Intermittent Wifi DNS Problem

Blackberry Curve 8900, Software v 5.0.0.411 (Platform 5.2.0.31)
I seem to have a really annoying intermittent problem with my phone.  Sometimes, it works on my home network perfectly, and other times the Wifi symbol goes grey and I can't browse the internet on it using Hotspot Browser.  All other devices on the network will all be working fine whilst this is going on.
The home screen shows that I am connected to wifi - the SSID is shown - but wifi diagnostics shows that it is not connecting to either the Blackberry infrastructure, or the Enterprise.
The phone is getting the correct DNS server addresses from the router, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle any DNS requests.  I can ping and telnet rcp.eu.blackberry.com perfectly from my laptop, but the phone won't resolve an address for it.
Usually (but not always) a battery pull will sort it out for a while, and sometimes a router reboot will do it.  Switching the wifi off and on again never works.
Having said it seems like a DNS issue, I can't actually ping the router's IP address from the phone so perhaps it's not a DNS issue at all and it's not actually connected to the my router, despite appearing to be so.
I've checked the router logs and there are no obvious error messages in there which would explain this.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to things I can try?  I don't think it's reasonable to have to reboot either my phone or the router 4 or 5 times a day and it gets extremely irritating as I have to keep my phone near me for work, and me happens to be near my computer speakers so when it falls off the wifi, I'm constantly getting that irritating speaker interference!
Many thanks,
Emily.

I have a feeling this might be related - if I switch Data Services off in Mobile Network, I get exactly the same symptoms.  If I look at the DNS lookup tool from within 'Mobile Network' rather than the WiFi screen, it tells me that it doesn't have any DNS server addresses.
It looks as though my issues might be to do with losing data coverage (I tend to sit in an area which doesn't have great signal).  Surely the Curve 8900 should be able to maintain internet connectivity via Wifi even if there is no mobile data coverage?  I've seen that this should be possible as a solution when using the phone abroad - switch data off to avoid the higher charges, but still be able to use hotel wifi, etc.  Other users have reported being able to do this, but from what I can tell, my phone isn't able to work like this at the moment.
Any suggestions?  Or can anyone else at least confirm that they are able to use Wifi to get on the internet even with mobile Data Services switched off?
Thanks,
Emily.
[Edit] P.S. This would also explain why I couldn't get internet on my phone at all this morning despite rebooting both it and the router, as Vodafone were reporting voice, sms and internet network outages in the UK today

  • WiFi connection problem testing

I am also one of many having the intermittent WiFi connection problem at home.
From a technical testing mode. Get the free the "FreePing" application by Marcel Lanz in the app store.
What you will find is when you are having the internet connection problem, you can not ping your Router. However, you can ping any wired Mac or desktop computer on your router/switch network.
This tells you, you are on the network, getting an IP address from the router DHCP server.
The problem is not related to the Wi-Fi connection or connecting to the network (OSI Layer 2 model).
It appears to be a problem at the OSI Network Layer 3. The router is having a problem in the routing table. The hard part is the Layer 3 problem can be either in the Touch or the router in this configuration. Meaning, the combination of both Touch and router is causing the problem. Thus, the intermittent operation.
Yes, this is probably more technical than anyone here cares to know.

    Hi,
You should be debugging the driver / contact the vendor. Seems like netrtwlanu is realtek based chipset.
The abort points to this driver (at least the PC).

You need a larger internal drive and you definitely need to uninstall any Avast product, using the instructions at the developer's website. A 120GB SSD with only 9.6GB free just isn't going to cut it - you need at least 9GB in free space just to run Mavericks and many people suggest that 10-15% of your disk (particularly on a SSD) should be free space.

