Intermittent USB Sound Output

I have an Al Macbook Running Leopard, 10.5.8. I just purchased a Monoprice Mini Displayport Male and USB Male Audio to HDMI Female Converting Adapter
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&pid=5969&seq=1&format=2
The goal is to output both video and sound from my computer to my audio receiver’s HDMI input then onto my TV and my surround sound speakers. The first time I set up my system I wasn’t getting any sound thru the USB to my receiver. I then plugged and unplugged the cables multiple times and got the sound to work. I didn’t change any settings in my Preference panel. Last night I hooked my computer back up to the cable and it didn’t output sound. Is there a sure fire method to ensure that my USB port is outputting sound to my HDMI adapter?
One other symptom, when I was getting sound out of my cables, I could close the lid of the computer and still get video and sound out. Last night, when I was using the cables and I tried to shut my lid, the computer went to sleep and I lost all video signals.

Hi, Ulyssesbob ,
welcome
first of all, i don't know about the adapter you are using. but here are a few remarks:
1) closing the lid of the MB means that is has to go to sleep. So the instance you quote, that it continued playing video and music, is not normal. it is normal to stop all activity when you close the lid of the MB.
2) when setting up new connections with sound (and video), the system needs a bit (few seconds) of time to recognize things. Once there are multiple output possibilities, the system can chose by itself the one you would like, but a priori, the MB doesn't know which one is the right one. You should check the Syst.Prefs and set it to the one you need. This also implies: if you disconnect, the MB might change the Syst. Prefs by its own decision, since it will not put output to an nonexisting device...
I would try to reset it up, slowly, and controlling every step you are doing by looking at the system prefs settings. Hope this works out. If you still have problems, or your MB behaves strangely, please report back.

  • Usb sound output with integrated 100W amplif

    Hi,
I would like to see a extensible USB audio device with integrated 00W amplifier. I should be able to connect for every room in my house such a device. The audi source schould not be fixed to one computer. I should be able to select different audio sources in a network environment.
    or
does something like that already exist ?

I saw a device the other day, and I can't remember the name unfortunately, that allows you place multiple wi-fi boxes in various rooms through the house. I believe the box also had an amp etc. You can then choose to play different music in the different rooms. Hopefully someone else can recognise it

  • I use Garageband 09 to record voice overs via podcasting, female narrator noisy, but keep getting an intermittent clicking sound. It's not the metronome. I have a good quality external USB mic plugged in. Any ideas?

I use GarageBand 09 to record voice overs via the Podcasting then Female Narrator Noisy utility. I have a good quality external mic plugged in. I keep getting an intermittent clicking sound on the audio track. It's not the metronome as that is turned off. I have to edit out the clicking after recording. I can see the spikes on the waveline. Any ideas how I can prevent this happening?

Hi again and thanks so much for replying.
The 'mic jack' on the old mic is both wide and large, measuring about an inch and a quarter from the base (where it comes out of the black encasing) to the edge of the tip (sort of cone shaped). As I can't plug this in directly to any port in the back of the Mac, I thought it might be possible to to buy some sort of adapter so that I could plug in the jack at one end, with a USB connector at the other end to go straight into the Mac. But I see from your comment that you are suggesting a smaller jack itself (i.e., large size jack to small size jack and then plug in to the small round port, instead of jack to USB port)?
At the Mac shop I bought a USB adapter to connect up a second monitor (screen). I've just dug out the package and it's called a mini display port to VGA adapter. But back to the mic issue, I don't want to use the old mic really, I'm just trying to eliminate whether or not my usual mic, or its USB cable, is at fault and causing the clicking.
I looked on Amazon for a suitable adapter but there was mention of these little gadgets having a sound card. As the Mac obviously has its own internal sound card, I couldn't see the point of another (exernal) one, unless it was actually required to convert the sound from input to output (playback) or something. One review said sound quality was lost but the person had a problem with his speakers, not a ticking sound while playing back recordings - which is obviously my problem.
I do have a headset that I used to use for Skype. It has a pink and a green jack. I could plug one into the "headphones symbol' port and try recording again with Garageband. At least the jack is the right size. Again, this is just for the purpose of eliminating whether my good mic on a stand with the anti-popping sheild is at fault.
While my Mac does have both inbuilt speakers (I don't need external ones) and an inbuilt microphone, the latter is not of a high enough quality for voice overs, hence buying an external mic etc. But whatever is causing the clicking or ticking is obviously affecting the quality of my recordings. As you can imagine, it is very time-consuming to edit out the ticking spikes and if the noise appears during speech, you can't edit it out at all.
Please keep the suggestions coming. I am determined to get to the bottom of this for my sake and everyone else who is suffering from the same problem!

