Intermittent WiFi Connections

I have a new Apple Thunderbolt Display and new MacBook Air 2011 which after a 30-60 minutes loses the WiFi connectivity.  I am using the Bluetooth Magic Trackpad with the Bluetooth iMac Keyboard.
Since I recently purchased the MacBook Air, I have been trying to establish a backup establish a Time Machine to my older Apple Time Capsule via WiFi, this only works when I disconnect from the Apple Thunderbolt display.
I have also connected periodically to a Seagate 2TB USB external drive.
I have to disconnect and restart to regain any WiFi connectivity.
I am using the latest OS X Lion and I have downloaded the latest software and firmware via Software Updates from Apple and all other software is up to date.
Curious to see if anyone else is seeing this issue.

Last night I did attempt and applied the changes recommended to the Network Preferences in the above thread and saw some performance improvements.
For the Bluetooth system preferences there are settings available that could be tweaked.  Would it make sense that these settings be somehow changed to force them to not interfere with those same settings for WiFi?
I have tried various scenarios:
As mentioned above, I have been connecting via USB directly into the MBA a Seagate 2TB external HD for iTunes music and ripped movies which take up > 150gb of space.
Plugged MBA into ATD without Bluetooth Trackpad & iMac Keyboard, WiFi worked fine.
Plugged MBA into ATD with Bluetooth Trackpad & iMac Keyboard, WiFi worked fine for a while before tabbed browser windows in Safari hourglassed and would not refresh.  Turned off Bluetooth, turned on Bluetooth re-connected, and all works fine until process repeated.
Unplugged MBA from ATD, WiFi works fine always (given that I am a WildBlue.Net Satellite user, that's an oxymoron).
Final note:  There are times when I have had all of the following "connected" to the new MacBook Air in one form or fashion which is a lot of stuff going on at the same time:
* Power cord.
* WiFi connection to Apple Time Capsule through to WildBlue satellite modem for internet.
* Bluetooth Magic Trackpad
* Bluetooth iMac keyboard
* USB 2TB Seagate Ext HD
* Apple Thunderbolt Display
* USB iPhone/iPad2 for iTunes syncing.

  • Why do I have Intermittent Wifi Connection Loss during music streaming ?

    Hello,
I have an ipad3 and an iPhone 4S and I am getting with both devices interruption of the sound when I send music to the Apple TV. It generally happens after a few minutes. The signal for the wifi is still good and I have still access to the Internet  I have tried all the recommendations of the article "iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections" but this did not help. I have used several applications for sending music to the Apple TV (music application from Apple and DSAudio from Synology) but I'm getting the same issue. I have also the same issue with the media center application from Bouygues Telecom connecting directly to my internet router. My router is a bbox sensation. I had also the same kind of issue with my old router when sensing photo albums to the internet: I had the error message "your system is running low on ressources". How can I solve these intermittent wifi connection losses ?

    Try #5.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Which means exactly what? One iPad can connect intermittently and one doesn't connect at all?  This makes it sound to me like you are having WiFi issues with both of them. At least that's how I interpret your statement.
Start by rebooting your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • How can I fix an intermittent wifi connection with my MacBook laptop

I have experienced intermittent problems with the wifi connection on my MacBook (2006, 10.6.5 OSX) computer and noticed that other users have commented about this same issue.  Not sure if the problem revolves around the updates from Apple or my wifi card but I only seem to loose my wifi connection with the MacBook.  I have other Apple products, Iphones, Ipads and IMac and they all retain the wifi connection.  Additionally, when I connect the internet cable directly to the MacBook, there is no loss of signal and I have no problem connecting to the Internet.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

After several unsuccessful attempts to resolve my intermittent wifi connection with a 2006 MacBook (I had service techs from Apple store, PeachMac and Computer Advantage check the intermittent wifi problem in store and they could not recreate this issue), I broke down and bought a new wifi card and installed it myself.  The intermittent problem was resolved and my wifi connection works fine everywhere in my home.  Ifixit's website has a great video that explains in detail how to remove and install a new wifi card and you will need the right tools and patience.  Thanks to everyone that posted comments about this issue because the comments proved helpful in solving my problem.

  • My Mac desktop has intermittent Wifi connectivity

I've had a problem with wifi connectivity for over a year now, and have had the desktop repaired once already, with no improvement. Upgrade to Mavericks has made no difference.
The computer always thinks that I have a connection to my network. In system preferences it says 'connected' but I don't actually have a connection to the internet, for example. Streaming to the Apple TV stops, or the website stops loading.
However when I go to Network Preferences and click 'assist me' then I don't have all 6 lights in green, but maybe 2-3 green and the rest yellow. I go through the reconnection, get 6 green lights, and all is back to normal.
I have many, many other things connected to this wifi network (1 desktop, 2 laptops, 2 phones, 2 ipads, 1 apple TV, one speaker) and everything else has no problems, so it is clearly not the network.
Any tips, short of throwing the desktop away and buying a new one? My nearest Apple Store is in Paris (I live in Brussels) so no Genius bar for me. Plus no car.