  • Windows 7 VM has DNS Problem When Using Wireless

    Hello All,
I've been fighting this virtual machine networking problem for over a week now. If anyone has a well-informed suggestion (not a guess) I would appreciate hearing about it.
Here's the problem in a nutshell and then I'll give more details: I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) as my primary (i.e., host) OS. I'm running Windows 7 Home Professional (32 bit) as the guest OS in "Windows Virtual PC" (note that this is *not* the same as "Virtual PC 2007"). If I configure the VM to use my host's wired Ethernet connection, the guest OS can always see the machines on my local network and can always reach the Internet just fine. On the other hand, if I configure the VM to use only my host's wireless connection then the guest OS can still see machines on my local network but CANNOT reach the Internet, except very intermittently (e.g., for maybe 1-2 minutes every hour or so).
I've tried to anticipate the questions you might ask so here is some additional information:
The computer is a Lenovo W500 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. The wireless network adapter is an "Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN".
My Internet connection is via AT&T DSL using a wire2 wireless modem/router.
I have all the updates from Microsoft and Lenovo for this machine. It is 100% up to date with the latest patches and drivers.
I'm running the 64-bit version (or at least I used the 64 bit installer) of "Windows Virtual PC" which I downloaded  from this link.
I am *not* running and I did not download "XP Mode".
When the guest OS loses it's connection to the Internet the following message appears in the Windows Event Log:
"Name resolution for the name address.yahoo.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded."
I am able to ping an external machines outside my network but only if I use the IP address. If I specify the host name it cannot be resolved.
ARE YOU GETTING THE IMPRRESSION THIS IS A DNS PROBLEM??? It looks like I do not have access to a DNS when using the host's wireless connection.
On the host OS, the "Virtual PC Network Filter Driver" *IS* installed and selected under my "Wireless Network Connection Properties" settings.
Below are the results of running ipconfig on the guest OS and then the host OS. Note that I am able to ping 192.168.1.254 from the host OS but not from the guest OS. I think this is the crux of the problem.
Here's what I get from an ipconfig /all executed on the guest OS:

    Hello,
I am not very familiar wth Microsoft Security Essentials, but believe that it just makes use of the existing Windows Firewall which is present with the operating system.
To me it is odd that the guest OS reports 192.168.1.254 as the IP address for its gateway and DHCP server yet it cannot access them when pinged.  Let's try pinging from host to guest (and vice-versa)  and see what happens:
From the host OS at 192.168.1.78, try pinging the guest OS at 192.168.1.75.
Then, from the guest OS at 192.168.1.75, trying ping the host OS at 192.168.1.78.
Is each operating system able to ping each other?

  • IOS 8.3 wifi DNS broken

    I have an iPhone 5S / iPhone 6 Plus / iPad Mini x 2 / IPad (and some Macbook / iMac..)
    I recently upgraded the 5S / 6+ to IOS 8.3.
The 5S and 6+ now no longer work on WIFI. They used to work on wifi with IOS 8.2.
I have an TP-Link Archer C7 Wifi Router at home; I upgraded the firmware on this; I have reset the network settings on the phones; I have reset everything on phones; I have restored the phones via iTunes; I have manually entered the Wifi SID rather than selecting the network;  I tried entering a static IP address; I tried using the google DNS 8.8.8.8; even tried to revert to IOS 8.2 on the iPhone 5S but it failed and forced me back onto IOS 8.3 - none of these suggestions work - the WIFI no longer works on IOS 8.3.
The WIFI used to work before IOS 8.3. The wifi doesn't work after IOS 8.3 upgrade.
The iPad Mini / iPad remain on IOS8.2 and function on the wifi without problems. IOS 8.2 clearly has more stable wifi than IOS 8.3.
Here is the weird thing - Whilst I say that IOS 8.3 wifi doesn't work, the devices are connecting to the network and receive an IP address. The devices are visible (IP and MAC Address) on the router. My first thought before I started trying everyone else was that the DNS server had an issue - e.g. I have a connection but I cannot browse websites or use my apps when connected to the wifi. This looks like a DNS issue in IOS 8.3 and the way it is resolving addresses.
I can browse directly to IP addresses.
Any suggestions for resolving this issue, or those with similar symptoms would be most welcome.

Just wanted to provide an update - The iPhone 6+ sprang to life again... weird. However, the 5S is still not working. I have identified that if I set the 6+ up as a  hotspot for the 5S that the internet will work. I also have access to cellular data 3G / 4G.
    Also, whilst I thought I had completed a full restore I have repeated and 'setup as a new phone' to rule out conflict of apps causing the issue;
The setup still cannot resolve internet address, however I can browse via IP address...
This is apparently a software fault with the DNS in IOS 8.3.
My next step is to rule out incompatibility with the router - I have a BT Homehub 3, 4, and a Time Capsule to test against.... surely this will work with an Apple Time Capsule...

  • I am having a DNS problem with my computer. My laptop connects to the internet and my skype works normally but when i try to surf the web it says "DNS Look up failed".