  • Logitech USB headphones - microphone works but not sound output

Seems like the sound output to my Logitech USB headphone has stopped. The microphone inputs but the sound output is blocked. Could be technical issue with the set but was wondering of anyone else has this problem after the last update to 10.14.0

    ChickInVici,
Having similar issue with iPad 2.  No volume on Apps or Music (except when using headphones).  Just started happening after months of no issues.  Have reset/ restored with no solution.  Can you provide more detail with your solution?  I went to >settings>accessibility>voiceover.....but could not find headphones etc... what am I missing.  Could you be more specific on what you changed to resolve your issue.
    thanks

  • USB Sound Card: dual stereo output?

I recently bought a Channel Audio Sound Card Adapter which would channel sound through my computer's USB port. Pretty standard it would allow for Stereo headphone out and microphone input:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-Virtual-7-1-Channel-Audio-Sound-Card-Adapter-3 D-for-XP-Windows-7-Mac-/321480885369?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_SoundCar ds&hash=item4ad9c10479
I opted for it so I could control from my menu bar where the sound was being directed: http://www.cnet.com/uk/how-to/how-to-quickly-change-audio-output-in-os-x/
However I do not need the microphone in, but do need a second stereo headphone out and would like to know if:
    a) A USB adapter exists that will encompass two stereo headphone ports, not a microphone?
    b) Whether OS X will be able to distinguish the two so I can control which headphones are in use at any one time from a single USB Sound Card dongle? (note: I am not looking for a Y splitter)
I have read of some OS X software called "SoundSource" from RogueAmoeba, but this has been retired - it would allow for me to flip the microphone port so it would transmit sound, even through the microphone socket, I might have been able to get around it like that? Is there anything else that may be available that could do the job?
Also, I was wondering, if I had to get another USB Sound Card, could I use a USB splitter so that I could plug two USB spun cards into one port and with no loss of quality? USB ports are a premium on my computer.

  • USB (Mega stick), sound output and PS2 problems

    ==USB problem==
The MSI MEGA STICK do not work with the MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR.
When you plug it, its recognized, you can write on the MEGA STICK, delete files but cannot READ from MEGA STICK. It freezes while display "reading". I have tried on lots of PCs. Only my MSI motherboard do not work properly. The same problem with my 2 MEGA STICK. And i had tried Windows XP and Linux. Same problem. Others USB devices works fine. Even card readers...
    ==PS2==
My optical wireless mouse do not works properly. When i turns on the computer, it works ok. If i restart, do not work. Restart again, works. And go on... Only this mouse. Others MB works fine.
    ==Sound Output==
And also with my sound output. The eletrical one (coaxial).
It do not work with my 5.1 home system. It works fine with my old SB Live. It gets worse when i use my tv output from my Radeon 9100. It only works SOMETIMES when the tv output is not plugged in.
Thanks to all that could help me.

    Mega stick.
have you updated the firmware ?
No. It Freezes before being able to update. Also the update do not tell about solving this problem
    "Firmware version: 2.05
    Update items
    1. Improve delete MP3 and voice files function.
    2. Fix device will restart while forward/backward Voice file."
you do know that windows xp does not come with usb2 drivers.
sp1 does and you have to install them yourself.
go to device manager and delete all usb entries and reboot and windows will install the usb2 drivers next time you boot.
if you get a slipstreamed version of xp you dont need to do this as it installed usb2 drivers rightaway.
slipstream means a xp disc with sp1 on it.
My XP cd is already SP1. Also tried on BIOS to use only USB 1.1V
    PS2.
tried to use the other ps2 contact ?
No. Could i use the keyboard PS2 to plug the mouse?
    SOUND.
this is not my area but it could be a good idea to post what the equipment is.
have you tried the latest drivers from http://www.nvidia.com ?[/quote]
Its a brazilian brend. You wont know. CCE. Its works fine with DVDs, my old SB Live! and others. Only with my K7N2 do not work properly. Its an AC3 decoder. The problem gets worse when i use the Radeon 9100 tv out.
Look like the problem on this thread.