Thanks, but as it's an intermittent problem, and only my desktop is having it - everything else doesn't disconnect, it's more likely a problem with the computer than the network itself. Everything is up to date.
However this morning I noted that the Time Capsule thought it was in the UK (which doesn't cause a problem to anyone else, but I fixed it) and I also switched on the 5GHZ network option and connected to that.
Wireless Diagnostics is monitoring my wifi connection. I wonder if anyone knows how to interpret the logs it produces when/if my connection fails?

  • How can i fix intermittent wifi connection on imac 21"?

What I have is a mid-2011 iMac 21" entry-level computer. I was able to run wirelessly for about a year with no issues but lately my wifi connection intermittently drops every 10 minutes and it becomes very frustrating. My brother who is also using the exact same model connects to the same belkin router just fine. My iPhone 4S, my iPad, my brother's iPhone5 and the other computers in the house works just fine as well. I install all updates recommended. I would like to know if there is a workaround to get this issue fixed. Thank you.

    Hello, dee.tercias.
Sometimes a simple power cycle of the router can correct the issue that you are experiencing.  However, the issue could be a little more complex.  Wi-Fi routers need adjustments to settings periodically for optimized performance with the constant progression of wireless device technology.  Below, I have included two articles.  The first article will cover basic Wi-Fi troubleshooting.  The second article covers the recommended settings for current Wi-Fi access points.

  • Intermittent wifi connection drops on OSX 10.8.1

I've noticed since upgrading my Macbook Pro (early 2011) to 10.8, wifi connection would drop quite often if open Apple store and/or Itunes. I've tried changing wifi channels on my router, but with out success. I would have to turn wifi off/on to try restore connection, this works most times, but becoming very annoying.
I have the latest update 10.8.1 installed and no changes. My router is a dlink, about 2 yrs old.
Has anyone else come accross this? Any suggestions to try would be great.
    Thanks

Yes, this happened to both my MacBook Pro and iMac after upgrading to ML and it is very annoying.  I was hoping for a fix in 10.8.1 but no luck.  This has been pretty widely reported so I was shocked when it was not addressed.  I guess I have to call AppleCare and open a ticket.
Ok, enough of that.  I tried everything - MTU setting, new location in network settings, taking the systemconfiguration folder (/library/preferences/systemconfiguration) and deleting it, and updating my routers firmware and none, none of them worked.
It seems, at least in my case, to be tied to 802.11n and possibly the 5ghz band.  I disabled this on my router and am only using 802.11g and this and only this has cleared up the issue.  This is really disappointing but at least I am not stopping and starting wifi every 3 minutes.
    I hope this helps.

  • Intermittent wifi connectivity on laptop

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. I have an HP Elitebook 8530w. It's running Windows 7. When I open Firefox, I can get on the internet, but after a few minutes, it stops working properly an the connection will go in and out. I've tried connecting an ethernet cable directly and the problem remains. All other devices in the house work properly over wifi or ethernet. I haven't installed any new programs or visited any strange sites. I try connecting to anotehr wireless signal and teh problem remains
I install all the Windows 7 updates and I have the latest version of Firefox. My anti-virus says there are no viruses and Malwarebytes says there is no malware.
I called my ISP yesterday after the connection had stopped again and the helpful tech guy had me go into a safe mode. I was able to connect to the internet again so he thought it was an issue with software. He suggested two options:
    1) Do a system restore
    2) Reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows 7
I tried to do a system restore to a point before I noticed the problem. It failed to restore to that older point and I don't know why.
Before I Google how to reformat a hard drive and re-install Windows, I was hoping someone might have another idea. I tried Googling my problem, but the best suggestion I could find was to change my DNS settings to Google's. I tried that, but it didn't make any difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Surely no one else has seen this or at least have an opinion?

  • IOS 4.3.4 - intermittent wifi connection

Since I updated to 4.3.4 on my iPhone 4 I've not been able to connect to my wifi at all. Worked perfectly before I did the update this afternoon.
Will either connect and stay for a few minutes. or wont see the network/wont connect when prompted for the password. Anyone else having this issue. is this a known issue?

Had the same problem. I think I narrowed the issue down to wireless networks that use some form of security. I was able to briefly connect to my 802.11n network that's using WPA2, but the connection would drop quickly. Most of the time I could not connect at all. My 802.11g network had the same problem, so I tried scaling back to WPA and then to WEP. Still no luck. Tried changing password complexity and even the radio channel I was using. Finally I completely opened up the network and I could reliably connect.
I decided to revert to 4.3.3 this morning since I didn't have this problem with that iOS version. It fixed the wifi issue, but I had to wipe my phone in the process.

