Intermittent whine coming from my CPU

A couple of days ago, I started to hear a distant sound late at night. Soon I realized it was a very quiet noise coming from the depths of my CPU. It's a whiney kind of sound, like someone trying to start a car, except that car happens to be a deep-voiced crying woman. It happens once every seven seconds or so, irregularly. (I'm trying to record it so that if somebody would like to hear it, I can send them an mp3.) I'm not sure if the sound is there other times though I'm guessing it is. I'm not around most of the day, and it's never quiet enough to hear anything like this till nighttime.
I'm not trying to get tech support this way, but perhaps someone here has heard this sound before. It's kinda scary sounding, but when you think it's someone crying down the street. As far as a noise coming from a computer, it isn't the most upsetting sound I've ever heard. And I must admit my computer has not been behaving poorly recently. Still, if anyone out there has said, "Yeah, I know that sound!" while reading this post, please reply!
Thanks!

i had the same problem, but I took out most of the stuff and reattached it all, ram vid card powers connectors ide cables, and it seems to of gone
maybe worth a try

  • MacBook Buzzing/Whine coming from top left

I have a C2D, 2.2GHz, late 2007 model 13" white MacBook (not pro). I am experiencing a whine/buzz from the top left of my keyboard that starts as soon as the grey screen appears during boot. I have tried everything related to the CPU whine people talk about (just google Macbook or macbook pro and whine or buz) but to no avail (except using CHUD to disable one of the cores, so by everything I mean SMC and PRAM reset, QuietMBP and ShhMBP) none of which has helped in the slightest. The buzz is quite prominent, I can hear it currently as it sits on my desk next to me and I type on my desktop (even though I can hear the desktop fans going too, so the room is not utterly quiet). I don't know what else to do, I'm considering re-formating and re-installing the OS to see if some update/software caused the issue (I doubt it, but am at a loss of what else to try). Anybody have any other suggestions?
The reason I have not disabled the 2nd core using CHUD is I don't really want to reduce performance by limiting myself to one core (also, if it matters, I had apple install 2GB of ram rather than the normal 1GB when I ordered).
Any help at all would be nice, the noise is literally starting to drive me bananas!
Also, I checked for run-away processes in Activity Monitor, and even thought it might be fan related rather than processor at one point, and installed and tried fan control software, which made zero difference. The noise does seem worse when the computer is running a more CPU intensive task.

You're right, I doubt that it's a speaker issue but I just wanted to check anyway.
What you are describing sounds just like the problem I have, except that my noise goes away when I use quietMBP. I usually have to use a setting of 90 or so in quietMBP. In fact I can change the pitch of the noise by changing the quietMBP settings.
When power is connected,I believe the power brick works in harmony with the macbook to produce the lovely sound you're hearing. I had Apple replace my power brick, but that didn't solve anything. Once the brick is disconnected from the macbook, the power brick will stop making the noise, but the CPU whine will continue. I heard that logic board replacement sometimes fixes the problem, but I didn't want Apple to rip my computer apart, so I just decided to live with the noise. After a while (~3 months) you get used to it.
So the only solution, as far as I know, is to replace the logic board. Keep replacing it until it stops. It's not present in 100% of macbooks, so if you keep replacing that board, you'll finally end up with a good one.
I trust you read this already:
    http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/159/the-quiet-mac
By the way, if the buzzing is louder when you increase CPU usage, more than likely you have a busted resister or capacitor on your board. The solution to that, of course, would be to replace the logic board--since the power transformer assembly sits on the logic board.

  • High Pitched Intermittent Beep coming from brand new mini

This is driving me nuts, beeeep.....beeeeeep...beep...beep.. beeeeeeeeep. non stop from the moment on turn on the mini. is this normal???
    1.83, 1 gig of ram

If you are within the free 90-day telephone support period I would just call AppleCare, and have them sort it out.
Alternatively, try booting from your install disc (but don't install!) and see if the Mini beeps when just sitting at the first install screen.
To boot from the install disc, insert the disc, shutdown, startup, and hold down the C key at the startup chime -- and keep holding it until the "gear" starts spinning on the screen.
You could also do the same, but hold down the D key, to run the hardware diagnostic tests.

