Intermittent trackpad tapping problem

Macbook Air 2.16; 10.6.4
Often my Air trackpad doesn't respond to single and double tapping. At first I thought it was less sensitive to tapping when you tapped nearer to its edge, but that doesn't seem to be true. Sometimes I have to tap 4,5,6 times before it works. Any ideas as to cause and/or cure?

I would reset the SMC and PRAM to see if it solve the issue. Worst come to worst, reintalling the OS can also help. But before you do something that drastic, open a test account on your computer and see if the issue appears in the other account. If it does, then it's likely a hardware issue and a visit to the Apple Store would be a good idea. If the issue can't be replicated in the test account then it's mostly software and a reinstall of the OS would do the trick if you can't find the cause of the issue. Backup everything of course.

    Hi Rhondavas77,
    To enable/disable Just-In-Time debugging
On the Tools menu, click Options.
In the Options dialog box, select the Debugging folder.
In the Debugging folder, select the Just-In-Time page.
In the Enable Just-In-Time debugging of these types of code box, select or clear the relevant program types:
    Managed, Native, or Script.
To disable Just-In-Time debugging, once it has been enabled, you must be running with Administrator privileges. Enabling Just-In-Time debugging sets a registry key, and Administrator privileges are required to change that key.
    Click OK.

  • Macbook Pro trackpad taps but doesn't click.

I have a 2009 macbook pro and the trackpad taps but doesn't click. I was wondering if something can be done to fix it so the click works again without taking it in to get fixed? I am currently using a wireless mouse, which is okay but just gets annoying to use sometimes. But if anyone knows of any tricks that might make the click on the trackpad work, that would awesome!

  • Trackpad + Typing Problem

Recently my Macbook has begun acting up a little bit. At random times when I'm dragging the cursor across the screen, it will start highlighting text, clicking buttons, opening things from the dock, etc. Without even clicking the trackpad button, it seems to be activated, and held down. It makes it very difficult to browse the internet, use iTunes, etc., because it will randomly just start clicking and moving songs, opening links, messing up Mail, etc.
Furthermore, there seems to be a somewhat related problem with typing. When this trackpad/clicking problem seems to be occuring, it also becomes very difficult to type. Typing seems to work just fine initially, but then all of a sudden the text I'm typing won't show up on the line. The cursor blinks, and then jumps to a random line of text, highlights a few words, and then pauses. If I continue typing, it either erases the text that was selected, or just keeps typing and adding characters to the middle of a word or sentence I've already typed.
Something definitely seems to be glitching. Occasionally I'm able to 'reset' the problem by moving the cursor to the desktop and firmly clicking on the trackpad 3-5 times. That will stop things from randomly highlighting and usually get the text to work again. It seems to be a problem mostly when I'm using Adium to talk to people, or just after I've typed for a few paragraphs (it's starting to act up right now, actually).
Should I call Apple, or does anyone have any suggestions for fixing the problem with Software, etc.? I don't want it to progress any further, but as a college student, I'm going to be doing a lot of typing and need it fixed.
    Thanks.

Have you tried resetting your Power Management Unit?
Turn your Mac off, and remove the battery. Hold the power button down for about five to ten seconds. Pop the battery back in, and restart your computer.
I had this issue, and it went away right after I did this.

  • Trackpad Tap and Click problem (won't click sometimes)

    Hello,
    I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2012 (MD104)
I had this problem since the beginning (i'm a new mac user for almost 7 months now), i'm really getting tired of this
sometimes (maybe 5-10 times a day) when i tap to click (or even really click with trackpad) it does not work (trackpad is fine , this is a software problem because i have also Windows on my mac and its fine there)
for example it happens when im clicking the Close button to close a window
then "i have to click elsewhere, any where, and then it will click just fine where it didn't work before"
I have Tap to click and Three Finger drag enabled (maybe it is related)
i searched a lot and did many things, neither of them worked
What should i do? any help is appreciated

See if deleting the System Preferences plist solves the problem:

  • Trackpad - tap to click gets reset on laptop restart

I have set my trackpad setting to "tap to Click" but it gets reset every time I restart my macbook pro. Could you please help me overcome this problem!?

Tap to click has to be enabled separately in your Windows partition. I'm assuming you've installed all the Boot Camp drivers - in which case you need to navigate to the bottom right of your task bar and press the little arrow to reveal all of your background services. You should see the Boot Camp logo. Double click on it (or if that fails, right click on it and open the Preferences menu) and you should see some tabs such as 'Startup Disk', 'Keyboard' etc. Navigate to the one called 'Trackpad' and you should find a checkbox for the tap to click option.

