Intermittently shuts down, then slowly gets worse - Satellite P30-133
Hi
Since I purchased this laptop in May 2005 it always had a sudden shut down problem and I am always on Mains!
I did set it as High Power and keep the CPU at 3/4 as well - this way the Fans are working better and the CPU does not overheat.
That was solved.
Then It started to do it again (very rarely) for no apparent reason.
I keep 'all' my computers well updated (drivers included) and lately when I started to do a HDD 'cloning' back up (using
Acronis) it starts the back-up and after a few minutes it shuts down. NOTE: I have been doing this since nearly 2005 wiht no
problems and I have installed the latest update (Acronis), to try and solve the problem.
THe problem is the laptop, as I use that program with other PCs with no problems at all.
Sometimes worked/sometimes not.
Lately (the last few weeks) it started to do it more often and I thought the ext. HDD was gone (I do not believe it!) and I
replaced the ext. HDD with another one I had (new).
It did work fine. Then the next time it did exactly the same (strangely, the other HDD seems intermittently recognised by
Windows (I connected it directly using a IDE/USB lead).
This is not the end.
In the last few days I had this lapto shutting down at its pleasure.
This morning, I switched on and after a few minutes I found it off! - Please note, I do have a new battery too.
Now it starts and as soon as it finished to load windows it shuts down.
I disconnected any external device and still the same - there are no drivers problem.
The other day, when it shut down and I re-booted, windows told me that there was a problem with the Audio driver which I
have installed using the link furnished.
Apart from that, I am completely in the S***
Any help, any idea.
Power supply and battery are new and working fine!
Instead of spending money (I did not want to) on the insurance which is a shambles and never used it (!), I could have purchased a MAC.
You can be very good wiht computers these days, but they are 'mostly' untrustable and all your effort to keep them fine - do
all your backups etc. are of no use and I am a tidy person by nature ! What more can I do? Use my old 386 or 486 - both still
working fine after 20 years?
I do not have a back up and I use it for business too.

Hi
There are F18 and F5 marked screw and you must get them all off.
Some of them are inside the HDD compartment.
I think I have got them all and I am now opening the part near the Screen hinges.
I already opened a Toshiba Pro sometime ago for one of my customers and repaired the DC socket - did it the same day for a business and saved his life! He is still thanking me.
There must be 1 or 2 screw left as I remember the keyboard comes 'swiveling' up towards you at the same time the top part near the screen hinges lifts up.
I have nearly done it!
After you get all the screw out, the silver surrounding comes up a bit, by inserting a tiny blade in the surounding gap.
Last time I did lift the keyboard easily, but not this time.
I cannot lift it !
Done it!
As I remembered the other one.
Just lif tthe silver part near the screen hinges - 'carefully! - and then the keyb has a couple of screws.
Obvious connectors to disconnect, get rid of the screen, etc.
Now I have the whole bottom part wih the mobo and I have taken out a few screws.
I cannot lif the mobo yet!
Once lifted, just a bit of cleaning - when?
Mind I have a antistatic bench and I am earthed!