  • Logitec H360 USB headset  sound output

Macbook Pro, 10.8.3, 2.8 GHz, 2 core, 8 GB RAM, I am using Logitec H360 USB headset with Adobe Connect. Sound output is through built-in speakers and not the headset. The mic works ok. Correct setting in System Preference and Adobe Connect audio setup wizard. I have the same results with another Logitec headset. I can get headset output sound to work with a headset that has mini-plugs and a iMic adaptor.

    Just one thought...
IF there is a setting in the game where you can select the soundcard/audio out then you might just be able to route voice thru that and game sounds thru the soundcard.
I have used my usb headset for voice/talk and set the soundcard for all other audio.

  • Direct sound output to USB soundcard

    Hi.
I recently installed Arch on my laptop and i must admit that it was love at first sight :-)
I am about to build a music server which is going to run mpd.
Is it posible to configure mpd to output directly to a USB Sound Card bypassing any mixers and ALSA?
    If so, how?
    Thanks

Sorry, but bypassing ALSA is not an option. ALSA is the system sound daemon. You run alsactl to configure what soundcard you want, and add alsa to your DAEMONS in /etc/rc.conf. For more info, check out our awesome wiki!

  • Sound Output from Logic Express 8 with new USB Guitar Pedal

Hello, everyone. I am guitarist. I have just bought an effects pedal from Vox called the Tonelab ST, which has a USB out. When I connect it to my G5, Logic sees it okay, and selects it as the audio device in the Preferences pane. The problem is that it shuts off my sound output and reroutes it through the USB pedal. If I hook the pedal up to my amp, I hear both. I tried adjusting the sound output through the System Preferences, but that is okay. If I start a different program (like iTunes) it plays through my system like normal. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You need some pro help. I'm only a stand-in while others aren't addressing your difficulties. I would suggest poring over the manual.
Some thoughts: I have seen demos of folks using multiple output options and switching among them. Me, i'm only using one input (my mixer) and one output (my mixer). I run my guitar into the mixer to record while running other tracks out to the mixer to monitor. When I've recorded a part I play back the entire thing through the mixer. I used a Firewire Solo (which I do not recommend) as the analog/digital converter between the mixer and computer. Now I'm using a little USB gizmo that came with my new Behringer mixer and i address is as "USB Audio Codec" in Logic.
So in Prefereces > Devices > Core Audio I have it set to "USB Audio Code" and this functions as BOTH my input and output. Well: How to get multiple outputs. I think you'll have to go to the part in the manual that addresses "Environments" and add another output mechanism, specificall distinguishing between your preferred output options.
In your above post you say you record something and it "sounds great". How are you monitoring this to conclude how it sounds? Outside of Logic? I asked whether you were routing your playback audio (of your "input 2") and you didn't say. It is routing to "Output 1-2". Does "Output 1-2" in the mixer display bounce up and down indicating output activity? Does the "Master" fader in the mixer display bounce indicating output activity?

  • How to connect my iphone 4s to a USB sound card for 5.1 speakers?

How to connect my iphone 4s to a USB sound card for 5.1 speakers?

    You can't:
    1. iPhone sound output is stereo, not Dolby 5.1 compatible.
    2. iPhones do not connect sound output by standard USB.  The connecting device has to be iPhone compatible.

  • How to change sound output?