    MY PROBLEM
I am having a DNS problem with my laptop. It connects normally to th e wifi internet but when i try to surf the net it says "DNS Look up failed"
This problem only occurs when with the internet at my house. whenever i connect elsewhere my computer works normally. My ipod, iphone, tablet and other friends computers work normally when they are connected to my internet. i use dmy neigbours nework a couple of times from my house and it wrks normally.
Also when i turn my laptop on or off i can browse for a few minutes or seconds before it fails again. My skype works like there is no problem
WHAT I HAVE TRIED TO RESOLVE IT
I have tried changing the DNS, i used open DNS and google free DNS and it still didnt make a difference.
I have rebooted router many times, nothing
I have changed my home router, nothing
I backed up my computer, resored everything it to factory setting and put everything back on; still nothing
Run a diagnostics at 'Best buy' and they say nothing is wrong; but i know there is something wrong with the DNS
I have tried different "sudo" type of codes on my comupter from stuff i got online and nothign has proved fruitful yet.
i tried using safari, Google chrome and firefox, all not loading
WHAT DO I DO TO FIX THIS?

You are correct.  Syncing should transfer any purchased media, including videos, from your device to your iTunes library provided your computer is authorized for the Apple ID used to make these purchases.  You mentioned that you have uninstalled iTunes before, but if you didn't follow this guide exactly, uninstalling iTunes and all of its components in the order specified, it may not have been successful so you should try again:  Windows XP or Windows Vista/7.

  • Why do I have Intermittent Wifi Connection Loss during music streaming ?

    Hello,
I have an ipad3 and an iPhone 4S and I am getting with both devices interruption of the sound when I send music to the Apple TV. It generally happens after a few minutes. The signal for the wifi is still good and I have still access to the Internet  I have tried all the recommendations of the article "iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections" but this did not help. I have used several applications for sending music to the Apple TV (music application from Apple and DSAudio from Synology) but I'm getting the same issue. I have also the same issue with the media center application from Bouygues Telecom connecting directly to my internet router. My router is a bbox sensation. I had also the same kind of issue with my old router when sensing photo albums to the internet: I had the error message "your system is running low on ressources". How can I solve these intermittent wifi connection losses ?

    Try #5.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Wrv210 intermittent wifi on mac's

i recently purchased a wrv210 router. it's got the latest (2.0.0.11) firmware. my windows based computers seem to work off the wifi without problem but my two mac's (an imac and a macbook pro) have intermittent wifi connection. they connect for some time then drop the connection and back again. wired connections are solid.
i have tried several wifi settings, various channels, i have even downgraded to 1.??? (linksys) firmware.
most routers i have installed before work almost out of the box. are we dealing with a)hardware issue b) settings issue c) mac issue?
    thanks for anyone's response

I am having this same problem.
However it doesn't matter what operating system. The wireless just drops after a wihile and nothing can connect to it.
Only a reboot will get it working again. It can last for a few days or a few hours. Doesn't seem to be any pattern.

  • IPhone 5s: Intermittent wifi; wifi signal is full but phone not connected to internet

Hi all, I have a strange wifi connectivity problem.
    At home:
iPhone 5s connects normally to wifi, but after several minutes of usage (particularly browsing the internet), wifi signal remains full but safari states that phone is not connected to internet. Other apps like whatsapp also don't work. When I disable wifi then enable it again on my phone, I can connect to the internet temporarily again, but after a few seconds it disappears again. If I leave it for a while, it automatically connects again, but intermittently and unpredictably. All in all, unreliably.
At home, MacBook Air works fine with no connectivity issues.
At other wifi locations, the same iphone 5s has no problems at all with wifi connectivity.
    Also, I have already
    - reset phone
    - reset network settings on phone
    - reset router
    - unplugged and replugged modem and router to wall switch
    - previous iPhone 4 on iOS 7 had no issues with home wifi
Thus, I am uncertain if this is a phone or wifi issue. My best guess would be that it is a compatibility issue between the iPhone 5s and my home wifi?
Any suggestions as to where I could start solving this problem would be very appreciated! Thank you:)

If you are having WiFi problems it is necessary to isolate whether the problem is with your network or your iPhone. Note: Do NOT consider your network to be blameless if some other devices can connect to it.
First, test your iPhone on some other WiFi networks: a friends, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, etc.
If it works well there then the problem is probably with your network. Try restarting your WiFi router by removing power for 30 seconds. If that does not help check for a firmware update for your router. If none exists which corrects the problem consider replacing the router.
If your iPhone does not function well on other networks it possibly has a hardware problem. You could try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings to see if that corrects the problem. If not, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple store for evaluation. They can provide a replacement if your iPhone is bad.
If you need more help please give the make, model, and version of your WiFi router and how you have it configured.

