Intermittent: White screen at boot, no Apple logo

Hi all
Haven't been able to find this specific symptom online. I have a client with a new (refurb) MacBook, 1 week of use. Tiger installed. About half the time, on startup, she gets a white screen (no Apple logo). Next time it happens I'll have her wait five or ten minutes to see if she gets a flashing question mark, in which case I'll know it's the hard drive. But in case she does not, has anybody seen this? There is no external drive connected, just a keyboard and a printer.
Another problem it has, which may or may not be related, is that it will hang with a SPOD (Spinning Pizza Of Death) affecting all open apps--not just one--, or will freeze up entirely.
I have removed the third-party RAM and reinstalled the Apple RAM, same symptoms.
I'll get the laptop next week and run Disk Warrior and TechTool and some other diagnostics, but wondered if the white screen meant anything to anybody.
Thanks

Even though the drive tested fine with SMART Utility (which is much more sensitive than the standard SMART Status in Disk Utility), I eventually replaced the drive and the problem has not recurred.

    Hi wiilson Cunha,
Oh man! That definitely sounds frustrating. Let’s see if we can troubleshoot this issue by following the steps in this resource:
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201412
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

  • White screen on startup wNo apple logo?

iMac running Lion was being used to browse the internet when the screen just went white.  These are the things I have tried, Resetting SMC, Resetting PRAM, it won't boot in Safe Mode, off install disks or the Lion Flash Drive.  The only thing that happens is that the screen is White, I don't even see the Apple logo.  The only solutions I have seen in a couple other posts have been replacing the hard drive.  Has anyone else seen this?  If it is the hard drive why can't I boot off the install disk or even Lion on a flash drive?
I wanted to see what the community said before my last resort of taking it to the Genius Bar.

Not to leave anyone hanging on this, but the MAC had been taken to the Genius bar where, after doing everything that I did, the only 2 thoughts were video card or logic board.  After a week and apparently a new logic board and video card, it is still not showing anything but the white screen and the Genius' are stumped.  They are now going to try a new display.  My only hope now is that it gets fixed, and if this doesn't work I don't know what will happen.
I will update this thread when there is something else to report.

  • Recently downloaded and (tried to) installed IOS 8.1 for my iPhone 6 (16GB) and now all it does is load the white screen with the black Apple logo and then crashes and shows a red screen. The cycle then repeats. Suggestions?

    Title says it all.

    Hi Cornelius6505,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone does not start up past the Apple logo. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Exporting slideshows results in file with only the first picture then a blank white screen with music. Apple bug or am I missing the obvious?

When I export slideshows the result is a file with only the first picture then a blank white screen with music. Apple bug or am I missing the obvious?

Usually when the phone shows just the white Apple logo, it indicates an issue with the system software that prevents the phone from finishing it's boot sequence. When this happens, you will need to restore the phone, which removes all data and replaces the system software with a fresh set.
Since the phone is not seen in iTunes when it's in this state, you will have to put it into DFU mode for iTunes to see it.
To put the phone in DFU mode:
    - make sure the phone is connected to a computer with the current version of iTunes on it.
    - hold the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously for 8 seconds.
    - let go of the sleep/wake button and continue pressing the home button. The iTunes screen will show a short progress bar then show a dialog box stating that an iPod was detected that is in recovery mode.
    -click OK
-click the Restore button in the middle of the iTunes page
After the restore the phone should be back up and running and you can sync your data back.

About 45 minutes ago my iphone 5S just shut off on its own. I have tried charging it only to have the white screen with the black apple showing. How can this be repaired?

Keep it plugged in and do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignoring he red slider if that appears.

  • Starts to boot, shows Apple logo for 2+ minutes, then starts again

Yesterday the computer started to boot up as usual with the 'boot chord', Apple logo, then the screen went black, and started over again.  This time it successfully booted and ran normally for the rest of the day.  This morning, it never gets beyond the boot process; i.e. start chord, Apple logo for several minutes, then black screen and the whole process repeats over and over again.  Front panel status LED is on and steady.  I tried 5 different boot disks (internal HD, two external SuperDuper clones, a DiskWarrior DVD and the OSX 10.6 install disk and the results were the same.   It is still under extended warranty, but I can't afford the downtime for Apple to repair it.  Any idea what might be wrong?  Any thing else I might try to get it going again?

Hopefully  the Time Machine backup is intact and the computer will continue to work with it connected (requires a 3rd party eSATA RAID controller card).  Assuming all the hardware works, I am unclear how best to restore the app's from the TM backup.
The official way to do a full restore from TM is to boot from an installation DVD and select "Restore from Time Machine" from the Utilities menu. I don't see how that will work if your backup is on a third-party RAID, because the controller requires a driver that isn't on the DVD. That may be why you can't boot from the DVD.
I think your best bet is to clone the installation disc to a bootable volume and install the RAID driver on it. The volume could be hosted on an external storage device or burned to a DVD. See here for an example of how to do this.

The following is how to do a proper reset of an iDevice:
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

What operating system version, and do you have any backups of your data off the machine? TimeMachine? Option Key bootable clones? Storage? DVD's?
A reinstall of the operating system may be in order as a last resort, so if any of these steps on these links get you into the machine, make sure to backup your personal data (Music, Pictures, Documents, Movies) off the machine to a non-encrypted  powered external drive regular storage drive (not TimeMachine as it might be corrupted too) and disconnect as soon as possible.
Good Luck and report back all what you tried.
Also report what change occured before this tragedy happened, was there a  Software Update? A EFI firmware update? Etc.