  • High pitch whine/noise coming from 880G-E45 when PC is off

I just recently built a PC with the 880G-E45 motherboard without any major hiccups except for the fact that my PC makes high pitch whine noise (similar to a charging flash bulb on a camera) whenever it is powered off. When the PC is on and just after the PC is turned off, there is no high pitch whine at all.
From what I can tell, the noise is not coming from the CPU, but the corner of the motherboard where the 3 LED-lit RESET, CLEAR CMOS, and POWER buttons are. I eliminated all other components of the PC by only powering them one by one and whenever the 24-pin ATX power cable is plugged in, the high pitch whine noise would be made.
Is there anything I can do to silence this noise or is this normal for this motherboard? This is a problem since the PC is for my room which is very small and while i can't hear it during all the activities of the day, in the dead of night, it is loud enough to keep me awake. The only shorthand solution was to switch off the power on the PSU (BTW, will this damage my PC if I do this too much?).
    Here are my specs:
-AMD Athlon Phenom II X4 840
    -880G-E45
    -BIOS: A7576AM3 V3.10
    -Samsung 1TB sata drive
    -Corsair CX430 V2 430w
    -Kingston HyperX Blu 4x2GB
    -Win7 x64

    Quote
I'm guessing the power being output by the PSU is too much.
Nonsense, the PC will only draw as much power from the PSU as it needs, not the other way around.
Evidently, the CX430W is somehow faulty. Contact your retailer, or Corsair directly, and see if they will replace it for you.

  • I have a strange noise coming from within my 2011 iMac Desktop.

I have a strange noise coming from within my 2011 iMac Desktop. This started 1 week ago and is intermittent. It sounds like an electronic drill. I have removed all external connections and powered up the Mac and just left  it running. Some 2 hours later the noise started. On hitting the space bar on the keyboard the noise stopped. I did a similar test and the noise started within 2 minutes so I have discounted any overheating issues.
With keyboard activity there is an increase in the frequency of this fault.
If you open safari when the fault reappears the URL web link text starts flashing at the same frequency as the noise. This fault can appear with or without the noise.
I’ve been typing these details out on Word and as soon as I went to save  the document the noise started  and as soon as I hit the OK option in the save window the noise ceased.
    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I think this issue might be related to my wireless Keyboard. have just noticed that certain combinations of keys do not work. The Right hand shift + ? didn't work but started this noise. Hit another key and the noise stopped Also I have problems using the right hand shift key with the letters  Y, H & N , they don't work and are all in line.
So I'm taking the keyboard back to John Lewis. it will be easier to carry that the screen !!

  • Buzzing/whining sound coming from top left keyboard area...?

For a couple of months now (I think, I can't pinpoint when exactly this started), there has been an annoying buzzing/whining sound coming from the very top left part of my keyboard (I think). It happens when the computer is on and dies down once I turn it off but kind of does a very quiet "tick-tick" thing for a few minutes after shutdown. At first I thought it was the screen because it sounds like it's coming from the very bottom left corner of the screen (or the very top left corner of the keyboard, I can't tell)... but adjusting the brightness doesn't seem to affect it. It increases when I'm typing or moving the cursor and decreases when I'm not doing anything, but it's always present. I have checked my hard drive and everything's okay, so I'm not sure what it could be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Performance hasn't been affected (as of yet), so it's just more of an annoyance.
Another thing - for a while now (probably over a year), the screen has been flickering intermittently. It will go darker to lighter to darker to lighter quickly whether the screen has been on only a few minutes or several hours. This seems to have decreased lately, but maybe the two issues are related...?
I got my MacBook soon after they came out with the first black one, whenever that was.
    Thanks for your help!

Why not answer my question if you want help? Does your "ordinary keyboard that has midi capabilities" have a transpose function or a split keyboard mode that you may have accidentally activated? Did you try the solution I offered you?