  • DNS Problems with WRT54G

2 Nights ago we had storms in the area; next morning wife calls me at work and says that internet connection does not work. Get home and take a look at it. I can connect to router wired or wirelessly, was able to look at the configurations, etc. but when I try to access internet pages I get an error indicating DNS problems.
I have cycled power on cable modem (also Linksys but don't remember model number at the moment) and router. Still had the same problem wired and wirelessly.
I reset the router to factory defaults, connected to it both wired and wirelessly and still had the DNS rpoblems.
I reconfigured the router with my original security settings, connected to it wired and wirelessly and still had the DNS problems.
I connected directly to the cable modem and had no problems accessing internet at all.
Is there any way that I can force the router into updating DNS information? Or possibly reset DNS information?
I have run out of things that I know to try. I hope someone can help.

Usually a DNS problem is caused because the router is not connecting to the Internet properly.
Since you have a cable modem, you can usually leave the WRT54G set to its factory default settings, except that you might need to "Clone the MAC address" of the computer that works when connected to your modem.
    Hope this helps.
If you need more help, please do the following:
    1) state your ISP
    2) state the make and exact model number of your modem  (not the WRT54G).
    3)  Connect your computer, by ethernet cable, directly to your modem  (not the WRT54G).  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connection, then do the following test:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.  Post all of the results, except if your "IP address" does not start with 192, then post only the first 3 digits of it, along with the rest of the info.  To copy the info to your post, highlight (select) the info, then use the copy (Ctrl-c) and paste (Ctrl-v) keys.

  • Any wifi connection problems with new Macbook Pro 13" models?

I currently use a 15" Macbook Pro (about 3.5 years old) that has intermittent WiFi connection issues (intermittently loses signal). This seems to have been a very common problem with this laptop model. My kids, who use Macbooks, have no connection problems. In any case, I'd love to buy one of the new model 13-inch Macbook Pro's but hesitate because of my many issues with WiFi connectivity on my older Macbook Pro. Just wondering if anyone is experiencing connectivity problems with the new model?

I've never had Wifi connection problems with a Macbook and now with the 13" MacBook Pro I was flabergasted when I took my MacBook down the street to a coffee house with free WiFi. I went to connect to their WiFi and found my own WiFi connection listed. I thought this odd even though I was on the same block as my apartment, my apartment is six stories up. I connected to the Coffee Shop WiFi but it was really slow so I wondered if I could connect to my own home connection. I switched it over and lo-and behold I did connect! It was a good 300 feet away! I NEVER saw this with previously owned MacBooks including the black MacBook and the MacBook offered just before they moved the MacBook up to the Pro series.
So I'd say they have improved the WiFi nicely.

  • DNS Problems (Oxted)

    Hello,

Email client doesn't work. Skype OK.
    Tablet android (using wifi) OK.

    Ping of 8.8.8.8 (Google) ok.
    Using DNS from Google ok.
Nothing on BT site to indicate problems.
Infinity installation in local exchange, connected????

A factory reset will simply reset the admin and wifi password to its default values, and reset any port forwarding that you may have set up.
Android devices, by default, use DHCP, so will get the settings from the home hub. Some devices, like the Kindle, do things differently.
It quite possible for the internal routing within the HH, to get corrupted. It usually happens when the DHCP table gets full, as the HH does not appear to release unused addresses properly. This shows as missing DNS server settings on the network properties of a PC, even though the default gateway is present.
A factory reset is often suggested by the helpdesk.

  • N95 8BG "WiFi Connection problems" and "Web: no ga...

