Intermittent video

Hi,
I have a new Mac Pro with the GT120 card, I have a new 24" cinema display in the mini display port and my old 20" Cinema display in the DVI port. These are set up as a dual monitor to expand my desktop set-up.
Occasionally, the 24" will "go black" for an instant. I'm trying to figure out if it's related to screen hot corners and the differences between the new LED monitors and the old type, or if it is perhaps a video card problem.
Everything passed hardware test, both apple's and techtool pro's.
There may be absolutely nothing wrong, I'm just looking for opinions, from veterans with this machine.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
No new drivers? I wonder about that.. I had to install drivers for my 285 to run on 10.5.8, but on SL it claimed to already have them and wouldn't let me install the Driver.
The back lighting goes away so your whole screen goes black, is that right? That's awful.
Driver/software issue, could very well be. But if where you take your mac into has one of these you might give it a try, this is the best of the adapters Apple makes and usually works better for most than the others. I hate this mini display port nonsense Apple has come up with.
Well, the online Apple store is down for a bit.. When it comes back up look under video and accessories and look for a 99 dollar mini display port adapter. It looks kind of convoluted compared to the other ones there.
If that works you have a solution. An unfairly, in my view, expensive one.

  • Intermittent video problem on Adobe Connect Pro

    Hi,
I have this intermittent video problem on the Adobe Connect pro server. The video connent sometime display blank even though it showed playing in the status bar and I can hear the audio part of it. Do someone have similar problem as mine?
    Thanks

I've had to "cache" uploaded videos by playing them shortly before the audience will see them. For me, the cache holding time when using Adobe's servers is about 5 minutes.

  • Intermittent video mask

I have inserted a video mask into QT Pro 7.2. The background movie is on loop. when in full screen, the mask works first time (all black) and then goes grey and then goes back to black. This alternates irregularly as the movie re-loops. Any ideas?

First of all, thanks for your attention, nbar
    I have two ongoing problems:
1st - intermittent video loss - I have to press any button on the remote every minute or so (sound will go through, steadily), just to get the "image" back...
2nd - This content requires HDCP for playback
Hard reset is unplugging for several minutes? Just did and also followed the article on the Sleep procedure and nothing happened....

  • Intermittent video/audio freezes with Quantum Client

I upgraded to Quantum 2 weeks ago.   On my client, I am experiencing intermittent video/audio freezes that last about a second (rewind/replay is normal so it is not a problem with the source material).   I have experienced the problem with both live TV and recorded shows.   Sometimes we can watch an hour or more with no problems then there will be a cluster of 5 or more events, often within less then a minute of each other.   At first I though this was just an audio dropout, but now see it is a problem with both sound/audio -- no pixelation, no blackouts, just screen freezing or going very slow for a second or two.
At the suggestion of Verizon tech support, my connection to the client is all component and digital optical audio (I used to be HDMI for video, but because of my home theater needed to be digital optical for sound).
I have also noticed times where the response to the remote on both the client and server systems slows down with delays.   For example, when watching a show on the server, if I hit the quick (1 minute) rewind key -- I will see the server blink indicating it got the IR command, but nothing happens for 10 seconds or more.  In fact, if I hit the key several times, it will queue up the commands and do a long rewind 10 - 30 seconds after the first remote keypress.
Is this a media server problem?  On my latest call to tech support, they were suspecting a coax issue -- but rewiring my house is neither easy nor cheap.   Plus wouldn't a coax issue manifest problems all of the time as opposed to a quick series of problems in a 5 minute cluster an hour or so into a night's viewing.
I would prefer to keep Quantum; but I have not yet returned my original multi-room DVR setup (that worked fine) and need to determine if this can be fixed or should I just give up and return the Quantum boxes instead.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have actually had a very good experience with Verizon Technical Support.  On my last call, tier 2 support did a remote test of my cable connections and detected a problem.   A technican was then scheduled to come to my house.   The technican addressed 4 problems.
    1.  The client boxes were sent to me without end-caps (signal terminators) for the coax out ports;
    2.  The 4 way spliter needed to be replaced (the original was provided by Verizon);
    3.  The fiber box was not properly grounded;  and
    4.  We moved the cable modem next to the splitter putting it closer to the other units and bypassing a 50' cable run that may or may not have had problems.  -- Of course this last fix had me running cat5e cable to the office where the modem was, but so it goes.
Anyway, after those fixes, my droppout problem appears to have gone away.