  • High pitch whine noise from speakers and other issues

I just got a 2010 Mac Mini and transferred all of my data and apps and accessories from my old Mac Mini which was running 10.6.4 (2007 I think). One of the accessories is a Griffin Firewave. I had to get a new firewire cable to attach the Firewave since the new Mac Mini has a firewire 800 port. On the old Mac it worked great, I was able to run 5.1 speakers with no problem. With the new Mac things aren't so nice. I get a high pitch whine through the speakers. The whine will go up and down in volume with the volume control on my sound system (Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultra) as well as with the Mac volume control. I can increase the gain in the Firewave app which will increase the volume of what I want to hear without increasing the volume of the whine, however it will cause the audio I want to hear to distort. The other issue I have is that when I put the Mac to sleep it seems to cut all power to the firewire port, causing the Firewave to turn off and lose its settings. I believe this to be a bad design on the Firewave's part but the old Mac did not shut off the power to the firewire port when going to sleep so this was not an issue. So my questions are, does anyone else have problems with external sound cards having a high pitch whine noise and is there a way to prevent the firewire port from turning off when the Mac sleeps?
BTW, I have tried reinstalling the Firewave driver (several times) and I've unplugged and re-plugged the firewire cable at both ends. I have both the Mac and the sound system plugged into a line conditioner so I doubt it's dirty power. I do realize that the Firewave only claims support up to 10.5 but it was working without issue on the old Mac Mini on 10.6

I have the same problem. I have an early 2009 Mac mini and get the whiny noise from my powered speakers. The volume of the whine noise tends to change smoothly up or down, and often does a stuttering effect along with it. It stays there for up to a minute or so and then eventually goes away. It always seems to happen at random times.
I've heard this same sound effect coming from a podcast that I was listening to on my iPod Touch. It seems that the interviewer was recording from a Mac mini as well, though not sure. The sound in the recording was exactly like what I hear coming from my Mac mini. I often thought that this was a problem with my speaker system, but was surprised to find that others are experiencing the same kind of issues.

  • Harsh rattling sound coming from fan.

Normally, when I use an application that requires a lot of CPU power or when I'm watching a YouTube video, the internal fan speeds up to 6000+ RPM but it started sounding weird the past week. Right when I "wake up" my MacBook from sleep, I here a faint rattling sound coming from where the fan should be but it disipates after a few minutes. When I view a video though, the rattling becomes a bit louder combined with the normal sound of the fan. Also, I noticed when I picked up my macbook when its fan was going fast and tilted it to its sides, the rattling sound corresponds with the movement of the computer (louder each time I tilted it left to right).
Could the fan be broken/loose? I sprayed some air into the keyboard to get rid of dust but nothing changed. I recently ran out of my Applecare warranty last September. Thanks in advance!

    Hey
Sorry to say but you could be looking at a hardware problem. That being said there are still things you can  try.
Try this artile: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 for an SMC reset.
If that does not work make sure all of your software is up to date. If it is, you may have a hardware problem.
Run the Apple hardware test that came on the disc with the computer to see if it comes up with anything... Although sometimes it doesn't even if there is a problem.
    Regards,
    Britt.

  • Accurate statistics on skewed foreign key when coming from parent

    Hi,
I will be as short as possible:
    - we have two tables in a parent - child relationship. The foreign key is very skewed and we need to get child details coming from the parent
    - CBO is not considering the skeweness from histograms on foreign key column (I suppose it cannot as it is the example without going into tables) and it calculates the expected returning rows in the execution plan as no_rows / distinct_values => 10,000 / 3 = 3,333 rows for both execution plans, even if they returns effectively 1 row / 9,999 rows. In histograms exists this information but it cannot be extracted by CBO as it is.
Any idea how to help CBO to choose separate execution plans for query 1 and query 2 excluding hints or query modifications?

    Hi,
you can create a function based index on child table, and query that value instead of parent_id from parent table.

  • Future Mac owner coming from PC

    Hello all,
I'm coming from the PC side of music making.
The last time I used a Mac for music was back on Sound Tools on my 2Si and Opcode's Vision.
So I'm a little out of the loop
    I'm getting an iMac.
What difference will I see between the 2.8 and 3.06 Processors.
What difference will I see between 2 and 4GB of memory.
On my PC, I have one Hard Drive for my system files and programs, one Hard Drive for my loops, and another for my audio recordings.
I don't know how efficient the Mac OS is for hard drive usage.
So; If I run with many loops, should they be installed to another drive.
Is it OK to keep your loops and audio recordings on the same hard drive.
Do you place them on the internal drive, or external drive.
And speaking of external drives, how well do firewire soundcards work in tandem with external firewire hard drives?
How about using a firewire audio interface and putting audio and loops on USB?
I know there are many questions here, so If there is a web site that already addresses all of this, please post the link instead of typing your fingers off.
As I said, I'm new to the "new" Mac world and don't even know where to begin to look for answers.
Thanks so much for your help!
    Peter