Like many users, I could not get my new Nokia (N95 8GB) to work with my WiFi. After many attempts, using the various ideas posted, I came up with a solution that works reliably for me.
First lets deal with "WiFi Connection problems"
    Menu/Tools/Settings/Connection/Wireless LAN
    'Show WLAN availability' = 'Yes'
'Scan for networks' = 'Every 5 minutes'
Some users have suggested choosing 'Advanced Settings' from the 'Options' menu, changing 'Automatic configuration' to 'Disabled' and the either setting 'RTS threshold' to '2346', or setting 'Power saving' to 'Disabled'. I tried both of these but they did not make any difference in my case. However they may make a difference for you, hence their inclusion here.
    Menu/Tools/Settings/Connection/Access Points
Choose 'New access point' from the 'Options' menu
    'Data bearer' = 'Wireless LAN'
'WLAN network name' = If your network is set to broadcast its SSID, use 'Search for networks' then select your network from the list, otherwise use 'Enter manually' and type in the SSID.
'Connection name' = anything you like, but I use the SSID
'Network status' = not sure about this maybe someone can confirm, but I think if the SSID is broadcast then it is 'public', otherwise it is 'private'.
'WLAN network mode' = match this to your access point configuration. Mine is set to 'Infrastructure', so I do not cover the ad-hoc scenario here.
'WLAN security mode' = again I am using WEP so have not covered other scenarios.
'WLAN security settings' = these should match you access point configuration.
'Homepage' = whatever you like. I use 'http://www.google.co.uk', just so that when I start browsing I get something reliable, useful, and dependable. If Google fails to appear it usually means there is something wrong with your config.
Now lets handle the dreaded "Web: no gateway reply"
    Menu/Tools/Settings/Connection/Access Points
Scroll down to highlight the new access point and choose 'Edit' from the 'Options' menu. Now choose 'Advanced settings' from the 'Options' menu.
Assuming you network used IPv4, which most do in my experience, select 'IPv4 settings'. I don't know about IPv6, and don't use a proxy so these are not covered.
The values you enter in 'IPv4 settings', depend upon your network/router settings, and whether you have a DHCP server or not.
Assume your a router IP Address, on the LAN side, is 192.168.0.1, and that it has a DHCP server set to serve addresses in the range 192.168.0.64 to 192.168.0.192, using subnet 255,255,255,0. Since the mobile does not seem able to get an IP Address from the DHCP server we give it a static address 192.168.0.55. Notice this is outside the range sereved by te DHCP server to avoid conflicts.
    We end up with:
    'Phone IP address = '192.168.0.55'
    'Subnet mask' = '255,255,255,0'
    'Default gateway' = '192.168.0.1'
    'DNS address' = 'user defined'
    'Primary DNS address' = '192.168.0.1'
    'Secondary DNS address' = '0.0.0.0'
I used something similar and was at last able to browse the web via wifi.
I hope all of the above helps someone out there.

I have just experienced this problem having been using the WiFi network for months without problems. I tries all the suggestions on these forums including the power settings, turning off WEP, and the fixed IP suggestion and none worked. I even reinstalled the firmware and reconfigured everything. It turned out to be the router. I had rebooted it several times to no effect but the DHCP always gave the N95 the same IP address lease. So I changed the range of IP addresses the DHCP could lease and restarted the N95. It got a new IP and was back working again.
If at first you don't succeed, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it.

  • How can I fix an intermittent wifi connection with my MacBook laptop

I have experienced intermittent problems with the wifi connection on my MacBook (2006, 10.6.5 OSX) computer and noticed that other users have commented about this same issue.  Not sure if the problem revolves around the updates from Apple or my wifi card but I only seem to loose my wifi connection with the MacBook.  I have other Apple products, Iphones, Ipads and IMac and they all retain the wifi connection.  Additionally, when I connect the internet cable directly to the MacBook, there is no loss of signal and I have no problem connecting to the Internet.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

After several unsuccessful attempts to resolve my intermittent wifi connection with a 2006 MacBook (I had service techs from Apple store, PeachMac and Computer Advantage check the intermittent wifi problem in store and they could not recreate this issue), I broke down and bought a new wifi card and installed it myself.  The intermittent problem was resolved and my wifi connection works fine everywhere in my home.  Ifixit's website has a great video that explains in detail how to remove and install a new wifi card and you will need the right tools and patience.  Thanks to everyone that posted comments about this issue because the comments proved helpful in solving my problem.

  • I need help with an email WiFi sending problem on my iPad 2

I’m having an email WiFi sending problem on my iPad 2     Model:  MC774C/A;  IOS VERSION: 6.1.3 (10B329).
While I use 4 email accounts on the iPad -- Hotmail, Gmail, iCloud and ns.sympatico.ca ( a division of BellAliant) – the sending difficulty only relates to the ns.sympatico.ca.  The settings for this account are:         pop.bellaliant.net            and      smtp.bellaliant.net
I first noticed the problem about 3 weeks ago while travelling across the country (Canada).  (I do recall about that time there was an update of my IOS and I also for my wife purchased from the Bell store an iPhone which shares my Apple account.)  Prior to that everything worked well for a couple of years.
I noticed earlier this month that the iPad received mail fine but would not send at night using the motels’ WiFi.  During the day, using my 3G account, all worked fine.  I phoned Bell but was told that my experience was normal so I thought no more about it until I returned home and found the same problem at the house.  I called Bell again and worked for 2 hours with 3 Bell technicians who succeeded in getting the iPad to neither send nor receive and gave up advising me to take the iPad into a Bell store to have it looked at.  I did that and the young technician got the iPad sending and receiving by changing the        smtp.bellaliant.net      to         mail.1xbell.ca
However, when I returned home again, I realized that it was working on my 3G and still doesn’t send on my WiFi
I’m looking for any suggestions that might solve this annoying problem?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
