPod touches? Other iPod use different drivers the the touch And iPhone and iPad).
    You can try:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
Does it charge? Does the iPod work?
I would try on another computer.
Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If defective and not abused you will walk out with a replacement

  • Trackpad no longer drags after Security Update 2015-003

I am running Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacPro 2010. After I installed Security Update 2015-003, I noticed my Apple Trackpad can no longer drag. Here are the symptoms:
I CAN move the cursor around the screen using the trackpad.
I CAN click, and appropriate responses occur.
If I click on a menu in the menu bar, then move (hovering) the cursor with the trackpad down the list of menu choices, they DO NOT highlight. I can click on one, and it WILL BE performed, but a submenu would NOT pop out. I CANNOT drag down the menu and to the side to bring out a submenu using the trackpad.
I CANNOT move a window or other object by tap-dragging on trackpad (double tap, holding the second tap to turn it into a drag)
I CANNOT select a phrase or paragraph by highlighting it by tap-dragging on trackpad
Hover behaviors on web pages DO NOT occur (so links that should highlight, menus on a web page that would normally drop down on their own, do not do so) if cursor is moved by trackpad.
Tool tips or other hover behaviors in web pages or outside of web browser DO NOT occur if cursor is moved by trackpad.
All behaviors are NORMAL if I use my Wacom tablet stylus to perform the same cursor move.
So, if I move the cursor over something using the trackpad, nothing happens. If I then move the cursor over the same thing using the Wacom stylus, highlighting or other hover behavior occurs.
Yes, I've changed the batteries in my trackpad, and it works fine otherwise. It does NOT skip or exhibit symptoms of a poor connection. Three-finger and four-finger drags to go to Previous Page in Safari, or switch desktops, DO work.
    Only single-finger dragging is gone.
This issue occurs on my 2010 MacPro running 10.10.2, but does not occur on my 2009 MacPro running 10.10.2 at work.
Both have the Security Update 2015-003 installed, as well as all other current AppStore updates.
So Security Update 2015-003 would not seem to be the issue, but that was the thing which changed on my OS immediately prior to the beginning of the undesired behavior.
There is no setting in the Trackpad control panel that has to do with single-finger dragging. I've also checked the Mouse control panel and the double-click speed is the same between the two computers (the one where Trackpad drag works, the other where Trackpad does not work).

    SOLVED:
This issue went away by itself after a reboot for a software installation.

  • Why does my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro's trackpad become extremely unresponsive after I plug in a USB mouse? The only trackpad command that works is the left click, I can't select text or press down and hold the trackpad to do anything else until I restart.

My trackpad becomes REALLY unresponsive after I plug in a USB mouse. It seems like the cursor is broken and stuck on a permanent left click or something. I'm unable to select text or do any other sort of action that requires you to hold down the trackpad and drag. Mouse icons don't update as I scroll over different text and links. The trackpad is usually stuck in this unresponsive state until I restart my macbook which is extremely inconvenient if I have to do this after every time I use a USB mouse. Are there any fixes to this?

    Melophage,
I don't leave it outside. Usually when I leave it overnight, I do so under the same conditions as when I leave it plugged in, and this morning I only left it for about an hour in my house and it did the same thing.
    LowLuster,
I actually have a new hard drive I bought a while back and have been meaning to switch it out with the one that's in there now. I'll follow your instruction, then make the switch I had planned on and report back.

  • Trackpad Gestures stop working after screen sleep on OS 10.9.2 update

Trackpad Gestures stop working after screen sleep after OS 10.9.2 update.  Anybody know why?  Is there a process I can stop or reboot in the Activity monitor to refresh this?  These gestures include launch pad, mission control and full screen swipes.  Annoying.

Same problem same version. On a MB Air. I have every gesture turned on. When this happens I have same problem on Magic Trackpad and my MB Trackpad. If I quit the app part of the gestures come back but then stop again. The worst is scrolling. This one is a show stopper and always require quit and relaunch.