  • Both trackpad tap and click are unresponsive on system suspend/resume (i.e. after closing and reopening the lid)

Hi all, it's a while that I noticed a strange behavior.
Every time I suspend the System by closing the lid, I'm not able, after resuming to use the trackapd correctly.
Actually, on resume, single tap and click seems like not working.
The only way to have them back on track is restarting the system.
    Any idea?

    fiveinchwrench:
I used an electronics cleaning wipe to clean the case after I shut down.
Did you sprey it on directly or did you spray it on a cloth and wipe the keyboard and trackpad? If you did, it may have penetrated to the contacts. Incidentally, all you need is a damp, lint-free cloth to clean your computer.
Could the wipe have killed the trackpad?
    Possibly.
Would it have damaged the logic board also?
If you sprayed a lot of stuff on, it may have penetrated to the logic board. However, if the computer was shut off, and you are still able to start it up, it should be okay.
If the only problem it the trackpad and clicker, you can try lifting the upper case and cleaning the contacts etc. If still not luck, you may need to purchase and install a replacement upper case.
Unless you feel comfortable getting under the hood and seeing if you need to clean up a bit, I suggest that you take it to the Apple Authorized repair and have them take a look.
    Good luck.

  • MacBook Pro Trackpad: Clicking problems

I have a MacBook Pro, (15 inch, Late 2008) and have always had fairly significant issues with the trackpad. It only registers clicks about half of the time. I have experimented with all the trackpad settings and "tap to click" also fails to register consistently. I usually have to press very hard, after the trackpad depresses for the click to register in the OS. I've continually experienced this problem in Leopard, Snow Leopard, and now Lion.
I've read that a lot of other people have had similiar issues with their trackpads over the last 3 years, but I've never heard about any fix or remedy. My trackpad does depress just fine, so I don't think that the trackpad screw would need to be adjusted at all. An external mouse registers clicks 100% of the time, so it isn't a software issue. I've heard that some people's ribbon that connects the trackpad could be loose, but I'm nervous to open it up and mess around with it.
I click with the side of my thumb--as most other people do. However clicking with my index finger also fails to register clicks, so I don't think it is a "accidental input" issue or a multitouch issue.
My girlfriend has the exact same model of Macbook Pro. Same year, same season, exact same specs. Her trackpad works perfectly.
I brought the computer to a Genius Bar, and the "Genius" said that it was just fine and somehow magically got it to register his clicks. I think maybe he had a sercret Magic Mouse under the table. I left bewildered and defeated.
Maybe I should just navigate via keyboard...

Don't worry about what the 'Genius' had to say most are just Apple grunts, slugging it out in the trenches.
If you are out of warranty / AppleCare then I would suggest finding an authorized independent Apple repair company. Go there, get a ridiculous quote (most likely) then ask around and find a local computer repair shop. Any place with "Apple Authorized" is basically like dealing with Apple.
You could also ask another 'Genius' or a 'Super Genius' (ie Manager.)
I promise you are not alone.
I have killed keyboards and trackpads with the following:
    - A glass of Merlot.
    - A glass of water
    - Another glass of water
    - A dog, knocking the laptop off the couch and to the floor.
I could continue, but seriously. Don't get up. The other option is to get a bluetooth mouse. Personally I love mine.

  • Intermittent Trackpad on 15" MBP (after 10.6.4 update?)

This is either a hardware fault on my machine -- a June 2009 15" MBP -- or something connected to the 10.6.4 update (or the magic trackpad update that brought inertial scrolling to the last few MB/MBP refreshes).
Short version: when tapping to click -- like on a bookmark in the bookmarks bar in Firefox or Safari -- something strange happens. The tap is recognized, but the link isn't actually "clicked". The background of the link changes to a darker shade like it does when you click on it, and it stays that way as long as the cursor is hovering over it, but the browser doesn't actually go to that URL.
The bookmarks bit is just an example; the same click-but-not-click happens on links and buttons from time to time. Kind of a pain in the ***.
I don't remember this happening before 10.6.4, but I could be mistaken. I notice it more often with tap-to-click (possibly sampling bias... I tap to click more often than I physically click anyway).
Not using any third-party trackpad utilities.
Anyone else notice such a thing?

Well, so far things seem better, although I'm not sure if the word 'fixed' can be used just yet. I've been using my macbook pro i5 (2010) for about 10 hours and had no problems with the trackpad since the 10.6.5 update until just a few minutes ago when the cursor jumped and right-clicked all by itself as it would do since that unfortunate trackpad update which was causing so many problems. I've just now turned off the one-finger dragging to see that will help, but have kept the one-finger tap and right click. I'll see if things settle down or go back to trackpad craziness again . . .