    Howdy
I recently bought a high-end toslink cable which I connected from the optical/digital out from my iMac to my receiver. The sound quality is excellent, however I noticed that all sounds now gets passed to my Hifi system all the time. The only way (I could find) to route sound to the internal speakers is by physically unplug the cable. This is really not workable in the long run as it wears down the plug and, not to mention, my patience...
So, anyone know any way to switch output to internal speakers w/o having to unplug the cable? Or is there another approach (I'm thinking Airport Express)?
    /Cheers

Unfortunately, you cannot select +Internal speakers+ in System Preferences Sound pane Output tab, if you have something plugged into the audio output port.
If you got an AirPort Express, its AirTunes feature would certainly work for iTunes output. However, I believe AirTunes would only play the output of iTunes. So it would work great as long as you were only playing songs and videos using iTunes, because all other sounds will come from your computer speakers. No need to change any setting manually, after you are done listening over the stereo system. However, it would not work so great, if you wanted the audio output of some other programs to be played from the stereo system; but there seems to be a third-party solution for that issue
    http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/
If you have separate powered computer speakers that connect using a standard mini-jack, one alternative is to get a USB (or possibly FireWire) sound output device (if you want to be able to change the sound output setting manually). The least expensive one may be the Griffin iMic.
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/
It provides a second sound output port over USB, so it should show up as a separate choice in System Preferences Sound pane Output tab. Therefore, you should be able to use the Sound preference pane to manually switch the sound output from you stereo system to the computer speakers connected over the USB iMic.

  • Digital Sound Output suddenly muted (though Apple TV is not)

I'm wondering if there's a simple explanation (and fix) to the problem.  Before upgrading iTunes and OSX to the most current versions, I encountered the problem of no output via USB.  That problem I attributed to a broken audio output jack requiring an expensive repair.  But then I discovered that by using a digital plug the "USB Audio Output" automatically appeared as "Digital Output" in the sound panel (of System Preferences).  Problem solved.  Once again I was able to output sound from my iMac to my Onkyo Receiver and Wharfdale speakers (the equipment that's next to my computer).
But now I'm seeing "Digital Out" in my Sound panel with a dimmed, muted speaker icon in my Menu Bar, indicating (correctly) that no audio is going through the output panel of the computer.  At the same time, when I switch to Apple (or Fire) TV in my Sound panel, the speaker icon in my Menu Bar plus volume waves are once again shown in bold black, indicating (correctly) that Apple TV in another room of the house is working just fine.
I confess I haven't tried unplugging Apple TV to see if this would fix my problem at my computer (which sees the greater use by far).  But it never occurred to me (til now) that Audio via the computer's Output Jack and Audio via Wi-Fi and Fire TV might be an "either / or" proposition.  If it is, I can live with it.  If I can have both, that would make living all the easier.
    Thanks for any illumination,
    Cap

I'm back in business.  Something happened, and the digital output is once again pushing audio from my imac to my receiver-amp.

  • USB Audio output for a intel Mac Mini

Is there a USB Audio output device I can get for the Intel Mac Mini, that works in both Mac OS X and Windows XP Home?

  • Suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini

please suggest me a usb sound card for mac mini (i need 5.1 sound)

The Griffin Technology FireWave will give you the 3 'cables' ("FireWave outputs six channel audio through three 1/8” (3.5mm) stereo mini-jacks: Left/Right, Center/Subwoofer and Right Surround/Left Surround.") connection for surround sound (speakers) audio. Whether or not a particular headphone set is compatible, you might ask Griffin directly about that. If you're playing a DVD with VLC or the Apple DVD Player, you will get surround sound. But, you'd have to find an MP3 with multi-channel audio inside it to play surround sound out of iTunes.

  • Having problems choosing sound output through HDMI to my television, any one any ideas?

About alsa dmix, and for the record:
On an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     E7500  @ 2.93GHz, the following are my finding about
quality/cpu when mixing two streams at 44khz:
    a snippet from my .asoundrc
    #converter "samplerate_best" # perfect: 16%cpu, maybe overkill
    #converter "samplerate_medium" # almost perfect: 6%cpu
    #converter "samplerate" # good: 4%cpu, definitely usable
#converter "samplerate_linear" # bad: 2%cpu, way better than default wine resampler
#converter "samplerate_order" # very bad: 2%cpu, like the default wine resampler
Here is the reference topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=942724
I may be wrong, but in an opensource world (code reusing), i really doubt pulseaudio could lead to better quality/cpuuse tradeoff.
Pulseaudio, being just another layer atop of alsa, could only lead to higher cpu usage.