  • Trackpad not working after 10.8.4 update

Macbook Pro with Retina Display late 2012. Trackpad clicking function stopped working after 10.8.4 update. Any advice? I've tried zapping the pram, resetting the smc. Nothing helps.

Apple store genius bar appointment is the best option for a positive resolution.
    Ciao.

  • MBP shutdown after 10.6.2 update is slower than before!

    Hello all,
Since after 10.6.2 update, my MBP shutdown time extended from less than 5 secs to over 25 secs. I've gone through some solutions including resetting disk permissions using disk utility, setting the PRAM, using font explorer to clear fonts as suggested by a user that got his problem solved. No luck at the moment. Prior to 10.6.2 update my MBP used to shutdown in less than 5 secs. Although i bought a new usb modem called ZTE usb Modem (Model: K3565-Z) from my cellphone carrier Vodacom in South Africa. I mention this because on my Mac Mini, whenever i want to shutdown, i have to force quite this application before the Mac Mini (which is also running 10.6.2 update) shuts down fine under 5 secs. So am guessing the usb modem is the cause of the problem somehow but I can't find out how. If not then it must be with the 10.6.2 update.
    Any help will be appreciated.

1.) Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
Failing that, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.
2.) Did you update via Software Update or did you download the combo? If you used Software Update, get the Combo updater instead and re-apply:

  • Macbook Pro trackpad partly stops working after 1 touch

I have a very strange problem with the trackpad on my macbook pro (late 2008, fully updated, SSD, 4Gb).
When a mouse is used all is fine. WHen I touch the trackpad ONCE, it will stop working correctly, it will:
    - not detect a single click
    - will detect a doucle click
    - mouse moving (one or two fingers) no problem
IF the SMC is reset (unplug/remove battery/hold power button 5 sec/put battery back/ plug in power/start up)
all is ok, BUT after 1 time use the trackpad the same appears.....
    I have sofar tried:
    - SMC (described)
    - PRAM reset
    - disk utility (recover/fault detect)
    - restore from time machine
    - Yasu
nothing new is configured, the only thing i can imagine is that I moved the mac, while it was running, from its place and walked away from the place were the connected bluetooth mouse was located.....
    anyone any clue?

    Tx Ogelthorp,
But this did not work; one strange observation:
While not touching the trackpad from start after reset it works with a seperate mouse as it should.
Then one touch on the trackpad and it is ignoring the single click BUT SO IS THE MOUSE?
so no hardware fault I guess as it is exactly repeatable...
    any other ideas?
    gr/d

  • Magic Mouse, Trackpad, Bluetooth not working after Mountain Lion install

Is anyone else having the same issue after installing ML? I first noticed that my Magic Mouse didn't scroll as usual when I opened Safari.  When I went to preferences, it only gave me tracking & double-click speed options- no scrolling options.  I check the Accessibility preferences, but that didn't seem to help either.  When I tried my Trackpad to check the preferences, it said that one wasn't connected, even though that's exactly what I used to open it in the first place.  Now when I look at the top right hand corner for Bluetooth connectivity- it says Bluetooth- not available in a grayed out font. When I check out the About My Mac and check the Hardware->Bluetooth section it says 'No information found'.
I've tried the SMC/PRAM reset, unclicked "Disable automatic login" option in Security & Privacy preference page.  Shut down my iMac and turned off the keyboard, mouce, and trackpad and restarted them after restarting the iMac.
Now I can seem to find anything else to try.
Does anyone have anything else to try?

    Hi There,
I am having the same issues - is there a fix for it yet?

  • My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd.

My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd. Earlier I thought this behavior is due to spotlight indexing but it finished after 3 days. I deleted all caches from library. But no luck, still running extremely slow. I checked activity monitor for cpu usage, it shows above 90% is idle. The memory usage always shows PM - 4 GB, Memory Used 3.96 GB, VM - 4 GB, Swaped used 0 bytes, App Memory 1.82 GB, File Cache 1.44 GB, Wired Memory 480 MB.
    Thanks in adavnce for help.

Was it the combo updater that was installed or the OS X 10.9.3 update. There is a difference.
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.