  • Trackpad Tap to Click

I am having issues with my Trackpad. Several times, the tap to click function turns itself off and I have to connect a mouse to navigate to turn the function back on. It happens often if I restart the computer. Any ideas?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    mv L*/P*/.GlobalPreferences.plist Desktop/GlobalPreferences.plist
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). A file named "GlobalPreferences.plist" will appear on the Desktop.
Log out and log back in. Test. If the problem is resolved, you'll need to recreate some of your settings in System Preferences. You can then delete the file on the Desktop. Otherwise post your results.

  • Intermittant trackpad failure

This is getting a tad bit annoying. I thought that the fixes issued by apple, in regards to the software controller for the trackpad, would fix the intermittant failures, but they haven't. I went to the apple store with an appointment for them to take a look at it... but the tech knew less about apples that I do. The only way he said they can fix it is if I'm willing to be without my computer for 2 weeks. As frustrating as this is, being without the computer for 2 weeks is far worse. Any suggestions?
I know [from previous powerbooks I've owned] that the trackpad is less responsive when the computer is running nice and toasty, but this is not occuring only when the computer is too warm. It occurs more often when there is a period of inactivity, but is not limited to that. It will continue to be unresponsive unless I reset the trackpad by putting my hand across the entire pad.
Is this a hardware failure? Anyone have a workaround that will avoid me having to deal with apple support again?
PS: reason for not wanting to send the computer in, is past failures with repairs when the powerbook is sent in. I had to send in a previous model for repairs 5 times before they simply offered me a new computer [which is not this computer that is having the problem]. This process took over 2 months to complete.

I posted in a related topic about my wife's
PowerBook's trackpad issues. We were experiencing
extremely frustrating cursor freezes since 10.4.3.
I just upgraded her machine to 10.4.5 and have been
problem free for the past hour. We'll see how it
goes over the next few days...
Anyone else have a similar experience with the recent
    upgrade?
Nevermind... It's back, and in some cases worse than ever.
We had a rather embarassing situation occur at a coffee shop this morning. Someone noticed the PowerBook and was asking questions about Apple, Mac OSX, etc.
We were trying to show off some of the iLife features and the trackpad was extra-wacky... needless to say he was probably thinking "Nice computer, too bad you can't use it when you want to."
    Ugh.

  • Trackpad handwriting problem after upgrade to 10.7.4

    Hi,
After upgrade to OS X 10.7.4, I have problem on Chinese handwriting using trackpad on my MBA.
When I press Shift-control-space the handwriting window pop-up.
I am able to hand write and choose characters in the pop up window.
But, the result does not beibg carried back in the Finder or Safari, or even Word 2008.
    Please, Can any body help?
    Martin Sit

    It is just 10.7.4
People are handing out advice to use the terminal as root and clean up the 10.7.4 mess, and I would advise against EVER using terminal unless you are a UNIX Geek like me. There is a reason OSX is a GUI based Operating System - You should never have to use it like a Green Letters on Black Screen computer.... Although that is what we are using, just with pretty graphics and buttons to click instead of typing code and script...
    10.7.4 is a major fail.
I have never seen a release that has negatively affected every Apple User I know - From Mac Pro Intel V.1 to my December 2011 MBP, and everything in between.
No one should be trouble-shooting an OS that has so many random, bizzare, and fatal errors across dozens of systems?
    Did Sandboxing KILL the Mac?
Nothing you do will fix this - Apple needs to fix this. Like you, I have made the MBP usable, but other than that, any system message kills the MBP - first the display, then the HDD, then preferences, then finder....

  • In some applications trackpad taps do not click

This is Windows 7 x64 on a MacBook Air. I have set the Trackpad options in Boot Camp Control Panel to "Tap to Click" with one finger, and "Secondary Tap" (i.e. right-click) with two fingers.
This generally works fine, except that with some software clicks do not work. It's not a random thing, they do not work at all. Moving the mouse works, but taps don't do anything at all. I can "hard-click" (until the trackpad mechanically clicks), and that works as a left-click, but I can't tap to do the same, or tap with two fingers to right-click.
I tried different USB mice, and I can change their button settings in the Control Panel, and they all work fine with all applications. This trackpad instead doesn't seem to have the usual mouse drivers or options, and however it is implemented it doesn't always work (with some applications). I am posting this in the hope that someone from Apple might notice and escalate for a fix.
    Thanks!
    Mike

  • Intermittent JTable Selection Problem

    Hi,
Everyone once in a while, under NT with 1.4.x, I have problems selecting and highlighting row under JTable. It happens a good bit, but this does not happen all the time. When the table is buggy, it does not keep the row selected nor does it highlight the row. You may have the row selected on a mousedown, but once you release the mouse it's done.
Since this is happening for a variety of JTable's I didn't bother to send Java code. Has anyone else encountered this sort of thing? Or does anyone know what I should be looking at?
The intermittent part is what's killing me. It makes it hard to track down with any high degreee of confidence in the answers.
thanks for any input or suggestions,