  • New Mac Mini intermittent video problems

I just set up a Mac Mini 2009 version and I'm using 2 LCD monitors. One is a Planar PX2611W and the other is A Samsung Syncmaster 191t. Most of the time they work fine but I'm getting intermittent problems:
    1. The main monitor (plugged into the mini DVI port) occasionally just displays multicolor static noise.
It resolves itself after a couple of minutes.
    2. The secondary monitor (mini display port) was working but then just stopped displaying. I checked the connections and they were good. I was finally able to get it working again by unplugging and replugging in the connection to the mini display port.
Could this be a faulty video card or a faulty display port?

Here is a "must-see" thread from MacBook section:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8955103&#8955103
I spent more than hour to read and here is the only take-away:
    SwitchResX - http://www.madrau.com/html/SRX/DL.shtml
I tried to add a custom resolution - VESA 1680 x 1050 H: 66.874KHz V: 59.884Hz 119MHz pixel clock, according to the 225MS specification from Samsung. You may check this from the bundled CD from your 226BW. Though, this Samsung suggested resolution made the problem even worse! The screen flash with "multicolor static noise" more frequent!
So I tried to change the V frequency to exactly 59Hz (in CVT-RB simplified mode). The problem...well...I can't say it has gone as I can't spend an hour to look at the screen to check, but I would say, better! It's worth to give it a try!

  • Airplay audio from Yosemite stutters intermittently, video remains unusable.

I've come across numerous other threads describing this issue but none seems to have a resolution other than "wait until Apple fixes it via update", so I decided to make a post and see if I could find some newer answers since it's been a while.
Upon updating my macbook pro to Yosemite back in when it was released, Airplay audio from my MacBook to my Apple TV 3rd Gen stutters for about 30 seconds after beginning Airplay and intermittently thereafter. With Mavericks, everything worked perfectly and nothing has changed hardware-wise since then, which handily implies that Yosemite is to blame. Still, I have wiped and restored both my macbook and the Apple TV (via usb), and even my router (Airport Extreme ac) in my efforts to troubleshoot with no luck. Wifi conditions are maybe 8 feet with direct line of sight and I've tried both 2.4 and 5 GHz spectra. Video airplay functions after a fashion but has a continuous stutter that makes it practically unusable. Note that this issue also affects my partner's MBP but both of our iPhone 6's continue to function perfectly.
Other solutions I have come across include disabling bluetooth on the mac, but this solution is untenable as it breaks the functionality of Continuity features which I have come to depend on and also doesn't seem to work for everyone, and several terminal commands which alter the behavior of bluetooth on my system which ultimately have the same adverse side effects as simply disabling it.
I am seriously lamenting this broken airplay functionality and, since it was a key motivator in my use of the Apple TV product, am strongly considering something different. Am I pretty much just out of luck here?