I just bought a 3.06 GHz iMac mostly for running Logic. Here's my setup: System Files and Program Files on internal drive, essential sound samples and instruments on main internal drive (e.g. EXS samples), nonessential samples on FireWire 800 external drive (e.g. Reason samples). Recordings on External drive. I have not yet purchased another External Drive devoted to recording. I don't do a lot of live recording, but if I did I'd have a second external drive for that.
Your iMac will come with two Firewire ports. One is FW 800 the other is FW 400. If you get a FW audio interface (get one, don't get USB, not fast enough), get FW 800 external drives, keep them on one port, and then put your FW 400 Audio interface on the FW 400 port. There's some sense out there that once you attach a FW 400 device to either port, you slow the FW 800 drives to FW 400 speeds. I just posted a discussion about it here, and the response is that it isn't that simple. I have found that my FW 400 Audio Interface (Focusrite Sapphire) does not slow down my FW 800 drive. I think its because I have them on two different ports and that does matter (even though they share the same internal bus).
I bought the 3.06 GHz iMac, not really for the faster processor, but for the better video card, the nVidia 8800 GS (which is apparently really an underclocked 8800 GT--the same high end video card used in the Mac Pro). I did this because Apple has announced that it will shortly be coming out with a new OS version, called Snow Leopard, which will have few if any new features, but is intended to make the OS much more efficient at using two things: multiple Cores, and the GPU (graphics card), but dumping more work onto the GPU than the current and previous versions of the OS. Also, Apple has recently been moving away from ATI cards to making most of its current line (all laptops for instance) to nVidia graphics cards. I presume (but do not know) that support in Snow Leopard from Apple will be geared much more heavily toward nVidia, and that graphics chip, which when you look at the specs on Apple's iMac page, show the card has at least 2-3 or more times the computing capacity of the ATI cards on the lower end iMacs. You can build-to-order the 2.8 GHz iMac with the faster nVidia video card if you buy it online. The cost savings is just, I think, $200. So, I figured I'd just fork over the extra little bit of money for the best processor, video card, and larger stock HD.
If I had to buy it over again, I'd get the 1TB internal drive. Its eSATA II, with transfer speeds up to 3Gps, which means it is theoretically as much as two times faster than even a FW 800 drive will be (I think). I went with the stock 500 GB internal drive.
As to RAM, boost it to 4 Gigs. I did. Its cheap. Crucial has the right RAM for it at just $56 for the entire 4 Gig kit (you remove the original 2x1 Gig modules and replace them with 2 x 2 Gig modules). Simple as pie to do by the way. Apple charges $150 for this upgrade. Its a ripoff. The RAM may not "speed up" Logic, but it will do two things that you will want. It will allow Logic to add more effects and instruments simultaneously into RAM, thereby reducing the need to read/write from your drives. It will also allow you to run other stuff in the background without getting out of Logic (e.g. Safari). Besides, for just $56, you'll know you have your machine in optimum shape to do what you want, and if you hit a wall, you won't be sitting there wondering: "is it the RAM?"
By the way, so far, I have found the iMac more than fast enough to handle seemingly ridiculous loads (to test it while I still had time to return it, I created a song with four very sample heavy EXS tracks, two Sculpture tracks, and an Ultrabeat track). I threw on Space Designer to five of the seven tracks, along with the master track (I know, sounded dumb, but that wasn't the point), along with compressors, modulators, and numerous other insert effects). With all of this going on, the highest CPU load I hit was 55%. I then, just to check it out, had Logic running in the background playing the song, launched Safari, Mail, Word, and Photoshop CS3. Not a hiccup. Only when I then launched Bridge CS3, and it drew 800 MB of my original 2 Gigs of RAM, did Logic stop and tell me I had insufficient system resources. After buying the extra 2 Gigs of RAM, ran the song, the other stuff, and couldn't believe this machine could get all of this done. Nice. I kept the iMac.

This is OK because the Conexant sound chip does not support other sources
Ive got a unit with Realtek sound chips and with Conexant sound chip.
The Realtek support the recording from other sources but Conexant doesnt.