MacBook Intermittent Shut Down
Redux 2 (Updated Oct 13, 2006)
Guy Kuo
Do a google search for "macbook random shutdown" and you will find many people with similar problems reporting on various forums. Most frequently, the MacBook operates normally for several weeks or months, but mysteriously begins intermittently shutting off suddenly. The shutdowns are not accompanied by kernel panics, but instead the machine simply goes black and the machine is off. Initially, the cause of this problem was not known and early repairs of the main logic board and heat sink did not incorporate the changes made after the cause of the problem was discovered. Numerous attempts at user, ad hoc, solutions have been posted, but the only definitive and permanent solution requires repair by Apple.
The problem as difficult to characterize because its symptoms mimic more common causes of system failure (bad RAM, improperly seated RAM, improperly seated hard drive, bad software install, bad battery, bad AC adapter, corrupted PRAM, corrupted NVRAM) which ALL must be ruled out before making the sudden shutdown diagnosis. The problem's intermittent nature means it may not be possible to reproduce on demand.
At present, this problem is being addressed by Apple and affects at least serial number range 4H617-4H635. MacBooks produced after that date should have an updated heat sink assembly which does not have that problem. The problem seems to have two root causes.
1. Two heat sensor wires in contact with the heat sink can melt and once that occurs, intermittent shorting of the wires causes the machine to sense an emergent temperature problem and the system performs an immediate power down.
2. Also, as described in a MacTalk Australia posting ..... 2 small connectors that bake under the enclosed heat on the Macbook (the Mac book Pro has more space and 2 fans) these connects then loose contact with their pins.... Once contact is lost, the machine does an emergency power down
The common thread is that heat in the original heat sink and thermal sensor design eventually may cause the problem to occur. Once contact or insulation problems begin, the machine can begin suddenly shutting down while cold or hot. Until sufficient heat is built up, the MacBook operates without any issues. It is possible for an early MacBook to operate normally for months before heat causes the problem to occur. Indeed it is possible a machine may never exhibit this problem despite having this weakness in its components. None the less, the early MacBooks have a heat sink and thermal sensor wiring harness that is inherently prone to deterioration. Because the risk of deterioration increases over time, it is reasonable to expect more early MacBooks to develop intermittent shutdown problems as time passes.
There are some early reports that even a heat sink assembly replacement repair does not always solve the issue. In such cases, a logic board replacement may also be necessary, but at this point, heat sink assembly replacement should solve the identified problem unless the MLB was also somehow damaged.
The current count of affected MacBooks has not been disclosed, but well over 1,000 machines have been reported on-line independent of Apple. The actual number of early MacBooks which will eventually be affected may be significantly larger even if one discounts the tendency of the web to amplify negative news.
Because heat is the root cause of the problem, two camps have appeared regarding how to deal with this issue. This author believes that the MacBooks should be allowed to warm to full operating temperature by running some high CPU usage tasks (with normal circulation around the case) for several hours and then seeing over the next few days if the problem occurs. The rationale is reveal any tendency for the problem while the MacBook is within warranty and before any critical usage. The other camp believes that the MacBook should only be used lightly and never allowed to get warm enough to induces the problem. The reader is left to choose their own course.
Only a fraction of shutdowns are due to this particular fault. A large number of other reasons must be ruled out before a MacBook owner should become convinced their machine is one which suffers this problem. Bad RAM, poorly seated RAM, improperly installed hard drive, corrupted OS, corrupted plists, bad batteries, bad chargers, corrupted PMU, and corrupted NVRAM all need to be ruled out first. During your call to Apple care you may be asked to perform checks to rule out the above list. Once a diagnosis of intermittent shut down is made, repair can take days to weeks depending on availability of parts and whether additional components beyond the heat sink assembly needs to be repaired. Once repaired, the MacBook is less likely to redevelop the problem, but as of this date, long term usage of several months has not had time to happen.
It is the hope of this writer that Apple will continue to assist its customers with this hardware "defect." So many first time Apple owners could be lost forever if this is not addressed openly and aggressively. Are you sure RSD is the problem? Then, first, be sure you have downloaded all the updates. The smc update (late October) stopped RSD for many people. If you're updated, then you may need a new heatsink. That's what stopped it for me. I had it replaced at an authorized repair center while I waited - only took a couple of hours. You are still under warranty, so repair will be free if RSD is indeed the problem. You can look on these apple pages for the nearest Apple Store or authorized repair center.
In the meantime, I found it very helpful to hold down the on button for 5 seconds when I restarted the macbook. That kept the processor speed down to 1.0 gH, and for some reason, for me and for some other users, RSD never happened while in that mode.

Hi to all, I use Windows 7, 64Bit and Lightroom 5.7, Camera Raw 8.7, when I develop or export files (mostly Raw Fils from Nikon D810) after 10 to 20 pictures my computer shuts down or I get a bluescreen. Please tell me why.
Blue screen/Computer shuts down is almost always a hardware malfunction or a driver problem.
Make sure your video driver is up to date.
If it is, then the next suspect, in my mind, is overheating, make sure all of the fans in your CPU case are working properly. -

Hi.
Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller -
I MAC SHUTS DOWN THEN QUESTION MARK APPEARS
NEW TO APPLE MY IMAC SHUTS DOWN THEN A QUESTION MARK APPEARS THEN IT RESTARTS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES ANY IDEAS IT DOES SEND A REPORT TO APPLE THANKS
Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
My iPhone 4s has been going black and shutting down then restarting itself, why?
Why does my iphone 4s keep going to a black screen, shutting down then restarting on its own??? Just started happening a day ago. Will I need to get a new phone or can this be fixed?
The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...
Restart / Reset

Backing up, Updating and Restoring
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

Audio is way off in converted videos on ipod...slowly gets worse
Any help on fixes....Progressively gets out of synch with the video as movie plays. Easiest fixes appreciated. Thanks, JY
Fair enough....Videora was my program. No problems getting videos changed over from mpeg to proper format. Got them into itunes and onto my ipod 30gb video. Audio starts off fine, then slowly gets behind more and more during movie.
I read a little about how this can happen. Video is running at a different speed than audio from the get-go. The more time the movie is, the longer the difference gets.
I'm lost on some of the settings people say to use. Need a fix, hopefully with videora, since I've converted several movies already through that. Any help would be great, and hopefully you can explain it with some detail if you do have some info.
Thanks, JY -

On shut down I always get the message Program Not Responding. This happened before I installed Firefox. It does not pose a problem, that I know of, but it does concern me because I always have to End Program manually when I get this message.