  • P6N SLI Platinum - intermittent video fault

I have recently bought the following parts:
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6420, 2.13GHz, 1,066FSB, 4MB
    MSI P6N SLI Platinum
    Akasa Ultra Quiet Active PFC 500 watts PSU (3.3V/30A, +5V/30A, +12V1/18A, +12V2/18A, -12V/0.5A, +5Vsb/3A)
    2 x 1GB Crucial PC2-5300 Non ECC CL5
    XFX GeForce 8600GTS 256MB DDR3 PCIe (PV-T84G-UDF3)
    1 x Western Digital Caviar 160GB 7200rpm, S300, 16MB SATA (system disk)
    3 x Western Digital Caviar 500GB 7200rpm, S300, 16MB SATA (data disks)
BIOS – 1.1 updated to 1.3, default settings (I'm not overclocking)
    Windows XP SP2 OEM
When I got everything installed and wired up I turned on the power and saw the MSI spaceship screen for a couple of seconds then the screen when blank.  The computer sounded as though it was continuing to boot up and eventually settled down with 4 green lights on the D-bracket 2 connector.  I powered down and physically re-fitted the video card a couple of times and it seemed to work OK.  A couple of days later, after successfully installing the OS and other applications, the same thing happened again.  Once more I took out and re-fitted the video card and this seemed to do the trick.  After this happened a couple more times I concluded there was a fault with the video card and sent it back for a replacement (efficiently handled by Dabs).  This duly arrived and as soon as I fitted it in the same thing happened again!
I’ve checked all the PSU connections and everything is where it should be.  The fault does not seem to be connected to the temperature of the processor or GPU and in fact seems to happen most often when the computer has not been on for a while.  I can continue to access data on the hard drives over my home network so everything else appears to be working even when there is no video.  I can now pretty reliably get the video working again by switching off, putting the computer case on its side and then re-fitting the video card – power back up and hey presto everything is fine for a while until it happens again a few days later.
I’m mystified.  I presume there is some kind of problem with the motherboard but would appreciate any suggestions for a solution before I take the computer to pieces again and send that back for a replacement.
    Many thanks,
    Peter

hmm... this is a strange problem. Reseating the video card, hmm... but is it every power on you will still see the MSI screen? can you go to the BIOS and disable the MSI spaceship screen? something like disable POST logo etc. And see if there is any error message? It might not be your video card.

  • RADEON 4870 - Intermittent Video problem (screenshot)

    Hi all,
This problem has been happening more and more often recently. It used to happen once a month, not it has happened three days in the row.
It usually happens when either working in Ms Office apps or just using FF / IE. I do not remember this ever happening while playing games (so im thinking it is not overheating).
It can happen 5 minutes after i turn the rig on, or a couple of hours.
I have the latest driver from ATI. I also DLed MSI's Live Update 4 to try to update the cards BIOS, but the only thing that the app detects is an update to the Audio drivers (RealTek)

  • New to FIOS with several video issues

I switched to FIOS from Comcast four days ago and now have several intermittent video and guide issues I never experienced with Comcast. I've read many posts about the new firmware (1.7) which is rolling out this month, and was hoping to get some clarification on whether these issues are addressed with the update. Sorry if I am re-hashing issues already discussed,  but I just want to be sure I'm dealing with the same problems as everyone else. The 2 STBs I have are the 7216 and the 7100. Both are connected via HDMI and both are v. 1.6.2.
    Issues on both STBs
    - Video and audio drops out for a second on HD channels, just a black screen. This occurs sometimes when switching to another channel, and usually does not recover unless I switch to another channel then back to it.
    - When switching channels, the channel does not change, even though info bar does change and shows the desired channel (if I switch back and forth between channels it will eventually switch correctly. This issue can occur using the Channel up-down button, the "Last" button, or using the number keypad.) Also, the opposite sometimes occurs - the channel changes, but the info bar takes several seconds to catch up.
    DVR (7216) only issues
    - Pixelation when trying to rewind live video (video remains live but corruption occurs llike it is trying to rewind) . Going to another channel and then back usually makes normal rewinding possible.
    - Signal drops when playing a recorded program (no audio and snow for a second or two). However, it is not the recording itself since it does not occur in the same place if you rewind the recording and play it again. This is almost the same kind of drop mentioned above, but there is snow instead of a blank screen.
I'm debating on going back to Comcast. I love the FIOS features, the extra HD channels, and the deal I got with Verizon, but it is all useless without stable performance.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. -Mike