  • Sound coming from mobo, when using network.

When I download files from my other pc, with full load (10 MB/s)
a sound is coming from my K8N Neo, close to the CPU and RAM,
    is this a known fact?

Well i don't think it's my router or ISP. Because on my other computer, i never experienced this problem. But it is a possibility. Here is the senerio... I load up google, google have almost unlimited bandwidth, their servers are stong, so i use them as a test subject. I loaded it in mozilla firefox. It came up, but as i refresh , sometimes it comes up right away, sometimes it just stays there "loading" and then time out.... I am not sure what is wrong it... It could be the OS, currently running Windows XP Pro SP1. Tried installing SP2, almost killed my system (wouldn't boot in normal mode). Anyways, back to the high pitch sound, i just tried my computer on an Antec 550w true power. Here is a link to the spec. And i did the usual test of copying large files (dvd rips) into my computer from my linux file server. The high pitch sound is still there, i don't know what is wrong with it. Some people suggested it might be the chokes, i tried applying pressure, but not really too much, to the chokes and see if it will quiet the thing down. Didn't work. Anyone know how much pressure i should be applying on those chokes? I won't want to damage it.

  • Annoying hum coming from MBP 09

    Hey guys,
My Macbook Pro has been driving me nuts for the past week. Up until about last weekend, my MBP has been dead silent. I don't know if this is the case with everyone's, but it was the main reason I chose to try out a Mac instead of investing in another PC at the moment. However, there's a noise coming from it that completely negates the value of a Mac to me, and quite frankly I'm superbly annoyed.
There's a low humming/buzzing sound that it's emitting, and me being both a musician and nocturnal, it bugs the **** out of me when I'm up late working. It's not very loud; you can drown it out with pretty much any kind of noise. I don't know if it's the fans or the hard drive.
From the moment I press the power button, the sound starts. It doesn't go away, but it doesn't really get worse when I run other apps. I checked activity monitor, and there's no application using up a grotesque amount of CPU (the highest is usually activity monitor itself). I also checked iStat, and the temperatures all seem to be quite normal. The weird thing is, the fans are both running at around 2000rpm when idle.
Sorry for a long winded post, but this issue is really driving me insane.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Your MBP is still under warranty, mnfthyr, so the obvious answer is to send it back to where you bought it from and ask for another, or for it to be repaired.
It may be simply an out of balance or dirty fan. It may be a defective HD. Yes the fans always run at 2000 rpm when idle. That is their idle speed. Nothing weird there. Normally they are pretty well silent when doing so, however.
But which bit of the MBP does this sound come from? Simply providing a bit more locational information might make it easier to pin-point the cause, whether it be mechanical or electrical.
    Cheers

  • My laptop is making a clicking noise and I think it's coming from the hard drive. Is this normal?

My laptop is making a clicking noise and I think it's coming from the hard drive.  I uploaded audio of the clicking to: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15528211/Memo.m4a.  Is this a normal sound or an indication of a problem?  Thanks in adance.

HP Pavilion G6-1b70us - Purchased 2 days ago from Office Max

That is a hard drive clicking. It sounds kind of intermittent like it might be just the hard drive safety system parking the read head on the drive. Do you get a sustained click when you try to boot up? Have you tried the hard drive health test in the BIOS? Just tap F10 as you power up and go into the setup/bios and look for the hard drive self-test and run the long form version and see what you get.
Here is the Service Manual, which is always a good thing to have:

  • Faint squeak coming from Rear Fan (?)

I have an annoying faint squeak coming from my 2004 G5 Dual 2.0.
Sounds like the noise of air escaping--or-- a high pitched squeal -- or faint chirping --or-- metal against metal (???) Whatever it is, it's new.
I thought it was the internal hard drive, but I have narrowed it down to the lower rear region, by using a medical stethoscope (i think it's the lower fan) But I'm not sure.
    1. Any experience with this?
    2. Do the rear fans slide out? And can they be oiled or replaced or do I have to take to Apple? (the CPU's look like they're in the way)
    3. or (god forbid) could it be one of the CPU's(?!?)
Thanks in advance for any advice. (the squeaking is starting to bug me!)

    Bump.
I have a very faint squek on one of mine too. Very annoying.