When switching on my Mac Pro on bootup it keep shutting down then eventually it works fine
When switching on my Mac Pro on bootup it keep shutting down then eventually it works fine
I also have the exact same problem with my early 2008 Mac Pro. Last spring, the video card that came with the unit burned out. I brought it in to the Apple Store in my area, but they were unable to really help me out. I ended up replacing the card, but about two or three weeks ago I started having the same exact issue that you do - the Mac would suddenly die occasionally, and then would take quite a few tries to come back up. It seems that resetting the PRAM helps temporarily with me. It has been up since about 3 PM so far, and it is behaving.
My main issue is that replacement parts are expensive for this machine. If I were to replace the power supply and the logic board, Apple would charge me about a thousand bucks! That's simply too much money to drop on a 4 year old computer.
My solution is that I will run it for a while longer, and replace it with the Mac Mini with the ATI GPU. The Mini is about 85% as powerful according to Geekbench, and if it dies I will not be out more than a few hundred bucks.
I will be migrating all my OpenCL code to FreeBSD as well, because replacing a power supply or motherboard in a generic DIY PC is only a hundred or two dollars at the most. -
MY ipad will not power down anymore. Each time I try to power down it shuts down then powers up again.
See if this fixes it. Reboot and let the iPad start up, then try to power down.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up. -
Satellite P100 shuts down then reboots
G'day, my laptop boots up fine and then after some time, a couple of minutes to a couple of hours, it will instantly die with no warning, then reboot as though it was a fresh start. There are no errors captured.
I've had the system checked, wiped the hdd, changed the hdd and mem, I'm runnimg XP pro.
it's on now in bios ok, but when in windows it will shut and restart. I don't think that temp is an issue because of the restarts at 4mins. 3yrs running fine, then this.
Any ideas???
NeilHi njgo2,
If you have already reinstalled Windows, it shouldnt be a software or driver issue. Theoretically it could be shut down due a higher internal temperature. Your notebook is 3 years old so have you already cleaned it? If not its time for that because a notebook should be cleaned every 3-4 months. If you use compressed air spray, you will wonder how much dust comes out. ;)
So before you change anything, clean it firstly. It takes only few minutes and therefore its not necessary to disassemble it. -
MacBook Pro Mid-2010 Intermittent Shut-Down and Fuzzy Screen
Hi,
My MacBook Pro Mid-2010 has been having some problems recently. Hope someone will be able to help me with this. Below are the symptoms that has been showing.
Symptoms:
1. Intermittent Shutdown
2. Screen going fuzzy (when I give it a slight tap it will be fine but everything just hangs)
3. 3 beep sound
4. Can't start up (The sleep light will just stay on but nothing appears. I have to force shutdown and try starting it again.)
I have recently done a clean install of Yosemite but the problem is still occuring.
I also took it down to Singapore Apple Service Centre to try to get the problem fixed. But the initial tests shows that all the components in the Mac is working fine. I will need to pay for a full test as my Mac is out of warranty hence I did not send it in.
Below is a copy of the recent log after it shut down by itself.
Appreciate if someone can help me with this!
Thank you!
Regards,
Kai Yuan

Thunderbolt Bus:I just had the same problem! Just installed Mavericks a couple of days ago but everything was running perfectly till just a couple of minutes ago watching netflix and working on Dreamweaver my macbook just shutdown. I had to Turn it back on and in the first try it shutdown immediatelly again, then i tried for second time and as soon as i got back into my account a bunch of programs start sending erros as my clock was set to a different date. My battery seems to be fine, i even check the report in the system preferences, it had 50% of battery and was plugged in so i am guessing that is not the problem.
Here the report:
Charge Information:
Charge Remaining (mAh): 3356
Fully Charged: No
Charging: Yes
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 6626
Health Information:
Cycle Count: 367
Condition: Normal
I had to have my motherboard replaced last year as my macbook its a 15 inch Mid 2010 so i took it to Mac Store.. they didnt charge me for anything as it is a problem that Apple acknowledge the problem was in their side. I am just hoping i dont have to deal with this again.