  • Intermittent wifi connection w/Pre

I just purchased and setup an Pre Plus. I am having a problem with connecting to my wifi network. I have been able to connect but not consistently. I can be standing two inches from my router antenna and no connection using the web browser. I then check to see if the phone has an IP address and it does. It correctly identifies the gateway, subnet address, dns server. I am using a D-Link 524 router 802.11g and every other computer in the network connects without issue. I have been able to connect and download apps and email but it is very inconsistent

I should add that I have optimal signal strength and that both the new Imac on my desk and the Ipad Air, also on the desk, do not have the same problem as the Iphone6.

  • Wrv210 intermittent wifi on mac's

i recently purchased a wrv210 router. it's got the latest (2.0.0.11) firmware. my windows based computers seem to work off the wifi without problem but my two mac's (an imac and a macbook pro) have intermittent wifi connection. they connect for some time then drop the connection and back again. wired connections are solid.
i have tried several wifi settings, various channels, i have even downgraded to 1.??? (linksys) firmware.
most routers i have installed before work almost out of the box. are we dealing with a)hardware issue b) settings issue c) mac issue?
    thanks for anyone's response

I am having this same problem.
However it doesn't matter what operating system. The wireless just drops after a wihile and nothing can connect to it.
Only a reboot will get it working again. It can last for a few days or a few hours. Doesn't seem to be any pattern.

  • IMac drops Wifi connection after 10.7.4 update

    Hello there,
I am experiencing intermittent wifi connection problems after installing the 10.7.4 update on my 2011 iMac 27".
The symption is that the iMac drop its Wifi connection after a period of time and when that happens the iMac cannot detect any wifi networks in my area (disabling & re-enabling Wifi on the iMac doesn't help). I have to resort to restarting the iMac to revive the wifi interface. Note that my other devices (including my iPhone and my MacBook Air) can connect to my Airport Extreme without any problems.
Is there any "quick-fix" solutions out there that can fix this problem? I want to avoid a complete re-install as much as possible.

    Possible short term fix:
Same issue. Mid 2011 iMac. Updated to 10.7.4 and wifi dropped. The iMac could see any SSID until it was rebooted. My MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone all fine.
I went to Apple tech support and like others was faced with a slippery resistance to the idea that this was anything to do with 10.7.4.
Eventually it was suggested I reinstalled Mac OS (switch off, switch on with cmd and R keys held down. Then follow the process. I wasn't hopeful but was compliant. Imagine my joy when, on coming back to me my iMac asked if I wanted to update to 10.7.4. Of course not!
So reinstalling Mac OS takes you back to 10.7.3. So far so good. Will keep you posted.
Still hoping fpr a proper fix from Apple but they don't seem to be taking seriously
in contrast just updated Omin Group's Omniplan (BTW this is great software for the Mac, check out their offering if you haven't). The update notes:
"It seems as if our fix to the Task: Schedule Inspector in 2.1.1 actually caused more widespread crashes. We've rewritten this code in a more robust fashion and have not seen this problem reappear"
Owning and fixing the problem - Apple guys please take note!
    good luck

  • Wifi connection iPad2

When is the "fix" available to resolve the intermittent wifi connection issue? I thought it was promised for the Autumn and it certainly is not resolved on my iPad2.

I had the same problem last night when I switched to WPA from WEP security.  After much hunting around on the internet, I found and tried a solution that immediately worked.
In my router settings, I had to uncheck the option relating to "Group Key."  After that, all devices connected and worked properly!

  • Any wifi connection problems with new Macbook Pro 13" models?

I currently use a 15" Macbook Pro (about 3.5 years old) that has intermittent WiFi connection issues (intermittently loses signal). This seems to have been a very common problem with this laptop model. My kids, who use Macbooks, have no connection problems. In any case, I'd love to buy one of the new model 13-inch Macbook Pro's but hesitate because of my many issues with WiFi connectivity on my older Macbook Pro. Just wondering if anyone is experiencing connectivity problems with the new model?

I've never had Wifi connection problems with a Macbook and now with the 13" MacBook Pro I was flabergasted when I took my MacBook down the street to a coffee house with free WiFi. I went to connect to their WiFi and found my own WiFi connection listed. I thought this odd even though I was on the same block as my apartment, my apartment is six stories up. I connected to the Coffee Shop WiFi but it was really slow so I wondered if I could connect to my own home connection. I switched it over and lo-and behold I did connect! It was a good 300 feet away! I NEVER saw this with previously owned MacBooks including the black MacBook and the MacBook offered just before they moved the MacBook up to the Pro series.
So I'd say they have improved the WiFi nicely.