Update: Switched from hdmi to component cables and this seems to have corrected the video and audio drops both on live TV and DVR playback. No noticable difference in picture quality. Still sometimes get a very short skip, especially the audio right after changing channels, but nothing significant and no more than what I experienced with Comcast (probably would not have even noticed if I didn't experience the bigger problem).
Still experiencing the same intermittent bugs when changing channels. The 7216 STB doesn't always change channels, although the info bar reflects the switch. The 7100 is the opposite - channel changes but info bar has long delay. Also on the 7216, still have issues backing up live video. It appears that the buffer becomes corrupt now and then. Could just be a bad drive which may be causing the channel changing issue as well. Resetting the STBs and router had no effect.
I should be getting 1.7 update soon and will see if this corrects any of these issues. I will also switch back to HDMI after the update and will post my findings
Most of what you described are supposed to be fixed with 1.7. And as you saw most of it was fixed by switching to the component cables. Those items that are fixed by this are the ones that are being focused on with the 1.7
However, the problem with the info bar not changing in a timely manner. This will likely not be fixed. Those that already have 1.7 still have this issue. Also I've noticed lately that both my DTV DVR and my TIVO are both starting to do the same thing as my 6416 Verizon. (I have DTV with Tivo at another location). All three DVR's on two different companies are doing the same delay of 3-5 seconds when changing channels before the info bar changes. I watch the boards here and dont see any solutions and both DTV and TIVO said it is just a delay in the software on the DVR and that there is nothing they can do about it. It sounded like a cop out but since it is happening with 3 differnt manufactures and on two different companies, I'm not sure where to put the blame on this one.
the short skip that you see when changing channels is normal. usually this is when the resolution of the program changes especially when going from SD to HD. I've seen this on every digital system I've ever used. Dont think this is anything to be conserned about.
The problem with the box not changing channels. This is another story all together. This is one to be worried about and work on correcting. Does it only happen when using the remote? what if you use the channel up and down on the box itself? will it do the same with the other remote from the other box? Have you tried calling TS and had them reset the box yet?

  • IPhone video wont sync to any iOS devices

I have 2 iPhone4's, 1 iPad and 1 iPad2 ..  Up until a month or so ago everything was "magical"...
Now, no videos recorded on either iPhone will sync to any of the iPhones or iPads after importing into iPhoto.. All photos sync fine..
All devices have the newest iOS; iPhoto 11 (9.1.5) and the problem was also happening on the previous version of iPhoto before upgrading to 9.1.5 today.
    OS X 10.6.8 ...

    Update/correction:
it's not ALL videos.. I just took some test videos and they sync just fine.. so it's only some/intermittent videos.. like all the video we just took on vacation up thru earlier today.. and videos taken weeks/months ago..

  • T60p XP video driver problems

    Hi,
Just had to reformat and reinstall my T60p, and have put XP SP3 and the lenovo ATI video driver v8.533 on. Since then, I've had intermittent video redraw problems - parts of windows not being redrawn when minimising / maximising. Seems to affect all applications, and there's very little else installed other than a couple of portable apps.
It seems that sometimes the video performance is really really bad - windows leaving trails behind them when being dragged across the screen, just like an unaccelerated video driver would. And various rectangles of windows failing to be redrawn completely.
But sometimes, its working fine - I can't see a pattern to it (yet). I've tried reinstalling the driver from a fresh download, and I've tried disabling acceleration in the troubleshooting section of display properties, with no effect. And there doesn't seem to be anything in CCC which helps, but for info, here's what it says:

Yes, that's the link I got the video driver from.
I tried downloading the bios flash utility from your link anyway, but it said I already had the latest version (which is what I thought), and didn't need to update. I confirmed this by booting into the bios config screen, and it definitely displays ...3WW there. I must admit I had assumed the bios details from CCC were for the GPU bios, not the machine's bios. But I couldn't find any references to updating the GPU bios.

  • How many Touchsmart users have had video / display problems?

I'm wondering if any other Touchsmart users that use the Nvidia chips have had video issues?  Nvidia & HP have admitted issues with some products, though HP don't mention the Touchsmart as one of the affected models, despite the fact that some Touchsmarts (eg IQ770) have both the GeForce Go 7600 chip and AMD Turion processors. But many HP users are reporting problems with other models as well.
In my case my IQ770 completely failed with a sort of checker board pattern within the warranty period, and HP fixed it (eventually!). Now the warranty has expired I'm experiencing intermittent video issues whereby the screen colors go all weird for varying periods (minutes to days), as though the color depth has gone way down, or someone is using a bad chromakey effect. Anecdotally this appears to be heat related. I've ruled out software  issues by clean booting from a boot CD. Unfortunately the intermittent nature means that even if I send it for repair, I won't immediately know if the problem has been succesfully fixed, or if in fact anything was done at all!!
So has anyone else experienced video problems?

  • Late 2013 15" MBP Video Failure

The display failed on my MBP in recent weeks; backlighting still illuminating.  Apple Store stated it needed a new logic board; still under warranty.  Is this a common issue with this generation?  My early 2008 15" MBP display also failed early last year, prompting the purchase.  Not reading anything about excessive video failures with the late 2013 edition - am I missing something?
My 2000 14" 500 mhz Powerbook (Pismo) also suffered intermittent video failure in 2007.  Three independent Apple repair shops misdiagnosed the problem, which persisted until a relative working for the Dell factory repair depot in Tennessee correctly diagnosed and repaired the problem.
I moved files off of the dead display 2008 to the then new 2013 MBP; same process for moving files to a 2013 iMac?  I want to wipe the MBP's HD and install a fresh copy of the most recent OS before turning it over to the Apple Store for repair.
Any/ all comments and advice will be considered and welcome.

Apple tech reset the PRAM (something I didn't think to do) during a recent store appointment and now all is well.  Have my new iMac largely set up like I want it for the moment.  Hope to do some more 'fine tuning' when I get by the house for a couple of days next week.

  • If you are desperately waiting for a new update... Read this!

WOW! Just saw this post. This is really pushing me towards Roku or Andoid mini-PC...  I did their survey and commented in there that I do realize technology is always changing/improving/etc... But the existing WD TV lives that I have could very easily be fixed with a proper firmware update. One that fixes the rather serious memory leak, particularly with Netflix. And I know it wouldn't be that hard to get a proper programmer to resolve how slow the device is to refresh it's library from an NAS. Just need someone to take the time. Really hope WD is reading this, as they are going to end up putting a really bad name behind a device that has some amazing potential! It just needs to be finished, rather that left in this "beta" stage it's in now.

I believe it was more to do with a licensing thing so they took out Netflix. We know the WD TV (2014) got a FW update 1.01.30 at about the same time that WD TV Live Streaming had it's last release 2.02.32 - and it was mainly about introducing pretty much the same feature set to both (in BOLD and italics): WD TV FW v1.01.30 Aug 2014:Resolved Issues:• Supports BBC iPlayer, BBC News and BBC Sport (UK only) • Supports search feature at the Grid UI home screen from the WD IR remote • Updated WD TV End-User License Agreement (EULA) • Updated TMDB API image URL process• Resolved reboot issue when manually getting content information• Resolved issue with content playback stopping after long duration of play• Resolved audio out of sync and intermittent video freezes with .mp4 formats with AAC audio vsWD TV FW v2.02.32 Aug 2014:Resolved Issues:• Supports Miracast. • No Startup Chime or Display

I just installed a new HD and and preceeded to test the operation during re-assembly. I also used compressed air to clean dust from fans etc while it was disassembled. After the LCD was initially re-installed (screwed down), there was static video interference & intermittent video loss. I reconnected the wire terminals and reseated (screwed), this time it booted to OSX disk and I proceeded to format drive. Now I shut it doen from the menu and installed front cover. prior to screwing in place, I performed another startup test, this time there was no chime and no video. Board displays two green LED's out of 4 from the left side. Any thoughts on what I may be facing here? Perhaps something may need re-seated?

Well, the issue appears to be random and has occurred again. It seemed to have triggered when installing the front case screws along the bottom right side of the panel. I noticed that some of the screws seem to be very tight going in as if cross threaded but they are not. I was very careful to ensure the frame was completely seated with no obstructuons before starting to install the screws. The second one is from the bottom right corner triggered the display to go dead. I removed the screw, restarted and all is OK again ?!@#. If someone can suggest a board component that may be a likely culprit I would appreciate it. Since this is also my first time using and replacing a hardware component of a MAC I would appreciate any further assistance.
